From Liz Thomas

The Tulsa Rock and Mineral

Club’s 32nd Show is coming up

this July 8th and 9th at the Exchange

Center, Tulsa Fairgrounds.

We cannot put this show on without the club members’ help as a whole. During the show we will be needing help in several

areas. Here is the list of areas that we need help and what you would be doing. Give Donna Loffer a call at 918-407-1194

or 918-371-5051.

Grab Bags – Sell grab bags, talk with customers. Restock bags on table when stock gets low.

Spinning Wheel – Take money for people to spin the wheel to win rock related items. Replace items on spinning wheel to

win.

Kids Zone – Sit, have fun with kids and tell them all about rocks.

Fluorescent – Help Julia with showing how plain rocks turn into a wonder of color.

Touch and Feel – Sit and answer any questions that may be asked about the rocks on the table. Rocks should not be picked

up.

Silent Auction – Help Larry with replacing rocks on the table to be auctioned off.

Door Prizes – Help Roberta with drawing numbers for door prizes.

Info Table – Sit and pass out information on the club and other rock related items.

Tickets – Sit and take tickets, pass out tickets for the door prizes and stamp hands for returning people. The Fairgrounds is

contracted to man the outside booth where people buy their tickets.

Load and unload truck – this is the hardest so we need people who can lift. Load the truck at the Allande’s on Thursday

evening to bring our cases and other supplies to the show. Follow the truck to the Fairgrounds and help unpack Friday

morning about 8 am. On Sunday evening, after the show, help load the truck back up at the show to go back to the

Allande’s and help unload at the Allande’s.

Friday set up – Put table covers on, put paper on the working exhibit tables and the silent auction table, put up signs and

anything else to help set it up. Help construct the club display cases.

Sunday tear down – Help deconstruct club display cases, clear the area. Load truck, unload at Allande’s.

PEBBLE PUPS

My sincerest apologies, guys, the project I’d hoped to pull together for the June meeting fell to little bits, so we

studied a very important and often overlooked part of Rockhounding—the Code of Ethics. Each Pup went away with

a copy of the Code of Ethics, and I hope our little discussion should have some lasting positive effects of the

future of rock hunting!

July is our show, and I hope the Pups take advantage of the displays and dealers at the show to advance their

knowledges of fluorescence and gold panning, to mention just those two. There will be ample opportunities for the

Pups to work during the show, adding more feathers to their caps (ie, hard hats!). At our meeting for July we will

review what treasures each discovered and what all we learned. I look forward to seeing you all there!

The Conglomerate

News from the Chatpile Wayne Mouser, [email protected]

David & Cathie Hogate entertained two young future rockhounds and shared rocks and fossils collected over several years. The two are homeschoolers studying Geology & Earth Science for the summer. The variety of specimens gave them a good start to rock identification. Their teacher/mom Christi has had an interest in rock collecting since she was a child and enjoyed learning the areas to find rose rocks, hourglass crystals & crinoids. Hopefully they had their interest sparked during their field trip. David was able to send Paisley, Isaac and Christi home with lots of specimens and even some Murfeesboro Diamond dirt to dig through. Paisley's favorite was the thunder eggs and Isaacs was the copalite (dinosaur poop) Much of Davids collection was gathered in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Oregon, Wisconsin & Oklahoma. Some specimens came from club members Ben & Liz Thomas, Wayne Mouser and Billy McBay.

David and Cathie Hogate with Paisley and Isaac, budding rockhounds.

Dayna Pacquette is planning a surprise birthday party for L. E. (Gene) Cockrell on Saturday, July 15,

2017. The party will be held at the Air & Space Museum from 5-8 pm. TRMS members are encouraged to attend.

May 24th, Lynn Nabb wrote that she had just returned from 37 days in Europe. 2 1/2 weeks in Alsace France area, 10 days in Bologna with a few days in Geneva,Venice and Paris. She bought some nice rocks at a market but then had to carry them back.

Jim Williams wrote: As of May 30th, there are two new specimens at the Elsing Museum. Ruth and I put two very unique specimens on "loan" to the museum. One, a selenite crystal cluster from down near Marlow that was collected on private land 60-70 years ago. The other is a barite crystal cluster from near Norman. I have never seen any specimens like these and when they became available for purchase, we decided to acquire them for everyone to enjoy.

