Slinged and ready to go, the heli-copter lifts away from behind theCopper Cliff concentrator.

Long a familiar landmark to Sudbury residents, the trio of smelterchimneys will puff no more. They were retired from service inAugust when the 1,250-foot superstack came on stream, and lastmonth Custodis Chimney Co. completed capping all three.

The stacks are capped with 3/4-inch plywood laid on top ofwooden cross-members and covered with roofing paper. Stainlesssteel flashing is placed around the edge of each stack. The capsrest on steel joists, weighing 400 to 800 pounds. Because there areno internal hoists inside the small stack, getting these to the topposed a problem which Custodis solved by chartering a helicopterfor a day.

The chopper lifted 31 joists, seven for the 27 feet 10 inchdiameter Orford stack, 11 for the 44-foot diameter concrete copperstack, and 13 for the 48-foot diameter brick nickel stack. Pre-planning, such as laying the joists on the ground in the exact orderthey were to go on each stack, meant the mission was completedwithout a hitch.

While Custodis' eight-man crew handled the complete job,one of inco's construction coordinators, Wayne Taylor, was super-vising the project. "Something like this is really a major under-taking," he said of the helicopter lift, "but it turned out to berelatively simple with no problems at all."

Asked why the stacks needed to be capped, Wayne explainedthat our extremes of weather and temperature would play havocwith the unprotected brick and concrete construction of the stacks.

in their day, these stacks held a number of notable distinctions.The Orford stack helped usher in the transfer of the Orford sepa-ration process from Port Colborne to Copper Cliff in 1930, whilethe 500-foot high copper and nickel circuit chimneys were long thehighest stacks in the old British Empire. But advances in environ-mental control finally overcame them. The superstack replaces allthree and does a better job of ensuring that the quality of air in theSudbury area is better than any other industrial community inCanada.

Removing the ore from rico'smines has become more efficientand safer since the introductionof mechanized equipment under-ground in 1966. Inco's OntarioDivision now boasts of over 400machines which, to the casualvisitor, never seem to stop. Butit's thanks to the tatents andskills of people, including the 30experienced garage mechanicsin the central repair depot, thatthe machines stay running andthe muck keeps moving.

Because drill jumbos or load-haul-dump machines are so ex-pensive to purchase, they mustbe kept operatii-ig in order toearn their keep. Good main-tenarice is a must because break-downs are a costly inconven-ience, both in terms of produc-

tion downtime and under-utiliza-tion of an expensive tool.

The central repair depot workshand-in-hand with the under-ground garages at each mine,where routine day-to-day pre-ventive maintenance is handled.When a human being becomessick, doctors diagnose his symp-toms to determine his illness.Similarly, the mechanics knowhow to detect a machine's signalswhen it is approaching a break-down. Most obvious of theseoccurs when an engine beginsto lose horsepower. When anengine or part begins to mal-function, it's removed immedi-ately and sent to surface foroverhaul.

Until recently, engines and ac-cessories were returned to their

suppliers who performed theoverhaul work under contract.But a study done by the minesand maintenance departmentspointed to possible substantialsavings if Inco did its own work.This proposal was partly basedon the company's considerableexperience with in-house over-hauls of open pit vehicles. Sav-ings of almost 50 per cent havebeen realized already on somecategories of repairs and in allcases nco has been able to doit cheaper than the jobbers orsuppliers.

The central repair depot start-ed as a pilot project last year,swinging into full operation inthe summer. The depot repairsalmost every corriponent at-tached to underground machines

Engines are the repair centre'sbiggest job and five differentkinds of engines are repaired:4 cylinder diesels from Jarcosand Unimogs; 78 hp. straight 6sfrom ST2 load-haul-dumps anddrill jumbos; 145 hp. V6s fromST4s; 195 hp. V8s from ST5s, and222 hp. V10s from ST8s. Whenan engine enters the shop, it isdisassembled and steam cleanedto remove grease, carbon andother foreign matter. Steamcleaning will be replaced by anew bath cleaning unit soon tobe installed, Individual partssuch as cylinders, fuel pumps,valves, starters and crankshaftsare also cleaned and recondi-tioned or replaced.

Three engines are recondi-tioned and built up each week.Before shipment to the Northmine warehouse, where all spare

diesel engines are currently held,each engine is run for eighthours on the test stand anddynamometer. By varying speeds,false loads can be put on theengine to check its performanceand the quality of the overhaul.Two or three transmissions andeight to 10 differentials pluseight torque-converters are alsorepaired each month and heldfor shipment in the depot's ownwarehouse.

