Newsletter of The Tahoe Rim Trail Association

Welcome to Summer 2015. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is bursting with events and opportunities to help sustain the trail, learn wilderness skills and experience this Trail like no other.

    Be HereNow

Whether its making memories of a lifetime by volunteering or just finding a spot to take it all in . . .

  • T he excitement to get out on the trail is palpable. Personally I am thrilled by the prospect of our upcoming trail season for many reasons. My top motivator is that I have a brand new knee that will allow me to get back out on our trail like no other. I have so missed the days working on the trail or hiking all day with one of our groups while basking in the beauty that surrounds me each step of the way.

Id like to offer a huge thank you to all our sawyers, crew leaders and volunteers who continue to keep the trail in such great shape for everyone to enjoy. Weve planned a busy 2015 season with plenty of trail projects, backcountry camps, guided hikes, youth backcountry camps and lots more! There is definitely something for everyone I hope you will join us!

One way to get out on the trail is to take the Challenge! We are now in our third year of the Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge with all new premier hikes just for Trail Challenge Members. Whether you sign up as an individual, family or as a company team this program will get you moving and enjoying some of the best our trail has to offer. We are excited by the number of new corporate sponsors who have taken the challenge to provide their employees an exciting workplace wellness program. I hope you will join in the fun and keep an eye out for McLeod the Marmots appearances out on the trail all summer.

Program highlights: We still have room on our September Thru Hike for the adventurous souls whod like to complete the whole trail with the support of our wonderful trail angels and expert guides. Or for the younger set, we are offering two open

enrollment Youth Backcountry Camps in partnership with the City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Institute for Natural Science. If you know someone between the ages 12-17 hankering for an experience theyll never forget sign them up!

Mark your calendars now for our Annual Celebration to be held on Tuesday, October 20th at the Nevada Museum of Art. This event coincides with the Museums special art exhibit showcasing the beauty of Lake Tahoe. Join us for an extraordinary evening with friends and enjoy a brief recap of the years accomplishments, hors doeuvres, silent auction, and

exclusive access to the exhibits. We are accepting nominations for our 2015 Hall of Fame. Please help us honor those volunteers and partners who have been such a huge part of our success. Nomination forms can be found on our website.

Finally, Id like to welcome three new board members: Ande Chern, Jim Crompton and Carl Woods. They each bring a variety of skills and a wealth of experience to our organization. Well, Im ready to get back to truly living and looking forward to seeing each of you out enjoying our beautiful trail!

TRAIL BLAZER | Summer 2015 | Tahoe Rim Trail Association 3

E ach year presents the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and the Trail with new challenges: updating our website, moving offices, initiating a new connector trail project, etc. As we head into our fourth year of drought in the Tahoe Basin, new challenges emerge. More people are using the trail as they head to Tahoe for its cool clear waters, our plant and animal communities from the tiny pika to the massive sugar pine are stressed after four years of incredibly dry conditions, wildfires threaten to close sections of the trail, and seasonal water sources will once again run dry shockingly early in the season. With all of these factors at play, it is more important than ever that we all do our part to steward the trail. Please consider carpooling and utilizing Tahoes public transit system when available to allow more room at trailheads. There is new information on our website about how to access trailheads via public transit. Make sure to properly dispose of your and your pets waste, stay on designated trails, be extremely cautious utilizing camp stoves, check the USFSs fire restrictions for smoking restrictions, properly store your food to avoid attracting critters large and small, and spend extra time planning your water refill locations on the TRT if you are endeavoring on a longer hike or ride.

Before you head out on the trail this summer, make sure to learn or refresh on the seven Leave No Trace Principles which will include helpful details to reduce your impact. If you are new to trails or backpacking please consider attending the TRTAs public hikes or Backpacking 101

for more details about how to responsibly recreate! For our part we will be out stewarding the trail all summer long. Project priorities for this summer include maintenance work on the Van Sickle Trail in June, tread repair on the TRT near Snow Valley Peak in July and August, backcountry trail work camps near Armstrong Pass, and other various maintenance projects around the Tahoe Basin in September and October. We hope you will consider joining us this summer to build and maintain the Tahoe Rim Trail. Help us protect this incredible resource in Tahoes backyard! Volunteer workdays are held most Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from June 6th through October 15th. For more information or to register visit our website.

T he snow may be melting more quickly than usual thanks to our summer of a winter, so its not hard to imagine the thrill of reaching a break in the trees where the sun and the Lake burst through to greet you. With summer upon us, its time to replace the laces on the hiking boots, shake out the earth tone pants, resupply our day packs with sunscreen and remove the mystery snack that may or may not be in the top zippered compartment from last season. Whether you choose to join us for our Segment Hike Program, Public Guided Hikes, Backpacking 101, or either of our Thru Hikes, the trail is calling and we cant wait to kick off our summer hiking season plodding on for miles and miles with you!

