A Special Night of Swing Music with 8 Pc. Blue Lunch & their Special GuestVocalist, Guitarist, & Saxophonist Garrison Elliott, a Cleveland Native now livingin Atlanta, Georgia.

Blue Lunch, Cleveland’s award winning eight piece band has been playing its own brand ofblues/swing/New Orleans R&B/jazz for twenty-seven years throughout Northeast Ohio andbeyond. Blue Lunch’s sixth and latest CD on Wilbert’s Records, “Saxophone Shootout II” hasbeen garnering stellar reviews and airplay on five continents (Antarctica hasn’t been crackedyet). The CD was recorded live at Cleveland’s premiere jazz and blues venue, Nighttown (Ratedone of the top 100 jazz venues in the world by Downbeat magazine), on February 26, 2011before an enthusiastic, packed house.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Garrison Elliott’s history as an artist and musician is a smorgasbord of

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Garrison Elliott’s history as an artist and musician is a smorgasbord ofcreative twists and turns. His newly-released “I’ve Got My Fingers Crossed”, and “Letters NeverSent” are brief glimpses into an extraordinary life.

Elliott’s childhood years were not exactly middle-of-the-road, heartland American. His father,Archie, was a dedicated amateur puppeteer and 2-time president of Puppeteers of America. Asearly as he can remember, Garrison was a full fledged member of the family’s puppet troupe.

But all was not puppets and strings. His mother, a pianist, enrolled him in the ClevelandInstitute of Music, where he studied clarinet, saxophone and flute. By high school, he added yetanother instrument, the bass guitar, playing in a succession of local and regional bands.

Then Garrison headed for California to become a famous musician. Fame wasn’t in the picture sohe returned to his puppeteer roots, signing on with Scollin’s Marionettes of Cleveland.

Next, a five-year stint in Nashville with country rock band, North Fork Western, was followed bytwo years at Berklee College of Music studying Arranging and Composition.

He credits the leader of The Lost and Wandering Blues and Jazz Band with introducing him tomany of the songs on “I’ve Got My Fingers Crossed”, and inspiring him to complete the project.

Even as “I’ve Got My Fingers Crossed” was near completion, Elliott’s original music, that hadbeen sitting on the shelf for years while he produced for others, was calling to be included aspart of Elliott’s debut as an artist. It was during this time that Elliott was also working with EarlKlugh, the legendary jazz guitarist, on his new release, “Naked Guitar”.

As Elliott engineered for Klugh’s project, Earl took a liking to the songs he heard Elliott producingfor himself, and graciously offered to appear as a guest artist on the “I’ve Got My FingersCrossed” CD. He appears on three tracks. As a bonus during this creative period, Klugh’s“Naked Guitar” CD was nominated for a Grammy!

Garrison Elliott is a work in progress, with a story to tell.

Contemporary Jazz piano Master and group return to Nighttown for 2 big nights! Back bypopular demand!

Montreux-reared Bugnon studied at a music conservatory in Paris before coming to America tocontinue at Boston’s famed Berklee School of Music. He spent a lot of time playing not only jazzbut gospel, gigging on that time-honored southern circuit. Upon graduation he moved to NewYork. After spending a year driving taxicabs and teaching French at the Berlitz School, he foundinitial work backing R&B stars such as Patti Austin & James Ingram and Keith Sweat. It wasthrough backing Freddie Jackson that he made the contact at then-new Orpheus Records wherehe recorded his first two CDs Love Season (1989) and Head Over Heels (1991), making hisdeepest first impressions with R&B audiences as a soulful instrumentalist du jour. A switch toSony’s Epic Records family yielded 107 Degrees in the Shade (1991) and This Time Around(1993), upon which time he jumped to RCA Records for Tales from the Bright Side (1995). Fromthere he segued into the four albums he did for Narada Records, an associated label thatspecialized in smooth jazz and new age.

Beyond his recordings, Alex has built a loyal fan base through constant touring on the club andjazz festival circuits. Just last year he passed the great Dizzy Gillespie’s record of playingWashington, D.C.’s Blues Alley for 12 consecutive Thanksgivings with his own lucky 13th visit. That most recent gig found his new music from Going Home receiving quite the warm welcome.“People in their 40s, 50s and 60s that have all of my CDs were raving about the new songs,” hebeams. “At the same time, college students that are more likely to be Radiohead fans werecoming up to me saying, ‘I really dug that ‘Silver Finger’ song, man’ - which was really nice tohear!”

SHAWN PHILLIPS $20.00 Sunday 10/12 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Legendary Singer/Songwriter Shawn Phillips live at Nighttown! Playing a veryspecial Solo Show!