Former member Richard Spees, 90, passed away June 1, 2017. He and his wife Marjorie who died in 2011 were long-time members of TRMS. Former member, Richard Dodrill is living at Westhaven Nursing Home in Room 405, 1215 S. Western Rd., Stillwater, OK 74074. Phone: 918-743-1140. I would imagine he would enjoy receiving a card or phone call from those who knew him.

Chester and Elaine Lee went with the OKC club on June 2 - 4th to the Hoot Owl Ranch near Black Mesa State Park in the far west end of the OK Panhandle. George Collins (4th generation owner of the ranch) led the group to several sites on the ranch.” We found red-bud agate, jasper, petrified wood, wood casts, agate and hematite nodules. Mr. Collins also took the group to some sandstone cliffs with some ancient drawings, several different Indian Tribal signs and pictures, all there on the ranch. We had a great time and brought home several nice rocks.”

SILVER SOLDER FROM SCRAP Bench Tips from Brad Smith

Sometimes you need a lot of silver solder to complete a piece the way

you want it to be. For me it was when I was trying to join several castings. But

silver solder is expensive, so I found a way to make my own from scrap with a

little help from a penny.

First step is finding out what’s in a solder. A search through the reference

books (Tim McCreight or Erhard Brepohl) or a Google search will turn up recipes

like:

* Hard - AG 80% CU 13% ZN 7%

* Medium - AG 70% CU 20% ZN 5%

* Easy - AG 63% CU 30% ZN 7%

The silver (AG) and the copper (CU) are easy to come by, but finding some zinc

(ZN) has always been my problem until I found out that our pennies in the USA

are almost all zinc. According to Wikipedia a US penny minted after 1982 weighs 2.5 grams and is 97.5% ZN and

2.5% CU.

So all I had to do is add a penny to some copper and a pile of silver scrap.

I chose to use Sterling scrap so I adjusted for the amount of copper in it as well as the amount of copper from the

penny. Here’s what I used for components of Medium solder:

* Sterling - 36.90 grams

* Copper - 9.35

* Penny - 2.50

Melt the silver and copper first in a melting dish, mix well with a carbon rod or titanium solder pick, add the zinc

(penny) last, mix again, and pour into a small mold. The zinc is added last because melting it causes some to

vaporize, and the fumes are a safety problem (They’re a gray-green color). Be sure to have good ventilation.

To check the solder’s melting temperature was correct (medium), I put a sample of the homemade solder on

a piece of copper sheet along with a known sample of hard, medium and easy solders. I then heated the plate

from the bottom and watched as the easy first melted, the medium melted, the homemade melted, and finally

the hard.

Additional notes on converting the ingot to sheet, strip or wire form - If you have access to a rolling mill, that will

be the fastest way to proceed. Either roll out the ingot into a sheet and cut strips or roll it out as wire if your mill

has the grooves. If you don’t have a mill, all you have to do is forge out the ingot into a rough sheet of the gauge

you’d like and then cut thin strips with bench shears. Be sure to anneal the sheet every so often as you forge it.

AFMS & RMFMS REVIEW

AFMS and RMFMS summaries prepared by Connie Cassity

American Federation of Mineralogical Societies Website: www.amfed.org June 2017 Newsletter

AFMS Safety Chair, Ellery Borow has tips for rock club safety chairs, field trip coordinator, and anyone discussing safety with club members t,o gain and keep members attention when presenting safety messages. “The use of attention drawing titles, humor, pounding a gavel first, or making messages personal (as in how the matter effects each member personally), all goodways.” More information is provided for club safety leaders.

Jim Brace-Thompson, AFMS Juniors Program Chair, explained that “ . . . we’ve distributed 3,980 membership patches and 11,923 activity badges since the program began—all entirely free—to clubs and their kids. This has all been possible thanks to the generosity of the AFMS and its Endowment Fund. Your tax-deductible donation will enable us to keep things like our Badge Program alive and well.

“M-44: Who, What, When and How” written by John Martin, AFMS Conservation and Legislation Committee Chair, presents information for rock hounds on safety while in the field. An M44 device uses a cyanide capsule to control coyotes, wild (feral) dogs, and red, gray, and arctic foxes which are: suspected of preying upon livestock, poultry, or federally designated threatened and endangered species. His advice is that the M44 devices should be avoided if found while rock hounding and keep all pets away from such devices that can be fatal for pets.
