Tevet/ Shevat - Adar 5774 January - February 2014 Volume 26, No. 1 & 2 TEMPLE SHIR SHALOM I recently read a great short story about a rabbi and a soap maker.* As they were talking, the soap maker turned to the rabbi and asked, “What good is religion? Religion teaches morals, values and ethics, yet look at this world! It’s filled with pain, evil and wickedness. Rabbi, what good is religion?” Nearby, a group of kids were playing with a ball. The rabbi pointed at them and said, “Just look at that young child. He’s absolutely filthy! And you’re a soap maker, so I ask you, what good is soap? There’s all this soap in the world, and that young boy is still dirty!” The soap maker protested. “How can you say that? You’re a smart man, rabbi – surely you understand that soap is good only if it’s used.” “And so it is with religion,” said the rabbi. “Our faith only makes a difference when we use it.” I love this story because it reminds us of the beauty of our religion. Judaism has something to teach us about every situation. Our faith has the potential to guide us on every decision. Like our parents and teachers who reminded us to use the soap as we grew, our tradition has also created reminders for us – our holidays. However, some of those holidays have become like the soap and the little boy. We don’t use them, we don’t mark them. This month, we celebrate one of those often-overlooked holidays, Tu B’Shevat, one of the four new years on our Jewish calendar. Tu B’Shevat is the New Year of the Trees, the day that we celebrate the birthday of every tree. But it is more than that. It is a day when we’re reminded about taking care of the environment, when we’re reminded not to be wasteful, and when we’re reminded to be responsible for nature around us. For others, it is a moment to pause to recognize the blessings in our lives and to thank God for them as, 2000 years ago, this was the day on which a tithing for the fruits was taken. And still for others, Tu B’Shevat is a day when we plant trees, especially in Israel, as a reminder that it is our responsibility to provide for the generations after us, just as our parents and grandparents provided for us. This January 15-16, whether it is through a Tu B’Shevat Seder or a different ritual you create or ask us to help create with you, our hope is that you take some time to celebrate the day and experience the beauty and meaning that it can provide in your life. * “The Soap Maker.” Three Times Chai by Laney Katz Becker. Tevet/ Shevat - Adar 5774 January - February 2014

Volume 26, No. 1 & 2

Temple Shir Shalom

I recently read a great short story about a rabbi and a soap maker.* As they were talking, the soap maker turned to the rabbi and asked, “What good is religion? Religion teaches morals, values and ethics, yet look at this world! It’s filled with pain, evil and wickedness. Rabbi, what good is religion?”

Nearby, a group of kids were playing with a ball. The rabbi pointed at them and said, “Just look at that young child. He’s absolutely filthy! And you’re a soap maker, so I ask you, what good is soap? There’s all this soap in the world, and that young boy is still dirty!”

The soap maker protested. “How can you say that? You’re a smart man, rabbi – surely you understand that soap is good only if it’s used.”

“And so it is with religion,” said the rabbi. “Our faith only makes a difference when we use it.”

I love this story because it reminds us of the beauty of our religion.

Sunday, December 15 was truly a special day. The blowing snow and freezing temperatures couldn’t keep over 400 people from attending the opening ceremonies of Project 613. Our Sofer, Rabbi Selwyn, flew in from Miami and, after saying the Sh’ma about a hundred times on his drive to Temple, joined us for a day of scribing and celebrating.

Our children paraded in the Torah artwork that they had worked on and proudly handed it off to the caring volunteers who worked quickly to assemble our own Shoresh Torah scroll. As I watched these volunteers take part in this program and the scribing sessions that took place later in the day, I was amazed at the way we all came together to support and execute Project 613. Rabbis and I began discussions about Project 613 months ago… To see this idea come to fruition is a magical thing – for someone in my position, the pinnacle of what we do…

