Sixdifferentbracketsarecurrentlyavailable for theTron40SMkII.MB4andMB5arethemanualbracketandFB4andFBH4istheautomaticbracket.FB6/FB5 isautomaticbracketwithcover.Themanualbracketcomeswithout thehydrostaticreleasemechanismandisusedtostorethebeaconinsidethewhe-elhouseorotherprotectedplaces.Theautomaticbracketismountedinafreespaceoutsidewherethebeaconcanbereleasedautomatically.
ThepurposeoftheTron40SMkIIistogiveaprimaryalarmtothesearchandrescueauthorities.TheEPIRBgivesanimmediatealarmwhenactivated,trans-mittingthe IDof theship indistress.CaremustbetakennottoactivatetheEPIRBunlessinanemergencysituation,insuchcasestheuserwillbeheldre-sponsible.Forperiodictestingatestfunctionisimplemented.DuringthetestcycletheEPIRBdoesaself-testonthetransmittersandonthebatterysta-tus.Noemergencysignalistransmittedduringtheself-test.ThebatteryoftheEPIRBwilllastforatleast48hoursfromactivationoftheEPIRB.
1.2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONTheCOSPAS/SARSATsystemwasintroducedin1982asaworldwidesearchandrescuesystemwiththehelpofsatellitescoveringtheearth’ssurface.Sincetheintroductionofthesystemmorethan27000personshavebeenrescuedbytheCOSPAS/SARSATsystem(2008).Currentlythesystemconsistsof5func-tionalsatellitesinapolarorbitconstellation,thesesatellitescovertheentireearth’ssurfaceandreceivetheemergencysignalfromthe406MHztransmit-terwithintheTron40SMkII,morepolarorbitingsatelliteswillbeavailableinthefuture,givingafasterlocationandrescuetime.
Inadditionseveralgeostationarysatellitesareequippedwitha406MHztran-sponder,thesesatellitesarenotabletolocatetheTron40SMkIIbutwillgiveanearlywarningtotherescueforces,minimisingthetimefromanemergencyoccurstilltherescueforcesareatthesite.
EachemergencyEPIRBinthesystemisprogrammedwithitsownuniquecode,thereforeitisvitalthattheshipsdatathatisgiventothedealeryouobtainedyourTron40SMkII,iscorrect.ItisalsoimportantthatyourEPIRBisregisteredinthedatabaseforeachcountry.Thisdatabaseisnormallylocatedinthesamecountrythattheshipisregistered.

WhentheTron40SMkII isactivated(manuallyorautomatically) ittransmitsonthefrequencies121.5MHzand406.037MHz.Ananaloguesignalisemittedon121.5MHzandadigitalsignalistransmittedon406.037MHz.AftertheTron40SMkIIisactivated,thenextpassingsatellitewilldetectthetransmittedsignalandrelayittoanantennaatagroundstation,calledanLUT.
WhentheEPIRBtransmits406message, it is receivedby loworbitsatellites(800) km) and if the position is between 70° north and 70° south, also bygeostationary satellites (36000 km). The low orbit satellites which are polarorbitingtypeswillstorethedistressmessageandforwardtonearestLUTwhenitpasses.ThisgivestheCOSPAS-SARSATsystematrulyglobalcoverage.
Once the signal is received by the LUT, it is processed for location and senttoaMissionControlCentre(MCC).TheMCCsortsthealertdataaccordingtogeographicsearchandrescueregionsanddistributestheinformationtotheappropriateRescueCo-ordinationCentre(RCC),orifoutsidethenationalse-archandrescuearea,totheappropriateMCCthatcoverstheareawherethedistresssignalwasdetected.TheRCCinturntakesthenecessaryactiontoini-tiatesearchandrescueactivities.
The International Cospas-Sarsat System ceased satellite processing of121.5/243MHzbeaconsfrom1February2009.Fromthatdateonly406MHzbeacons will be detected by the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system. This affectsall maritime beacons (EPIRBs), all aviation beacons (ELTs) and all personalbeacons(PLBs).121.5/243MHzisnowonlyusedforhoming.
1.2.2 DISTRESS LOCATION DETERMINATION Seefigure7.1.b
ThelocationofthedistresssignalisdeterminedbytakingmeasurementsofthedopplershiftoftheEPIRBfrequencywhenthesatellitefirstapproachandthenpasstheEPIRB.
Theactualfrequencyisheardatthetimeofclosestapproach(TCA).Knowingthepositionofthesatelliteandusingthereceiveddopplersignalinformation,