Other jobs include overhaul-ing the air compressors whichoperate brakes and starters on allunderground machines; and hy-draulic and pneumatic valves, Airreceivers, the bottles which storethe air for starting and for brakesystems, get a lot of abuseunderground. Straightening themis a simple chore, using a smallhydraulic jack. Forty-five differ-ent types of cylinders, such asthose used to raise and lowerscoopbuckets or drill booms, arereconditioned for the Frood-Stobie complex. Other mines re-pair cylinders in their own localshops.

a unique piece of equipment: ahydraulic test bench. An equiv3lent unit costs $17,000, butGeorge and Alex Dure, a 1stclass garage mechanic, designedand built the one used by inco,it can test every item in a hydraulic system, such as highpressure pumps or steering sys-tems, and make them performthe functions they would on anoperating machine.

"An ounce of prevention isworth a pound of cure," mightwell be the repair centre's motto.Every month maintenance andmine foremen, and their vehicleinspectors, receive training on aspecific subject, such as hy-draulic systems or cylinder main-tenance. When they return totheir own mines, they pass thisinformation along to fellow em-ployees.

Ray St. Pierre, depot generalforeman, said that this programhas been running for only threemonths, but that positive resultsare already being noticed. "Thedrivers and operators in themines are becoming more knowl-edgeable about the problems

created through improper oper-ating techniques, and we main-

tenance people are learningabout their problems. it's a two-way street," he said.

Besides the training, the centrehas started to write formalmanuals for operators and me-chanics on the various kinds ofmechanized equipment. Threespecialists Gerald Heinz,George Friel and Ed Schmidt -produce the manuals. They visitthe mines regularly to follow upon repairs, assess results of train-ing, and suggest modifications toequipment consistently causingdowntime and production delays.When feasible, these suggestions

become standard overhaul pro-cedures, thereby improving thebreed of equipment in the handsof working miners.

Mining the Sudbury ores haschanged a lot since the day ofthe pick and shovel. For ncoto succeed it must compete ef-fectively with other companies.This means efficiency is the aimwhen mining our low grade sul-phide ores. And one of the bestways of achieving that goal isthrough teamwork between theminers in the stopes and thosebehind-the-scenes, like the menof the central repair depot.

George Shepherd and Alex Dure share the credit for this hydraulic testunit. George's hand is on the wheel which tests orbital valves for ST-series vehicles, whIle Alex is testing a main control valve from an 5T2.

Eight hours on the test stand and dynamometer will determine if this8 cylinder engine meets company quality standards.

Despite high winds and generallyinclement weather, the Port Col-borne nickel refinery golf teamemerged triumphant over teamsfrom Copper Cliff and Torontoin the inauguraF event for thePresident's trophy. This beauti-ful new trophy, donated by On-tario Division President, JohnMcCreedy, will be up for annualcompetition among the threesections of the Ontario Division.

Designed by inco graphic artistOrest Andrews, the trophy fea-tures an attractive golf scenecarved in wood by Creighton'sCharles Paxy and framed in stain-less steel. A polished piece ofSudbury ore mounted upright onthe base completes the hand-some trophy.

Don Ripley of Copper Cliffand Don Forest of Toronto ledthe parade with identical scoresof 79. However, using theirhome course to advantage andplaying steady golf, the Portteam was able to gradually buildup a commanding lead.

Highlight of the day was ahole-in-one scored on the par 3,

165 yard fourth hole by DougJamieson of Toronto. Accordingto the eye-witness testimony ofMerle Noyes, it was a perfect 7iron shot, hooking in toward thepin and gentFy nestting into thecup. True to the Rules of theRoyal and Ancient, Doug setthem up for the house during thehappy hour prior to dinner.

Charles Ott performed theduties of M.C. for the presenta-tion of awards following a steakdinner. Each player received aprize of his choice from a collec-tion which included four sportbags, four flashing safety lightsand four travel alarm clocks.

In the absence of john Mc-Creedy, Bob Browne, manager ofthe Port Colborne refinery, pre-sented the trophy to the winningteam. Enciuded in his remarkswas a warm welcome to all thegolfers and he expressed hishappiness in playing host to thetournament. The event, con-vened by Les Lewis, was deemeda decided success by the playerswho complimented the organizerfor his work.

