General Instructions Concerning Stability1. All watertight openings shall be maintained in the closed position while the vessel is underway. 2. All below deck spaces not used for ballast shall be pumped to minimum content at all times. 3. Deck cargo shall be positively secured against shifting in a seaway prior to leaving protected waters. 4. The Person-in-Charge should make every effort to determine the cause of any substantial list of the vessel before taking any corrective actions. 5. It shall by the Person-in-Charges responsibility to maintain the vessel in a satisfactory stability condition at all times. 6. The Lightship weight approved by ABS includes jacket runners, pivot arms, jacking units and pull bars. When the vessel is being used in a floatover installation, these items are to be deducted. See Weight Summary on Page A4. 7. Any loading condition not contained herein is to be specifically approved by an ABS Stability & Load Line Group office prior to departure.

Stability CriteriaThe ship in transit is to comply with IMO A.749 (18) Ch 4.5.6, which is recommended for vessels whose characteristics render compliance with the Ch 3.1.2 impracticable. 1) The area under the curve of righting lever (GZ Curve) should not be less than .070 meter-radians up to an angle of 15 when the maximum righting lever (GZ) occurs at 15 and .055 meter-radians up to an angle of 30 when the maximum righting lever (GZ) occurs at 30 or above. Where the maximum righting lever (GZ) occurs at angles between 15 and 30, the corresponding area under the righting lever curve should be: .055 + .001 * (30 - max) meter-radians Where max is the angle of heel in degrees at which the righting lever curve reach its maximum. 2) The area under the righting lever curve (GZ Curve) between the angles of heel of 30 and 40 or between 30 and the downflooding angle, f, if this is less than 40, should not be less than .030 meter-radians. 3) The righting lever (GZ) should be at least .20m at an angle of heel equal to or greater than 30. 4) The maximum righting lever (GZ) should occur at an angle of heel not less than 15. 5) The initial transverse metacentric height (GMo) should not be less than .15m.

In addition to this IMO Resolution, the barge should also meet these stability standards outlined by the USCG as given below. 1) Primary Dynamic Criterion The area under the righting lever curve (GZ Curve) should not be less than 4.57 meter-degrees up to the maximum ordinate of the curve, or the angle of downflooding, or 40 whichever occurs first. 2) Secondary Weather Criterion To also be considered when the barge has a substantial deck house(s), or it is anticipated that deck cargo with a large lateral area will be carried. The initial metacentric height (GM) should be as follows:

Where: P = .055+(L/1309)2 tonne/m2 L = Length of the barge between the perpendiculars (m). If cargo is to be carried which extends beyond the extremities of the barge, then the combined overall length of the barge and cargo is to be used for the value of L. A = Projected lateral area of the portion of the pontoon and deck cargo above the waterline (m2). H = The vertical distance from the center of A to the center of the underwater lateral area, or approximately to a point at one-half of the draft (m). W = Displacement (tonne) = 14 or the angle of heel at which one-half the freeboard to the deck edge is immersed, whichever is less. When the freeboard exceeds the draft, one half the draft should be used to limit the angle of heel.
