The who’s who of SA’s thoroughbred racing industry glammed up for this year’s Thoroughbred Racing SA Industry Awards at the Stamford Grand Adelaide in Glenelg on Saturday, August 24. The dinner event was

an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and high performers of the 2012/2013 racing season and induct two more horses into the Thoroughbred Racing SA Hall of Fame. Rising star Jamie Kah was a stand-out

performer, with the 17-year-old apprentice awarded the industry’s prestigious honour, the John Letts Medal – which recognises excellence in race riding and outstanding achievements at all race meetings throughout

the State. Ms Kah finished the night with five awards – she was also honoured with the prestigious Glennon-Johnson Award for South Australian Metropolitan Jockey of the Year as well as three awards for Apprentice

of the Year in the categories of Country, Metropolitan and State. Read our feature article in Jamie on page 16 and CLICK HERE for a full list of award winners. Social photos from the event can be seen on page 29.

The CARLTON DRAUGHT MURRAY BRIDGE GOLD CUP always provides a fantastic day of quality racing, fashion and social or corporate entertainment. This year the Gold Cup is preceded by the annual Murray Bridge Racing Club Awards and the Gold Cup Calcutta on Sunday, October 13. The event will feature an appearance from one of the true gentlemen of the saddle – former jockey Peter ‘Hutchy’ Hutchinson. Peter, who is the English-born son of legendary jockey Ron Hutchinson, and a great rider in his own right, is this year’s National Jockeys Trust ambassador. He was in the elite bracket for most of his career but was forced into early retirement when he suffered a horrific leg break during trackwork at Caulfield on New Year’s Eve. Through National Jockeys Trust, Peter is spreading the word about the needs of former riders and their families, especially where such needs arise through serious injury, illness or death. The Gold Cup will feature something for everyone, with Fashion at The Races offering a range of great prizes on the day as well as the chance to a trip for two to Paris.

outh Australia is home to some of the world’s most well-known wine regions.

Many of the state’s most beautiful race courses are located in wine regions, so often great wine and races

go hand in hand. In fact, Penola and Strathalbyn even dedicate whole race days to the Vignerons (grape growers) in the region. If you’re heading to wine country, why not brush up on your wine knowledge

as well as the form guide. Here’s a quick cheat sheet so you know which wines are the hot favourites across different landscapes in SA and how to describe them.

Footbolt was a race horse. His winnings allowed the forefathers of McLaren Vale winery, d’Arenberg to purchase land for their winery more than 100 years ago. The Osborn family named a wine after their favourite stable fellow, The Footbolt Shiraz. In Coonawarra, two majestic bronze stallions rampantly greet visitors to the beautiful Rymill winery. These life size beasts feature prominently on the Rymill label and Rymill also has a price friendly ‘Yearling’ range. Wolf Blass is the bow tie wearing German who can be thanked for helping the Barossa Valley star on the world stage. His passion for wine is matched only by his passion for thoroughbred racing. With more than 350 winners against his record and Group One success with Grooming, Wolf is no stranger to the track. He regularly hosts wine lunches at the Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club.

USEFUL TERMS FOR DESCRIBING WINEWhen describing wine, wine merchants, restaurant servers, and your oenophile friends will use specific language to tell you about its characteristics. Knowing these words will help you understand the wine they’re describing:

• Aroma or bouquet: The smell of a wine — bouquet applies particularly to the aroma of older wines• Crisp: A wine with refreshing acidity• Dry: Not sweet

• Flavour intensity: How strong or weak a wine’s flavours are• Fruity: A wine that has aromas and flavours which suggest fruit; doesn’t imply sweetness• Oaky: A wine that has oak flavours (smoky, toasty)• Soft: A wine that has a smooth rather than crisp mouthfeel• Tannic: A red wine that is firm and leaves the mouth feeling dry

14|SPRING FITNESS

t’s the fitness regime so hot that countless celebrities and sports stars swear (or

sweat) by it.

Hot yoga—whether it’s Bikram or a fusion of methods—has become hugely popular across Australia and around the world in recent years.

Jennifer Aniston, Madonna, Andy Murray and David Beckham – along with local sporting heroes such as South Australian jockeys Clare Lindop and Krystal Bishop – are just some of the stars who include hot yoga as an integral part of their weekly fitness regime.

Those who are devoted to the practice say hot yoga has all kinds of benefits.

Some say the heat allows you to become suppler and go a little more deeply and safely into the postures. Many feel that working in heat helps the body relax, improves breathing (which helps conditions like asthma) and focuses the mind, which develops better mental concentration.

Some also say that working in a heated room elevates the heart rate, which makes the body work harder.

While this fact is debated, what does boost metabolism is working our muscles – so if you’re doing that in hot

yoga, or in any yoga at all, great!

The safety of hot yoga is something which has often been questioned because some believe the temperatures can cause dehydration and heat exhaustion or lead to muscle damage. However, studies have found the extreme heat is no more strenuous on the body than taking a class in a room with lower temperatures.