REFINERIES'OPEN HOUSERefinery employees, their fami-lies and friends in Port Colborneand Copper Cliff enioyed arare treat when all three plantsopened their doors to show hownickel and copper products aremade. Termed an instant suc-cess on the basis of employees'comments, the Port Colbornenickel refinery hosted over 2,000visitors on three consecutiveweekends, the new Copper Cliffnickel refinery entertained about500 guests and over 1,600 tookthe opportunity to tour the cop-per refinery.

Recreation Club illustrated theprocess by which the fluid bednickel oxide from Copper Cliffis treated to produce nickelcathodes, which are sheared andpacked to our customers' speci-fications. The display providedexamples for Assistant to theManager Charlie Ott's briefing toeach tour group.

Port's tour included a visitto the anode department whereone of the oil-fired reverberatoryfurnaces was tapping the moltenanode metal into 500-poundanodes on a mechanized castingwheel. Next stop was the Foun-dry Additives Plant and the new-ly completed "S" Nickel Roundsfacility, both subjects of recentTriangle stories. The south tank-house and the shearing depart-ment, where guests were fasci-nated by the various forms ofnickel shipped, completed thetour.

Copper Cliff refineriesFinal installation and testing of

equipment is underway still atthe new Copper Cliff nickel re-finery, scheduled to start up nextyear. Manager Chris Dunkleymet most of the visitors and pro-vided a 15-minute talk usingflow diagrams to explain theplant's processes and its prod-ucts, nickel pellets and nickelpowder.

Inside the plant, which is larg-er than it appears from outside,

hundreds of complicated pipingcircuits and miles of power andcontrol wiring are complementedby the spacious access areas andbright working environment. Thehighly-automated plant will usetwo brand-new Inco-developedtechniques, visitors were told.One is the use of the top-blownrotary convertor for nonferroussmelting, and the other is theuse of the Inco Pressure Car-bonyl process for the recoveryof pure nickel from a varietyof nickel-bearing feed materials.The Inco tourists got a goodlook at the two 50-ton conver-tors, and one group saw the first(empty) rotation of one of thethree reactors.

The copper refinery scheduledits open house on its inventoryday so visitors could see samplesof every copper shape the plantproduces, as well as a preciousmetals display which featured asilver bar, gold bar, and samplebottles of platinum, rhodium,osmium, selenium, tellurium andother metals.

The tour route through theplant included the first glimpseof the new Electrowinning plantwhich will treat copper, cobalt,and precious metals extractedfrom the reactors in the newnickel refinery next door.

While there was no castingoccurring on the weekend thetour was held, the visitors wereable to observe the anode fur-naces in operation. Most popu-lar "exhibit", however, appearedto be the stripping gang in actionin the tankhouse. The speedand teamwork these men displayin producing the smooth purecopper starting sheets fascinatedeveryone.

All three plants report thatfavorable comments are rollingin from employees and theirwives and there's little doubtthat the enthusiastic receptionwith which the open houseswere received guarantees similardays in the future. The nextplant to open its doors will beClarabelle mill later this month.

On call to fight fires at any time,Inco's volunteer plant flremenare an enthusiastic lot, many ofthem also serving as volunteerfiremen in their home communi-ties throughout the Sudburydistrict.

It's a demanding task becauseeach man has to be able tooperate any piece of plant fireapparatus, as well as have thememory to name and locate theequipment scattered throughoutthe brigade's protection area.

There are 29 surface plant firebrigades and each year since1946 Inco fire inspector DonBray and his staff have organizeda competition for the pumperand non-pumper crews. 'We geta lot of valuable training out ofthe practices for the competi-tions," he said, "and the boyslearn a lot from the critiques."

Practices for this year's compe-tition began after the vacationshutdown, with the test evolu-tions being run last month.

Six timed evolutions challeng-ed the 16 non-pumper crews toprove their proficiency. One re-quired them to lay down twodifferent sizes of hose line andthen race 320 feet to hit a target.In another, they faced a live oil

fire and had to be decisive onthe method of extinguishing it.

The pumper teams had todeploy their hose on the fly andbe ready to hit a target 170 feetand 300 feet away as soon as thetruck stopped. Another testtimed them hooking up to ahydrant with two lines of hose.

Both types of brigades wereexamined also on rescue tech-niques and breathing apparatus,and their officers were given averbal fire-fighting problem tosolve.

