Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grassroots Stadium for this Spartan South

Midland Premier League tie.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Hanwell Town to Tring

for the 1st time this season and hope they enjoy their short stay with us.

We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Referee- Ian Corner, and his

assistants Tony Butler & Chris Scott Today’s match is sponsored by- Mick Eldridge and we would like to thank him once

again for his generous support.

Today’s opponants are riding high in the league and they come to us with only one

defeat in the league, this being to London Colney. They are second in the league 7

points behind Ampthill but with 4 games in hand. They have been galvanised by the

return of Manager Ray Duffy and assisted by his sons, 3 of them being in today’s

squad.

We had a dissappointing result on Tuesday, going out of The Challenge Trophy 5-4

on penalties to Hoddesdon Town. The second time they have beaten us in this way

in the last two seasons. What made things worse was the fact we looked

comfortable 3-1 up and should have been further in front. The equalising goal in

normal time came in the 96th minute. With no further goals in extra time in came to

the dreaded penalties and to the last of five before we missed.

However on a plus, as with Saturday at AFC Dunstable we played some good

football but were let down by a bit of inexperience.

This is the start of a big week for us with Stevenage visiting on Tuesday in The

County Cup and then a trip to Kent on Saturday in The Carlsberg FA Fase. To face

Ashford United, formally Ashford Town

The reserves had a good win against Berkhamsted 3-1. A fixture always nice to get

a result in. That’s six wins on the trot for Colin, Ian and their boys.

The Supper Auction we had to cancell last week has been re-scheduled for late

February so please put this in your diaries.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 3 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned which

resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists in

the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game.

The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the league

after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award.

Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in

March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement with

Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase

for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round.

In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd

enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying on

in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position.

However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up the

St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time

Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy.

However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to Arsenal reserves.

SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. unfortunately the Ladies team withdrew from their league through lack of players.

HANWELL TOWN F.C.

Hanwell Town was originally founded in 1920 by a team of ‘Geordies’ working in the area and it is believed that this explains the black and white striped colours which are still used today. The club were in the London League from 1924 to 1927 and it was in this period that they won their first major honour, sharing with Roxeth and Harrow Old Boys the Middlesex F.A Junior Charity Cup in 1926. Little else is known about the club before their disbandment at the outset of the second world war. The club reformed in 1947/1948 playing in the Dauntless League where they climbed up through the divisions earning promotion in four successive seasons. Whilst remaining in the Dauntless League with a third eleven, the club switched allegiance to the Harrow Wembley and District League where they remained until 1969/1970.During their period in the Harrow and Wembley League the club reached eight cup finals in various league and county competitions and each time finished on the losing side. In 1970/1971 the club gained promotion to the Middlesex County League and in their very first season the club won the League cup, the side being captained by the club's current chairman Bob Fisher. The club remained in the Middlesex County League throughout the 1970’s playing at Ealing Central Sports Ground, their home for over twenty years but in June 1981 they achieved their ambition of obtaining a ground of their own when they moved to the then derelict Reynolds Field, their current home. Thanks to a small group of volunteers the ground was able to be used from the start of the 1981/1982 season and the club was granted Senior status for the commencement of the 1983-84 season. This enabled them to join The London Spartan League and they immediately won the Senior Division to gain promotion to the Premier Division where they remained until the amalgamation of the Spartan League with the South Midlands League in 1997/1998. During this period the club enjoyed considerable cup success winning The London Senior Cup in 1991/1992 and 1992/1993 and being losing finalists in 1993/1994.They also reached the final of the Spartan League cup in 1993/1994 and after drawing with Willesden Hawkeye at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic F.C, they were beaten in the replay at the start of the following season. In 1992/1993 they reached the final of the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup where they lost to Harrow Borough at Uxbridge F.C. after extra time. They reached the final of the same competition in 2000/2001 when they were again beaten, this time by Ashford Town (Middx).

In 1997/1998,their position of 12th in the League meant that in the first season of the Spartan South Midlands League in 1998/1999 that they would be required to play in the Senior Division. At the end of the 1997/1998 season Roy Nairn who had managed the side since the 1986/1987 season stood down to be replaced by former player Ray Duffy with Roy continuing his association with the club in a coaching capacity. The side immediately gained promotion to the Premier Division finishing in runners up spot to Holmer Green .Both clubs finishing with the same number of points but with Holmer Green boasting a much better goal difference. Following this promotion the club maintained a top half position in the League table in each season except for one in the following seven seasons. In 2002/2003 the club won the Premier Division Cup when they beat Harefield United in the final, their first cup success in ten years. In the same season to celebrate Roy Nairn's twenty years service to the club,Chelsea sent a side to meet the club at the start of the season. The Town ran out 5-3 winners with two of the goals being scored by Martin Rowlands of Brentford & QPR and Chris Boothe of Farnborough Town, both of whom having started their careers at the club during Roy's period of managership. The Rowlands's family have very strong links with the club with dad Arthur having played for the club in the 1982/1983 season and since then all five of his sons, Adam, Keith, Martin, Stephen and Anthony have worn the club's colours with Keith now the club's record goalscorer. In 2004/2005, the club led The Premier Division for much of the season only to suffer a dramatic loss of form in the final weeks of the season which allowed Potters Bar Town to finish as comfortable League winners with the Town in second place. In season 2005-06 with promotion to level Four a key objective, the club managed to finish in third place just edging out Harefield United on goal difference Two thirds of the way through that season Ray Duffy resigned and was replaced as joint managers by his former assistant Danny Vincent and former player Pat Gavin. Third place enabled Town to win promotion to The British Gas Business Southern League for the 2006/2007 season. However, Town's stay in the Southern League only lasted one season as they finished second from bottom and were relegated back

