PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Steven Visco, Ph. D, AAIPresident

  As  this  is  my  last  President’s  Message,  I  thought  this  would  be  a  great  opportunity  to  reflect  on  the  last  24  months.

  It  has  been  my  honor  and  greatest  professional  achievement  to  date  to  serve  as  your  President.    The  endless  hours  of  planning  and  execuCon  of  our  many  meeCngs  and  the  outpouring  of  support  from  our  members  have  made  it  all  worthwhile.    The  increased  member  parCcipaCon,  one  of  the  goals  of  my  presidency,  was  a  pleasure  to  be  a  part  of.

  With  the  support  of  my  board,  we  were  able  to  deliver  2  themed  InstallaCons,  meeCngs  on  relevant  topics,  reaching  out  to  our  local  boroughs  and  bringing  meeCngs  to  them,  two  amazing  holiday  parCes  which  gave  our  members  the  opportunity  to  socialize  in  a  fesCve  holiday  seFng,  two  wildly  successful  golf  ouCngs,  we  represented  TriCounty  on  four  LegislaCve  days,  gaining  support  on  our  local  topics,  supported  The  Inn(Interfaith  NutriConal  Network),  awarded  over  $20,000  in  scholarships,  implemented  a  ground  breaking  agent  communicaCon  portal  with  TriCounty  Linked  Up,  successfully  launched  TriCounty’s  You  Tube  page  which  currently  has  15  acCve  videos  with  over  1,300  views,  TriCounty’s    Facebook  page,  our  well  received  monthly  President’s  message  and  most  recently  the  recogniCon  of  IIABNY  “Local  AssociaCon  of  the  Year”.    This  has  been  an  impressive  24  months  for  TriCounty  under  my  presidency.

  The  Local  AssociaCon  of  the  Year  Award  is  the  culminaCon  of  the  outstanding  work  I  have  been  so  proud  to  be  a  part  of.    Without  the  support  of  Pat  Calvert,  Jeanne  Abatelli,  my  enCre  execuCve  board  and  outstanding  directors,  acCve  membership,  my  office  staff  and  incredibly  supporCve

family,  an  award  of  this  caliber  would  not  have  been  possible.    My  hear[elt  thanks  to  each  and  every  one  of  you!

  With  mixed  emoCon,  I  will  pass  the  gavel  on  to  Bob  Mackoul  on  June  5th  at  our  Annual  InstallaCon  Dinner  at  Fox  Hollow  in  Woodbury.

  I  feel  confident  in  the  future  of  TriCounty  due  to  the  up  and  coming  directors  and  officers  and  the  amazing  groundwork  we  have  established  for  the  future  of  our  disCnguished  associaCon.    A  more  dedicated  group  of  individuals  you  will  never  meet.

  As  immediate  Past  President  you  can  count  on  me  to  support  our  incoming  President  and  all  of  his  endeavors.

  I  am  grateful  for  the  opportunity  the  membership  has  given  me  to  serve  as  President.    This  is  not  goodbye,  but  merely  the  closing  of  a  chapter  of  my  professional  career.    I  look  forward  to  my  future  involvement  with  TriCounty  and  IIABNY  in  any  capacity  I  am  called  to.

TriCounty Receives Local Association of The Year Award

Strong local associations are the backbone of the success of IIABNY and play a major role in building relationships between agents, carriers and vendors, advocating on the critical issues to the industry, encouraging education and professional development among members and developing consumer knowledge and trust in the independent insurance agency system.   We received several outstanding submissions for Local Association of the Year and I am proud to say that our local associations are strong and active throughout the state.   Tonight I will recognize the 2013 Local Association of the Year for the outstanding effort and accomplishments of its volunteer leaders, staff and members.  This year was a particularly challenging and unique year for our downstate members due to the impact and aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.  Two local associations stepped up and worked together during and after the crisis to support and assist independent agents and insurance consumers.  Both Local Associations had many impressive accomplishments, but I cannot separate them since they joined forces after Sandy to advocate for and educate our members and their clients that were hardest hit by the effects of the storm.  Shortly after the storm, they met with Suffolk County Housing and Social Services agencies to aid in efforts to find alternative housing for people directly affected by Sandy.  They joined forces and worked with the county to get the word out to IIABNY members about a program that waived sales tax on construction materials.  One of the Suffolk Local Board members was asked to join the County of Suffolk Emergency Housing Task force and worked with the Long Island Builders Institute to issue press releases that provided the public with guidelines for choosing a contractor and how to avoid being taken advantage of.  

