Troutbusters gather at Bennett Spring

The Troutbusters tradition began as a private fi shing trip that found-ers Jim Wallace and Chris Hell-man took each year with Wallace’s daughter, some of her friends, and her friends’ fathers. Over the years, the group grew as its original members invited new people to join in. Then in 2007, family friend Lt. Daniel P. Riordan died in combat in Iraq, and Troutbusters consequently morphed from a casual gathering to a fundraiser so that the Troutbusters could start a scholarship fund in Rior-dan’s name. Today Troutbusters is a 501c3 organization that, in addition to funding the Lt. Daniel P. Riordan Scholarship fund, benefi ts a variety of causes, including Project Healing Waters, Reel Recovery and Reeling and Healing.

According to organizer Jim Wallace, the Spring 2015 Troutbust

included between 110 and 115 adult participants, including some people from Kansas City, Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Addition-ally, Wallace said he was expecting approximately 18 to 20 children younger than 12.

“We’ve seen them grow up from little kids to bigger

kids,” Wallace stated. “It’s kind of fun.”

It isn’t just the children that Wallace sees coming back year after year: the

adults begin to recog-nize each other after a while, as

well.“They get to know each

other, and if you don’t know anybody, as soon as you come you’re friends with somebody. The vibe is just incredible,” Wallace said.

Dave Caravella is both a Trout-buster and a former Missouri co-ordinator for Reel Recovery, one of the programs that the Troutbusters help fund.

Fishing, food and friendship prevailed as about 115 people gathered for a weekend in mid-

May at Hidden Valley Outfitters for the Spring Troutbust, an event for fishermen and fisher-

women that raises money for several charities.

“It’s huge,” Caravella said of the Troutbusters’ support. “They usually donate anywhere from a third to a quarter of what has to be raised annually to be able to put on a retreat, and if you don’t raise the funds you can’t have a retreat.”

Caravella said that it initially cost $12,000 to $15,000 to hold a retreat, although that price is smaller now that Reel Recovery has moved to a new location.

He explained that Reel Recovery is a nonprofi t organization that takes men who have cancer on three-day, all-expenses-paid fi shing trips, which are coupled with facili-tated oncology counseling sessions.

“You certainly wouldn’t get a bunch of guys to go and talk about cancer for three days if you told them that was what it was about,

so, you know, we take them fi sh-ing and we go to some of the best places,” Caravella explained.

Reel Recovery has programs in 19 states and in New Zealand, Caravella said.

He added that several of the pro-grams that Troutbusters supports have personal signifi cance to him.

“It’s a lot like the other programs you’ll year about. Project Healing Waters does the same thing for disabled veterans, and Reeling and Healing does the same thing for women with cancer. So it’s a double whammy because I’m a cancer sur-vivor and I’m a disabled veteran.”

The other program that will ben-efi t from the Spring 2015 Troutbust is Reeling and Healing, an orga-nization that takes women with cancer on fi shing retreats.

Reeling and Healing Midwest Missouri Coordinator Patti Hum-mert said that Reeling and Healing is similar to Reel Reel recover in that it takes cancer patients and survi-vors on two-and-a-half day retreats.

“It’s really nice for the women to be able to share what they’re see-ing... And they’re learning a new sport, but their renewing their hopes and their dreams for the future and learning a new sport, like I said — something that they can do inde-pendent of anyone else,” Hummert said.

She added that fl y fi shing is also particularly good exercise for breast cancer survivors because casting the line requires them to gently stretch their chest muscles.

“I think more importantly, they’re outside, they’re in a beau-tiful environment, they have a weekend that’s totally for them, beautiful lodges, all their meals are catered,” Hummert stated. “They’re away from their family, they’re away from their own environment of ‘I need you to do this,’ and ‘Could you to run and take Suzie to the soccer game,’ and ‘By the way, we need groceries.’”

Like Caravella, Hummert said that Troutbusters’ contribution to her organization is a signifi cant help.

“It costs about $6,000 per retreat to have the women come for the two and a half days for the lodging and I have to raise all of the money to do (that),” she stated. “So it’s a huge benefi t to have them donate the money. In addition, I still have to raise some funds; they’re not able to fi nancially support me 100 percent, but they’re a major contributor.”

Troutbusters is also the spon-sor for Project Healing Waters, an organization that takes wounded veterans on fi shing trips.

Troutbuster Denny Krupinski, who is also a member of Project

Healing Wa-ters, said that Troutbusters is a community.

“This is like a small town or a large family; there isn’t anyone here that wouldn’t help you. If I had something wrong with my truck right now, someone would take me in. I mean, these people all work together,” he stated. “It’s just like a big family.”

Trout-busters sup-ports multiple causes, but for some of those who attend, the Troutbust is an end in itself.

Troutbusters Gavin Katherine Poppen of Webster Grove have been attending Troutbusts for the past fi ve years.

Gavin Poppen stated, “Kather-ine loves to come, the kids love to come, and it’s just kind of some-thing to do.”

Katherine Poppen added that Troutbusts represent a camping trip in which someone else plans all the meals.

“All we have to do is bring our kids, our camper and our clothes,” she said. “They do all of the cook-ing, cleaning — everything’s taken care of for us.”

The Poppens also said they love the people that they have met through Troutbusts, with Gavin Poppen likening the event to a fam-ily reunion.

Katherine Poppen stated, “These are the nicest, most caring people in the world that I’ve ever met, so we come every year to be with really, really, really kind people.”