to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League . During their stay in the Southern League, Town parted company with the management team of Vincent and Gavin with the reins being taken over by former player Chris Boothe, who himself resigned at the end of the 2007-08 season. The club finished in seventh place in the Premier Division of the Molten Spartan South Midlands League in the 2008-09 season and in 12th place in the 2009-10 season. There was a further change in the managerial team at the start of the 2010-11 season with Boysie Wise departing and Jason Tucker stepping into the role of assistant manager to the club’s leading goalscorer Keith Rowlands. After a very promising start to the season, the side fell away drastically at the end of the season eventually finishing in fifteenth position, the lowest spot that they have occupied since gaining promotion to the division at the end of the 1998-99 season. The club continued to struggle in the 2011-2012 season and mid way through the season, the club reluctantly accepted the resignations of club stalwarts Rowlands and Tucker. They were replaced by a new managerial team of Tommy Williams and Luke Evans. Despite results improving , the club were unable to climb out of the relegation zone and faced relegation but the demise of clubs at level four, resulted in Town being reprieved from relegation. At the end of the season both Williams and Evans resigned their managerial roles and the club turned again to Ray Duffy to hold the managerial reins for the 2012-13 season. He will be aided by Mark Adams and his former Assistant Danny Vincent. The club enjoyed a successful season finishing in 6th position and now look forward to the challenges that a new season will bring. Since arriving at Reynolds Field, the club have steadily improved the facilities with the installation of floodlights in 1989 , the erection of a small stand and more recently, thanks to a grant from The Football Foundation, the erection of a stand and toilets for disabled persons. During 2005-2006 to ensure that the club met The Football Association's ground grading requirements, the seating capacity of the stand was extended to 180 seats and covered terracing was erected behind one of the goals. That this work was possible was entirely due to the generousity of the club's president Dave Iddiols and the club's then sponsor Gowing & Pursey Ltd. Tottenham Hotspur led by Republic of Ireland international and current Birmingham City manager Chris Hughton and managed by former England goalkeeper Ray Clemence were Town’s first opponents under lights and since then Spurs again, Chelsea, Brentford and QPR have all played games on the ground. The club have spent a considerable amount of money on their pitch over the years and it has proven to be money well spent. Their groundsman Adam Rowlands having won the groundsman of the year award from the Middlesex County F.A. in seasons 2002/2003 and 2003/2004. In 2004/2005, Adam won a similar award from The Football Association for groundsmen for level 4 and 5 clubs for London and the South East Regions. At the end of the 2004/2005 season club chairman Bob Fisher was awarded a medallion by The Football Association in recognition of his fifty years service to the club. The club have a thriving Youth Section and this season will be fielding 13 Youth sides, Both the Senior Club and Youth section has achieved charter standard and are highly regarded in the county and the local community. The club have been enormously fortunate over the years to have benefited by the commitment and effort of so many to ensure that the club survived and prospered. There are too many to name them all but special mention should be made of the Conn family, Jim, Mike and Jack, the Haynes family, Les, Stan and Reg, the Rowlands family, the Swift family, Bob, Stuart and Kenny, Sam Kelso, Phil Player, John Wake. Phil Scott, Roy Nairn, Ray Duffy and of course Dave Iddiols but no history of Hanwell Town would be complete without a mention of the club's secretary from its reformation in the 1940's to 1988, Ron Walker. Without a home ground of their own for the majority of this period, Ron's total dedication and commitment meant that the club were able to keep going whist many around them folded. Until he passed away at the age of 90 in November 2011, Ron continued in his role of trustee to take a keen interest in the club's fortunes.

