TRINITY TIDBITS A monthly newsletter for the people of Trinity Lutheran Church of Sealy, Texas
“He Is Risen!” … “He Is Risen, Indeed!!” Every Easter Sunday, we come to worship together. And when we see each
other, it is our common custom to greet each other with the words, “Christ is
risen!” and the other person responds, “He is risen, indeed! Alleluia!” This
greeting is actually called the Easter Greeting or Easter Acclamation or in
some circles it is also known as the Paschal Greeting. Once again this year
you may greet somebody with the Paschal Greeting, “He is Risen”. You
have spoken this greeting many times in years past. So how far back in
history does this greeting exist?
The greeting is based on the story of two men walking to Emmaus. Jesus
meets them, walks with them, and talks with them. When they come to the
village where they are staying, Jesus acted as if He were going farther but
they strongly urge him to stay with them. Then when Jesus takes the bread,
blesses and breaks it and then gives it to them do they recognize Him. They
said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us
on the road, while He opened the Scriptures? Immediately they get up and
run back to Jerusalem, back to the eleven disciples. Then in Luke 24:34 they
say these words to the eleven, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared
to Simon!”
There is a legendary tradition in the Christian church that tells the story of
Mary Magdalene evangelizing the Roman world. The story says that she
went to Rome. She then supposedly addresses the emperor, Caesar Tiberias
with the words, “Christ is risen.” Now so the story goes, she then, according
to Roman custom, presents the emperor with a red egg. Following Mary’s
lead the early Christians then began giving eggs to one another on the days
celebrating the resurrection of our Lord. Of course, this is merely a story and
not really backed up by any historical author.
This greeting is also said to have been part of St. Augustine’s baptism on
Easter Eve in 387 AD. (Reminder to you, St. Augustine’s teaching had a
large influence on Martin Luther.) The ancient church father, St. John
Chrysostom, at the baptism, quite possibly heralded out the words, “Christ is
Risen”. Quite possibly, historically speaking, this was the first recorded
Easter greeting.
Whether or not, how ancient this custom is and how we practice it, (In some
Christian circles it is customary to give each other three kisses on the cheek
when saying the greeting.) what matters most is that the fact remains:
CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN INDEED! ALLELUIA! Xristosu voskrese! Voistinu voskrese! Chrystos usvaskros! Sapraudy uvaskros! Krist uskrsnu! Uistinu uskrsnu!
Kristus vstal z mrtvych! Vpravde vstal z mrtvych! Krishti u ngjall! Vertet u ngjall!
Chrystus zmartwychwstal! Prawdziwie zmartwychwstal!
Kristus is opstien! Wis is er opstien!
Christus ist auferstanden! Er ist wahrhaft auferstanden!
Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed!

Each year the preschool comes together with St. Jude’s Research Hospital to teach the children the importance of bike safety while raising money for childhood cancer research. Bike safety week will be Monday, April 22nd - Friday, April 26th.

St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee is the first institution established for the sole purpose of conducting basic and clinical research into catastrophic childhood diseases, mainly cancer. St. Jude’s Research Hospital sends us a week long program that teaches the children about bike safety with story color sheets, reading book and DVD. The DVD is about Bikewell Bear and lessons about bike safety.
The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of the founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. We are asking each child to donate $2.00 or more that would go towards St. Jude’s Research Hospital to help families in need with the cost of treatments for their child who has cancer. As a preschool we teach the children about what donations are and how we can help families in need. With each child’s donation of $2.00 or more to St. Jude’s Research Hospital for support, we can help millions around the world both through increased safety and cancer research and treatment. Let’s try to raise as much money as we can to help these families in need.
Bike Safety with Retired Trooper Gary!
Retired Trooper Gary Pflughaupt will come to the preschool to talk to the children about Bike Safety on Tuesday, April 30th at 10:00 am. Mr. Gary will reinforce Bikewell Bears lessons from St. Jude’s on bike safety. He will talk to the children about the importance of wearing a helmet, watching out for people, and being aware of parked cars and knowing driveways can be dangerous while riding a bike. Teaching safety is important here at Trinity.
Park and Picnic!
Springtime is here with great spring weather. With the beautiful sunshine the four year old classes are looking forward to enjoy a park and picnic at the Lions Park on Thursday, April 25th. Students will need to bring a sack lunch along with a drink. The children will
decorate a special bag for their lunches as a reminder to the parent not to forget. A permission form must be signed to attend the park and picnic. We also need at least (6) or more parent volunteers to help chaperone, have close eye supervision and help transport the children across the street to the park and back to the preschool. If rain occurs we will have a sack lunch day, play games and have their lunch in the gym. All parents that are helping with the park and picnic please be here by 9:30 a.m. Remember that each child is a precious gift from God and must be supervised. Please do not gather and visit with each other but make sure you are in view of the children at all times.
