Grass Roots Talk

Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grass Roots Stadium for this our

final home game of the season.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of St.

Margaretsbury to Tring, we hope they enjoy their short stay with us, and

have a safe trip back afterwards.

We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Mr Doug Steele and

his assistants -Mr Lorenzo Hantea & Mr Steve Williams

Today's match is sponsored by Timothy Solk and we would like to thank

him and his family for their continued generous support.

We have met today's guests twice already this season and they have

definitely had the better of us winning 4-1 and 3-0. In fact we have only

won once in our last seven meetings. However results are pretty even over

the years and maybe the tide will swing back in our favour today.

We had a good win at Oxhey last Saturday, leaving it very late to get the

winner. This followed an excellent display against Sun Postal in the semi-

final of The St. Mary's Cup when we won 3-0. We had also lost to them

twice this year.

We now face Hemel Hempstead Town in The Final which will probably be on

May 4th but is yet to be confirmed. They won 9-0 against Leverstock Green

last Tuesday.

We are at Holmer Green on Tuesday for our final league game.

Kings Langley have been crowned Champions, a well-deserved feat as this

was their first season in The Premier Division. We can be proud to have

been one of the few sides to have beaten them this year.

On the social side we have a quiz night at the club tonight and then on the

16th May it is our presentation night.

The reserves still have home fixtures so the season does not end quite yet

To keep up with all our teams results, fixtures and general club news.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned

which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists

in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game. The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the

league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award. Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Page 7: Tring Athletic v St. Margaretsbury

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down

in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement

with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A

Vase for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim

round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large

crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference

league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reins and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying

on in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position. However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up

the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy. However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s

Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going

through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to

Arsenal reserves. SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then

losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the

League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi-final of the Premier Division Cup and

were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James

Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies

team withdrew from their league through lack of players. SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished

runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground

and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.

Brief History of St Margaretsbury FC

Founded in 1894 as Stanstead Abbotts FC, with their home at Mill Field, Cappell Lane in Stanstead Abbotts. Playing in the Herts County League, East Herts and Hertford & District Leagues they won the local Graphic Cup during the 1920’s and 1930’s. After 1945 the Club played in the Waltham & District League, re-joining the Herts County League in season 1947/48. In their first season back in the Herts County League the Club won Division two, gaining promotion and winning the Aubrey (League) Cup. In 1962 the Club moved to their present location, St Margaretsbury Recreation Ground, one of the conditions being they change their name to St Margaretsbury FC. The Club’s next honour was in 1972 when again they won the Aubrey Cup. At the end of the 1987/88 season the 1st XI were briefly relegated to Division One, but returned to the Premier Division at the start of 1991/92. After 44 years in the Herts Senior County League the 1st XI became members of the London Spartan League, Premier Division for the start of season 1992/93, finishing in a very creditable 6th place. That season also saw the Club gained its first County Cup by winning the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy, defeating Sawbridgeworth Town 2-1, at Ware FC. By 1993/94 our league position had progressed to finish 3rd and while celebrating our 100 years centenary we came 2nd in 1994/95. In 1995/96 the Club won the Premier Division Championship and the Reserves and the 3rd X1 made it a treble of Championships by winning their respective Divisions in the McMullen’s Hertford and District League. The Roy Bailey Memorial Trophy was won that same season, defeating Ware 2-0 at Enfield FC. In 1997/98 the 1st XI won the Herts Charity Shield, defeating London Colney on penalties. In 1998/99 the 1st XI were accepted into the newly formed Minerva Footballs Spartan South Midlands League, Premier Div. Another Milestone in 2000/01 when the Club qualified for entry into the FA Cup. In 2001/02, the Club was awarded the Houghton Regis Cup by the Spartan South Midlands League for achievements in the FA Cup competition. In the same season the Club gained its first Spartan South Midlands League competitive trophy, when they won the Premier Division Cup, beating Potters Bar Town 2-0 in the final. Season 2003/04 had another good run in the F.A.Cup, having negotiated three rounds before going down to Kettering Town 0-2 away. In the same season, the South Midland Floodlit Cup was won with a 3-2 victory against Wooton Blue X and finished 3rd in the league. Season 2004/05 saw changes in management and key players, and although viewed as a building season the club still managed a credible 7th place in the premier league. Season 2005/06 saw a good FA Cup run, with a dramatic 3-2 away win against Ryman Premier League Billericay Town. Bury finishing 12th in the league. Season 2006/07 saw major changes… not unfortunately good changes! This started with new Chairman John Tobin, and a newly appointed Director of Football Steve Dix. Paul Gurney was first team manager, and it was a very tough season, coming close to relegation but finally finishing 15th in the league. Season 2008/09 – a very turbulent season in terms of internal club issues that put a strain on every aspect of our efforts to achieve our true potential. Despite these new First team manager Lee Judges still managed to hit a credible 14th league position and came in as runners up in the Premier Division Cup. Season 2009/10 – the club saw new Chairman Gary Stock take up his position, who along with an almost completely new committee, having had to overcome issues at the club that started with the previous Chairman & Director of Football being banned for gross misconduct. With the majority of our youth teams being moved and renamed in more than questionable circumstances, derisory finances on handover in a recession year, this was without doubt one of the toughest starts to any season. But the team somehow still matched the previous season’s 14th league position and were runners up in the Herts Charity Shield final. Season 2010/11 – Much-needed structure, organisation, processes and drive for Chartered Standard are helping to move the club forward, along with ground work & improved facilities like the pitch-side snack bar. Season 2011/12 – Our U18’s SCFYL team performed magnificently, winning their own division and then going on to beat the much admired Academy side Boreham Wood U18’s in the 4 team divisional final, to become overall League

