PERSPECTIVES

Change with climate changeMonday, 7 May, 2012

Embracing change is an importantbehavior as change is inevitable. It seemsobvious that since the climate is changing wehave to change as well.

Scientific evidence of climate change isincreasing. Many private and public initiativeshave made climate change a well-known topicfor action. However, the level of awareness isnot yet high enough, and the need for decisiveaction is not yet thoroughly recognized.

Climate is a common good, crucial to all ofus and to future generation. What we can see sofar is that the interests of nations regardingclimate change are not aligned.

Climate oriented-technologies areimproving the status of private enterprise. Some examples are the automatic industryoffering cars with lighter weight and enginesthat can run on biofuel, plug-in electric carsand even fuel-cell vehicles; the chemical industryreviewing production process to save significantamount of energy; the construction industrypromoting affordable green buildings. And weshould push for energy replacement whereverpossible, intensifying our demands for solar-,wind-, and water-generated power.

One decisive form of action to achievelong-term impact on climate change iseducation. All schools from primary touniversities should teach climate science. Asindividuals we should also constantly learnabout environmental protection, health andsafety impact and new technologies becomingavailable.

Climate change requires action. It offersbusiness opportunities. So, we have to embracethat change without hesitation.

May—A group of scientiststook to the skies in a slow-moving airship on Thursdayin search of meteorites thatrained over California’s goldcountry last month.

It’s the latest hunt forextraterrestrial fragments fromthe 22 April explosion thatwas witnessed over a swathof Northern California and

weighing in at 19 grams, or theweight of one AA battery.

Researchers from NASAand the nonprofit SETIInstitute in Mountain View,Calif, were on the lookout forlarger fragments. After a briefweather delay, they took offfrom a Sacramento airfieldaboard an airship outfittedwith sensors and cameras.

From the air, scientists

plan to follow up with a searchparty.

“Only small pieces havebeen found. There has to bebig pieces out there,” SETIInstitute meteor astronomerPeter Jenniskens said beforethe trip. “We’re just hopingto collect more meteorites forresearch.”

Days after theapproximately 154,300-poundmeteor plunged throughEarth’s atmosphere with aloud sonic boom that washeard from Sacramento to LasVegas, Jenniskens organizeda team and found a 4-grammeteorite in the parking lot ofa park.

NASA estimated theminivan-sized meteorreleased energy equal to one-third the explosive power ofthe atomic bomb dropped onHiroshima during World WarII. An event this size occursonce a year usually overunpopulated areas.

Were distant destroyed worlds Earth-like?WARWICK, (England), 6

May—Dust from destroyedplanets that once orbiteddwarf stars suggests theshattered worlds were similarin composition to Earth, Britishastrophysicists say.

University of Warwickscientists using the HubbleSpace Telescope to study thechemical composition of theatmospheres of white dwarfstars found the mostfrequently occurring elementsin the dust around four whitedwarfs observed wereoxygen, magnesium, iron andsilicon — the four elementsthat make up roughly 93percent of the Earth.

“What we are seeing

today in these white dwarfsseveral hundred light yearsaway could well be a snapshotof the very distant future ofthe Earth,” Warwickastrophysicist Boris Gansickesaid in a university releaseThursday.

“As stars like our sunreach the end of their life, theyexpand to become red giantswhen the nuclear fuel in theircores is depleted,” he said.

The orbits of the planetscould become destabilized bythis, he said, causingcollisions that could shatterentire worlds, leaving

fragments and dust aroundthe star with chemicalcomposition mirroring that ofthe destroyed planets.

One of the white dwarfstars studied stood out fromthe rest owing to the relativeoverabundance of theelements iron, nickel andsulphur in the dust surroundingit, researchers said.

“It is entirely feasible thatin [white dwarf star]PG0843+516 we see theaccretion of such fragmentsmade from the core material ofwhat was once a terrestrialexoplanet.”—Internet

Mars rover sees evidence ofancient water

STONY BROOK, 6 May—NASA’s Mars rover Opportunityhas found evidence of water flows at an ancient impact craterthat could have been conducive to life, US researchers say.

The latest discovery by the surprisingly long-livedOpportunity was made at the rim of the Endeavour Crater, alarge ancient impact crater on Mars measuring 14 miles indiameter, researchers said.

“The rover discovered evidence for low temperatureliquid water and environments that would be conducive forlife,” said Scott M McLennan, a geochemistry professor atStony Brook University in New York and a member of the teamthat published a paper on the findings on Friday.

