Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Garrison Elliott’s history as an artist and musician is a smorgasbord ofcreative twists and turns. His newly-released “I’ve Got My Fingers Crossed”, and “Letters NeverSent” are brief glimpses into an extraordinary life.

Elliott’s childhood years were not exactly middle-of-the-road, heartland American. His father,Archie, was a dedicated amateur puppeteer and 2-time president of Puppeteers of America. Asearly as he can remember, Garrison was a full fledged member of the family’s puppet troupe.

But all was not puppets and strings. His mother, a pianist, enrolled him in the ClevelandInstitute of Music, where he studied clarinet, saxophone and flute. By high school, he added yetanother instrument, the bass guitar, playing in a succession of local and regional bands.

Then Garrison headed for California to become a famous musician. Fame wasn’t in the picture sohe returned to his puppeteer roots, signing on with Scollin’s Marionettes of Cleveland.

Even as “I’ve Got My Fingers Crossed” was near completion, Elliott’s original music, that hadbeen sitting on the shelf for years while he produced for others, was calling to be included aspart of Elliott’s debut as an artist. It was during this time that Elliott was also working with EarlKlugh, the legendary jazz guitarist, on his new release, “Naked Guitar”.

As Elliott engineered for Klugh’s project, Earl took a liking to the songs he heard Elliott producingfor himself, and graciously offered to appear as a guest artist on the “I’ve Got My FingersCrossed” CD. SHAWN PHILLIPS $20.00 Sunday 10/12 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Legendary Singer/Songwriter Shawn Phillips live at Nighttown! Playing a veryspecial Solo Show!

Shawn Phillips is one of most fascinating and enigmatic musicians to come out of the early-'70ssinger/songwriter boom. The mere fact that he was a musician as much as a singer andsongwriter made him stand out, and helped him attract a dedicated following.

Phillips was born in 1943 in Fort Worth, TX, the son of best-selling spy novelist Philip Atlee, whomoved the family around the world at various times, including the South Pacific. He got to live inalmost every corner of the globe, including Tahiti, and absorbed the music that surrounded himwherever he was living. He returned to Texas in his teens, with a love for performers like JimmyReed and Ike & TinaTurner. He did a hitch in the Navy, and then went to California, where heplayed around the early-'60s folk circuit.

Phillips made his first record, "Frankie and Johnnie" for Columbia, which he followed with twomore albums, none of which were successful. Phillips went to England, where he performed andwrote songs with Donovan, in a professional relationship somewhat clouded in controversy.(Phillips claimed in interviews during the 1970s that he co-wrote "Season of the Witch," as wellas a major portion of the songs that finally surfaced on the album Sunshine Superman, but onlyever received one co-author credit for "Little Tin Soldier" on the Fairytale album.).

In 1968, with an idea for a trilogy of albums, he recorded a major portion of it in collaborationwith Traffic members Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, and Jim Capaldi. No record company waswilling to commit to such an ambitious body of work, and the material languished for more thantwo years, until Phillips came to A&M Records.

Thus became his A&M debut album, Contribution, which ranged freely between uptempo folk-rock ("Man Hole Covered Wagon") to introspective quasi-classical guitar pieces ("L Ballade"), andworks mixing sitar and acoustic guitar ("Withered Roses"). The album got positive reviews, but itwas when Phillips embarked on his first U.S. tour, in conjunction with his next album, SecondContribution, late in 1971, that he was discovered by much of the press. Critics in the New YorkTimes and other publications displayed unbridled awe at Phillips' prowess on a range ofinstruments, including electric and acoustic six- and 12-string guitars and the sitar, and hissinging range, a full three octaves from baritone to counter-tenor, as well as his songwriting. Writers lavished praise on Phillips for his unusual lyrics, haunting melodies, dauntingmusicianship, and the ambition of his records.

On tour, he was booked into clubs with artists such as comedian Albert Brooks, singer/songwriterWendy Waldman, and Seals & Crofts, and usually worked solo, surrounded by a half-dozenguitars.

Phillips never achieved major stardom, despite his critical accolades. He made nine albums forA&M before moving on to RCA in 1978 for Transcendance, which mixed his guitars with a 60-piece symphony orchestra and members of Herbie Hancock's band.

With close to 20 albums behind him since the mid-'60s, Phillips has a following in America,Europe, and Japan, and he has performed at different world music festivals. His work remainedsufficiently in demand in the 1990s to justify a best-of compilation from A&M.

Saxophonist Supreme from New Orleans leads his Quartet for Two very specialnights at Nighttown!

Donald Harrison is being called one of the most important musicians of the new millennium byCBS Sunday Morning. A list of his accomplishments shows that he has developed into a musicalcategory unto himself. In the classic jazz genre, he is the originator of the Nouveau Swing stylewhich merges acoustic swing with modern R&B, second-line, hip-hop, (New Orleans AfricanAmerican roots culture), and reggae rhythms. His smooth jazz recording, “The Power of Cool”went to the top of Billboard Magazine's Smooth Jazz and R&B charts and is considered a classic. His ground-breaking recording, “Indian Blues” captured the essence of Mardi Gras Indian culturewithin a jazz context.