Page 9: Tring Athletic v St. Margaretsbury

Champions. Our 1st team finished 18th, whilst the reserves finished 3rd and won the Floodlit Cup. Season 2011/12 – The club’s restructuring and regeneration program was complemented by the successful merger of John Warner Youth FC. The First team finished 12th in the league and were Premier League Cup Finalists, while the Reserves were Finalists in the Floodlit Cup. The Senior Club also achieved Chartered Standard, Season 2012/13 – The First Team had an exceptional season, finishing in 4th position in a very strong league. First Team Manager Lee Judges and Assistant Manager Clive Brooks decided to step down at the end of the season, Lee having spent 6 seasons and Clive 3 seasons at the Club. Season 2013/14 – Gavin Kelsey became 1st Team Manager, appointing Paul Tomkins to the position of Reserves Manager. Both senior sides had another very strong season, with the first team again finishing 4th in the league and the Reserves winning their division. Season 2014/15 – New appointments come into place as we re-introduce an U18 Academy side to play in the SCYFL, managed by Eddie McLoughlin. Sadly Reserves Manager Paul Tomkins had to step down, but we are blessed with good people at the club and Alex Ward was appointed to replace Paul for this season. We wish both managers well. Another landmark is also being reached with the introduction of a Ladies team – initially a Year 5/6 in a league, with Year 4 training.

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLAND PREMIER DIVISION Saturday 18th April 2015 Oxhey Jets 2 3 Tring Athletic (Lee Armitt 39 & 67 (Kieron Turner 21,Taylor Collins 76,Ryan Sturges 90 + 4) Athletic came back from being 2 - 1 down to take all three points after Ryan Sturges’ winner in the 4th minute of stoppage time. It was a typical end of season game played on a pitch where controlling the ball was difficult as well as a strong cross wind. Both sides appeared short of players and could only muster two substitutes each. Athletic had the better of the early exchanges, but Jets from the first corner of the game had a chance which keeper Jack Hopwood managed to palm away for another corner. Following that opportunity Athletic dominated the game, they created a number of chances and it came as no surprise that they opened the scoring in the 21st minute, Kieron Turner curling in a superb free kick into the far corner of the goal. With Athletic unable to capitalise on all their chances Jets then equalised in the 39th minute. Athletic gave the ball away on the halfway line, the ball was played quickly forward to Lee Armitt who checked inside before scoring into the far corner of the goal. Following this setback Athletic continued to create chances with Kieron Turner unlucky not to score again at the end of the first half. Half Time: Oxhey Jets 1 1 Tring Athletic The second half began with Jets nearly scoring within a couple of minutes following a free kick, luckily for Athletic the chance was wasted with the shot going harmlessly wide. Athletic were slow to get going and were pumping the ball high upfield, this may have been the intention to combat the strong wind and bumpy pitch. A number of times it worked with Athletics quick forwards running onto the ball over the top, however they were again unable to capitalise on the chances. Athletic brought on Chris Salmon and Adam Toone in the 65th minute for Kieron Turner and Ryan McMahon. In the 67th minute Jets took the lead. Following an Athletic throw into the home sides area the ball was cleared but Lee Stobbs was unable to control the loose ball, the ball was quickly played to striker Lee Armitt who took on Athletics defenders before firing across keeper Jack Hopwood into the corner of the net. Conceding this goal appeared to inspire Athletic, just 9 minutes later they equalised, Chris Vardy managed to beat the offside trap but his shot was saved, however the loose ball fell to Taylor Collins who blasted into the goal. Oxhey Jets sustained a number of injuries during the second half resulting in 5 minutes of stoppage time. This proved vital for Athletic who scored what proved to be the

Page 12: Tring Athletic v St. Margaretsbury

winner in the 4th minute of added time. Ryan Sturges found himself in acres of space, he then checked inside before shooting high into the net from the edge of the box. This fixture has always proved difficult for Athletic and have rarely won at Oxhey, the second half was more even, possibly a draw would have been a fairer result, however Athletic did have the better of the first half creating numerous chances and continued

to press forward right up until the final whistle. Chilfest is back for 2015 UPDATE, Saturday's acts announced are Billy Ocean (headlining) ABC,

Limahl, Bad Manners, The Real Thing, The Blow Monkeys & Sonia. Tickets

still on sale.