To that end, I thank the following volunteers: Michael Pearl and Art Fishman for jumping to help with ushering, security and traffic control…Sidra Lewis and Melanie Pohl for taking care of all the little details and providing the last minute fixes we needed…Marysue & Don Munter, Wendy Doigan, Sharon Alpert, and Eric Krause for assisting with the creation of our Shoresh Torah Scroll and the overall planning of the opening ceremony…Brian Fishman, Alex Minkin, and David Guralnick for being our photographers throughout the day…To Rob Kornfeld for agreeing to be our videographer two minutes before the ceremony began…Terri Cooper and Shari Dobrusin for leading the organization and team the day of the scribing, assigning the task assignments and making sure that everything was covered and attended to…Janice Schwartz for running countless errands the days before and assisting with the children the day of…Leslie Moskowitz, Tracie Engel, Lyle Wolberg, and Scott Mazius for welcoming our members and escorting them throughout the scribing process…Gayle Beck for her assistance at the memento station…To Fran Bell and Pam Kornfeld for leading the planning and execution of the opening ceremony, including the wonderful lunch we all enjoyed…Allison Parr for her creative expertise and laser focus in leading the advertising/marketing efforts from the moment the idea of Project 613 became a reality…To our president Lloyd Doigan for his backing of this idea from the very beginning, insisting that this will be our finest moment as a congregation – his smile from ear to ear on Sunday was all the confirmation I needed that he was right…And to Josh Sherbin, the overall project chair, for his leadership, wisdom, and guidance of everyone. Effortlessly steering our weekly conference calls to assure we stay on task to reminding us what our goals are and that this effort, this experience, needs to be made accessible to everyone, regardless of cost. Thank you Josh for taking my calls late at night and just listening…

Such a wonderful group of people to work with; I am truly blessed. A tangential benefit from this past Sunday was the number of members who asked to help with the project. Watching others give of their time is inspiring; people want to help. If you feel that way, call me or email me ([email protected]) and let me know.

I would love to add you to my thank you list…

Interesting in scribing a letter? Give the office a call at 248-737-8700 and sign up for an available session on Sunday, February 9th, Monday, February 10th, Sunday, April 27th, or Monday, April 28th.

From the desk of . . .

ShoreshSARAH ALLYN associate director

My favorite book as a little girl was called, Miss Rumphius, a story about an elderly woman who roamed around town sowing seeds so that, in the springtime, the community would have beautiful flowers. Miss Rumphius had lived a full life studying, travelling to far away places, and retiring by the sea. But as a child her grandfather told her, “You must do something to make the world more beautiful.” The story ends with Miss Rumphius telling her great-niece that she, too, must do something to make the world more beautiful.

I don’t think Miss Rumphius was Jewish, but themes of tikkun olam, repairing the world, and imparting the importance of this act from generation to generation, l’dor v’dor, certainly resonate throughout this books. What can we, as Jews, do to make the world more beautiful? And how do we teach our children to do the same?

In the coming months at SHORESH we will be exploring themes of tikkun olam in our classrooms. Students will be learning the meaning of tikkun olam, why we as Jews are dedicated to repairing the world, and how we can do acts of tikkun olam in our everyday lives.

Sunday, January 19, will be our annual Tikkun Olam-a-Thon. In place of SHORESH, our families will gather at Temple to take part in a morning of tikkun olam. As in years past, we will partner with several local charitable organizations for many different types of service projects out in the community and on-site at our building. Last year students and families stocked non-perishables at Yad Ezra, created “study kits” full of school supplies for a local shelter, and built “kitty castles” for feline friends at the Humane Society. We are excited to be partnering with these and other organizations this year. In the next few weeks you will be receiving information on how to sign up for Tikkun Olam-a-Thon projects. Please call us with any questions!

There are many ways to bring tikkun olam into our homes and teach our children the importance of repairing the world by our own example. Having a tzedakah box that the whole family can contribute to is a meaningful way to make a family donation to an organization of your choosing. Once every few months, have a family closet clean-up day. Pack up clothes you no longer wear and make a donation to a collection agency. Sending kind letters and hand-drawn pictures to children’s hospitals or veteran organizations is always a great way to help repair someone’s world.

