Welcome to your September edition of your Tuffley-Link magazine.

Can you believe that the Summer holidays are now coming to an end!

It’s the start of a new academic year, and this can mean the beginning of a new era for

many parents and children. Whether its their first days at primary or secondary school, or

leaving the nest to start College or University, September can be the start of new begin-

nings. So with empty nest syndrome on the horizon perhaps its time to find new ventures.

There are Art Classes starting in September at the Abbeydale Sports and Community Centre

- see page 11 for more information.

Tuffley Library are holding an I.T club on Thursdays between 11am and 1pm, why not pop

along with and IT issues you may have, there are more details on page 17.

Whilst the older children may have gone back to school, there is a Nipper, Babies and Tod-

dlers Group held every Wednesday morning at the St

Barnabas church hall - read more about this on page17.

If you have a local group or community event you would

like us to advertise, please just get in contact.

Remember if you do contact one of the businesses that

are advertising with us - please let them know that you

saw them in ‘The Tuffley-Link’. This is really

important. It will help to ensure that they continue to

advertise and gives us the best chance of securing the

future of the directory for the residents of Tuffley.

If you own or work in a business of which Tuffley is part

of your target market then you should be advertising

with us! Our rates are incredibly good value and we

have some stunning packages for long term advertisers.

Congratulations to Mrs B Heathcote on winning last

months Sudoku competition, tickets to Cineworld are on

their way to you. This months competition is on page 15

Have a great month

Sarah.

Lil’ Mikey’s big brother, Oscar, is doing a Fun Run for his school. It is three miles in

total and Oscar, having just completed the first two miles, is two-thirds of the way

there. As he runs past his mum and dad and Lil’ Mikey, who are all cheering him on,

he looks a little distressed. He is not finding it much fun any more; he has seen the

time and worked out that he is only averaging four miles an hour. He wanted to

average six miles an hour to beat his Personal Best – so he tells himself he must go a

bit faster no matter how worn out he is.

How fast will Oscar have to run the final mile in order to get his average speed for

the whole Fun Run up to six miles per hour?

Lil’ Mikey’s MindbenderLil’ Mikey’s MindbenderLil’ Mikey’s MindbenderLil’ Mikey’s Mindbender The Not-So-Fun Run

As the Fun Run is three miles long, if his overall speed was six miles per hour he would do the whole

run in thirty minutes. However, it has taken him thirty minutes to run the first two miles at four miles an

hour, so he would have to run the final mile in 0 minutes… so no matter how fast he runs, he would not

increase his average speed to six miles per hour, not even with an Olympic sprint!

Looking good is feeling great....so let your therapy begin!

It's often hard to find time to relax, unwind and feel good about ourselves - but we

all deserve to look and feel our best.

Whilst we can't guarantee to change your life, we can make sure you feel great on

the inside - because you'll feel good about yourself on the outside. So whether you

want to relax with a Lava Shell Massage, treat yourself to a Dermalogica Facial,

experience the delights of Jessica hand and Nail Therapy or simply get away for a

bit of peace and quiet - feeling good does really start here

Hi, my name is Sam Baggott. I am a fully qualified beauty

therapist gaining both a CIBTAC (Confederation of Interna-

tional Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology) Diploma and a

BTEC National Diploma at Gloscat College in 1997.

Since then I have worked in a small number of well known

beauty salons and spas in the Gloucester area, gaining

knowledge and experience.

In 2007 I decided to go it alone and set up my own business

working from home. I offer a wide range of treatments, using

excellent products, all carried out in a relaxing, professional environment and to a

high standard.

.

Customer Testimonial: I have been a client of "therapy" for a number of

years and I hope that our relationship continues for

many years to come.

At "therapy" I am made to feel special and greeted

with a warm welcome and encouraged to relax in

the calm environment of the treatment room.

In the expert hands of the consultant I have enjoyed

many pleasurable treatments from massage to facials

and extensions to skin analysis and many more.

Lawrence) befriends the surviving son, she learns the story is far from over.

Gardening Tips for September from Garden Delight..

Flowers, Tubs and Borders Trim back and remove any gone over summer bedding and start the process of replacing with autumn

flowering plants.

Don’t be tempted to buy and plant out pansies too early you may find if the weather remains warm they

will go leggy and attract aphids. Wait until the end of the month until the weather cools a little.

It’s a good month to be buying and planting out bulbs for a riot of colour next spring. Get the bulbs when

they are fresh in the stores but be sure they have not been in stock too long and therefore drying out under

the heat.

Prepared Hyacinths (these are ones which have been pre treated to ensure the flower bud is well up the

bulb) should be planted up in containers and placed in a cool dark place by the end of the month. If you

don’t have holes in the pots you will need a bulb fibre compost containing charcoal and oyster shell

which keeps the compost sweet. These pots can then be brought out in time to flower for Christmas; a

number of other bulbs are suitable for this treatment, check with your local garden centre for advice.

Spray michealmass daises with a fungicide to control mildew before flowering.

Dahlias will be looking good and still producing lots of flowers, if yours suffer from earwigs (lots of

nibbled holes in the leaves) then try placing an up turned flower pot full of straw or shredded paper on a

cane in amongst the plants, check it every morning you will find that the earwigs like to hang out here

during the day, you can then dispose of them as you wish.

Lawns Now is a good time to sow new lawns or lay new turf.

Scarify and aerate existing lawns, scarifying means to rake out and remove the thatch or old dead grass

and if your lawn is the type which holds water during the winter it will benefit from aerating – go over

the lawn with a garden fork making holes and then sweep/rake in a gritty lawn treatment to aid drainage

and help keep down moss.

Feed lawns with an autumn lawn feed, these autumn feeds go to the roots and toughen up the lawn for the

hard frosts of winter, they also help to control moss

Fruit and Vegetables Lift Onions and dry them out by putting them on the garden path for a day or so in the late autumn sun-

shine. Store them somewhere cool dry and airy to use as required.

Plant Garlic now in a sunny free draining spot, garden centres should now have the new cloves for sale.

They should also have stocks of Japanese onions which if planted now will be ready for an early crop

next June, but be quick they usually sell out very fast!

Toward the end of the month lift the last of the beetroot, carrots and potatoes but leave in parsnips and

Swedes until after the first frost this way they will develop more flavour

Sow Aquadulce broad beans, this variety will over winter as it’s hardy and therefore give you an early

crop next year. ‘Claudia’ is an improved variety

Plant of the Month Abelia grandiflora – Easy to grow plant for the back of the border growing to around 6ft but with careful

pruning in April if can be kept at around 4ft in height. The leaves are semi evergreen and have a bronze

tinge to them, masses of pale pink flowers are produced in June and continue to October. Any reasonable

soil in a light position. The variety ‘Francis Mason ‘ is smaller in habit and has brighter gold tinged

leaves.
