PEBBLE PUPS

Thanks to Richard Jaeger for providing agate slabs for the Pebble Pups Eleven Pups and a like number of adults

crawled on the floor fashioning ornaments for Christmas trees or windows or anywhere else one wants to put it It

always seems simple (and even easy) to me and each time I learn more about the challenge of directing others to

copy my project But the results this time were definitely superior and I hope each Pup and adult learned a useful and

usable technique In retrospect I always wish someone had captured some of the moments in photos I know I was

way too involved even wrapped up in the project

Ian Kirk finally received five long overdue badges he had completed Earth in Space Reaching Across Generations The

World in Miniature Gold Panning and Prospecting and Field Trips Hersquos very close now to picking up Rock Star Eve-

lynn Cannella also added another five badges to her collection Fossils Lapidary Arts Earth in Space Rocking on the

Computer and Maps And Emily Schneider and Michael Schneider received their Earth Processes badges CONGRATU-

LATIONS to each of you

January we will make one more visit to the Rock Cycle Each Pup is invited to bring a small (about the size of a walnut

will do) sample of a metamorphic rock a sedimentary rock and an igneous rock to attach to a chart we will generate

Anyone who desires to help is invited to join in We will be using markers crayons glue and anything else anyone

wants to deal with

--Julia Allande JRoA Coordinator

Display Case January 2020

Harvey Shellrsquos shark teeth were a kind of a hard act to follow but I think Paulino Allande did a nice job with his

ldquoTurquoise December Birthstonerdquo display A certain person we know even allowed as how for the first time ever he

actually wanted to break in to the display and make off with some of the pieces If any disappear we know where to

look

For this month one of our Pebble Pups Evelynn Cannella will be providing the display It is a little bit of a learn-as-

you-go type activity so until it is done I wonrsquot be able to say much about it

You can see that it does not take a lot of experience or expertise to put in a display Look at your collections I know

you have stuff to show off Grab an idea and go for it Call me

--Julia Allande

Turquoise (along with Zircon and Tanzanite) is the birthstone for

organization with responsibility for advancing the interests of earth science amateurs with legislatures and land use management agencies

The AFMS will receive a report from ALAA at its annual meeting

The AFMS endorses the principle of multiple uses of public lands as a guarantee of continuing recreational opportunities

Wilderness and monument designations are inconsistent with the principle of multiple uses In view of the vast amount of public land al-ready designated as wilderness and monuments future such designations should be minimal taking into account the increased demand for recreational opportunities including rockhounding created by a growing population

In furtherance of the principle of multiple use the AFMS believes that laws regulations and rules established by relevant govern-mental authorities should be designed to allow freest possible access to all public lands coupled with minimal restrictions on the recrea-tional collection of minerals fossils gemstone materials and other naturally occurring materials

A right to collect minerals and fossils on public lands should be protected by statute

December It is a blue to green (inclusive) opaque waxy stone It

belongs to the triclinic crystal system and has a Mohs hardness of

5-6 The chemical formula is CuAl₆(PO₄)₄(OH)₈middot4H₂O