Please join us at the Tikkun Olam-a-Thon on January 19 for a day of community service. As we learn about repairing the world at SHORESH in the coming weeks, keep in mind that there is always something we can do to make our world more beautiful.

Marsha Mitnick early childhood learning director

In the next few months new families will be walking through the door of The Learning Center. Some will be members of Temple Shir Shalom. Some will be neighbors of The Learning Center. Some will be friends of the families that already attend The Learning Center. All of them will be looking to enroll their child in preschool for the fall of 2014.

This is one of my favorite jobs as Director. I get to show off The Learning Center. With pride I get to introduce the staff of The Learning Center. With joy I encourage these future preschool parents to look through the window and observe our students. Nothing speaks louder than observing our classrooms in action. And then I do what Rabbi Dannel Schwartz referred as “Marsha speak.” I educate these parents about what we really do at The Learning Center. We help children learn how to think, play, and learn. Each child does it differently and each child brings their individuality to the group.

It is through recognizing their individual differences that each child is so successful in their learning here. Children don’t leave their emotions at home when they come into school. They don’t even leave them in their coat pockets. Emotions are a motivating force in a child’s learning process. At The Learning Center our kids practice mastering negotiating, critical thinking, attention skills, and focus. They think they are having fun and playing. That is the point. The Learning Center kids love to come to school. They don’t realize how hard they are working.

A child could start their journey here at 6 months. Our Play and Stay class is for parents and kids 6 months through 3 years. It is amazing when you meet a child at 6 months and watch them go off to kindergarten at 5. The beauty of The Learning Center is often that these families become members of Temple Shir Shalom, attending Shoresh, experiencing the relationship of knowing our rabbis and connecting with their Judaism. This sense of community and continuity all happened because of a young child and a parent looking for a preschool.

Parents that have been a part of The Learning Center and now have kids in kindergarten and first grade tell us how wonderful their children are doing. They were prepared to learn the next steps needed in elementary school. More importantly, families that become members have found a home like no other.

How do we do it? To understand this, you have to come to The Learning Center to see.

Enrollment has started. Please call 248-406-4255 to schedule a visit.

Please contact Marsha Mitnick at [email protected] with any questions you may have.

B’nai Mitzvah!

daughter of Jennifer and Todd Kroll, will become a bat mitzvah at the Saturday morning Shabbat service on January 11, 2014. She is the granddaughter of Beverly and Arnold Lantor and Barbara and Albert Kroll and a student at Hillel Day School. Lilley loves spending time with her friends and dancing. She enjoys travel and visiting Charlevoix every summer. Lilley has felt very comfortable at Shir Shalom from the very first Shabbat service she attended here and, to her, becoming a bat mitzvah means that she has been gifted with greater responsibilities. She is grateful to her family for supporting her in everything she does.

Lilley Kroll,

daughter of Laurie and Sam Zeidman, will become a bat mitzvah at the Saturday morning Shabbat service on January 25, 2014. She is the granddaughter of Andrea and Michael Jeross and the late Helen and Gerald Zeidman, and the great-granddaughter of Ethel Weisblatt. A student at O.E. Dunckel Middle School, she has learned a lot about Judaism and made many close friends during her years at Shir Shalom – it’s like family. Visiting the Holocaust Memorial Museum had a deep impact on her and she will never forget what she learned about how our people were violated. To her, becoming a bat mitzvah means that she is growing into an adult within the Jewish religion, that she is taking on more responsibilities and committing to continue to learn about Judaism as she grows older. In the years to come, Madison wants to travel to Israel. She hopes to learn more about her heritage and hopes to some day carry on her family’s traditions with her own children.