Scoring was calculated using acomplicated timing systemwhereby competing teams werepenalized penalty seconds forerrors or delays in carrying outtheir procedures.Creighton wins

Creighton mine won thepumper contest with a four-second bulge over the secondplace Town of Levack brigade.The firemen's victory completesa sweep for Creighton. The minecomplex won the Parker first aidchampionship and was Inco'stop Ontario division mine rescuesquad. The Creighton firemenplan to celebrate their victorywith a Firemen's Ball to be heldat Cabrini Hall on Dec. 9.

Grate the lemon peel, pu sugar, cnnanion,nutmeg, cloves, br rndy, rum and boiling waterin a pan. Heat the mixture, but do not boil. Strainlemon juice into punch bowl, add hot liquidand serve.

8 cups sifted enriched flour11/2 cups lukewarm milk3 ounces active dry yeast2 cups creamy soft butter2/3 cup granulated sugar1 teaspoon grated lemon peel7 cups seedless raisins1 cup shredded citron2 teaspoons salt1 generous dash rum¼ teaspoon crushed cardammon seed1/4 teaspoon crushed nutmeg

Soften yeast in lukewarm milk. Combine 2/3 cupof milk with 1 cup of flour and softened yeast. Letstand 20-25 minutes; add butter, sugar, condi-ments as well as the remaining milk and flour andmix well. Now gently fold grated lemon peel,raisins and citron into dough. Let rise for 20minutes twice, punching down each time. Formthree ropes; braid and place on grea'ed cookiesheet. Let stand 10 minutes and bake in hotoven (450) up to 11/2 hours. After baking, brushtwice with butter and sprinkle generously withconfectioners' sugar.

Cream the butter and sugar. Beat the eggs to astiff froth and stir in. Add the flour gradually,then the molasses and spices. Dissolve the sodain milk. Strain and mix in the wine and brandyto curdle. Add to the mixture. Stir in the fruit andbake in a moderate oven for 3 hours.

1 11-ounce package of mixed fruitcup of brown sugarcup raisins, light and dark

1 orange or lemon, sliced paper thin,then halved

2 tablespoons lemon juice1 teaspoon whole cloves1 inch stick cinnamon

Inco's Copper Cliff operations usethousands of pounds of lime everymonth. It neutralizes acid and pre-

cipitates solids in process water,before the water is released to theenvironment. Canadian Liquid AirLimited, in Sudbury, manufactures

over 20,000 pounds of acetylene gasevery month. Lime is a by-product of

the process, and a difficult one todispose of. While its use in cases like

lnco's corrects a water condition, inanother it can be a pollutant. A

specially designed truck now trans-ports some 40,000 pounds of limefrom Canadian Liquid Air to Inco

each month.

lnco's Ontario division hosted a groupof Canadian and United States

security analysts last month. Theanalysts, who toured Sudbury district

plants, were briefed by L. E. Grubb,president and chief executive officer.They also heard reports on the com-pany's financial position, marketingoutlook, and production operationsfrom Charles F. Baird, senior vice-

president, Kenneth A. DeLonge, vice-president responsible for marketing,

and John McCreedy, president of thedivision. Here Dieter Schoenefeld

Sudbury may become the filmcapital of the North, followingthe arrival in the district of Clear-water Films, a new Canadianmovie company. The groupspent a week here in Octoberand will return later this monthto shoot further scenes withsnow on the ground.

Sudbury was chosen becausethe script required an industrialbackground, and when Inco'sOntario Division agreed to co-operate and permit use of someof its plants as "locations", thefilmmakers decided to work amining thread into the plot, Anadditional attraction was Conis-ton. The film crew decided bothSudbury and Copper Cliff weretoo large for the impression of asmall mining town they wantedto portray, but found Conistonto be ideal.

A hint of what might be inthe future was the enthusiasm ofone member of the companywho said he wants to return next

year, if he can obtain financing,to film a western.

"Get Back" is the working titlefor the crime thriller which ex-plores the conflict between aman's love for a woman and hisfriendship for her man, Woveninto this love triangle is the storyof the preparation nd executionof a mine payroll robbery. Sudbury recall startsThe first group of recalled em-ployees are back on the job.Most of them have been assignedto vacancies in the smelter or inthe transportation department.

Starting the end of October,Inco began recalling 150 men,in order of seniority. Art Ben-nett, manager of employee rela-tions, advises that plans are thatall of the 625 hourly-rated menthat were laid off earlier thisyear will be recalled.

