Rocks in Canada gives clues to deep EarthREGINA, 16 Jan—Scientists say an

area of exposed rock in northwestSaskatchewan is a window into theformation of the Earth’s crust billions ofyears ago.

The area, dubbed the Athabascagranulite terrane, is exciting geologistswho say they would have to somehowtransport themselves 25 miles below theplanet’s surface to see features they canobserve underfoot while strolling aroundhundreds of acres of rocky outcrop,Postmedia News reported this week.

The formation was created when avast amount of molten rock was thrust upfrom the Earth’s lower crust beforesolidifying at the surface 2 billion yearsago.

While similar features exist aroundthe world, none are as expansive or

varied in the clues they offer into theplanet’s hidden depths, scientists say.

“We do not have the technology todrill anywhere near to the lower crust,”Michael Williams, a geoscientist at theUniversity of Massachusetts, says.

“But in northern Saskatchewan, wecan walk around on lower crust, mappingand sampling. Even if we could drill thatdeep, we would only get a small roundcore of rock to look at. In Saskatchewan,we have acres of exposure.”—Internet

Extra shuttle mission this year in doubtCAPE CANAVERAL, 16 Jan—Delays

in the space shuttle Discovery’s missionfor repairs to its fuel tank raise doubtsabout an extra shuttle mission this year,US officials say.

Two more shuttle trips were plannedbefore the aging three-orbiter fleet wasto be retired when a third, final missionwas approved by Congress last year in aNASA authorization bill signed byPresident Barack Obama, SPACE comreported.

But funding for the measure has notbeen appropriated as the countryoperates under a continuing resolution, freezing NASA at 2010 funding levelsuntil Congress can agree on a formalbudget.

Sen Bill Nelson, D-Fla, said the issueswith Discovery’s fuel tank and its ongoingrepairs don’t bode well for the extramission.

“If worst came to worst and they feltlike this tank was not safe, they wouldstand down and at that point would onlyfly two more shuttle flights instead of thethree that are authorized,” Nelson said.

Overfishing blamed for ocean reef lossSANTA CRUZ, 16 Jan—Overfishing

of reefs leads to explosions in populationsof sea urchins, which destroy coral algaethat build tropical reef systems, USresearchers say.

An 18-year study of Kenya’s coralreefs by the Wildlife ConservationSociety and the University of Californiaat Santa Cruz has found in contrast, reefsystems closed to fishing have fewersea urchins because predatory fish keepthem under control, with resulting highercoral growth rates and more structure, aWCS release said Friday.

Large numbers of grazing sea urchinsreduced the abundance of crustosecoralline algae, a species of algae thatproduce calcium carbonate, the basic

building material of ocean reefs, researchers found.

“These under-appreciated corallinealgae are known to bind and stabilizereef skeletons and sand as well asenhance the recruitment of small coralsby providing a place for their larvae tosettle,” WCS Senior Conservationist TimMcClanahan says. “This study illustratesthe cascading effects of predator loss ona reef system and the importance ofmaintaining fish populations for coralhealth.”

The study shows improving themanagement of tropical fisheries canhelp reefs to grow and persist in achanging climate, researchers say.

LONDON, 16 Jan—E-ink isn’t just for reading anymore.Scientists with BAE Systems are developing technologythat would use electronic ink to camouflage tanks.

According to a report in The Telegraph, high-techsensors would be fixed to the body of the tank that wouldmirror the vehicle’s surroundings, making it essentiallyinvisible.

“Highly sophisticated electronic sensors attachedto the tank’s hull will project images of the surroundingenvironment back onto the outside of the vehicle enablingit to merge into the landscape and evade attack,” wroteSean Rayment, The Telegraph’s defencecorrespondent. “The electronic camouflage will enablethe vehicle to blend into the surrounding countryside inmuch the same way that a squid uses ink to help as adisguise.”

Traditional personal camouflage is limited in itsfunction because it lacks versatility; it can’t just changecolours or forms. But personal camouflage has evolvedsince it was first used in the 19th century.

Toyota may shift to foreignproduction

TOKYO, 16 Jan—Toyota Motor willconsider shifting factories overseas ifthe yen stays high and puts pressure onits profits, the company president said.

“We do not wish to relocateproduction sites because of currenciesand foreign exchange alone,” AkioToyoda said in a Japanese-languageonline message dated Friday.

However, he added, “if profitscannot be generated” despite effortstowards efficient, good-qualitymanufacturing and training, “we haveno choice but to consider relocation ofproduction sites as a real possibility.”

The company plans to release afresh medium-term business plan inApril, he added.

Japanese exporters, led byautomakers and electronics producers, have come under pressure from therising yen in recent months.

A strong yen makes Japaneseexports relatively more expensive inforeign markets, while shrinking thevalue of Japanese firms’ overseasearnings when repatriated.

Meanwhile, Japanese automakershave been shifting more of theirproduction and sales overseas —particularly to growing Asian markets— as younger Japanese motorists avoidcar purchases due to the high costs offuel, maintenance and tax.

NEW YORK, 16 Jan—General Motors is expandingan earlier recall of some 2011 model-year trucks andSUVs to fix a problem that could cause the vehicles’rear axles to lock.

The recall, originally announced in December, now covers 26,751 Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMCtrucks and SUVs. The models affected are: CadillacEscalade, Escalade ESV, Cadillac EXT, ChevroletAvalanche, Colorado, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe;and GMC Canyon, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.

GM said rear-axle cross pins, used to hold the axlein place, weren’t properly heat-treated and may not bedurable. They can fracture, interfere with the axle andcause it to lock. The driver could then lose control ofthe vehicle.