Opportunity, one of two exploration rovers that landedon Mars eight years ago for what was planned as a three-month mission, reached Endeavour Crater last August afterdriving for three years from another Martian crater, Victoria.

Opportunity found elevated levels of zinc in some of therocks at the rim of the crater, suggesting a hydrothermalsystem — warm water — had been running through the rocks

Iceman mummy yields oldestblood seen

BOLZANO, (Italy), 6May—Researchers studyinga 5,300-year-old body foundfrozen in the Italian Alps in1991 say they found red bloodcells around his wounds, theoldest ever seen.

The frozen body isremarkably preserved, andscientists writing in theJournal of the Royal Societysay that preservation extendsto the bleeding that occurredbefore his death, the BBCreported on Wednesday.

Blood cells degrade

quickly, and earliersearches for blood withinthe frozen body showed nosigns of blood cells, researchers said.

Boeing spacecraft parachute test a successALAMO, (Nev), 6 May—Boeing completed a parachute test in Nevada

for its new spacecraft, which would transport crews to and from theInternational Space Station, NASA said.

A helicopter lifted the Crew Space Transportation spacecraft onWednesday about 10,000 feet above the Delamar Dry Lake Bed nearAlamo, Nev, and dropped the capsule. A two-parachute sequencedeployed, and the capsule dropped smoothly to the ground, cushionedby six inflated air bags, a release from NASA said on Thursday.

“Boeing’s parachute demonstrations are a clear sign NASA ismoving in the right direction of enabling the American aerospacetransportation industry to flourish under this partnership,” NASA’sCommercial Crew Program Manager Ed Mango said. “The investmentswe’re making now are enabling this new path forward of getting our crewsto (low-Earth orbit) and potentially the space station as soon as possible.”

The capsule is designed to work with a variety of expendable rockets,Boeing said in a release on Thursday.

Ancient fleas plagued ancient dinosaurs

This ancient “flea-like” insect, Pseudopulex jurassicus, lived 165 million years ago. It used a long proboscis tofeed on the blood of dinosaurs, with a bite that would

have been unusually painful.—INTERNET

CORVALLIS, 6 May—No creature is safe from fleas, not even dinosaurs that had to endure the bites of giantflea-like insects 165 million years ago, a US zoologist says.

George Poinar Jr, a zoology professor at OregonState University who wrote a commentary on the find offossils of the giant insects by Chinese scientists, saidthey were probably 10 times the size of a flea you mightfind on the family dog. “These were insects much largerthan modern fleas and from the size of their proboscis wecan tell they would have been mean,” he said.

Poinar’s commentary appeared in the same issueof Current Biology that reported the Chinese discovery.

“You wouldn’t talk much about the good old daysif you got bit by this insect,” Poinar said in an OSUrelease on Tuesday. “It would have felt about like ahypodermic needle going in — a flea shot, if not a flushot. We can be thankful our modern fleas are notnearly this big.” The soft-bodied, flea-like insectsfound in fossil form in Inner Mongolia may be theevolutionary ancestors of modern fleas but are morelikely a separate and now extinct lineage, he said.

Dubai plans underwater hotel made of submerged discs, not that it should surprise you

Rest your head 10 meters below the ocean waves.INTERNET

DUBAI, 6 May — To saythat the city of Dubai — locatedin the United Arab Emirates— is a playground for thewealthy would be a grossunderstatement. The urbanwonderland is home to someof the most extravagantdisplays of affluence on Earth,so a new hotel popping upwouldn’t normally makeheadlines. But when the hotel

will send guests to roomslocated 10 meters below thesea, well, that changes things.

Apparently bored withthe blasé above-ground digsavailable all over the city, aDeep Ocean Technology ismaking your submarinedreams a reality with “Discus,”a resort for people who preferlook at some lush ocean lifeover a crowded cityscape.

When construction iscompleted, Discus will featurea large, above-water disc —complete with a helipad, ofcourse — where visitors canenjoy food, drink, and anyother pleasure money can buy. Then, when night falls, guestscan retreat down to themassive underwater portionof the resort where theextravagant suites reside.