His latest New Orleans recording, “The New Sounds of Mardi Gras” updates New Orleans music. Itputs the sounds of Mardi Gras into Hip-hop, R&B, and Funk. It also marks Harrison's debut as arapper. The great singer-pianist Dr. John says of the recording, “This is the freshest thing tocome out of New Orleans in years. You deserve an award for this one”

Harrison's newest Classic Jazz recording, “Heroes” is now available. The CD is a trio recordingwith the great bass innovator Ron Carter and drum innovator Billy Cobham. The CD also featuresthree bonus tracks with his young working band.

In April he released “Freestyle” with his young working band. It showcases his Nouveau Swing inan even funkier presentation. In September Half-Note Records will release his second triorecording with Ron Carter and Billy Cobham which was recorded live at the Blue Note NYC.Presently, Harrison is recording yet another CD titled, “3D” The recording is a three CD set whichfeatures a different genre of music on each disc. The genres are Classic Jazz, R&B-SmoothJazz, and Hip-hop. This exciting project will showcase Harrison's ability to produce, write, sing, rap, and play many instruments.

He is one of the few musicians who can play it all - from traditional New Orleans, to swing, bop,post-bop, modern, smooth, avant-garde, and beyond. Yet, Harrison has developed his ownpersonal style that traverses and synthesizes all these mediums with great success. Throughtalent and perseverance, Harrison has developed into one of the most significant artist to emergein the last twenty years.

Thursday 10/30 7:00 pm Buy Tickets 9:00 pm Buy Tickets

Legendary vocalist, pianist, & Nat's Brother, with his Grammy NominatedQuartet! Featuring: Freddy Cole-vocals & piano, Randy Napoleon-guitar, EliasBailey-acoustic bass, & TBD-drums.

Freddy Cole, the legacy of his brother Nat Cole, will stir up memories that will never be forgotten. Now in his 50th year of performing, this great singer and pianist has developed a huge followingof his own. The instantly recognizable Cole voice and a veteran quartet, play the classics as wellas new compositions and interpretations from a huge repertoire.

Lionel Frederick Cole was the youngest of five children. His three elder brothers, Eddie, Ike andNat (12 years Freddy’s senior) were all musicians. “Music was all around me.” In the Chicagohome of his youth, visitors included Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton. Colemoved to New York in 1951, where he studied at the Juillard School of Music and found himselfprofoundly influenced by John Lewis, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson. He received a master’sdegree from the New England Conservatory of Music and then spent several months on the roadas a member of an Earl Bostic band that also included Johnny Coles and Benny Golson.

It was back in New York that Cole successfully laid the groundwork for a career that continues toflourish to this day. Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat Cole. There arecertain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano and sings, and performs live with guitar andupright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emergedfrom the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable andarticulate - are among the most respected in jazz.

A don't miss concert!

The Alto Madness Orchestra was developed by Cole in the early 90's and its continuing popularityis proof of its uniqueness. As Richie explains, "The idea of the Orchestra is the concept andsound of an eighteen-piece big band using only seven instruments, four of which are horns. Notonly does this have the big band ensemble sound, it also allows us plenty of room forimprovisation as if we were in a quartet setting."

MARIA JACOBS - CD RELEASE EVENT$15.00 Sunday 11/02 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Cleveland vocalist celebrates CD release with Stellar Group featuring: MariaJacobs-vocals, Bob Fraser-guitar, Cliff Habian-piano/keys, & Brian Wildman-bass.

Here Comes Winter is the fifth solo project for Maria Jacobs, “…a milestone in the career of MariaJacobs, is easily recommended.” (Scott Yanow) It is the fitting follow-up to Art of the Duo, whereshe is also paired with guitarist Bob Fraser, who joins her on Here Comes Winter. Art of the Duo: “…is most refreshing because her voice is not over-trained and contains just enough grit to giveit a lived-in sound that makes it at once familiar and friendly with a hint of sex and satin…(Michael Bailey, All About Jazz.) Jacobs has been compared to the likes of Madeline Eastman,Maucha Adnet, and Heather Masse, (Jack Goodstein, blogcritics.com.) “Jacobs’ scat singing is theequivalent of textured spun gold…” (Brent Black, criticaljazz.com) Here Comes Winter alsoincludes Brian Wildman or Bob Curry on Bass, Cliff Habian on Keyboard/String Patches, DavidStrieter on Hammond B3/Keyboard and Maria herself plays Keyboard on the title track. Not allduets, but all are sparse arrangements for a “winter in your heart” experience.

“…While the emphasis is on slower tempos with close interplay between the singer and theguitarist, there is a lot of variety to the performances and they always hold on to one’s attention.Whether making high notes sound effortless, displaying quiet passion, or cutting loose like thebest Broadway singer (one could imagine her “Fall In Love Again” being in a show), she is quiteimpressive. But in addition, Maria Jacobs often sings with quiet and restrained passion, soundingquite fetching on some of the more haunting pieces…Here Comes Winter, a milestone in thecareer of Maria Jacobs, is easily recommended.”