Because of the recall, activityat the employee office in the

Sudbury Inco Club has increased.Using streamlined proceduresfirst introduced about a year ago,Art said it takes only two days'processing before a man is backat work. One day is used formedicals, and one day for paper-work, taking picture passes, andfor benefits counselling. Sincethe employee relations depart-ment was reorganized lastmonth, the Sudbury office hasassumed all responsibility forthe hiring and processing of alljob applicants, both hourly-ratedand staff.

Port fetes pensioners"B" shift in the anode depart-ment of the Port Colborne nickelrefinery honored two of theirretired workmates, Art Doan andEmile Blondin, at a retirementparty held in the Optimists' Hallin October. Art has 37 years'service, while Emile will joinPorts Quarter Century Club atthis month's meeting.

Many pensioners turned outfor the evening and to watchJack Clarke present the two menwith a mounted miniature anodeplus a well-stocked wallet.

From Russia toPort with loveFor john Koval and Silvio Con-cessi of the Port Colborne re-finery, their recent visit to Russiafor the hockey series has been"their trip of a lifetime," butboth agree they aren't anxiousto return there.

John and Silvio went togetheron the Can Tours excursion. Theywere in the University Hotel atfirst, about 10 miles from thecentre of Moscow, but werelucky enough to get moved tothe Intourist Hotel where thehockey players stayed. In fact,they got Vic Hadfield's roomwhen he left the club. "Youcould really see the pressure theplayers were under," noted Sil-vio.

Some of the Russian peopleare very cold but others werepleasant and polite, going out of

their way to he friendly, the twosaid. There were plenty of policeand milItary personnel in evid-ence. Customs and immigrationwere not a problem either enter-ing or leaving the country.

As far as the lncoites wereconcerned, there were no prob-lems. You could leave the hotel,hire a taxi and go anywhere inMoscow or use the beautifulsubway and shop in any store aslong as you had the rubles. Longline-ups resulted in most storesand nothing was wrapped. Every-body carries a brief case to puthis purchases in.

"The meals in the city werepassable but much better on theoutskirts," recalls John. How-ever, Silvio says, "The beer wasterrible - the worst ever had."

Divisional foreman, Harry Nara-snek, has retired from CreightonNo. 3 shaft with 36 years' service.

Harry and his wife, the formerBetty Barnicott of Creighton, areplanning trips and intend tospend the colder months inFlorida. They have been livingn Creighton for 37 years and

during that time Harry has beeninvolved in many different sportsactivities.

Their son, Bill, is a shift bossat Copper Cliff North mine. Twograndchildren round out thefamily.

During retirement, Tony Roesliand his wife hope to escape thewinter months by heading southto bask in the sunshine and re-turn north to take in the summerfishing.

The majority of Tony's 25years' service was spent atStobie mine where he workedon a number of different jobs,ending as a tippleman.

He and Mrs. Edna Lacourcierewere married in 1947 at Sudbury.Six children and 19 grandchildrencomplete the family. One oftheir sons, Marcel, has been withnco at Stobie mine for 25 years.

Their daughter, Claudia, is Mrs.Vic Lumbus and her husband isa warehouse clerk at Garsonmine.

Mike Corrigan was born at Kil-Ialoe and was raised on a farmthere. He came to the Sudburyarea in 1936 and was signed-onat Frood mine to work under-ground. After working at theopen pit and Stobie mine, hereturned once again to Froodwhere he put in his remainingshifts as a hoistman.

Callander was the scene of themarriage between Mike andElizabeth Morrissey in 1937.Babysitting their daughter Helen'sthree children provides Mike andhis wife with a great deal ofenjoyment. Helen is married toDon Farquharson, a machinist atCopper Cliff.

"I'm going to relax and reallytake things easy," were JohnSilli's parting words as he leftthe Port Colborne nickel refineryafter 37 years. John was born in1908 in Hungary. He grew upon the family farm until, at age13, he went to work to helpsupport his family until settingout for Canada in 1928.

John's Canadian jobs includedfarm work, laying track for theCPR, construction and makingshoes.

John's experience with theCPR counted when he was hiredat the refinery in 1935. His firstseven years were spent in theyard gang as a trackman. In1942, he moved to the electro-nickel department where he wasa unitman for 27 years, beforemoving to the mastic gang.

