Due to the ever-increasing interest in all things food-related, we are seeing a growing demand to know exactly what is on our plates and how it got there. In response, Reading Together 2014

will focus on food themes, featuring – for the first time in the history of Reading Together – two books by two different authors: The American Way of Eating: Undercover at Walmart, Applebee's, Farm Fields, and the Dinner Table by Tracie McMillan and Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer by Novella Carpenter.

All the health experts tout the importance of eating organic, but not everyone can afford the cost to do so. Award winning journalist and Michigan native Tracie McMillan wanted to go beyond the food on her plate and explore the national priorities that put it there. The American Way of Eating chronicles McMillan’s own experiences in California farm fields, the produce aisle of

a Detroit Walmart and the kitchen of New York City’s Applebee’s.

In Farm City, author Novella Carpenter recounts how she converted her ramshackle, weed-choked backyard in inner-city Oakland to an efficient farm complete with veggies, turkeys, ducks and pigs. This 2009 New York Times "Top 10 Book" heralds the joys and tribulations of a self-sustaining lifestyle.

The results of our latest public survey are clear. Parents want access to homework help for their children and themselves. Whether students are preparing for preschool or wrapping up their graduate degree, KPL has plenty of resources to support their studies, available at any of our five locations.

Children entering kindergarten through 5th grade can find a plethora of information via Kids InfoBits. Grades 1-6 can access information on a range of subjects including countries, environment, health, history, science, technology and more via SIRS Discoverer and eLibrary Elementary. Young travelers can explore the world digitally via CultureGrams and World Book Encyclopedia. Have a research paper on Abraham Lincoln? No problem, Biography in Context has everything you need to know about contemporary and historical figures.

Other resources databases for teens and adults include Opposing Viewpoints in Context, an engaging online experience for those seeking contextual information and opinions on today’s

hottest social issues. Gale Virtual Reference Library provides reference books on business, history, science, environment, medicine and more. Biography in Context is also beneficial for older students with research papers to write.

Coming this fall, KPL will offer three sessions of a new program called Think College. Representatives from Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency (K-RESA) and KPL will share information on preparing for college at any age, featuring the resources we have available in the

community. Library staff will demonstrate test prep resources as well. KPL will also offer two sessions of a new program with Read and Write Kalamazoo (RAWK). These speed writing classes will help sharpen youth writing and literacy skills.

All of these excellent resources may be accessed at kpl.gov/homework. Your library card may be required to login. Happy studies!