Rooms will feature floor-to-ceiling views of underwater

splendor, and the wealthytourists who can afford a roomwill be treated not only toaquatic plants and animals, but also the calming quiet ofbeing 10 meters below thehustle and bustle of oceansidelife. MYA NANDAR AND MYANMAR THINGYAN By Ba Than

Myanmars by tradition reckon the years, months anddays by the lunar calendar, and Tagu marks the Thingyanfestival which washes out the old year and heralds the newyear the next day after King Saccra’s return to the celestialabode of awaiting four queens, so anxious that the earthlynymphs of Thingyan might not send him back, or that hewished not return. The fitting time for this article was lastweek. It will take the author a full year to await the nextThingyan to see in print. Wishing readers to enjoy MyaNandar the theme song, Myoma Nyein the composer,Myoma music and the Silver Swan, the author with apologyhereby presents the endearing spirit of mirth and hilarity.Traditionally the commencement of Thingyan and theadvent of the New Year was calculated by a team of mostlearned astrologers of the realm, appointed by the Myanmarkings of the royal court, and later after Independence bythe State and publicly notified through the news media.Correspondingly Thingyan falls more or less between 13to 17April by the Gregorian calendar.

Myanmar Thingyan usually lasts for three to four daysfollowed by ‘Day One’ of the New Year. It is the mostendearing custom here to wash away the old year with coolrefreshing water, so one emerges clean as the New Year isushered in, to bring good fortune love, peace and joy toone and all. As I have said, Myanmar Thingyan is the mosthilarious, boisterous and enjoyable festival in which allcan freely participate, and there is no bar to colour, race orcreed, subject of course to good conduct, etiquette morality, patience and forgiveness, thus paying tribute to the uniqueand memorable occasion.

Verily Thingyan is a festival with socio-religiousovertones. For the elders it is time to introspect, and takestock of events of the outgoing year. The three or four daysof Thingyan are meritoriously spent by visiting themonasteries, by giving charity and by practisingmeditation. The courteous and respectable act, in goodtradition is to sprinkle Thanakha scented water, put in asilver bowl with Eugenia leaves, harbinger ofauspiciousness. But for the young and vivacious it is adifferent story. It is virtually a three-day carnival ofunbridled spree: dancing, singing, joking, water-throwing(many times sadistically) and matchmaking as theThingyan bug takes hold. Every year pandals are built fordancing, singing, and water throwing. Motorised floatsare created with conceivable ingenuity, for the revellers tomove from pandal to pandal. Every pandal or float ismanned by a bevy of comely damsels and boisterousyouths, who sing and dance to the lively Thingyan songsto the accompanying music, both modern and classical.

Oh my sprightly smiling sisterMay I say that you are bornFrom the same mother as Myoma.Smoothing your bouffant locksHow chic you lookIf I may truly say soColourful is your dressColourful is your dressComparable to the rising new moon;Or to a single blossoming flower.By your simple grace and glamourMyoma is enraptured. When the sun’s rays cast shadows overSerene Mya Nandar Lake;Let us seek refuge, my youthful lassUnder the shade of Mandalay Hill. How magnificent is the scenery; In this auspicious Thingyan eve‘Tis indeed a good omen’Slim, shapely, lithe and lovelyGlowing like flowers in full bloomHow beautiful you are, The one and only that I adoreYour Myoma float is now here,So welcome us with open arms,We all love you as own sisters. Are you hale and hearty, my dear ones?Oh, well and good.Come drench us with cool water,Hi.. we will also shower you too.The new year is now coming/Will you come with us, dear ones? You will never be idle or bored,But be merry all the more.Ye winsome damsels, withThe silver swan floating gracefullyWe, your brothers, here we come!Cho: Mya Nandar .......omen!

Nowhere is this Thingyan carnival more significant andheart-warming than in Mandalay, the capital city of theMyanmar kings, and now centre of Myanmar art and culture.Such intrinsic legacies of literature, fine arts, social mores, custom and traditions are still preserved and sustained tothis day, Mandalay Thingyan therefore manifests itself ashaving a distinct Anyar identity and style. When a decoratedfloat stops at the pandal, the whole troupe of sprightlydamsels come down from the pandal and dance around thefloat to the jaunty beat of music both from the float and fromthe pandal. When the singing and dancing are over, therecomes the throwing of water mingled with verbalinterchange. Then the float moves on to another pandal andthe scenario is repeated on and on for the three joyous days. The revelry is continued at night. The pandals are brightlylit. The girls present themselves in their best attire, and thedances and songs echo till the wee hours of the night. Thereis no water throwing at night and so the revellers as well asthe spectators can enjoy the spirit of Thingyan with all itsfinery, and ecstasy.

