    The President sPoint of View

    With both the Jewish and secular holidays tucked neatly behindus, this week is the harbinger of a slightly calmer pace for a few short months. Our snowbirds are in Florida. We head to themountains to ski, use our fireplaces more frequently, andappreciate the extra time to think and plan with a renewedsense of determination.

    I often ponder a question I have asked since I was a teenager. Inaddition to friends my age, I have always sustained friendshipswith adults much older, wiser and certainly more mature thanme. I remember vividly a conversation with my mother when Iwas off to visit one such set of adult friends for the weekend.Acknowledging why I cared so much for them, I asked her,

    Seriously, what could they possibly get from me?

    When I went to live in Paris in my early twenties, I rekindled arelationship with a devout French Catholic woman 40 years my senior (that began was I was just 19). We had nothing incommon not language, age, culture or religion, no shared

    ground or experience. Yet the relationship endures, has grownand holds a place in my life and heart like none other for the past30+ years. We are family: her children are my French siblings,my children call her Granny France, her grandchildren andmy sons are like cousins. We have shared all of our respectivemilestones. Her triumphs are my joys and her 92 years (and theway she has lived them so far) are an integral part of my roadmap. How did we get that?

    The people who share themselves freely and stay connected sowillingly teach us how to make room for multiple generationsbeyond our own family trees and circles. They befriend, mentorand celebrate the achievements of folks 10, 20, 30, even 40 years

    younger. It s an ongoing gift there for the taking. Of course,we all have the opportunity to pay it forward; and while we may not always know how and to what degree, we understand thatthese relationships are usually reciprocal.

    So how and where does this translate into our synagogue?Everywhere and in almost everything we do. First, we have thesepeople in every group and demographic of our congregation:mentors and mentees, givers and recipients, counselors andlisteners, friends and pals. Second, not every kinship need rise tothe level of a 30-year bond. There are multiple opportunities forevery level and combination of connection light and short,medium and deep, infrequent but enduring, surface butconsistent, long and reliable. And all are valuable.

    The key, of course, is to identify: Who are we (and who do wewant to be) in these affiliations? Who are our children and

    grandchildren (and who could they be)in this context? How and when willwe (and they) venture in (further)?

    In the small respite of these two shortmonths before we jump back into the bustle of springtime incongregational life, I challenge you to begin, renew andcontinue your intergenerational connections here. Choose oneadult, one teen, one child or one family and encourage yourfamily members to do the same. If even 25% of you takes thischallenge, imagine the impact on TSTI.

    Here are just a few ideas you might consider to get started:host another member family for Shabbat dinner, reach out to

    a Renaissance member for a cup of coffee (and if you are aRenaissance member, reach out to a younger member for thatsame cup of coffee);

    partner with a religious school child on his/her mitzvahproject, participate in a preschool class one day, volunteer tohelp serve lunch to seniors who come to us for programmingfrom senior housing in the community, join the caringcommittee;

    really really really really really introduce yourself to members you don t know atservices, festivals, in the hallways and at the Oneg Shabbat, callsomeone you know but haven t seen around Temple in a while,drop a note to one person outside of your regular circle eachweek, come to one Temple event or program that you would notordinarily select or think is relevant to your age or demographic;

    invite someone into your life or become a regular insomeone else s life.

    The actions we take to realize these decisions have an amazingdomino effect. They enrich the lives of others, enhance ourcommunity, deepen our congregational ties and truly offer usindividually and collectively, the joy of both giving andreceiving. After a season full of a different kind of gift, this isone you can truly exchange.

    It s 2011 a new year replete with endless challenges andpossibilities. Join me take this challenge for yourself andfor all of us.

    Dear Families,

    Welcome back. Thanks for making ChanukahMania such afabulous success! See photos, page 2, but be sure to log on to

    your microSteps account or click on our TSTI websitewww.tsti.org to check out more great pictures. I was especially moved by the heartfelt holiday cards that our students andparents created for injured soldiers during the morning-longcelebration. The cards of thanks and well wishes have been sentto the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

    Our 2 nd grade Calendar in a Day Family Education Program isSunday January 9 and our 1 st Grade Hebrew Olympics Family Education Program is Sunday, January 23. Family educationprograms provide parents with the opportunity to learn togetherwith their children, to experience religious school, have fun andschmooze with other parents. Following both family educationprograms, families are invited to join the Religious School Boardfor a pizza lunch.

