November 5, 2010

Fellow JetBlue Pilots,

This week the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) took the next step in our eff orts to achieve a stronger voice, a legal standing to protect ourselves in a rapidly changing environment, and the added security that comes with an enforceable collective bargaining agreement by forwarding to you Authorization for Representation Election cards.

The JetBlue ALPA Organizing Committ ee (JAOC) is excited to start our formal campaign to achieve ALPA representation aft er a year of preparations. Discussions with you, the JetBlue pilots, convinced us that there is widespread interest and strong support for this eff ort. While there are over 260 members on the JAOC, it’s clear from our one-on-one conversations with you that there exists a much larger majority of JetBlue pilots who desire ALPA representation. The recurring messages that we hear are that you want meaningful input in decisions that aff ect us, benefi ts that fi t the unique needs of pilots and their families, and the legal standing to participate in corporate transactions that are occurring and will aff ect us profoundly.

As the JAOC was being formed, ALPA set high benchmarks to ensure solid support for this eff ort and, more importantly, to build a strong, unifi ed pilot group aft er a representation election is completed. The decision to move forward was easily made as the JetBlue pilots comfortably exceeded these benchmarks.

As we said in our October 8 lett er introducing ourselves, we are a diverse group of JetBlue pilots who share important goals—the long-term success of JetBlue Airways and achieving a stronger voice for ourselves through the resources available with ALPA representation.

So, why are we taking this step?

First, because JetBlue pilots—fi ercely loyal to and supportive of our company—believe we need the legal standing to participate more fully in the decisions that aff ect our future. Second, because we believe that ALPA’s structure and resources give us the power to shape the relationship we want with our company and the tools to be successful. As JetBlue pilots, we deserve a business partner who works with us to achieve these goals.

Over the past year we’ve learned about the issues that concern you most. We believe that legal representation through the Air Line Pilots Association gives us the greatest chance to address those issues successfully. We know that JetBlue pilots will benefi t from the backing of ALPA because:

The airline industry is changing fast. We need a meaningful voice and the legal standing to participate in corporate decisions that aff ect us.

“Personal employment” agreements don’t work and leave each pilot “on his/her own.” An enforceable collective bargaining agreement will confi rm the structure and protection we build as a unifi ed group.

JetBlue pilots working together with a strong, unified voice to better influence and control our future.

JetBlue pilots —not some distant “third party”—will make decisions for us, utilizing ALPA’s tools, resources, and expertise. WE will elect OUR representatives, determine the relationship with management WE want, set OUR negotiating goals, and ratify OUR own agreement.

Health and retirement benefi ts will be negotiated and secure. Our families deserve that certainty and security.

Size does matt er, and resources are key! Legal standing and a contract are critical elements to ensuring our future, but so are resources. The support of 53,000 other pilots, teams of professional negotiators, benefi t experts, our own scope att orneys, fi nancial analysts, safety/accident experts, and more will provide the information we need to make sound decisions for ourselves.

In meetings scheduled in the upcoming week and continuing over the next few months, we’ll provide much more detail and information about how these concerns have been handled by other pilot groups. You will also have the chance to talk directly to other ALPA pilots about their experience as well as ALPA’s professional staff , who are experts in their fi elds.

We urge you to take the time to gather information and facts fi rsthand: att end meetings and get your questions answered. In the end, it’s up to us, JetBlue pilots, to take the next step. Completing a confi dential Authorization for Representation Election card and returning it to ALPA or a JAOC member today is that next step. Remember, signing a card only authorizes ALPA to petition the NMB so that we can have a secret ballot election; it is not a vote for ALPA.

Aft er researching and discussing the subject ourselves, the undersigned pilots believe fi rmly that ALPA provides us the straightest and best course to succeed. We welcome you to join our ranks as a fellow JAOC member.

We’re excited to take this next step and look forward to continuing these important discussions with you as we shape our future.