Madison Zeidman,

son of Jamie and Scott Carrick, will become a bar mitzvah at the Friday evening Shabbat service on January 31, 2014. He is the grandson of Bonnie and Dr. Michael Rosenberg, James Ringlein and the late Mary Ringlein, and Sharon Carrick and the late Jerry Carrick. Noah attends O.E. Dunckel Middle School and loves attending the URJ 6 Points Sports Academy where he’s majoring in soccer. He describes his visit to the Holocaust Memorial Center as one of the most powerful experiences he’s ever had. He learned a lot about how difficult life was for our people in the concentration camps and how millions of Jews died so senselessly. Currently Noah assists at Shoresh, volunteers at Forgotten Harvest, and concentrates on his Hebrew studies. Participating in the Madrichim programs has helped him to realize that everyone has a special place in this world, and after his bar mitzvah he would like to stay involved with Temple and the Jewish community. Preparing for his bar mitzvah has been a lot of hard work, and he is thankful to the Rabbis, Cantor Steyer, his tutor Geri Zacks, and especially his parents for all of the help they have given him.

Noah Robert Carrick,

B’nai Mitzvah!

son of Linda Rissman and Michael Krivitsky, will become a bar mitzvah at the Friday evening Shabbat service on February 28, 2014. He is the grandson of Pearl and Bob Rissman and Roz and Norman Krivitsky. Steve is a student at West Hills Middle School and tries to be well-balanced between his academic responsibilities and his love of sports, especially hockey. He says that the bar mitzvah process has helped him mature in many ways. By adding another commitment to his daily life he has learned how to take on and balance even more responsibility in general. He has also learned how to enjoy the achievements of others when he celebrated the b’nai mitzvah of his classmates. Steve loved working with his tutor, Riki Wexler, whose one-on-one attention helped him to grow much stronger in his Hebrew studies. He is outrageously grateful to his parents, who have raised him and helped him to become who he is today, and also that he has such loving grandparents and awesome older brothers

P613 Opening CeremonyJosh sherbin Project 613 chair and board trustee

Thanks to each of you who braved a cold Michigan morning and icy roads to come together on December 15th to celebrate the start of our year long journey to welcome Shir Shalom’s eighth Torah that will be kept in our ark.

While each of our Torahs has a unique history, our newest Torah will have a story that we actually inscribe and tell together as a congregation through an experience we are calling “Project 613”. I have the privilege and honor to lead this effort.

Although it sounds like a national security task force, Project 613 is about each of us personally taking part in the 613th mitzvah: the responsibility of each Jew to write a Sefer Torah.

The pomegranate with its 613 seeds (we didn’t count, but relied on Jewish pomegranate experts) symbolizes this mitzvah and so you see it on our brochure and popping up in your email.

Our new Torah, which is one of the most important ways we will celebrate our 25th anniversary as a congregation, will be a joint effort between each of us and our scribe as each of the 304,805 letters comes to life. A scribe will work over the next year in Jerusalem and Florida to write our Torah, but will leave letters unwritten so that when our new Torah actually travels here four times before next Chanukah, just as it has today, we will have the opportunity to write the letters. Our hands will hold and guide the expert hands of the scribe who will travel to Temple each time our Torah visits. As tradition tells us, one who writes even a single letter in a Torah or causes one to be written through their support fulfills the 613th and final commandment of writing a Torah.

Our work together on our new Torah will be handed down from generation to generation, l’ Dor v’Dor, as we join with family and friends to both remember those who came before us and inscribe a legacy for our children and grandchildren.

Project 613 is a gift of Torah – a link to our past and a connection to our future – and through our generosity as a congregation an opportunity to insure the future of our Temple.

Each time our Torah visits, including today, we will have private scribing sessions for each and every member of our Temple family that wants to take part. Together with the writing of a letter, there is an opportunity to make a contribution to Temple to memorialize your participation in Project 613. While you may dedicate a favorite Torah portion, a high holiday reading, or countless other choices that our Rabbis will help you to choose – each of which has a dedication level – the letter you write will be the next naturally occurring letter in the Torah. The letter you write will symbolize your connection to our new Torah, the fulfillment of the 613th mitzvot, and the bright promise of Shir Shalom’s future. Contributions to Project 613 will be honored and remembered with a permanent installation at Temple.