Elizabeth Katon, a Czechoslo-vakian by birth but a Canadianby choice, and John were mar-ried in Port Colborne in 1934.They have three children and sixgrandchildren.

"Earl" Basto is looking forwardto his retirement years doing oddjobs about his home in Naughtonand spending more time withhis nine grandchildren.

His career with the companystarted in 1936 at Creightonwhere he has worked continu-ously. During the last 20 yearsof his service, Earl worked in themill as a first class maintenancemechanic.

The Basto's have four childrenand their one son, Jack, is withInco at the iron ore recoveryplant. Two daughters are mar-ried to Inco men: Miriam is Mrs.Don Laframboise and her hus-band is a mechanical foremanat the Copper Cliff smelter;Helen is married to Oiva Koskiwho is employed at CreightonNo. 5 shaft.

Diamond drilling was a trade thatAuguste Leclerc was well-trainedin before joining the company.During his pre-Inco days he wasa diamond driller at Norandamines for 12 years and this wasthe job he did for a good por-tion of the 25 years he spent atboth Creighton and Frood mines.Auguste worked his last shift atFrood as a powderman.

It was while he was workingin Rouyn that he met and mar-ried Lucille de Villiers in 1937.Auguste and his wife are theparents of three children andgrandparents of three. Their onlyson, Jacques, is a surface haulagetruck driver at the Clarabelleopen pit.

Del and Gladys Lachance keeptheir truck-camper packed andwhen they feel like travelling,hunting or fishing, they just "pickup and go".

All of Del's 39 years servicewas spent at Creighton No. 3shaft where he did various jobsunderground. Upon retirementhe was a blasting boss. Duringthe War he enlisted with theRoyal Canadian Engineers andwas in the service prom 1942 to1947.

He and Gladys Tessier weremarried in 1946 at Sudbury andtheir family is made up of twochildren and two grandchildren.Ray McPhail, of the metallurgicaldepartment at Copper Cliff, ismarried to their daughter,Dorothy.

Now that he is a marl of leisure,Bill Davidge will have plenty oftime to devote to his beautifulflower gardens. At present he ishybridizing daylillies and raisingover 100 varieties of Iris.

Bill was born in Toronto 65years ago. His first job was mar-ket gardening in Cooksville be-fore returning to Toronto andapprenticing as a bricklayer.When the depression set in,Bill returned to market garden-ing in Norval near Brampton.

While playing hockey, he wasinjured and a Norval girl, ReesHunter, consoled his woundedego. They were married in 1927in Toronto and have four chil-d ren.

In 1941, Bill started in theanode department. Later he be-came a furnaceman on the cal-ciners and did practically all thejobs in the sinter building. Whenthis department was curtailed in1950, Bill moved to the shearingdepartment.

A member of the yard depart-ment at the Port Colborne nickelrefinery, Syd Turvey has 35years' service, the last 31 ofwhich were spent as a truckdriver visiting every corner ofthe plant.

Syd was born in England in1910 but came to Canada withhis family in 1922, settling inMontreal. In 1930, he startedsailing the Great Lakes as awheelsman on the canal boatsbefore joining Inco in 1937 inthe anode department.

Jean Pringle of Port Colbornebecame his bride in 1936. Theyhave one son and two grand-sons.

Next year, the couple plan atrip to England to visit relativesand see the British Isles.

Stan Kippen will be dividing histime between the cottage onLake Wahnapitae and his car-pen try shop at home in Sudbury.

Most of Stan's 35 years withInco were spent at Frood mineas a shift boss and a school stopeinstructor, while the last twoyears were spent at Stobie as aconstruction leader.

His first wife, the former AliceGordon, died in 1968 and helater married Mrs. Isobel Burns.They have a total of 11 childrenand 16 grandchildren. Three ofMrs. Kippen's sons are presentlyemployed with the company.They are: Austin Burns, a me-chanic at Stobie No. 7 shaft;Alex, of the accounting depart-ment at Copper Cliff; and Bob,an electrician at Stobie mine.

Jack Campbell, who was bornin Woodstock, joined Inco in1935 at Creighton mine. After12 years at Creighton he brokehis service for less than a yearand returned to the electricaldepartment at Copper Cliff. Jackhas been at the Clarabelle openpit and finally the copper re-finery, where he retired as a sec-ond class maintenance electri-cian.