We made the short trip over the county border to Beds and came away empty handed after going down 2-0 to 5th placed AFC Dunstable. Creasey Park has not been a happy hunting ground for us over the years, we have now failed to win there is 12 visits, and after conceding a goal within 73 seconds of kick off, when BJ Christie headed home a corner at the near post, we feared the worse. After that initial early shock we settled down well and there was little to choose between the sides. Jack Sunderland made some quick runs down the right early on and AFC looked sharp in attack, but there were few chances created and neither keeper got their knees dirty. Mid way through the half Vinnie Iannone and Graham Hall produced some lovely link up play to slice through the home defence but Vinnie's curling shot was kept out by a superb flying save from home keeper Ryan Darby. AFC responded through their leading scorer BJ Christie whose penetrating run set up Marcus Campbell but Mike Underwood did very well to save the shot with his feet. With the interval looming we suffered a further set back when Jack Seaton was sent off for a foul on Christie and we had to play the whole of the second half with 10 players. The foul probably warranted a red card but it has to be said that the AFC centre forward got away with a lot of verbal aggression and dubious challenges. One tackle on Michael Green was late and as a result he needed quite a lot of treatment on his ankle from Kim. There were others as well and amazingly Christie escaped punishment, although 5 of his colleagues did get yellow cards. This laxity shown by the officials probably didn't help calm the situation down. In addition it was not a good for football to see every player in the AFC side, including the keeper and with the Manager joining in from the touch line, haranguing the Referee and putting pressure on him to send Jack off. But no matter how unacceptable this tactic is it did work. Half Time: AFC Dunstable 1 Tring Athletic 0 Being a goal down and a man short the prospects for the second half looked a bit daunting but full marks to the players who responded superbly to keep the game alive until the final few minutes.

Despite the odds being stacked against us we enjoyed a lot of possession and played some nice football. A wag in the crowd suggested that we played better with 10 players than 11 which was a complement to the response from players. Also at times we didn't look like a side that was a man down. Vinnie Iannone headed a Graham Hall free kick well wide but chances were at a premium for both sides. Chris Vardy came off the bench just past the hour and livened things up and almost set up an equaliser. Sam Joliffe (or should we say Jol-liffy!) went on a good run and slipped a nice pass to Chris Vardy down the left. Chris beat the defender and although his cross picked out Vinnie Iannone he could only stab the ball at the keeper. Later Chris Vardy worked his way into the AFC area but he was unable to find a colleague with his pass and a great opportunity was lost. With five minutes to go we failed to clear a high ball which fell to BJ Christie, who is being chased by Luton Town, and he grabbed his second of the match to douse any hopes we had of getting anything out of the game. It is also the first time this season that we have failed to score in a league game. The Ressies continued their impressive run as they overcame local rivals

Berkhamsted to make it 6 wins on the bounce. Where they have impressed

defensively in recent weeks here was the chance for the lads to get recognised for

their forward play.

For the first time in ages, they started well and were probing expertly down the

flanks and in the channels. On 10 minutes they took the lead. Goldenboy Olly

Butler is golden once again and he surged through the Berko defence and coolly

slotted the ball past the keeper. 1-0.

Berko were not getting a sniff and Leo Mullet was proving a handful up front.

On 35 mins it was 2-0 and it was prodigal son Paul Jeffrey who provided the

goods. Goldenboy Butler jinked down the right, made some space and crossed it

back for Jeffers to power the ball home with a Shearer like header. Yes, you read

that correctly. Jeffers powered the ball home with a Shearer like header.

Half Time - TAFC Res 2 Berkhamsted 0

Our opponents had a rollicking at half time and came out fired up. Former Tring

hero Che To, sporting a fine moustache and looking like one of Lee Van Cleefs

buddies in "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", made his debut for them and

within minutes of him coming on it was 2-1. A free kick was whipped in and was

glanced home past Craig Garrett. This was the first goal we have conceded for

380 minutes of football and the lads were gutted and nerves could have jangled.

They got straight back at it however, and were determined to put the game to

bed. Jeffers whipped in a peach of a cross - Mullet headed over. Chesterman

pulled the ball back, Mullet blazed over. Jarvis went close following a surge from

the back. Chesterman had a one on one saved. Would the third goal ever come?

Yes. Olly Butler surged down the right to cap a fine individual performance (a

purring Chris Juraszek said it was one of the best he had seen since his Dad took

him to watch Billy Meredith as a boy) and crossed it for Mullet to convert with a

goal his performance deserved.

F A Vase Travel Arrangements-

We have been drawn to play Ashford United away in the 3rd Round of the F A

Vase and we will again be using Smith's of Tring and have a 49 seater coach

booked. We will depart from The Grass Roots Stadium, Tring at 11:15am for

an estimated 1 hour 50 minute journey to Ashford's ground at The Homelands,

Ashford Road, Ashford, Kent TN26 1NJ. The coach will look to depart

Ashford at approximately 6pm arriving back in Tring about 8pm. Anyone

wishing to travel with the team should either email the club at

tringathleticfc@hotmail.com or add their name to the list in the clubhouse.

There will be a small charge of £5 towards the cost of travel.