JACKIE WASHINGTON$20.00 Tuesday 11/11 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Legendary singer/songwriter Jackie Washington (AKA Jack Landron) live atNighttown! Playing music from his new CD "Curbside Cotillion".

This album is both a return and a debut. The return is of Jackie Washington, Vanguard RecordingSociety artist and one of the most popular performers at Cambridge’s legendary Club 47 in theheyday of the 1960s folk revival. The debut is of Jack Landrón, an Afro-Puerto Rican actor, singer, and songwriter who has appeared in theater, film, and television and written several musicalshows. Both are the same person, born Juan Candido Washington y Landrón, but if this albumbrings back memories for Jackie Washington’s old fans, it will also bring surprises. Washingtonwas known for his onstage wit and charm, and his sensitive reshaping of ballads and songs froma wide range of folk traditions, but not primarily as a songwriter.

This time, Landrón is putting his songs front and center. They are the experiences, observations, and points of view that I have as a result of being a disciple of Pete Seeger, who profoundlytouched me with the idea that life really is a shared experience and people can sing together, wecan have a good time together.

Landrón notes that he had a very different background from most people on the sixties folkscene. “I’m a Puerto Rican black man, and folk music was not something I discovered at Club47. It was part of my daily life and the lives of my family and neighbors. I’d heard gospel musicand R&B hits blared from speakers in the record stores where they sold tickets to those artists’shows. At home we listened to Ramito, Tito Rodríguez, and Los Panchos. I listened to the GrandOle Opry religiously.

“I loved folk music, but I also liked Dean Martin and Bing Crosby. I loved Harry Belafonte, I lovedEartha Kitt, I loved Pearl Bailey.

Landrón enjoyed the Club 47 and the people he was meeting around Harvard Square, but henever really felt at home there, and he found a new direction when he traveled to Mississippi in1964 as part of the Civil Rights movement. Many folksingers went south to sing for rallies, but hechose to stay, joining the movement and helping to form the Free Southern Theater, with whichhe toured as an actor.

Though Landrón never stopped singing and writing, he says he is as surprised as anyone to finda new album coming out in 2012. The catalyst was filmmaker Todd Kwait, who became a fanwhile making a documentary on the Cambridge folk scene, For The Love of The Music: The Club47 Folk Revival. “I discovered that Jack was the big gun at the 47,” Kwait recalls. “So I trackeddown his four Vanguard LPs and interviewed him for the film. And the instant I met him Irealized that he is a one-of-a-kind entertainer and I wanted to record him.”

Kwait assembled a crew of skilled musicians, including the Afro-Puerto Rican percussionist andbandleader Leopoldo Fleming, who is not only a terrific musician but also one of Landrón’sspiritual guides.

Landrón says “I am an actor, and I think in terms of shows. I have always thought that whenpeople pay money for what you do, you should entertain them, you should transport themsomewhere, if only for a moment. So this is a show about what I have seen, and thought, andfelt over the years.”

International Guitar Duo and proteges of Tommy Emmanuel play Nighttown! Featuring: Loren Barrigar (Syracuse, NY) & Mark Mazengarb (New Zealand). With Special Guest opening act guitarist Dan Bankhurst.

“Fresh and Exciting… these guys ROCK!!”Tommy Emmanuel, Australian guitar virtuoso

Loren and Mark first met in 2005 when they spent a few days working with the great TommyEmmanuel at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp. Mark was a college kid, justcompleting his degree in classical guitar at the University of North Carolina; Loren was already aseasoned performer, but it was his first serious look at acoustic guitar. After the workshop, Markvisited Loren and they spent some time picking guitar – and picking each other’s brains.

In 2009 they met again in Nashville at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) convention,an international gathering of hundreds of guitarists. That set the stage for the 2010 CAASconvention where they were on the schedule of performers. Loren and Mark's varied repertoire of original and arranged music consists of stunning guitarduets as well as songs, giving them a wide appeal.

Their music is influenced by Bluegrass, Jazz and Western; their style of guitar playing is largelybuilt upon the thumb-picking techniques pioneered by guitar greats Merle Travis, Chet Atkinsand Jerry Reed, and their songs feature Lorens superb vocals and some beautiful harmoniesfrom Mark.

Barrigar and Mazengarb have toured extensively in both the USA and in Europe, and their fanbase is rapidly expanding. They recorded their first album together the summer of 2011 whichwon a SAMMY (Syracuse Area Music Awards) for Best Album at the Northeast Music IndustryConference, and their second album Onward also won a SAMMY. The title track 'Onward' wonfirst place at the International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA) for Best Instrumental. Their mostrecent album is live from their 2013 tour of Europe

Loren and Marks live performances feature not only their spectacular technical grasp of theguitar, but also their outstanding musicality and ability to be spontaneously creative. Theinteraction between the two musicians is as much a feature of their shows as is the world-classguitar playing that they both display.
