Lufthansa Technik develops process for safe cabin installations in CFC planes

Lufthansa Technik has developed methods for load transmission into carbon fiber com-posites (CFC) aircraft fuselage structures for VIP customer aircraft, as part of the “Fiber Force” research project, started in 2010, working together with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Technical University of Darmstadt. Within the project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWI), it has now been possible to define the maximal load on the floor panels for the first time, and to develop highly ef-ficient connectors, known as “floorpanel hardpoints”. These components, comparable to inserts, are small enough to fit into the palm of the hand and can be individually fitted to the cabin floor by gluing them to the floorpanels. They facilitate the flexible fixing of special cabin fittings such as cupboards, tables and partition walls in the aircraft cabin with a maximal load of up to 3,000 newtons.

According to Mark Hood, PPG global market director for general aviation transparen-cies, PPG is under contract with Dassault Aviation to provide production and spare windshields and side cockpit windows, which are the largest for a Falcon jet. “Dassault Aviation wanted curved glass transparencies having the lightest weight possible, and our unique bending and materials expertise enabled us to propose designs exceeding their expectations,” Hood said.

GE Aviation news from NBAA

Boeing will adjust the production rate for the 747-8 program from 1.75 airplanes to 1.5 airplanes per month through 2015 because of lower market demand for large passenger and freighter air-planes. “This production adjustment better aligns us with near-term demand while stabilizing our production flow, and better positions the program to offer the 747-8s compelling economics and performance when the market recovers,” said Eric Lindblad,

vice president and general manager, 747 Program, Boeing Com-mercial Airplanes. “Although we are making a small adjustment to our production rate, it doesn’t change our confidence in the 747-8 or our commitment to the program.” The company expects long-term average growth in the air cargo market to begin returning in 2014, and forecasts global demand for 760 large airplanes (such as the 747-8) over the next 20 years, valued at $280bn.

The company is also evaluating investments in complementary niches including, but not limited to, cargo operations, Part 121 com-mercial aircraft charter operations, main-tenance operations, high-end concierge services, aircraft sales operations and other opportunistic investments.

The company generated an operating profit of €270.5m (1-9/2012: €278.0m) with an op-erating margin of 9.7% (1-9/2012: 11.3%). Net income amounted to €166.3m after €173.1m in the equivalent period last year. “With the results achieved over the last nine months, MTU is on track to reach its 2013 targets,” said Egon Behle, CEO of MTU Aero Engines AG. “The figures reflect the forecast that we gave in July and which we confirm today.” MTU expects revenues of around €3.7bn for the whole year, after €3,378.6m in 2012.

B/E Aerospace reported third quarter 2013 revenues of $888.1m, an increase of $121.4m, or 15.8%, as compared with the prior year period. Third quarter 2013 oper-ating earnings were $160.1m, an increase of 19.2%, and operating margin of 18.0% increased 50 basis points as compared to the prior year period. Acquisition, integra-tion and transaction (AIT) costs in the third quarter were approximately $6.9m, in-cluding expenses associated with the Blue Dot Energy Services (Blue Dot) acquisition. Alaska Air Group reports record third quarter 2013 results

Alaska Air Group reported third quarter 2013 GAAP net income of $289m compared to $163m in the third quarter of 2012. Excluding the impact of mark-to-market fuel hedge adjustments of $20m and a one-time special revenue item of $192m ($120m after tax) that primarily resulted from the application of new accounting rules associated with the modified affinity card agreement, the company reported record adjusted net income of $157m compared to adjusted net income of $150m in 2012.

Delta Air Lines announces September quarter profit

Delta reported that net profit for the September 2013 quarter was $1.2bn, excluding spe-cial items. This result is a $444m improvement year-over-year. Including $157m in special items, Delta’s GAAP net income was $1.4bn. The company began returning capital to shareholders, with $100m in share repurchases and $51m in dividend payments. Sep-tember quarter results include $249m of profit sharing expense in recognition of Delta employees’ contributions to the company’s financial performance. Finnair lowers 2013 financial guidance

Finnair’s turnover decreased slightly in the third quarter of the year from the correspond-ing period in 2012 and totalled €637m. Turnover was affected especially by the year-on-year decline in euro-denominated revenue, driven by the weak yen. Demand for air traffic developed well, but not enough to compensate the decrease in unit revenues, which was reflected both in turnover and in operating profit. As the third quarter is seasonally Finnair’s strongest, the operational result of €38.4m was disappointing. The bright spot during the period was the continued decline in costs: airline unit costs excluding fuel decreased by 6.2% year-on-year. Due to the weakening unit revenue development and the weakened outlook for the rest of the year especially in cargo and leisure traffic, Finnair lowered its financial guidance regarding turnover and operational profit for 2013.

Lufthansa Group refines 2013 forecast

Lufthansa Group reported operating result before restructuring costs and non-recurring ef-fects increased to about €860m in the first nine months of 2013, the operating result, includ-ing non-recurring costs for the Score program and project costs for product improvements, came to €660m for the first nine months (previous year: €907m). Lufthansa Group increased its adjusted operating result by 47% in the first nine months of 2013. Excluding restructuring costs in connec-tion with the Score program (€168m) and project costs for product improvements (€30m), the Group generated an operating profit of about €860m in the period from January to September. This is an increase of around €280m compared with the ad-justed result for the same period last year. The Group succeeded in keeping revenue stable at €22.8bn. Despite a drop in the number of flights, capacity (in seat-kilometres) remained constant, as did the number of passengers. The load factor for flights went up. For the full year 2013, the Company is forecasting an operating profit of €600 to 700m. The restructur-ing and project costs included in this are expected to come to €300m in total. Adjusted for these items, the operating profit is then predicted to be between €900 and 1bn.