We will ensure our Temple legacy with funds raised through our dedication of a Torah passage – funds that will be used to repair and maintain our Torahs, support the programming and outreach that is so critical to the strength and success of our growing congregation, and enhance the facilities of our Temple home.

And most importantly, Temple and our Judaism is about community. No family will be excluded from writing in our new Torah or otherwise taking part in Project 613 due to financial considerations. Our goal is that every family in Temple takes part in celebrating and creating our heritage by taking part in a scribing session.

10

P613 Kick-Off (cont’d)If you are not already signed up to scribe today, our new Torah will visit again in February, April, and October together with a scribe. By going to the Project 613 website or calling Temple, you can reserve your spot today for you and your family to take part in this memorable and impactful experience.

Before we get on with the real stars of this morning, I need to share a few thank-yous that have made Project 613 come to life and will continue to guide it over the next twelve months. We are blessed to have Steve and Margie Ziff’s family’s generous participation as the lead donor for Project 613, a commitment that is both heartwarming and inspiring. Our Rabbis, Temple Board under Lloyd Doigan’s leadership, and Temple staff under Andre’s leadership are the foundation of this magical project. An energized leadership committee made up of Scott Mazius, Fran Bell, Pam Kornfeld, Allison Parr, Terri Cooper, Shari Dobrusin and Howard Moroff – each members of our Board – ensure that all the details fit together. Our scribing partner, Sofer on Site, guides us through the scribing process, drawing on their 25 years of experience. The many other volunteers who have and will give of their time and effort to do something extraordinary as we move Project 613 forward. And, most importantly, our thanks to each of you as you embrace this opportunity and generously support our Temple community.

Thank you.

It’s winter and you’ve been cooped up in the house too long. Time to get up off the couch and come to a Brotherhood meeting! How can you pass up on the chance to meet up with the most interesting men (and two gals) of Temple Shir Shalom, share a meal, network, and make plans for charitable acts? It’s really quite a nice night out during the middle of the week. We meet the second Wednesday of each month.

In just a few months it will be time for the much anticipated Maven Gallery, so be on the lookout for that special event.

Another important function of Brotherhood is to promote the planting of trees in Israel. Every tree sold not only helps Israel, but also a portion of the sale helps support the Temple. Please consider buying trees for that special event in your life by calling the Temple office.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

What’s on My Mind? From the President: LLoyd doigan

Recently our Executive Director, Andre Douville, and I attended a Temple Directors’ conference at the JCC. The conference included Conservative and Reform Temple Directors, Rabbis, and Temple Presidents and addressed issues affecting the Jewish community such as the recent Pew and other reports that highlighted a shrinking Jewish community in Detroit and other areas of the United States. Since the last counting, the Reform and Conservative communities lost about 8% of their number while the Orthodox community only lost about 4%. While

no solution was reached to stabilize and even grow our numbers, many profound questions were asked, including, “how does a Jewish institution compete for people’s time given the plethora of other things they may wish to do?”

My perception is that the rabbinate in the US has failed by believing that the message in Judaism should be enough to “win” any competition for people’s time. But this isn’t true at Shir Shalom as is evidenced by our formula for continuing growth. We and our rabbis succeed in many ways. Firstly, the rabbis and other teachers infuse Judaism in our children at Shoresh by teaching while the children are having fun. The children want to come to school and develop a fondness and a basic understanding of Jewish values. Secondly, our rabbis’ sense of community is so great that they most probably know your name. Their warmth, wisdom, and accessibility are legend. Thirdly, our belief that Judaism is an institution of inclusion and not exclusion allows us to roll with our changing demographics by honoring and welcoming anybody who wishes to join us. Finally, we offer continuing education that enriches all of our congregants.

We should be proud of our organization and beliefs, as best evidenced Sunday, December 15 as we began writing our Torah. If you were there, you could not be unmoved by this most important emotional experience I have ever had the pleasure to be part of Shir Shalom. Please ask your friends about it and come see it for yourself. Participate. We will continue to grow and help Judaism by making Jews.