The TRTA in partnership with the City of South Lake Tahoe is excited to offer five 3-day, 2-night Youth Backcountry Camps to engage youth between the ages of 12 to 17 this coming summer. Camp participants build character and are challenged to grow as an individual by tackling new outdoor experiences such as navigating with a map and compass, cooking in the backcountry, and working as a team to get their group to various camp locations under the direction of the TRTAs trained field staff. The TRTA and City of South Lake Tahoe are hosting three camps for local community groups including the Presidio Community YMCA and Boys and Girls Clubs. In addition, the following two camps have open enrollment for the youth in your life:

SESSION 3 YBCC - Tahoe Backcountry July 12-14; ages 15-17 Open Online Registration - $295

SESSION 5 YBCC - Tahoe Trackers with the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) August 1-3; ages 12-14Open Online Registration - $295

O ur 2,100 members all mean something different to us at the Tahoe Rim Trail Association! In this edition of the Trail Blazer Id like to introduce you to one of our TRTA family members who embody what it means to steward the trail with their passion to preserve the legacy of trails for future generations.

Meet the Phorest Family- John, Angela, Alyssa and Samantha! We had the pleasure of meeting this young and vibrant family in 2014 when they took on the 2014 Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge. Hiking and the outdoors has always played an important role in their family. Ever since their girls were toddlers, John and Angela have made it a priority to expose Alyssa and Samantha to the great outdoors. Since then, theyve been instilling the values of stewardship in their girls and its paying off!

One way in which Samantha and Alyssa have learned the values of stewardship is through their involvement with the National Parks Junior Ranger Program. Each year, the Phorests visit a different National Park and the girls complete a host of activities which teach them about their natural surroundings and how they can protect and preserve these special places. To date, theyve completed over 100 Junior Ranger Parks programs. As a result, the girls have begun to take ownership of the places they visit; especially the Tahoe Rim Trail. This year, Samantha and Alyssa have decided to become TRTA Ambassadors along with John and Angela. Together they will make their way around the Tahoe Rim Trail sharing the importance of Leave No Trace Wilderness Ethics and assisting other trail users. When asked why trails and the outdoors mean so much to them the girls respond, We get to see cool things in the wilderness and were able to spend time with our family.

New Member Benefit! CALSTAR Air Ambulance Membership DiscountWe hope you never need it, but air ambulance insurance is a smart investment for those of us who spend time in the backcountry. Air ambulance services, should you require emergency medical transport, can be extremely expensive even with medical insurance. CALSTARs annual membership program guarantees that youll be covered for the cost of air medical services they provide. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association has created a group rate through CALSTAR giving our group members discounted CALSTAR membership rate of $35 which is a savings between $10-$15 each year.

For those interested in joining the TRTAs CALSTAR group please contact Shannon Skarritt, Director of Membership & Outreach at [email protected] or 775-298-4490.

  • Work DaysTuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from June 6th through October 15th the TRTAs volunteer trail crews will be out building and maintaining the Tahoe Rim Trail. Please consider giving back to the trail you love by joining their illustrious ranks and digging in to ensure the Tahoe Rim Trail remains a world class trail for future generations. Workdays are a great way to burn some calories, learn new skills, meet new people, and experience new places on the TRT. No experience is necessary!

Information on project locations and registration is available at www.tahoerimtrail.org.

Backcountry CampsCamp out with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association! Summer on the Tahoe Rim Trail would not be complete without our world famous Backcountry Trail Camps. Tahoe Rim Trail Legacy Circle Informational MeetingPreserving the legacy of the Tahoe Rim Trail

The Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) is a special place for those who experience its rugged terrain and spectacular views that will have a lasting impact on their lives forever. One way in which you can help ensure the TRT is here for generations to come is by joining as a Tahoe Rim Trail Legacy Circle member by including the Tahoe Rim Trail Association in your will, estate or trust. Legacy Circle Members contribute to building new trail; maintaining the existing trail system; conducting volunteer trainings; offering outdoor education programs for youth; and providing for other ongoing needs of the organization.

Tahoe Rim Trail Legacy Circle members and individuals interested in learning more about the program are invited to join the TRTA on September 9, 2015 for an evening event at the Community Foundation of Western Nevada. Tracy Turner, PhD, Chief Philanthropy Officer will present on planned giving opportunities and answer any questions you may have about including the TRTA in your will or estate planning.

Drinks and light hors doeuvres will be served. Please RSVP to: Shannon SkarrittDirector of Membership & Outreach [email protected] 775-298-4490.

Bob and I have placed the Tahoe Rim Trail Association in our trust because this organization has proven over and over what good stewards they are for the Tahoe Rim Trail. The labor of love given from thousands of volunteers is evident on the trail. With ongoing financial and physical

support this trail will be here beyond our lifetime!

Lynda McDowell Former TRTA Executive Director and Tahoe Rim Trail Legacy Circle Member

Welcome JUSTINE LENTZ!The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is excited to welcome Justine Lentz to our team!
