“Serve Christ our Lord by welcoming, equipping & sending disciples”
To God’s family in Christ Jesus at Trinity, As we reach the half-way mark in our journey through Lent I pray that each of you has had the chance to be both challenged and encouraged on this pathway that takes us to the cross and then the empty tomb – the clearest statements of our sinful depravity and the boldest statements of God’s love for sinners and the life which that love brings through Jesus, his Son and the Lord and Saviour of our world. March is the month of spring. From the first games of baseball’s “spring training” in the first week of March, through the “springing forward” with daylight savings time on March 13, to the reality of the official start of “Spring” on March 20, the word spring can serve as a summary of March. The fact that Easter will occur in March this year only reaffirms for me the positive nature of the word spring. We often talk about someone who is happy or has received good news of some type or other as having a “spring in their step”. Even the phrase “to spring a surprise” is usually connected with doing something which will leave another with an unexpected pleasure – or at least playing a joke on someone whom we wish to please or at least playfully tease. There is definitely a spring in the Scriptural stories of Easter. The very fact of the resurrection is based on the “springing” forth of Jesus from death in the tomb to life. The women who come to anoint his body hurry to find the disciples with the news that he has risen – and John and Peter rush to the tomb to see if what Mary Magdalene has said could possibly be true: both share a sense of urgency which we can easily associate with a spring in their steps. When Jesus joins the disciples on the walk to Emmaus and shows
them that the death of their friend was the fulfillment of God’s plan to save sinners, they later remember the conversation as having put a spring in their hearts (“burned within us”) and their feet (“that very hour” they went back to tell the disciples in Jerusalem). This “springing” reflects God’s promises of the restoration to Israel (Isaiah 44:1-4, where God says that he will pour out his Spirit like rain on the offspring and descendants of the people and “they will spring up among the grass like willows by the watercourses”) and of righteousness for his people which will “spring forth before all people” Isaiah 61:11. Restored from captivity the people are reassured that “[t]ruth shall spring out of the ground and righteousness will look down from heaven” (Psalm 85:11). It may well be these words and others like them that are behind the statement Jesus makes to the woman at Jacob’s well (John 4:1-42) when he tells her that those who drink from that well will be thirsty again, “but whoever drinks of the water I will give them will never thirst again. The water that I will give them will become in them a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” This water, this gift of our Saviour, is the gift of Easter, the transition by faith in Jesus as Saviour that moves us from spiritual death to life, life that is eternal and that puts, as it were, a spring into our steps as we live out that gift here and forevermore in the future. Have a Happy Easter!

How To Be A Disciple
The journey through the season of Lent is the journey of following Jesus. From the earliest days of the church, the focus of the Lenten season has been on discipleship. These dramas offer the congregation some thought about what discipleship means, both for Lent and throughout the church year.
In a sense, the dramas are backward. They begin with an idea that discipleship is something we do, and finally conclude that it is something given by God. But in that sense, the Lent and Easter seasons are themselves backward, in that we do not fully understand the call without the gift, as we do not understand the cross without the empty tomb.

World Day of Prayer
Women’s World Day of Prayer is an international, ecumenical, prayer movement that invites women, from a different part of the world each year, to prepare a worship service through which their hopes and fears for their country may be brought before the whole world in prayer.
On Friday 4 March an estimated 3 million people in over 170 countries and islands will gather to observe the day of prayer, using an order of service written by Christian women in Cuba and translated into over 60 languages and 1000 dialects. In the British Isles alone over 6,000 services will be held.
The day begins as the sun rises over the island of Samoa and continues until it sets off the coast of American Samoa, some 35 hours later.
The theme ‘Receive children. Receive me’ reflects St Mark’s Gospel, chapter 10 verses 13-16, which is the focus of the service and a reminder that everyone is a child of God and equally worthy of our love and respect.
The Republic of Cuba is the largest Caribbean island, located at the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico and called ‘the Key to the Gulf’. Politically at odds with the USA, Cuba suffered greatly due to the economic embargo imposed upon it in 1960 but has found strength within itself to move on and overcome many of its problems.
This is not a day of prayer just for women - everyone is welcome to attend the service. Hosted by Trinity Lutheran Church, Friday, March 4th @ 7:00 pm
Guest Speaker: Maggie Theiss with fellowship & refreshments following the service. ______________________________________________

CARING FOR THOSE WHO ARE GRIEVING
Trinity Lutheran Church cares for not only the people within the walls of our church but also for the people of our community at large during all the seasons of life and sometimes the season is one of grief and sorrow.
During times of sorrow and grief, the caring ministry at Trinity provides comfort to family and friends by organizing refreshments after funerals. We currently have 4 funeral coordinators whose responsibility is to organize the details concerning food, food
preparations and workers for the funeral.
It is our prayer that we have more funeral coordinators. Please prayerfully consider helping out with this most valuable ministry. We have resources available to help with the obligations involved and would provide any assistance needed to help make the transition unstressed.
Pray about this call to ministry and feel free to talk to Pastor John, Maggie or any of our funeral coordinators; Faye Altwasser, Vi Olsen, Shirley Perry, Julie Musgrove. __________________________________________
If you have a concern you would like to have placed on our Prayer Chain please call the church office. Please notify the office also if your email address or telephone number has changed. ______________________________________________

