Class Councillors Congratulations to the following students who have been elected as Semester 1 Class Councillors by their peers. This year will see the continuation of the Student Representative Council (SRC), who will meet regularly to make decisions to help our school be an even better place. The Class Councillors play an important role in this council and we look forward to working with them. They will recite the Councillors pledge and be presented with their badges at the K-6 assembly on Monday 25th February. Parents are welcome to join us for this important occasion.

Homework Review Milton PS is holding a review on the delivery of homework across K-6 and its effectiveness based on observation and current research. On the review panel lead by Mr Thomson, are three P&C reps, a teacher representative from each stage and a member of the executive team. At this stage, Home Reading (sight words for K-2) and the Term Speaking and Listening assessment task are the only homework tasks being sent home. We thank you for your patience whilst the review is taking place. We encourage all parents to read to their children also.

Early School Arrivals The earliest children should be arriving at school is from 8:30am where they are loosely supervised in the top quad area. Supervision duty commences from 8:55am.

Checks required for all Volunteers Each year a new ‘Working with Children’ declaration or the sighting of a current ‘Working with Children’ certificate is required prior to volunteers commencing at school. We appreciate all the help given by parents and friends who assist in the classroom, canteen, sport and Volunteer Reading Tutor programs and would be grateful if all volunteers could complete a ‘Working with Children’ declaration at the office. Please remember to bring your 100 points of identification. Working with Children declarations are available from the school office or online.

Milton PS Swimming Carnival On Tuesday 5

th February, students in years 3-6 participated

in the annual Milton Public School swimming carnival at Milton pool. It was a fabulous day with all students participating with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. The new sports house captains and vice captains all led their houses with great passion – we could hear the war cries coming down the road from school all the way to the pool! We would especially like to thank all the AMAZING AND DEDICATED PARENTS who volunteered to be time keepers; without your invaluable help we could not have held the carnival. Many races were extremely close, with only fractions of a second dividing a first place from a second. And, to see so many students compete and challenge themselves was awe inspiring. Successful competitors went on to compete at the district swimming carnival held today 19

th February at Narooma

Public Pool. Many thanks to all teachers, students, parents, Wade (MPS general assistant) for transporting all of our equipment and the wonderful Milton Pool staff for making such a very successful and wonderful day. Mrs Chapman Good luck today to the MPS District swimming team. Members are: Matthew, Jesse, Annabelle, Ava, Cameron, Eddie, Zara, Montanna, Christian, Jacob, Skye, Charlotte, Harry, Harry, Charleigh, Frankie, Nash, Sam, Grace, Callula, Lachlan, Max, Alana, Aliyah, Rome, Nate, Kaylee, Isabella, Thomas, Nakiah, Zara, Zeke, Sarah and Chloe.

2019 Dance Teams Auditions for the 2019 Dance team will be on in Weeks 3, 4 and 5 of Term 1. Auditions will take place at lunchtime and students will be notified at morning lines what day auditions will run. An information session will be held during Week 2 for interested dancers. There will be 3 items entered into the Shoalhaven Eisteddfod - Infants Troupe (Year 2 only), Junior Troupe (Years 3 and 4) and Senior Troupe (Years 5 and 6) with a maximum of 20 students in each Troupe. Students who are selected will need to commit to all lunchtime rehearsals and be willing to pay a $20 costume hire fee.

Transition Meetings This week, teachers from across the school are attending meetings to ensure that students’ transition into the next grade may be a successful one. Teachers will share information about how this year’s teachers can best suit the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of students. Thank you to Mrs Weekes who so diligently created a timetable so that information sessions between teachers go ahead.

Healthy School Canteen Congratulations to Rebecca Brook, our wonderful canteen supervisor, who has worked extremely hard over the past 12 months to be one of the first school canteens in NSW to be awarded the 'Great Choice - Healthy School Canteen' award. The Healthy Canteen strategy is an initiative designed to encourage good nutrition, help children to make wise food and drink choices, improve their overall wellbeing and reduce childhood obesity. Bec's menu ticks all the healthy choice boxes within the strict food and drink criteria. The strategy involves Bec preparing fresh food, balancing the menu, cooking food from scratch, promoting healthy eating and keeping prices affordable for our families. Congratulations Bec! You are amazing.

Canteen Volunteers A big thank you to the parents and grandparents who have volunteered to work in the canteen already. We still need some more volunteers for later in the term. If you are willing and able to spend a day or two in our canteen, please contact the school or pop down and see Bec Brook, our lovely canteen supervisor. There is a free lunch and drink for anyone who helps in the canteen.

Ethics classes at Milton Public School Could you be an ethics teacher for Milton Public School? We are seeking volunteers so that classes can continue next year. Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a two-day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available to teach at school for 40 minutes each week. In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure. Children discuss topic such as: -imagining how others feel -how do we treat living things? -what is laziness? -how do we disagree in a respectful way? -fairness If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au or contact ethics coordinator Kim Wilson on 0417 254 691.