Several members were also asked to join the Nassau County Task Force for Insurance Issues Post-Sandy.  The two local associations worked together to plan and present a joint meeting where Dr. Robert Harwig, President and CEO of the Insurance Information Institute, spoke to members about the effect of the storm on the Long Island

insurance marketplace, agents, carriers and insureds.  Both associations also offered a program called “Lessons Learned from Sandy” where a panel of representatives from FEMA, Travelers and Selective Flood responded to questions from members. 

Their efforts supported our members during the crisis and enhanced the image of the independent agent.  In addition to the tremendous work that they did in relation to the storm, these local associations also had the largest number of members attending both L-day in Albany and the National Legislative Conference in Washington.  They also have a regular schedule where they meet on a monthly basis  appointments with their legislators in their local offices.  They believe that Legislative advocacy is an important part of being a Big I member.  It is my honor to present the Local Association of the Year to the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Suffolk County and Tri-County Independent Insurance Agents Association!  I would ask David M. Borg and Kevin Crossley, in Steve Visco’s place, to accept on behalf of their associations.

The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York, Inc. awarded its highest honor earlier this month to Patricia Calvert, executive director for the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of Suffolk County, Inc., and the Tri-County Independent Insurance Agents Association. She was one of three recipients of the Distinguished Service Award at the not-for-profit trade association’s leadership dinner following its Annual Business Meeting at the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown, New York.

Calvert is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of both associations. She works with the volunteer leaders of the organizations

to plan and present meetings and special events. The Tri-County association represents independent insurance agents and brokers in Kings, Nassau, Queens and Richmond Counties; the Suffolk County association represents insurance producers in that county.

Presenting the award, outgoing IIABNY Chair of the Board Thomas J. Crowley described Calvert’s contributions to the success of the two associations over many years of service. “She is one of the most dedicated and professional people I have ever

had the privilege to work with,” he said, “and she is a friend to all who know her.”

The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York, Inc. presented the Outstanding Committee Chair Award to David H. Borg of Borg & Borg, Inc. in Huntington, New York. He was one of several award recipients at IIABNY’s leadership dinner May 9, held after its Annual Business Meeting at the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown, New York.

As chair of the association’s Next Generation Insurance Professionals Committee, Borg has planned, promoted and executed successful events for IIABNY members on Long Island. He has also traveled extensively around the state to meet with young agents, and met with lawmakers during advocacy events in Albany and Washington, D.C.

Our Annual Meeting was held at the Milleridge Inn where we hosted a "free" for all members breakfast meeting.

The topic of our meeting was "Protect Against E&O Claims After the Next Catastrophic Event"

Featured speakers were the  Big "I" legal specialists Jim Keidel & Chris Weldon of Keidel, Weldon & Cunningham, LLP.

They did a outstanding job discussing real world situations that Agents experienced after Super Storm Sandy.

We had a great turnout from member agents and Company representatives.

JUNE 2013★ New York was one of over a dozen states impacted by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. Sandy caused $18.75 billion in insured property losses, excluding flood insurance claims covered by the federal flood insurance program, according to estimates from ISO’s PCS unit as of January 18, 2013. This would make Sandy the third most costly U.S. hurricane, after hurricanes Katrina and Andrew.★ At $9.6 billion, New York suffered the largest private insurance losses from Sandy, followed by New Jersey with $6.3 billion, according to ISO.★ New York was one of 14 states impacted by Hurricane Irene in August, 2011. Irene impacted a total of 14 states, causing a total of $4.3 billion in insured property damage, not including flood losses covered under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), according to ISO. The NFIP puts its claims payouts from Irene at $1.3 billion (in all states).★ Three of the costliest hurricanes to hit the U.S., based on insured property losses, caused damage in New York: Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Frances, both in 2004, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. (See chart below.)★ The 1938 Great New England Hurricane of 1938 was one of the costliest storms to hit the area. The hurricane, which made landfall as a Category 3 storm during high tide along Long Island, New York and the Connecticut coast, caused extensive damage to those states as well as to Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The storm caused a total of 600 deaths, 1,700 injuries and over $400 million in damages, according to the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. An analysis by Karen Clark and Company estimates that the storm would have caused $35 billion in insurance damages had it occurred under present conditions.★ Standard homeowners policies typically do not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is covered by the National Flood Insurance Program. There were 164,203 flood insurance policies in force in New York as of September 30, 2011, up one percent from the previous year.★ The insured value of properties in coastal areas of New York totaled $2.9 trillion in 2013, accounting for 62 percent of the state’s total insured property exposure, according to an analysis by AIR Worldwide.★ The population in New York’s coastal areas increased by 15.4 percent from 10.6 million in 1960 to 12.2 million in 2008, according to a 2010 U.S. Census study, which also reports that two of the most intense U.S. hurricanes since 1960 affected coastal counties in New York: Hurricane Donna in1960 and Hurricane Gloria in 1985.

