It is said that there are more canals in Birmingham than in Venice. The network of canals that connect Birmingham to Wolverhampton, and stretch back past Selly Oak, were once used for heavy industry. Nowadays they make for scenic walks to and from town. The Selly Oak canal entrance is located opposite the train station and depending on which direction

you walk, it can take you all the way into the city centre or past Bourneville and towards Redditch. When walking from Selly Oak to the City Centre, you will notice that the walls, buildings and bridges are completely covered from top to bottom with graffiti. The walk is visually stunning and if you get there for around sunset, the beauty of the area is amplified heavily.

The Edgbaston Reservoir, built in 1827 by Thomas Telford, is a 70-acre site that attracts people from across Birmingham due to its dynamic range of activities. The site is located in Ladywood and is a large attraction for walkers, joggers and cyclists who enjoy the scenic two-mile circuit that encompasses the reservoir itself. Due to its large car park, scenic settings and picnic tables, it is also an attraction amongst families during the summer. Due to the nature of the site, it supports a large variety of birdlife and wildlife and is normally a popular destination for fishing. Set in a belt of woodland and grassland, the reservoir provides an oasis of natural beauty in such a heavily urban setting. As the reservoir covers such a large area of land it is also open to a range of water sport activities, including The Birmingham Rowing Club, The Midland Sailing Club and a Sea Cadet Centre. Windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and powerboat courses are but a few activities provided by Edgbaston Watersports.