Trout Talk staff report

Once a year, Bennett Spring State Park sets aside a day to make sure that the fi shing tradition gets passed on to the next generation.

Bennett Spring State Park held its annual Kids’ Free Fishing Day May 2 at the park. During that time, kids 15 years old and younger fi shed for free.

According to hatchery manager

Mike Mitchell, Kids’ Fishing day is intended to help young people develop an interest in fi shing.

He stated, “The goal of Kids’ Fishing Day is to get youth interest-ed and involved in a fi shing activity to show them how much fun it can be and to help them get hooked on the activity of fi shing.”

Pictured are some of the scenes from this year’s event.

INVADERSINVADERSfrom the deep!from the deep!

(Well, actually, from the shallows, (Well, actually, from the shallows, but we were going for drama)but we were going for drama)

Invasive crayfi sh are a serious problem in Missouri — and pre-vention is the key to solving it.Invasive crayfi sh (also called crawdads) dis-

place crayfi sh species naturally found in bodies of water (“native” species), introduce disease, hurt fi shing and harm aquatic ecosystems. Pre-venting introductions of invasive species to new locations is the best hope of controlling them.

The Missouri Department of Conservation has been educating anglers, bait-shop own-

ers and others for many years on the problems invasive crayfi sh cause and how to prevent new introductions. Bait-shops continue to sell cray-fi sh not naturally found in areas where they are being sold and used, and they continue to sell il-legal species of crayfi sh. Anglers and others con-tinue to buy live crayfi sh and then dump them in waters where they are not naturally found.

Crayfi sh are important, and no species is found statewide.

Of the 35 known species of crayfi sh in Mis-souri, eight are found nowhere else in the world. Missouri has greater numbers of crayfi sh per

area of water or “densities” than almost any-where else in the world. Each species of crayfi sh occurs only in certain areas of Missouri that provide for its special requirements. No species of crayfi sh is “native” to the entire state.

Crayfi sh play a vital role in water quality. They break down decaying material such as leaves, woody debris, grass and dead animals in streams and lakes, which help keep debris from clogging the water and which provides food for many other animals.

Crayfi sh also serve as prey for more than 200 species of insects, fi sh, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. They are the desired food for many popular game fi sh and the most important food for smallmouth bass and goggle-eye.

“Native” crayfi sh become invasive when moved into

new waters.Even crayfi sh naturally found

in an area of Missouri can become invasive if they are moved to new areas of the state where they are not naturally found. These invasive crayfi sh tend to unbalance aquatic food chains by rapidly overpopu-lating waters where they have been introduced.

Invasive crayfi sh spread disease, hurt fi shing and harm aquatic eco-systems.

Invasive crayfi sh out-compete crayfi sh naturally found in an area for food and habitat. Invasive cray-fi sh can also spread disease when moved to new areas where they are not naturally found. When inva-sive crayfi sh populations explode, they over-consume aquatic insects, snails and other food sources that native crayfi sh and game fi sh, such as trout, bass and catfi sh, depend on. Less food results in fewer and smaller game fi sh.

Population explosions of inva-sive crayfi sh also lead to the reduc-tion or elimination of aquatic plant beds. These important habitats support insects and smaller fi sh that are food for game fi sh. They also serve as spawning and nursery habitats for game fi sh such as bass and sunfi sh.

As a result, crayfi sh invasions hurt fi shing for Missouri’s million-plus anglers. Fishing in Missouri generates more than $2.1 billion dollars for state and local econo-mies.

Crayfi sh invasions are happen-ing in Missouri and in other states and countries.

MDC has documented more than two dozen crayfi sh invasions in the state. In all of them, the invad-ing species were naturally found in some part of Missouri.

Invasive crayfi sh have also caused serious problems in Arizo-na, California, Idaho, Iowa, Loui-siana, Maryland, Michigan, Min-nesota, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyo-ming, along with parts of Africa, Canada, Europe and in Japan.

Missouri’s new regulation is another step to prevent new inva-sions.

Regulations limit the sale, pur-chase and importation of other species of live crayfi sh in the state to human consumption, scientifi c research or as food for confi ned animals kept by approved enti-ties, such as research institutions, agencies or publicly owned zoos.

The regulation prohibits the im-portation, sale or purchase of other species of live crayfi sh in the state for all other uses, such as fi shing bait, pond stocking or as pets or pet food.

Other states also ban the sale, use or importation of live crayfi sh as bait to some degree. Those states include Arizona, Idaho, Maryland,

Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Missouri anglers may still catch and use live crayfi sh, but should not dump them.

Anglers may still harvest a maximum of 150 crayfi sh per day from Missouri waters and must be in possession of a valid fi shing license to do so. Anglers are strong-ly encouraged to fi sh with live crayfi sh only on the body of water where the crayfi sh were collected. Anglers should not release any live bait back into waters, including crayfi sh. The release to the wild of live crayfi sh or any other bait is a violation of The Wildlife Code of Missouri and can harm the very fi sh and bodies of water anglers care about.

Missouri’s commercialfi shers and CFM support the

regulation.MDC surveys of commercial fi sh-

ers showed that most (70 percent) of all 70 Missouri commercial fi sh-ers who use bait were either sup-portive of a regulation that would prohibit live crayfi sh bait sales and purchase, but still allow for anglers and commercial fi shermen to catch and use their own live crayfi sh bait. The Conservation Federation of Missouri also supports the MDC crayfi sh regulation.