itispossibletodeterminethelocationoftheTron40SMkIIfromthesatelliteattheTCA.AttheLUT,actuallytwopositionsarecalculated.Oneistheactualposition(A)andtheotheristhemirrorimage(B)position.Asecondsatellitepassconfirmsthecorrectlocation(A).Withthe406systemtherealsolutioncanbedeterminedonthefirstpasswithareliabilityofnearly90%anddowntoanaccuracyoflessthan5km(3.1miles).
1.2.3 EPIRB REGISTRATIONNormallytheMCCwillcontactthevesselorthecontactpersonregisteredinashippingregisterand/oranEPIRBregister (Shipsowner, familymemberetc.)beforealerting theRCC.This is todetermine if thealarm fromtheEPIRB forsomereasonisafalsealarm,andanexpensiverescueoperationcanbeavo-ided.BecauseofthisitisimportantthattheshipsdataiscorrectintheshippingregisterorintheEPIRBdatabase.
Tron 40S MkII purchased in some countries will have a registration form at-tachedtoit,itisimportantthatthisregistrationformiscompletedbytheownerandreturnedtotheplacetheEPIRBwaspurchasedortotheaddressspecifiedontheregistrationform.
Othercountriesusethealreadyavailableshippingregistertoobtainthene-cessaryinformationforavesselindistress,inthesecountriestheshipisalrea-dyregisteredandnoregistrationformisnecessary,howeveritisvitalthatthecodingoftheTron40SMkIIiskeptuptodatewithdataontheship(nationality,callsign,etc.),tominimizethetimefromanalarmtothestartofthesearchandrescueoperation.ReprogrammingtheTron40SMkIIcanbedoneatauthori-zedJotronASagentsinmorethan180differentplacesthroughouttheworld.IfyouarearesidentoftheUnitedStates,youmustregisterthisbeaconwiththeNationalOceanicandAtmosphericAdministration(NOAA)usingtheregistra-tioncardincludedwiththeunit.Fillouttheformandsenditto:SARSATBeaconRegistry,NOAA-SARSAT,E/SP3,FB4,Room3320,5200AuthRoad,Suitland,MD20746-4304,VesselownersshalladviseNOAAinwritinguponchangeofvesselorEPIRBownership.TransferofEPIRBtoanothervessel,oranyotherchangeinregistrationinformation,NOAAwillprovideregistrantswithproofofregistrationandchangeofregistrationpostcards.

3 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
3.1 GENERALTheTron40SMkIIconsistsofupperandlowerhousemountedtogetherwithanequatorringwithgasketandlockingpin.
Tron40SMkIImaybesplitintothefollowingmainparts:1.EPIRBmodulewithantenna2.Batterymodule3.Equatorringwithgasket.
3.1.1 EPIRB MODULE WITH ANTENNATheEPIRBmoduleconsistsoftwoprintedcircuitboards,whicharemountedintheupperhousing:1.Themainboardwithmainswitch.2.Antennaboard(121.5/406MHz)withindicator/flashLED.
For automatic activation of the EPIRB module, put the Tron 40S MkII in theuprightpositionintothewater,andthetransmissionstartswhentheseawatercompletesthecircuitbetweenthetwoexternalelectrodes(seawatercontacts).
WhentheTron40SMkIIismountedintheautomaticreleasebracketmecha-nism,thereisasafetyswitchintheEPIRBmodule,areedcontactactivatedbyamagnetinthebracket,whichdisablestheseawatercontacts.
Ifthe40SMkIImountedintheautomaticreleasebracketissubmergedinwater,thehydrostaticreleasemechanismwillreleasetheTron40SMkIIatadepthof2-4meters.ThetransmissionwillstartwhenthecircuitbetweentheseawatercontactsisclosedandtheTron40SMkIIisoutofthebracket.
TheEPIRBmodulemaybemanuallyactivatedwiththemainswitch,andisthenindependent of seawater contacts. The EPIRB module will also operate whileplacedinthebracketwhenmanuallyactivated.
TheTron40SMkIImayeasilybereleasedfromthemountingbracketmanually.Themainswitchisalsolocatedonthemainboard.Thehousingismadeofpo-lycarbonate.