★ New York has a residual market plan that acts as a market of last resort for residential and commercial property insurance in the state.★ The New York Property Insurance Underwriting Association (NYPIUA) was formed in 1968 after passage by Congress of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968. This legislation made federal riot reinsurance available to those states that instituted such property insurance pools.★ Exposure to loss under NYPIUA more than doubled from $5.6 billion in 1990 to $14.2 billion in 2010, even as the plan’s policy count went down. The plan’s total policy count (habitational and commercial) was 58,950 in 2010, compared with 73,805 total policies in 1990.The plan had 58,552 policies with an exposure of $14.4 billion in fiscal year 2011.

U.S. consumers are turning to digital sources for insurance quotes and other information, but still prefer personal contact with agents when purchasing insurance products, according to an Accenture survey of more than 4,000 U.S. automobile and home insurance customers. Major findings include:

Nearly three-quarters (76 percent) of consumers express a preference for setting up and paying for their auto and home insurance policies in person with an agent, and more than half (58 percent) indicate a preference for doing so via the Web.

When asked where they prefer to obtain quotes, 43 percent of respondents choose websites, while 26 percent choose over the phone and 26 percent in person. A much smaller percentage (four percent) chooses mobile applications.

Almost three-quarters (72 percent) of respondents also express a preference for getting information about products and prices from an insurer's website. Exclusive insurance agents rank third with 56 percent of respondents, behind friends and family, cited by 61 percent of respondents. Search engines and aggregators rank fourth and fifth at 55 and 54 percent with respondents, respectively.

"In defining their distribution strategies, insurers must recognize that consumers are becoming more diversified in their channel preferences at different stages of the buying process," said Erik J. Sandquist, a managing director in Accenture Property and Casualty Insurance Services. "Direct insurers continue to gain share as consumers grow increasingly comfortable buying policies online. This means that insurers with an agency distribution model must adapt to customers' changing preferences and integrate their agent networks with digital, mobile, and social media capabilities." Age is not a consistent predictor of channel preference Also according to the survey:

Only 37 percent of respondents aged 18 to 24 say they prefer to obtain a quote via a website, compared to 53 percent aged 25 to 44 and 41 percent aged 45 to 64. However, 10 percent of the respondents aged 18 to 24 say they prefer to obtain a quote via mobile applications, compared to five percent aged 25 to 44 and one percent aged 45 to 64.

Nearly one-third (32 percent) of respondents aged 18 to 24 say  they prefer to obtain a quote in person; only the oldest respondents (aged 65 to 74) are more likely to prefer obtaining a quote in person (39 percent).

More than two-thirds (68 percent) of respondents aged 18 to 24 say  they would be willing to pay more for personalized advice when purchasing auto or home insurance policy, compared to 27 percent of those aged 45 to 64 and just 16 percent of those aged 65 to 74. 

"Much has been written about young consumers - with their strong propensity for Internet, social media and mobile - fundamentally changing insurance distribution," said Sandquist. "Our survey reveals that many young consumers desire personalized advice and are willing to pay more for it - and a significant percentage prefers to obtain their quotes face-to-face. There are many demographic, psychographic, lifestyle and other factors which can account for differences in how customers would like to be treated. Some customers make decisions almost exclusively on price while others seek the best advice available, and this is not consistent by age groups. More sophisticated digital marketing, customer segmentation and analytics are needed to attract customers and deliver more personalized and relevant products and experiences." Insurers have opportunity to build customer loyalty and establish differentiation  Among the survey's other findings:

One-quarter (26 percent) of respondents either do not plan to renew their auto or home insurance policy with their current insurers or plan to look at other insurers' offerings.

Nearly half (46 percent) of insurance customers think that the products and services offered by different insurers are essentially "all the same."

More than one-third (38 percent) of consumers are willing to pay for personalized advice about the insurance that is best for them - and, of that group, more than half (56 percent) are willing to pay at least 10 percent more.

"Our survey research reveals a significant opportunity for insurers to grow market share as many customers plan to shop around when renewing their policies. Price remains the most important buying factor which will continue to put pressure on insurers to improve their cost structures. At the same time, our research reveals that a carrier's distribution model can be a strong differentiator, given the relative importance of factors such as interaction channel, advice

and speed," said Sandquist. MethodologyAccenture conducted a quantitative online consumer survey of 4,067 individuals in the United States, with 2031 answering the questionnaire regarding auto insurance and 2036 answering regarding home insurance. Samples were representative of gender, age, and income as well as regions.