Since announcing back in July that Chilfest would not be returning we have

been overwhelmed by the comments received from so many in support of the

event. We have now had a chance to consider your views and this, combined

with some exciting developments in identifying possible line-ups for a future

event, has led to a re-think on our part.

So we're delighted to announce that Chilfest WILL be returning on Saturday 10

July 2015.

Staging Chilfest has always been about doing good for the local community and

we're also delighted to announce that we have once again chosen Rennie Grove

Hospice Care as our charity. Despite the financial challenges of the last two

years we have donated £20,000 to the charity to help them deliver hospice at

home care and support for people in our local community with cancer and life-

limiting illness.

We'll be posting more details about Chilfest 2015 in the coming weeks on this

page and on our website but please share this announcement with all your

Facebook and non-Facebook friends and help us get the word out there

Marys Cup Semi Final

Sponsored by Keith Hamilton

TAFC First team 3-0 Sun Sports

TAFC goals: Christopher Vardy (2), Luke Dunstan

At the third time of asking we finally beat Sun Sports, who have already inflicted two league defeats on

us, to secure our place in the Final of the St Mary's Cup. This was also the first time we have scored

against the Watford based side this season, and we did so in fine style with a couple of super goals from

Chris Vardy, to leave him just one short of 30 goals, and an absolute gem from Luke Dunstan.

This was a typical cup tie with fast, no holds barred football as well as a moment of controversy a few

minutes either side of the break when the visitors had an appeal for a penalty turned down then had their

captain sent off which meant they played most of the second half with 10 players.

But those two incidents should not detract from the superb performance put in by our young side against

tough opposition lying 4th in the table who still have an outside chance of finishing runners-up to Kings

Langley who clinched the Premier Division title on the same night after they beat Wembley 2-0 at home.

With Captain Chris Salmon and fellow central defender Adam Toone both inured Julian and Ian decided to

change our usual formation from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2. With Chris and Adam missing the defence comprised of

Dan Steadman and Kevin McManus in the middle flanked by Lee Stobbs and Ryan Sturges and they were

superb, keeping our 11th clean sheet of the season and restricting our guests to few genuine goal scoring

opportunities.

The game started at a hectic pace with the first shot not coming until the 11th minute with Sun wide man

Nathan Pooley firing a powerful shot just off target. We looked quite lively in attack but defender Edwin

Twesigomwe, formerly with West Ham as a schoolboy, put his pace to good effect to nip in the bud a

couple of our promising opportunities. Equally we were indebted to Jack Hopwood's alertness in coming

off his line to clear any danger.

Kieran Turner's nicely struck free kick in the 19th minute was tipped over by keeper Ross Hampton and

soon afterwards Luke Dustan tried to curl the ball into the far top corner with his left foot, and whilst it

missed the target it was a good effort and a sign that the 18 year old is growing in confidence. Then former

Leverstock Green player and Craig Bellamy look alike James Armstrong skillfully laid the ball off to

Nathan Pooley who volleyed a good effort just over from the edge of the area.

Sam Joliffe wore the Captain's arm band and was as usual in the heat of the battle in central midfield and

he led by example by setting up the opening goal in the 34th minute with an astute pass to pick our Chris

Vardy. There was still a lot to do for our leading marksman, but he showed great skill to control the ball

and then lob the on rushing keeper. It was a terrific piece of finishing skill from Vardy and it enabled us to

get our noses in front. Score 1-0.

James Armstrong had an opening 4 minutes later when he was picked out by a long cross into the box but

he was unable to control the ball and the opportunity was lost. A minute into added time we had a narrow

escape when Ashley Lewis was denied a goal by a magnificent block by Ryan Sturges and James

Armstrong went down as Jack Hopwood tried to claim the ball. The opposition screamed for a penalty but

the referee waved their protests away.

Whether it was a penalty or not will depend on what colour scarf you wear, someone wearing a yellow one

would see it as a clear foul whilst a supporter donning a red one would say the Sun centre forward was

hardly touched and went down far too easily.

But despite the polarisation of views the reality was that we went in with a 1-0 lead which was just about

Page 25: Tring Athletic v St. Margaretsbury

deserved on the balance of play in the first half.