One customer has reported a loss of power to theaxle, GM says. But no crashes have been reported.

GM says owners of the vehicles are beingcontacted and urged against driving the trucks until theaxle pin is replaced.

Good news forrubber…

(from page 1)Last year, latest tech-

nology was applied forquality improvement ofraw rubber. With the useof Hevea chemical pow-der, the crumb rubber isnow test-running.

Officials concerneddemonstrated a test oncoagulation of rubber la-tex with the use of somepieces of rubber latexcrystal mixed with wa-ter within a few minutesat rubber farms in Monand Kayin States andBago Region. The test

could attract local rubberentrepreneurs and grow-ers.

Regularly, rubber la-tex is coagulated withacid. Acid caused sideeffects to workers anddamaged soil and naturalenvironments. Some-times, fire broke out atthe workshops in proc-ess of crumb rubber.

Using 100 grams ofHevea chemical powdermixed with one litre ofwater has no side effect. In addition, the latestmethod guarantees the

safety for users, contrib-utes to better quality ofrubber and conserves en-vironments. I have learntthat due to proper eco-nomic potential, local rub-ber growers and entrepre-neurs set sight on use ofHevea chemical power.

Likewise, the dem-onstration on use ofHevea TPD spray is pre-sented to the users. Thespray is used in ASEANcountries by spraying therubber plants that haveno seepage of rubberlatex and the plants thatcannot seep out the latexcent per cent.

The demonstrations

on use of latest methodswill be presented in ShanState (North) and Myeikand Dawei of TaninthayiRegion.

Applying the latesttechnology on produc-tion of rubber will im-prove quality ofMyanma rubber rawmaterials in the future.

As a result, Myanmarubber can directly ex-port to the world marketby fetching currentprices and extend newmarkets in the near fu-ture.

BEIJING, 16 Jan—China State ShipbuildingCorporation (CSSC) signed a contract with ExxonMobil and Mitsui & Co, Ltd on Saturday to build fourLNG ships (liquefied natural gas), the nation’s firstoverseas order for such an advanced carrier.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co, Ltd, asubsidiary of CSSC, will build the ships for Mitsui, aJapanese shipping giant.

The ships are scheduled for delivery between 2015and 2016. The fleet will be used for shipping China’simports of liquefied natural gas from Australia andPapua New Guinea.

How to combat test anxietyCHICAGO, 16 Jan—A US expert on “choking under

pressure” advises anxious test-takers to write abouttheir worries before taking an exam.

Senior author Sian Beilock of the University ofChicago says students prone to test anxiety who wroteout what caused their fears ahead of a “high-stakestest” improved scores by nearly one grade point.

“We reasoned that if worries lead to poor testperformance and writing helps regulate these worries, then giving students the opportunity to express theirthoughts and feelings about an impending examinationwould enhance test performance,” Beilock says in astatement.

The study published in the journal Science foundexam-takers known to choke under pressure showeda 12 percent accuracy drop from pre-stress testing topost-stress choking under pressure testing.

However, students under the same stress butallowed to write about their anxieties experiencedimproved test scores.

“Despite the fact that people are often motivatedto perform their best, the pressure-filled situations inwhich important tests, presentations and matches occurcan cause people to perform below their ability levelinstead,” Beilock says.

Europe meets under pressureto boost crisis fund

BRUSSELS, 16 Jan—Eurozone finance ministershead into a meeting Monday under pressure toramp up the firepower of a debt rescue fund evenafter markets backed off pressure on vulnerablenations.

Europeans are divided over how quickly theyneed to act and how much added muscle theyshould give to the financial safety net that wascreated last year to provide cover to weak countries, following a huge bailout of Greece.

European Commission president, Jose ManuelBarroso, who heads the European Union’s executivearm, urged leaders to take a decision by their nextsummit on 4 February to appease markets nervousabout the fate of Portugal and Spain.

The EU’s rescue mechanism was used to pullIreland from the abyss last November after abanking disaster, but analysts have repeatedlywarned it would be too small to rescue Spain if itever needs a bailout.

Belgian Finance Minister Didier Reynderscalled this week for the safety net to be doubled to1.5 trillion euros ($2 trillion) and said he hoped toraise the issue at the eurozone ministers’ monthlymeeting in Brussels.

“I think that doubling the resources would be areasonable objective,” Reynders told AFP in atelephone interview.

But German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble, whose country has the biggest committment in theEuropean Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), themain component in the rescue mechanism, said adebate on increasing the size of the pot was “notrealistic.”—Internet

2011 ‘year of rockets’ for Europe

The new Vega launcher will be thesmallest of the three rockets.

INTERNET

PARIS, 16 Jan—Twenty-eleven will bethe “year of launchers”, says EuropeanSpace Agency director-general Jean-Jacques Dordain. Europe expects to havethree different rockets operating from its

French Guiana spaceport in the comingmonths. The workhorse Ariane 5 will bejoined by the Russian Soyuz vehicle anda new small launcher called Vega. At hisannual Paris press conference to previewthe year ahead, Mr Dordain said this rep-resented a major change in the way Esaconducted its space activities.

And he told the BBC everyone mightbe surprised at how complex an under-taking this would be. “For 30 years wehave exploited one launcher, the bestlauncher in the world, Ariane — but it wasone launcher,” he explained.”From thisyear, we will exploit three launchers inparallel — Ariane, Soyuz and Vega. It willintroduce some constraints because thetraffic will be much heavier from [thespaceport], and I’m not so sure we’ve yettotally understood the constraints whichare linked to the exploitation of threelaunchers instead of one.” —Internet