Most prominent among the floats is the Silver Swan, theinsignia of the Myoma musical troupe. It was founded bythe then prominent youths of Mandalay (Dahdan U Thant,U Aye Maung among many others), who were intent toinject fresh winds with emphasis on wind instruments andtraditional drums into slow moving classical renditions. Itwas a resounding success, so much so that mention ofMandalay, and Myoma troupe will not be complete withoutMyoma Nyein, the famous composer, himself a musician. He had created beautiful Thingyan songs, and many ofthem became eternal hits. A born genius, the words hegarlanded are simply ecstatic, tunes vibrant and scintillating, choreography mesmerizing.

One of his compositions: ‘Mya Nandar’ has now becomea Thingyan theme song. The scenario centres on the Myomatroupe and its Silver Swan float, the lovely Thingyan girls, the enchanting Mya Nandar lake and the Mandalay Hill, all beautifully interacting to create a hypnotizing effect. Sopopular is Mya Nandar that it has stretched its musicalwings not only to the four corners of Myanmar, but alsobeyond its borders. It will not be an overstatement if I saythat where there is a Myanmar anywhere in the world, youwill hear the melodic strains of Mya Nandar especially atThingyan. In fact the true title is ‘Mann Taung Yeik Kho’meaning ‘seeking refuge in the shade of Mandalay Hill’,but it is more commonly known by the shorter and easilymemorisable ‘Mya Nandar’. Myoma Nyein, when alivewould scarce have imagined that his song would receivesuch global acclaim. He would be very pleased indeed.

Allow me, as complement the propitious Thingyan 2012,to present ‘Mya Nandar’ in the original Myanmar languageand a free translation in English to enable our esteemedfriends to join in the chorus, here in Myanmar or in theMyanmar communities around the globe.

Bolton blow chance toboost survival bid

LONDON, 6 May—Bolton Wanderers are in severe dangerof being relegated from the Premier League after blowing atwo-goal lead in a dramatic 2-2 draw against West BromwichAlbion on Sunday.

Owen Coyle’s side looked on course to climb out of thebottom three after Martin Petrov’s penalty was followed bya Billy Jones own goal to leave Wanderers firmly in control atthe Reebok Stadium.

But Chris Brunt reduced the deficit with 15 minutesremaining and James Morrison netted a stoppage-timeequaliser.

To make matters worse for Coyle’s men, news soonfiltered through from west London that relegation rivalsQueens Park Rangers had beaten Stoke City with a late goal.

That agonising combination of results leaves Bolton twopoints adrift of safety with a trip to Stoke to come on the finalweekend of the season next Sunday.

There is still hope for Bolton, however. If they win at theBritannia Stadium, then a QPR loss at Manchester City or two

SCIENCE DAILY, 6 May—The atmosphere of Mars is lessthan 1 percent the density of Earth’s. It’s one of the reasonsliquid water covers much of our planet but cannot exist onthe Red Planet. As more research points toward the possibilityof water on early Mars, scientists have increased their studieson the density of its atmosphere billions of years ago. It’s notan easy task. In fact, it’s very difficult to even determineEarth’s atmospheric pressure from the same time frame.

Ancient volcanic blast provides moreevidence of water on early Mars

Georgia TechAssistant Professor JosefDufek is attempting tolearn more about the pastatmospheric conditionsby analyzing two unli-kely sources: ancientvolcanic eruptions andsurface observations bythe Mars rover Spirit. Hisnew findings, published by the

journal Geophy-sical Research Letters, provide moreevidence that early Mars was saturated with water and that itsatmosphere was considerably thicker, at least 20 times moredense, than it is today.

“Atmospheric pressure has likely played a role indeveloping almost all Mars’ surface features,” said Dufek, aninstructor in the School Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.“The planet’s climate, the physical state of water on itssurface and the potential for life are all influenced byatmospheric conditions.”

Dufek’s first research tool was a rock fragmentpropelled into the Martian atmosphere during a volcaniceruption roughly 3.5 billion years ago. The deposit landedin the volcanic sediment, created a divot (or bomb sag),eventually solidified and remains in the same locationtoday. Dufek’s next tool was the Mars rover. In 2007,Spirit landed at that site, known as Home Plate, and tooka closer look at the imbedded fragment. Dufek and hiscollaborators at the University of California-Berkeleyreceived enough data to determine the size, depth andshape of the bomb sag.—Internet