Just as the first half ended in dispute so did the second start in the same manner when Ashley Lewis was

given a straight red for a two footed challenge on Dan Steadman in the 51st minute. Again view points

differed according to which club supported but Sun now faced 40 plus minutes with a man short.

Despite this set back Sun then had their best spell of the game as they clearly adopted the view that they

had nothing to lose so they pushed men forward looking for an equaliser. They dominated possession and

although the game opened up we couldn't keep hold of the ball to make use of the spaces opening up in

the opposition's defence.

We were on the back foot but fortunately we dug in and defended superbly and Jack Hopwood was forced

into just one non-routine save when he showed a safe pair of hands to catch and control a firm shot at his

near post from Chris McCarthy after a good run by the Sun midfielder.

We gradually weathered the storm and midway through the half we were a whisker away from doubling

our lead. Taylor Collins whipped over a great cross to pick out Chris Vardy who hit the post, the ball fell

to Kieran Turner who was denied a certain goal by a timely intervention from former Athletic favourite

Matt Jarvis.

Both sides made substitutions we brought on Greg Deer for Kieran Turner and they replaced Matt Jarvis

and Gary Simmonds with Colin Wilson and Richard Pearce, but the Sun subs had only been on the pitch

for 3 minutes when we double our lead with a classic counter attack.

Lee Stobbs, who has settled in so well since his arrival a month ago, was the instigator with a terrific lung

bursting 80 yard run in the 80th minute. He nicked the ball off an opposition player on the edge of our

area then sped up the right wing to the edge of the Sun penalty box then crossed in for Chris Vardy who

stretched to get a toe to the ball and divert it inside the post. It was Vardy's 29 goal of the season and put

us within touching distance of the final. Score 2-0.

But Sun are not a side to give up easily and they had an opportunity when sub Richard Pearce put a great

cross in from the bye line, but none of his colleagues were on the same wave length and the ball drifted

harmlessly out of the danger area. We were now controlling the game and keeping possession much more

efficiently than earlier in the half.

Further changes were made with Ryan McMahon coming on for Taylor Collins and Dan Bourne for Gary

Wallace. The game was drifting to a conclusion but there was an added bonus for our supporters in the 3rd

minute of added time with a superb goal from young Luke Dunstan. Picking the ball up in the inside left

channel he went past a number of challenges before rifling home a shot from the edge of the area. It was a

quality finish from a young player who has grown in stature as the season has progressed. Score 3-0.

Julian and Ian can be proud of the way the players performed against a quality side containing a lot

players with senior experience. This will be our 8th appearance in the St Mary's Cup Final which has been

in existence since 1888. So far we have won it 5 times, the last time was in 2011, and lost just once to

Berkhamsted in 2013. One Final was not played in 2000 due to bad weather. Our opponents will be either

Leverstock Green or Hemel Hempstead who meet at Pancake Lane this coming Tuesday.

League

TAFC Reserve team 1-0 Welling United

TAFC goals: Michael Green

If you look under "Punching Above Your Weight" in the Collins Handbook of Phrase Meanings

you will probably find Tring Athletic Reserves 1 Welling United (a club in the Conference

Premier) listed as an example. Welling had only lost 1 of the last 9 games. Yet this victory was

probably just about deserved and means 3 wins on the bounce now for the Reserves.

Tring were under siege for the first 10 minutes - conceding 7 corners - one of which was hacked

off the line by Captain James Cullimore. We were battling to keep our heads above water.

Smethers wrestling with a First Team Trilliast and Fitzgerald getting stuck in to avert the danger.

The ball simply would not hold up front. Slowly the lads got a grip and the game resorted to nip

and tuck for the rest of the half.

On 45 mins from a set piece Smethers was found in acres of space 10 yards out - but the ghosts

of Enfield Town returned to haunt him as he quite obviously did not have a clue what to do and

the chance was gone.

A few supporters were concerned that Tring were not playing tika-taka football and were not 4-0

up at half time but the Tring management were delighted with parity.

Half Time - 0-0

On 48 mins came the moment. Paul Jeffrey swung over a corner and Michael Green met it and

arrowed his header into the net. 1-0. The lads were on top - could they hang on?

They were doing more than that. Olly Butler had woken up and was put clean through but

missed. At the other end Grasso made a couple of fine saves.

The clock was ticking down- very slowly. On 85 minutes Tring should have sealed it. Olly Butler

danced down the right and crossed. Sam Joliffe was 6 yards out - he had to score. He didn't - the

ball sailed high and over the stand.

Tring clung on for a famous win and the lads had a great time in the showers afterwards

discussing hair products and arguing about body hair trimmers.

Team - Grasso, Cullimore J, Tomlin G, Cullimore T, Smethers, Green, Naylor (Seaton),

Fitzgerald, Butler O, Joliffe, Jeffrey. Subs Not used - West, Caterer