Jack's first wife, whose maidenname was Grace McLeod, diedin 1964. He has three sons andsix grandchildren. Jack and Mrs.Mabel Thompson were marriedat Sudbury in 1967. Many localwomen will remember the newMrs. Campbell as owner andmillinery designer of the Re-gency Hat Shop.

Two trips are on the planningbooks for the Campbells; theywill travel south to Florida afterChristmas and leave for westernCanada next spring.

IProbably the most familiar facein the Port Colborne nickel re-finery has disappeared with theretirement of Bob Morrison.

Born in Parry Sound in 1911,Bob headed south and started apromising hockey career withToronto Marlborough Juniors.During a recruiting drive in 1933,the Port Colborne Sailors per-suaded Bob to transfer to Portfor the hockey season. Bob wasa spectacular skater and playedmany memorable games as adefenceman before he retired in1939. As part of his recruitment,a job was promised with a localindustry and Bob joined Inco in1933 on the box floor of theelectrolytic refinery. He trans-ferred to the storehouse and wasappointed assistant timekeeperto Frank °Doc" Chalmers in1941. When 'Doc" retired in1944, Bob succeeded him.

Mary Andrews a Port Col-borne girl, became his bride in1936. They have a cottage onGeorgian Bay where they planto spend a lot of time.

Blacksmiths are usually big,rugged individuals and FrancisO'Connor, known as Tiny, isno exception. During the '30s hewas a blacksmith in the farmingdistrict of Dunray, Manitoba. Hisknowledge of blacksmithing en-abled him to join Inco in 1942at Creighton No. 3 shaft. Tinylater transferred undergroundwhere he did an assortment ofjobs, the most recent being ashute blaster at Creighton's No.6 shaft.

While in Dunray he marriedClaudine Morissette and theyhave a family of seven childrenand 10 grandchildren. Their son,Doug, is a driller at Colemanmine and daughter, Kathleen, ismarried to Claude St. Jean, adriller at Frood mine.

Thirty-seven years of hearing thesame ring from the cagetenderto the 1800 level became a dailyroutine for Art Lalonde duringhis years with Inco. This wasthe level that he reported to atboth Frood and Stobie mines,with the exception of a fewweeks while on vacation relief.Since 1958 Art has been a trolleymotorman at Stobie mine.

Zita Lalonde of Sudbury mar-ried Art in 1938 and their threesons and four daughters havepresented them with 14 grand-children.

Remodelling his home andspending time at the cottage onthe Rapid River are keeping Artbusy.

Svonti Finnila's service recordof 46 years is one that not manywill surpass. He started at thewelding shop in Copper Cliffat 16 earning 44c an hour. Onretirement he was a welder inthat same shop.

Svonti is a native of CopperCliff and he married Mrs. IdaKalliainen in 1950 at Sudbury.Their one son and 11 grand-children live next door to themon Highway 69 South.

The Finnilas derive great en-joyment from their cottage onKey Harbour, but they also ex-pect to do some travelling acrossCanada in the next few years.

From early spring until snowfalls, Fred Donley plans onspending every available momentat his cottage on Georgian Baynear Britt. Not only is this wherehe can hunt and fish, but it isalso the meeting place for histhree children and four grand-children.

During Fred's pre-Inco days,he sailed the Great Lakes as afireman and during the War wasemployed at Nobel. In 1947 hewas hired to work at the copperrefinery and was a dust controlman there.

Fred married the former Flo-rence Lamondin in her home-town of Britt in 1939.

Stope leader Joe Mason has worked at Levackmine since 1946. Both Joe and his wife, Marion,are very active in the community: he is involvedwith Camp Manitou and the Voyageur trips, whileshe has taught at Parkridge School for 11 years.Their family is Geoffrey, 19, Frank, and Dorothy, 17.Joe has always been fond of the outdoors andwhen his children were old enough he taught themhow to paddle a canoe, and this is still a pastimewhich they all enjoy.

Midnight November 30th is the last time you can use yourold metal badge. If you still have one then, plant securityguards will give you one week to exchange your badge fora new picture pass. Letters are being sent to local stores,banks, and the Chamber of Commerce advising them thatall Inco employees now carry a personal picture identificationwith a sample of their signature. All plant areas have nowbeen canvassed to give hourly-rate employees an opportu-nity to obtain a photo pass, but if for some reason you stilldon't have one, you can apply to the employment office inthe Sudbury Inco Club. It is open Monday to Friday from8 a.m. to 5 p.m. including noon hours, and until 7 p.m. thefirst Tuesday of every month.