The Library Corner Greetings! If you have had a chance to have a peek at the library, you will see that some changes are being made.
Most Notably, a beautiful new bookcase graces the seating area, made for us by the talented Earl Wilson, and we are very much appreciate have in the new space to expand into. This lovely bookcase now contains our non-fiction collection; Bibles and Bible studies, devotions, commentaries, concordances and so much more. The brand new Teen Collection is shelved in the left hand bookcase on the wall. These books for all ages of teens are topical and timely, and come to the library courtesy of the TLC Women’s Group. I am sure that every youth will find a great read here! Thank you so much ladies! There are always new books coming in and donations being made, so it’s always worthwhile popping in to see what’s new. One recent donation is a really worthwhile read; Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus. If you have been interested in the recent events of the day, with so many Muslims coming to Canada, I’m sure that this book will educate and inform you. It’s being used in the Tuesday evening study: Islam and Christianity, but as a clear testimonial to the rise of faith in Christ from the Authors own ingrained belief of Islam it is a glorious and powerful book! I highly recommend it! A final thanks again to everyone who has helped and advised me as I’ve been settling into this position. We are still in need of a volunteer to sign up for taking care of Trinity’s recycling needs for the year. The signup sheet is on the bulletin board across from the office. This is a monthly sign-up and March through December are still available. Please consider this opportunity to serve.
IDEAS NEEDED “Church Council has approved a suggestion that the two upper windows on the West Wall of the Church Hall have stained glass windows installed. Funds from our Memorial Donations will be used for this suggestion that came from our 50th Anniversary planning. Leona Ferguson and Carol Steidel are looking for anyone who is interested in contributing ideas or assisting with this project to become
part of a small working group. If you are interested please speak with Carol or Leona. Thank you.” __________________________________________________

“Serve Christ our Lord by welcoming, equipping & sending disciples”
From www.pauldazet.com used with permission When I was diagnosed with Cancer in 2008, I had so many people say to me, let me know if you need anything. These people were caring, compassionate Christ-followers who genuinely meant it when they said it. While there was a lot of things that we needed, from help with the kids, to runs to the grocery, we only let those closest to us, mostly family, lend a hand. To everyone else, we just replied, “thank you, we will”. But we didn't. I should have gave people the opportunity to be a blessing to us. But I didn't want to put them out. I didn't want to spend their valuable time doing menial tasks for us. There were better things that they could do with their time. I was wrong denying people the opportunity to bless us. But I’m not alone. Am I? In fact, to almost every person I say, let me know if you need anything, I never hear back from them. And as I observe this going on in the church, we all play the same game. No one actually replies with, “Yes, I need help with this.....” And to be honest, sometimes I say that phrase, hoping they don't ask me to do anything. But I say it, because that is what I am supposed to say. It is the courteous Christ like thing to say. Right? Wrong. When we look at Jesus, we don't see courtesy, we see action. In Mark Chapter 1, in what many people say was Jesus' longest day of ministry, it is recorded that Jesus met the needs of all those in the town. Mark 1:29-34 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. Jesus put his teaching into action, and demonstrated to us that our faith requires action. As James says, we need to be doers of the Word.
Saying “let me know if you need anything”, when we know someone needs something is just wrong. It makes us feel better about ourselves. We want people to know that we care, but caring isn't enough. If we follow in the footsteps of Jesus, we should do something. Send a card, make a meal, drop off some groceries, make a visit or a phone call. Do something! Back in 2008, we were blessed by many people who acted. Larry and Cindy got us a Nettflix subscription. Mike called and talked to me about World of Warcraft, and other geeky things, just to get my mind off of the treatments. Vicki, Sherry, Jeanne, and Adona did so much to help our family with the day-in, day-out things. Friends taking Stacy out for coffee so she could get some breathing room. People from the Church dropped off meals. Jon, Angie, Dave, and Betsy took us out to dinner and didn't act embarrassed by my bald-head, and my bloated face (see pic below). Jon writing a song for me rescue me. John and Sean came over on Sundays and turned me into a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. John watching every episode of Ultimate Fighter at my house every Wednesday during chemo. And there were so many more acts of kindness. Not solicited, just people acting out of love. I am grateful for all the people who did something. And the one that sticks out the most to me, as I look back on those days was the picnic in the front yard. On a Sunday that I couldn't be at church, the church showed up on my front yard and had a picnic. They just invaded. Not one person bothered us. No one knocked on the door. They just put out their blankets, and pulled out their food and ate. I'm not sure what the neighbors thought. But I remember what I thought - wow, these guys really love me. Now here is the thing. I still say, let me know if you need anything. I haven't learned and I feel awful about it. I should have had a picnic in someone else's front yard while they were having a hard time. But I haven't. I should have gone the extra mile for those in my flock. But I haven't. In this new year I propose a change. That phrase isn't good enough anymore. I can do better. We can do better. I am not going to say, “let me know if you need anything”, at all during this year. Anytime I feel the urge to say it, I'm going to pray about how I can do something to bless them. Who is with me?