3.1.2 BATTERY MODULETheBatterymodulesuppliestheEPIRBmodulewith7.2VDCpowertokeeptheEPIRBtransmittersactivefor48hourswhenactivated,andfortestsequences.ThebatterymoduleconsistsoffourSAFTLSH14LLithium-Thionylchloride(Li-SOCL2)batteriesconnectedinseriesandisattachedinsidethelowerhouse.Thehousingismadeofpolycarbonate.Inthelowerpartofthehousingthereisonereedcontact,whichisactivatedbyamagnetinthereleasemechanism.This is the safety switch, which prevents the seawater contacts from activa-tingthebeaconwhileplacedinthemountingbracket.Thereisainternalbrassweight,whichgivesstabilitywhilefloating.
Theseawatercontactsarealsomountedinthebatterymodule,andarecon-nectedtotheelectronicunitviathebatteryconnector.
Thebatteriesaremountedinaplasticbatteryholder.
3.1.3 EQUATOR RING WITH GASKETThetwopartsofthehousingareheldtogetherbytheequatorring,andislockedwithaU-shapedboltofstainlesssteelandasplitpin.Betweenthetwohalvesofthehousingthereisagasketmadeofneoprene.

4 INSTALLATION
4.1 BRACKETSSixdifferentbracketsarecurrentlyavailable for theTron40SMkII.MB5andMB4 are the manual brackets. FB6, FB5, FB4 and FBH4 are the automaticbrackets.Themanualbracketscomewithoutthehydrostaticreleasemecha-nismandareusedtostorethebeaconinsidethewheelhouseorotherprotec-tedplaces.Theautomaticbracketsaremountedinafreespaceoutsidewherethebeaconcanbereleasedautomatically.MB5,FB6andFB5aredeliveredwithprotectivecover.
4.1.1 FLOAT FREE BRACKET FB6, FB5 AND FB4
WhentheTron40SMkIIismountedinthefloat-freebracket,FB6,FB5orFB4,itwilloperateasanautomaticfloatfreeunit.SincethereleaseoftheEPIRBwillbeautomaticitisimportanttomountthebracketinaplacewheretherearenoobstaclesthatcanendangertheautomaticreleaseoftheEPIRB.Thelocationwherethebracketismountedshouldbeashighaspossibleonthevessel,andwellprotectedfromenvironmentalconditionssuchasdirectsea-spray,chemi-cals,oil,exhaustandvibrations.Thelocationmustalsobeeasilyaccessiblefortestingandmaintenance.
4.1.2 FLOAT FREE BRACKET FBH4Seefigure7.8forinstallation.
ThefloatfreebracketFBH4mustbeconnectedtothefixedinstallation(230VAC,10A)throughthethermostatconnectionboxaccordingtotheconnectiondiagrambelow.

4.1.3 MANUAL BRACKET MB5 AND MB4WhentheTron40SMkIIismountedintheMB5orMB4bracket,itwilloperateasamanualunit.ThisbracketissimilartotheFB6,FB5andFB4bracketbutdoesnothavethehydrostaticreleasemechanism.Thisbracketistypicallyusedtostore the EPIRB inside the wheelhouse or other protected areas of the ship.When the Tron 40S MkII is mounted in the MB5 or MB4 bracket, it must bemanuallyremovedbeforeanyoperationcantakeplace,thereforethebracketshouldbemountedinaneasilyaccessibleplacewhereitcanberemovedinahurryincaseofanemergency.