It can be hard for people to ignore the beads of sweat running down their body, but it’s important to remember that the body regulates its temperature, so there are generally no physical dangers of practising yoga

WHY SOME LIKE IT HOT: I

STRETCH INTO SPRING WITH HOT YOGA

“I PREFER TO EXERCISE INSTEAD OF SITTING IN A SAUNA, BUT I COMMONLY DEVELOP SHIN SPLINTS FROM ACTIVITIES LIKE RUNNING. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT YOGA – AND PARTICULARLY HOT YOGA – IS IT GETS YOUR HEART RATE GOING BUT IT’S NOT HIGH IMPACT.”

Page 15: TRQ spring 2013

WINTER 2013

SPRING FITNESS|15

in the heat – the roadblock is simply in your head. Whether you want to reduce stress, improve flexibility and balance or increase endurance and strength, there are certainly physical and mental benefits to be gained from taking part in any type of yoga class.

In the short term it’s likely you will sleep better, feel happier, be less injury prone and have more energy. In the long term, like with any form of regular exercise, you will generally see overall improved physical and mental health.

If you’re going to give hot yoga a try, remember to ensure you are well-hydrated before taking a class and always re-hydrate properly afterwards.

Like with “regular” yoga, hot yoga comes in all kinds of different styles. Here’s a snap shot of two of the more popular ones:

BARKAN: The Barkan Method is based upon the Hatha yoga tradition which is a fusion of movement with breath, postures and dynamic sequences which invigorate the whole body. It is built on many of the poses and philosophies of Bikram Choudhury and Bishnu Ghosh, but integrates postures from other styles of yoga to create much more variation and greater range of motion.

www.yogafusion.com.au

BIKRAM: Take a sequence of 26 therapeutic yoga postures, two breathing exercises, one large room heated to a balmy 37-40 degrees and you have Bikram’s hot yoga. The workout (commonly 90-minutes) is designed to work every part of the body – from massaging the internal organs, flushing out the cardiovascular system and stimulating the endocrine and nervous systems, to toning and stretching a range of ligaments and muscles in the body.

www.adelaideyoga.com.au

“I’M A HEAVIER JOCKEY AND BECAUSE WE RACE ALL YEAR ROUND I NEED TO ENSURE I FOLLOW A

STRICT ROUTINE TO KEEP MY WEIGHT DOWN.”

“SINCE STARTING HOT YOGA TWO YEARS

AGO MY STRENGTH AND BALANCE HAS

IMPROVED AND I ALSO FIND IT’S GREAT FOR RELAXATION – IT

HELPS ME FORGET ABOUT WORK AND ANY

OTHER ISSUES I MAY HAVE HAD THAT DAY.”

South Australian apprentice jockey Krystal Bishop.

SPRING 2013

JAMIE KAH|17

A BRILLIANT FINISH f you meet Jamie Kah, she’ll be smiling. And why not?

After her first full season in the saddle, and just 17-years-old, Jamie is the newly crowned SA Metropolitan Jockey of the Year, which makes her the first female apprentice to ever win a senior premiership on the Australian mainland.

She’s also been awarded the prestigious John Letts Medal as well as three awards for Apprentice of the Year in the categories of Country, Metropolitan and State.

In all she rode home 101 winners, at about a 15% success rate, capping it off with a brilliant treble at her last meeting of the season at Morphettville.

“Half way through the season I set a goal to get 100 winners and it was incredible to reach that,” she said.

“I’m very excited about the premiership, it hasn’t really hit me yet. It’s pretty cool.

“I had a rough spot around June when I didn’t have a winner for a while which was tough because I thought that was the end of my chances.”

But of course the wins returned and now she’s so busy she’s had to take on a manager.

“It does make things a lot easier,” she smiled, acknowledging the whirlwind she’s at the centre of.

It’s been an undeniably impressive debut, but no-one should think it’s just fallen into Jamie’s lap. There’s a lot of experience and sheer hard work behind her new success.

“I’ve always wanted to do something with horses,” she said. “I started riding as soon as I could walk and joined Pony Club very early.”

Pony Club wasn’t just for fun. It led to Jamie representing Australia at the International Mounted Games in England when she was 15.

Being so experienced with horses also gave Jamie an advantage when she started her apprenticeship – allowing her to get into ‘proper’ work earlier.

Despite always having a love of horses, Jamie didn’t know anything about racing until she started work with her neighbour – trainer John MacMillan – in 2011.

“A friend from Pony Club introduced me to John and I started doing stable work with him,” she said.

“A year later I started my apprenticeship and in April 2012 John gave me my first winner at Clare.

“Clare will always be my favourite racecourse.”

Like every other apprentice jockey Jamie has – and still is – putting in long hours of hard toil.

She is up before the sun rises six days a week, riding horses and working with trainers – trying to secure rides for upcoming meets.