As Trinity continues to look to the future to which God is calling us, our Board, together with the Worship Committee, will be evaluating all areas of our Worship ministry. Among other things, we will be charting how often we
make use of various musical resources, such as the piano, organ, guitars and any other instruments; how often we are using hymns and songs which require a song leader or someone to teach them in proportion to those which are more familiar; how to make the best use of the space we have at the front of the church (often referred to as the "chancel"); the frequency of Holy Communion; styles of worship and how to best offer a worship setting which draws people to participate in the worship as well as offering opportunities to clearly share and explain both Law and Gospel and how they apply to our lives; and the like. We invite your input, especially if you are able and willing to take the time to put a few thoughts "on paper" for discussion and evaluation by the Deacons. Our hope is to find the best ways to make use of the gifts and talents we have in the congregation and to determine what, if any, changes we might make to most faithfully offer God our worship and praise while proclaiming the crucified Christ as our Lord and Saviour. _____________________________________________

Trinity Times March 2016
“Serve Christ our Lord by welcoming, equipping & sending disciples”
Article from: stewardshipresources LCMS March 2016
Lent is a season of repentance. Repentance is turning
away from sin, while we turn toward God for the
forgiveness of sins. During Lent, we hear the Word of
God and consider our lives in light of it. We confess
our failures, and receive absolution, that is,
forgiveness, and then commit ourselves to do better.
What does God say about giving to the Church? The
Bible tells us. Our giving should be first fruits giving
(Genesis 4:4; Proverbs 3:9). Our giving should be
regular, on the first day of week, which has the Divine
Service in mind (1 Corinthians 6:1–2). Our giving
should be proportional: according to our income (1
Corinthians 16:1–2), according to what we have been
given (2 Corinthians 8:12; Luke 12:48), our giving
should be given with a spirit of eagerness and
enthusiasm (2 Corinthians 9:2), generosity and
liberality (2 Corinthians 8:20), cheerfully without
compulsion (2 Corinthians 9:7). Our giving should be
directed to those who teach us (Galatians 6:6–7)
because a laborer is worthy of his hire, and we all
know the going rate of such laborers in our
communities (Luke 10:7; 1 Timothy 5:18).
Now consider your own giving in light of the Bible’s
teaching. Are you giving of your first fruits, taking it
out of your paycheck first, or does God get what’s left
over? Are you giving voluntarily and cheerfully? Are
you giving proportionally and generously? Are you
giving with eagerness and enthusiasm? Are you giving
to your local congregation, sharing all good things
with the one who teaches you? If your answer to any
of these is “No,” then repent. Turn away from your sin
and toward God for forgiveness. Confess your failure.
Receive absolution. And commit to do better. We
know that the Spirit is willing but our flesh is weak.
We believe, and we pray that God, through Word and
Sacrament, would help our unbelief, our lack of trust
in His ability to provide.
And this is precisely what God promises. This is what
St. Paul wrote to the Church in Corinth: ““The point is
this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and whoever sows bountifully will also reap
bountifully. Each one must give as he has made up his
mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God
loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all
grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in
all things at all times, you may about in every good
work. As it is written, ‘He has distributed freely, he
has given to the poor; his righteousness endures
forever.’ He who supplies seed to the sower and bread
for food will supply and multiply your seed for
sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
You will be enriched in every way for all your
generosity, which through us will produce
thanksgiving to God” (2 Cor 9:6–15).
St. Paul tells us that the Lord of all will both supply
and increase what you need to give to the church for
its work in and for the world. He tells us that this
work that God is doing in us will enrich and bless us
in every way and through this it will produce
thanksgiving to God. Everyone benefits. We will be
blessed in our giving, and it will produce thanksgiving
to God in those who receive it.
Giving to the church is not a burden, just like all of
God’s teaching (1 John 5:2–4). They are not a burden
because of He who gives it: the God who loves us and
gave His only Son to die so that we may live. He
loved us in that He sent His Son, born of a woman,
born under the law to redeem those under the law, that
we might receive adoption as sons. . . . So we are no
longer slaves, but sons, and if a son, then an heir
through God (Galatians 4:4–5, 7). We are heirs. We
receive the full rights of sons, a status that Christ our
Lord achieved for us by His death, resurrection, and
ascension.
So we strive to do what He asks because we are His
children. And when we don’t, we repent. We confess
our sins. We receive absolution. We desire to do
better, praying that God would work in us both to will
and to do according to His good pleasure (Philippians
2:13).