Itisnotrecommendedtooperatethebeaconinsidealiferaftorunderacoverorcanopy.DoNOTtiethelanyardtotheshipindistress,asthiswillpreventtheunittofunctioningiftheshipsinks.

3.TransmissionwillcontinueuntiltheEPIRBisliftedoutofthewater,anddriedoff.ThetransmissioncanalsobestoppedbyplacingtheEPIRBinthebracket.

1. Push and hold switch in TEST position for 15 seconds.KeephandsandotherobjectsawayfromtheupperpartoftheEPIRB(awayfromtheantenna).

Whiletestingthe406MHztransmitteratestmessageistransmitted,thistestmessageiscodedwithaspecialsynchronisationcodeandwillnotbedetec-tedbytheCOSPAS/SARSATsatellites.ThepurposeofthistestmessageistocontroltheactualcodingoftheEPIRB.ThiscanbedonewiththeJotronAStestunitTronUniDECoranotherEPIRBtester.

6 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING
6.1 EPIRB MODULE / BATTERY MODULE
The EPIRB shall be tested and approved as required by SOLAS regulationIV/15.9.2ofSOLAS1974asamendedwith,inaccordancewithMSC/Circ.1039guidelines forshore-basedmaintenanceofSatelliteEPIRBswithin5years if:Passengerships(>12passengers)andcargoships(>300GT)engagedininter-nationalvoyages,shallperformShore-BasedMaintenance(SMB)asfollows:-LatestbythedateoftheEPIRBlabelwiththistext,orthebatterylabel, whicheverisfirst.-WhenthisEPIRBbecomesdueforSBMinaccordancewithnationalrequire-ments.
6.1.1 CHANGE OF BATTERY
IftheTron40SMkIIisthemainEPIRBonboardtheship,therulesofSBMapply,andthebatterymustbechangedatanSBMauthorizedworkshop.IftheTron40SMkIIisnotmandatoryEPIRBonboardtheship,authorizedper-sonnelcanchangethebatteryonboard.

Tochangethebattery,thelowerTron40SMkIIassemblyisreplacedwithanewone.ThebatterymoduleconsistsofthecompletelowerhalfoftheTron40SMkIIandistobereplacedevery5years.Themarkingonthebatterymoduleshowstheexpirydate.AnewbatterycomescompleteandiseasilyreplacedbyopeningtheequatorringbetweenthetopandbottomoftheEPIRB.Thebat-terymustbereplacediftheEPIRBisactivatedforanypurposeotherthantest.ReplacingthebatterymoduleshouldbedonebyaJotronASauthorisedSBMprovider.YourclosestJotronASagentwithTronSTATfacilitieshasbeenspeciallytrainedtoperformthenecessaryoperationandisalsoabletodoanextendedtestoftheEPIRB,ensuringthattheEPIRBoperateswithinthespecifications.1.RemovetheEPIRBfromitsbracket.2.Removetheequatorringbypressingitoutfromthehousing.3.SeparatethetwohalvesoftheEPIRBhousing.4.Unplugthe6-pinconnectorthatcomesfromthelowerEPIRBhousing.5.Ensurethatthenewbatterymoduleismarkedwithp/n83056andhasa

6.1.3 BATTERY DISPOSAL
Dispose in accordance with applicable regulations, which vary from coun-trytocountry.(Inmostcountries,thethrashingofusedbatteriesisforbiddenandtheend-usersareinvitedtodisposeofthemproperly,eventuallythroughnon-profitorganizations,mandatedby localgovernmentsororganizedonavoluntarybasisbyprofessionals).Lithiumbatteriesshouldhavetheirterminalsinsulatedpriortodisposal.
