Legend has it that after a 10 year siege, the city of Troy only fell when its citizens were tricked into allowing a huge wooden horse through the city gates - supposedly a gift from the departing and defeated Greek army. When night fell some 30 soldiers hidden in the horse overpowered the sentries and opened the main gates to the city, allowing in the Greek army, who had sailed back during the night, under the cover of darkness.

The tale of the Trojan horse is one of the most captivating stories in Greek mythology. Immortalized in the literary blockbusters of Homer and Virgil, it features some of the most famous faces in Greek legend, from Helen of Troy to Aphrodite and Achilles. To this day a ‘Trojan horse’ has become a byword for treachery and deception.

Since the 19th century discovery of the site of Troy in modern day Turkey, historians have searched tirelessly for evidence of a real Trojan war, Troy’s demise and the truth behind this world famous myth. Now, archaeological evidence is mounting that suggests a Trojan war did indeed happen. What’s more, the city’s defences were so impenetrable, that some historians are asking whether the Trojan horse could actually explain how the enemy got inside the walls. Did the ancient Greeks have the capacity to build such an extraordinary object? In this documentary, we will explore how discoveries of charred bones and arrowheads point toward a violent showdown around 1200 BC. We will expose the true scale of Troy’s defences and supplies, and examine the evidence that discounts theories of an earthquake or an extended siege weakening Troy’s defences. And we will explore the real possibility that a Trojan horse could have been used to take Troy. Working with historical engineer Prof. Stephen Ressler and using ancient records as our guide, we will rebuild a scientifically sound Trojan horse through stunning computer modelling, examining just how it might have tricked Troy into defeat.
