Meteorologist Dennis Todey, director of the USDA’s Midwest Climate Hub, says the indications for La Nina conditions are steady and the pattern may last another three months or more. “We have about a 65% chance of it persisting through winter which is fairly good from a climate perspective,” Todey says. “The expectations are, typical La Nina conditions are what are reflected in the outlooks. The Northern Plains has a little better chance of being colder than average and potential for wetter than average conditions.” A La Nina occurs when Pacific Ocean surface temperatures trend below normal for several months. Todey says this La Nina pattern appears to be only moderate in force. “This is not going to be a really strong La Nina so our outlooks don’t reflect a real strength,” Todey says, “but at least when we have a La Nina, we have a little better chance of being able to say what we’re seeing going through the wintertime.” This weather pattern usually brings certain conditions to Nebraska, namely more colder temperatures and more snow than usual. “If you like snow, we have a little better chance of having some snow on the ground but there’s not a ton of confidence be- hind this that it’s going to be exactly like this,” Today says, “but with the La Nina, we have a little better chance of saying that it will be like this.” DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE’S 27TH DIRECTOR Leaders from Nebraska’s top agriculture and commodity organizations issued statements congratulating Governor Pete Ricketts on his selection of Steve Wellman as the Nebraska Department of Agriculture’s 27th Director. “On behalf of the Nebraska Farm Bureau I want to offer our congratulations to Steve Wellman on his appointment as the new Ne- braska Director of Agriculture. Steve is a Farm Bureau member from Otoe County and has served agriculture through his involvement in nu- merous agriculture organizations. We look forward to working with Steve in the coming days and weeks to continue our organization’s part- nership with the leadership and staff of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture in our collective efforts to serve Nebraska’s farm and ranch families,” said Steve Nelson, President of Nebraska Farm Bureau. “Steve's combined experience as a rancher, farmer and groups leader, provides a unique perspective as Department of Agriculture Director. He has been able to speak with public officials and regulators with authority from all these perspectives," said Troy Stowater, President of Nebraska Cattlemen. “Nebraska Corn congratulates Steve Wellman and looks for- ward to working with him in the years ahead. REGISTRATION FOR SPRING CLASSES NOW OPEN Registration is now open for spring classes at Mid-Plains Community Col- lege. On-site, online and distance learning formats are all available, making it easier and more convenient than ever to pursue a postsecond- ary education. There are a variety of classes for both traditional and non -traditional students, which include those pursuing college for the first time, those seeking a new occupation and those simply wanting to brush up their current job skills. MPCC also offers the tremendously popular dual credit option, allowing high school students to take courses for both high school and college credit simultaneously. The classes, taught in the high schools, provide students with a jumpstart on college at a deeply discounted rate. The first round of spring classes will begin in January.

Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost has announced the hiring of

seven assistant coaches on his Husker football staff. A 2017

national coach of the year candidate, Frost was hired as Ne-

braska’s head coach this weekend. The seven new Nebraska

assistant coaches all come to Lincoln after spending the past

two seasons on Frost’s UCF staff. The group has been a part of

orchestrating one of the biggest turnarounds in college football

history. UCF went from a winless season in 2015 before the

staff’s arrival to a 12-0 season, American Athletic Conference

Championship and berth in the Peach Bowl just two seasons

later. The assistant coaches named to Frost’s staff include: Greg

Austin, Offensive Line, Erik Chinander, Defensive Coordinator,

Mike Dawson, Defensive Line, Jovan Dewitt, Outside Lineback-

ers/Special Teams, Travis Fisher, Defensive Backs, Ryan Held,

Running Backs and Mario Verduzco, Quarterbacks. The group of

seven assistant coaches has a history of championship experi-

ence and brings a collective total of 123 years of coaching ex-

perience to the Nebraska staff. Including Frost, the staff has

combined to coach in nine national championship games.