“I’m lucky – I don’ have to work Sundays,” she laughed. “But it’s not like work – it’s doing what I love.”

It’s anything but the glamorous side of racing that most of us see, and

it’s a world away from what most other 17 years olds are doing.

Jamie went to Trinity College until Year 10 when she decided to take a very different course.

“I’m living a different world now. My school friends don’t really understand it.”

Jamie’s parents, who were both Olympic speed skaters, certainly do.

“Mum and dad have been very supportive,” she said.

“Before I got my driver’s licence they would drive me into work every day, and they now come to every race meet.”

Horses are even part of Jamie’s spare time.

On the rare occasions she’s not working she likes to “do something different” like ride her horses at home – often ‘Goober’ a two-year-old slightly-uncoordinated ex-racehorse – or go to a showjumping competition.

Of course, horses will be very much a part of Jamie’s future.

“It’s every jockey’s dream to win the Melbourne Cup so hopefully one day that will come,” she said.

“I’d also like to travel overseas and ride in places like England and Singapore.”

While most other 17-year-olds are going to the movies, partying and studying, this young lady is celebrating success and planning for more of the same.

After just 18 months in the saddle, Jamie Kah is now a business – and it’s proving to be a winner.

MUSTER THE BLOKES

FOR A LONG WEEKEND IN THE MID-NORTH

So you’re heading to the mid-north – Jamestown in fact – for a day at the

races...

You know of the place but what you may not realise is how much there is to see – or that it’s also a great destination for a weekend away with the boys.

Perhaps it’s not exactly in the same vein as a boys’ weekend on the Gold Coast, but with its relaxed country setting and easy access to the Flinders Ranges and Clare Valley, Jamestown certainly has

plenty to offer. Here are some tips to help you schedule a testosterone-filled long weekend packed with outdoor activities.

JAMESTOWN CUP

The Jamestown Race Day – held on Saturday, October 5 – showcases country racing at its best. The six event picnic race meet offers strong fields and a relaxed atmosphere – with the first race usually programmed for just after 1pm.

The event will provide access to full TAB facilities on course including a local tote on the Jamestown

races. The Jamestown race meeting coincides with Epsom Day at Royal Randwick and Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington – ensuring highly competitive support programs for punters. Free return buses are available on race day from Jamestown hotels to the racecourse.

S

AUTUMN 2013

SPEED SHEAR

On Sunday, October 6 the town will host Shear Magic at the Jamestown Hotel. You can catch all of the action of the speed shearing competition at the Jamestown Hotel with heats kicking off at 3pm.

GOLF

Why not try for a hole in one at Jamestown’s 18-hole, par 70, golf course. This challenging and well-designed golf course is set in the scenic Bundaleer Forest Reserve. It has an Australian Course Rating of 67 and is 5,796 metres long. Green fee players are very welcome ($5 per person).

4WD TOURS

If you’re keen to head off the highway, just north of Jamestown in the Mannanarie Hills is an 18 km 4WD trail (rated intermediate). Allow an hour and a half to enjoy the scenery from the top of Mt Nadjuri (with amazing views of Jamestown, Caltowie and Gladstone).

BUSH WALKING OR MOUNTAIN BIKING IN BUNDALEER FOREST

Whether it’s cycling, walking hiking, golf or tennis, Jamestown is the place to be active.

With great climbs and breathtaking views, the Bundaleer Forest is becoming increasingly well known as a place to walk and cycle.

The 33km Bundaleer Trail loops from Jamestown to Bundaleer Forest, and onto the Mawson Trail, then returns via a Sugar Gum plantation at the north of the forest.

Or try the Mannanarie Cycle Trail which takes cyclists from the plains of the southern Flinders Ranges through the Mannanarie agricultural district to Mount Lock.

FOR A WEEKEND IN THE MID-NORTH

he Spring Racing Carnival is undoubtedly the highlight of the

Australian racing calendar. It’s a time when even those who pay little attention to horse racing want to be a part of it – and the country’s passion for thoroughbred racing reaches its pinnacle.

Flemington Racecourse is the home of the Carnival, but if you can’t make it to Flemington for the Carnival or the 2013 Melbourne Cup then the next best place to be is Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide. This year’s Spring Carnival officially kicks off in SA with a launch event on Thursday,

October 10 which will feature the iconic Emirates Melbourne Cup.

There are a host of events being held at Morphettville in spring, with racing and hospitality packages available from Caulfield Guineas Day on October 12 right through to the VRC Derby Day on November 2.

Morphettville will also be hosting the state’s biggest Melbourne Cup party on Tuesday, November 5 with a broad range of syndicated and private hospitality options on offer. The day will include fashion parades from Miss Gladys Sym Choon.

It’s also an automatic qualifying event

for Fashion at The Races so dress to impress for a place in the State Final!

Gates open at 9am and General Admission prices for adults are just $25. Children under 18 get in free. For bookings and more information contact the South Australian Jockey Club on 8295 0199.