    Sunday, January 30 is the annual Mitzvot of Metrowest programat the JCC in Whippany. At this event, 6 th grade students willexplore numerous mitzvah project ideas in preparation for theirBat/Bar Mitzvah year. Attendance for both students and parentsis strongly encouraged. The exhibit will help facilitate a family discussion regarding the type of mitzvah project that is mostmeaningful to the child. The program is in lieu of classes on thatday.

    I have said it many times before--I am privileged to work withan amazing group of teachers who regularly inspire me withtheir energy, unique ideas and creative projects. The teachers of the Linda and Rudy Slucker Religious School have recently set a

    goal to do one joint mitzvah project or religious study projecteach month. Most recently, a group of our teachers traveled tothe Hebrew Union College in NYC for a morning of Jewishlearning and exploration. Following religious school on Sunday,

    January 9, many of our teachers will participate in The LearningConference: Ancient Ideas / Modern Techniques, Experiential Jewish Learning in the 21st Century at the JCC in Whippany.And on the morning of Tuesday, January 26, many of ourteaching staff will volunteer at a local food pantry.

    Finally, on Friday, January 28 our 4 th graders will lead us inprayer during the evening Shabbat service. Students have beenworking diligently with Vivian Gibilisco and Cantor Finn on themusic and prayers. We hope your family will join us for theservice and dinner to follow.

    In lieu of my typical rambling article about life in the preschool,please enjoy the letter I received for the true definition of amensch . For informational purposes Wee Care is the committeeof Preschool Board parents who volunteer to take care of our

    young families in time of need. All names and some details havebeen eliminated, not to protect their privacy so much as to pointout that it s not about who these people are, but rather how thesepeople act. This is truly a wonderful community we have built,one family at a time.

    Dear Wee Care,

    I wanted to write you a heartfelt thank you for your recentsupport. About a month and a half ago, I woke up and drove tomy doctor s office for what I thought was a minor joint sprain. I d

    given birth to my second child this past May and had justassumed that the intense fatigue/soreness/and brain fog thataccompanied my knee/leg pain were all due to my being a new mom again with a very active toddler in tow. It never crossed my

    mind that my leg pain was related to my other symptoms or thatI might have a serious infection. I thought perhaps I dunknowingly hurt my leg holding one child while trying to pullthe other out of a shopping cart...who knew? Moms do this sortof thing all day long.

    When I got to my doctor s office, I could barely put weight onmy left leg. She took one look at my swollen leg/knee and sentme to the emergency room. I was shocked. I ended up being inthe hospital for 3 days and was diagnosed with Stage 3 LymeDisease. I hadn t even said a proper goodbye to my children thatmorning because I didn t want to make a fuss and risk leavingthe sitter with two crying kids. On top of that, my 6 month old

    son was still nursing and I hadn t left enough breast milk. It wasa difficult few days.

    Luckily I had help from family and my husband was able to takea few days off work. He told our 2-year-old daughter s preschoolteachers that I was in the hospital and I assume they told schooladministrators who then alerted Wee Care.

    I don t know if I can effectively express to you how hard it wasto come home in crutches and not be able to carry/lift my kidsor nurse my son for weeks. But in the spirit of Thanksgiving and

    Our B nai Mitzvah

    gratitude I had to let you know how amazing I think you are andhow exceptionally kind, helpful and thoughtful your mommy repwas.

    The first time I met the mommy rep and her daughter was duringlast year s Winter Session of Toddler Time about 2 months afterwe d moved to South Orange. I remember her coming to ToddlerTime a few times with her own daughter as well as my neighbor s 2-year-old when her mom wasn t able to make it.What struck me though was how watchful and present she waswith my neighbor s daughter. While her own daughterparticipated, this mom made every effort to make sure my neighbor s daughter was also having a great time and happily

    sat with her when she wasn t in the mood to join in. And as I msure many of you know it s not easy to manage two 2-yr-olds in aplay space!

    When I got sick, the mommy rep cooked for us, baked for us,checked to see how we were doing, took my daughter back andforth from school and ballet class, and as if that wasn t already above and beyond what she could have done, she continually asked if we needed any additional help! She could not have beenmore generous with her time and help, especially given how extremely busy she is already on a daily basis! She wasamazing!! Thank you, Wee Care for caring. Your help was very,very much appreciated!