Shawn Phillips is one of most fascinating and enigmatic musicians to come out of the early-'70ssinger/songwriter boom. The mere fact that he was a musician as much as a singer andsongwriter made him stand out, and helped him attract a dedicated following.

Phillips was born in 1943 in Fort Worth, TX, the son of best-selling spy novelist Philip Atlee, whomoved the family around the world at various times, including the South Pacific. He got to live inalmost every corner of the globe, including Tahiti, and absorbed the music that surrounded himwherever he was living. He returned to Texas in his teens, with a love for performers like JimmyReed and Ike & TinaTurner. He did a hitch in the Navy, and then went to California, where heplayed around the early-'60s folk circuit.

Phillips made his first record, "Frankie and Johnnie" for Columbia, which he followed with twomore albums, none of which were successful. Phillips went to England, where he performed andwrote songs with Donovan, in a professional relationship somewhat clouded in controversy.(Phillips claimed in interviews during the 1970s that he co-wrote "Season of the Witch," as wellas a major portion of the songs that finally surfaced on the album Sunshine Superman, but onlyever received one co-author credit for "Little Tin Soldier" on the Fairytale album.).

In 1968, with an idea for a trilogy of albums, he recorded a major portion of it in collaborationwith Traffic members Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, and Jim Capaldi. No record company waswilling to commit to such an ambitious body of work, and the material languished for more thantwo years, until Phillips came to A&M Records.

Thus became his A&M debut album, Contribution, which ranged freely between uptempo folk-rock ("Man Hole Covered Wagon") to introspective quasi-classical guitar pieces ("L Ballade"), andworks mixing sitar and acoustic guitar ("Withered Roses"). The album got positive reviews, but itwas when Phillips embarked on his first U.S. tour, in conjunction with his next album, SecondContribution, late in 1971, that he was discovered by much of the press. Critics in the New YorkTimes and other publications displayed unbridled awe at Phillips' prowess on a range ofinstruments, including electric and acoustic six- and 12-string guitars and the sitar, and hissinging range, a full three octaves from baritone to counter-tenor, as well as his songwriting. Writers lavished praise on Phillips for his unusual lyrics, haunting melodies, dauntingmusicianship, and the ambition of his records.

On tour, he was booked into clubs with artists such as comedian Albert Brooks, singer/songwriterWendy Waldman, and Seals & Crofts, and usually worked solo, surrounded by a half-dozenguitars.

Phillips never achieved major stardom, despite his critical accolades. He made nine albums forA&M before moving on to RCA in 1978 for Transcendance, which mixed his guitars with a 60-piece symphony orchestra and members of Herbie Hancock's band.

With close to 20 albums behind him since the mid-'60s, Phillips has a following in America,Europe, and Japan, and he has performed at different world music festivals. His work remainedsufficiently in demand in the 1990s to justify a best-of compilation from A&M.

Freddy Cole, the legacy of his brother Nat Cole, will stir up memories that will never be forgotten. Now in his 50th year of performing, this great singer and pianist has developed a huge followingof his own. The instantly recognizable Cole voice and a veteran quartet, play the classics as wellas new compositions and interpretations from a huge repertoire.

Lionel Frederick Cole was the youngest of five children. His three elder brothers, Eddie, Ike andNat (12 years Freddy’s senior) were all musicians. “Music was all around me.” In the Chicagohome of his youth, visitors included Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton. Colemoved to New York in 1951, where he studied at the Juillard School of Music and found himselfprofoundly influenced by John Lewis, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson. He received a master’sdegree from the New England Conservatory of Music and then spent several months on the roadas a member of an Earl Bostic band that also included Johnny Coles and Benny Golson.

It was back in New York that Cole successfully laid the groundwork for a career that continues toflourish to this day. Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat Cole. There arecertain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano and sings, and performs live with guitar andupright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emergedfrom the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable andarticulate - are among the most respected in jazz.

A don't miss concert!

MARIA JACOBS CD RELEASE EVENT$15.00 Sunday 11/02 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Cleveland vocalist celebrates CD release with Stellar Group featuring: MariaJacobs-vocals, Bob Fraser-guitar, Cliff Habian-piano/keys, & Brian Wildman-bass.

Here Comes Winter is the fifth solo project for Maria Jacobs, “…a milestone in the career of MariaJacobs, is easily recommended.” (Scott Yanow) It is the fitting follow-up to Art of the Duo, whereshe is also paired with guitarist Bob Fraser, who joins her on Here Comes Winter. Art of the Duo: “…is most refreshing because her voice is not over-trained and contains just enough grit to giveit a lived-in sound that makes it at once familiar and friendly with a hint of sex and satin…(Michael Bailey, All About Jazz.) Jacobs has been compared to the likes of Madeline Eastman,Maucha Adnet, and Heather Masse, (Jack Goodstein, blogcritics.com.) “Jacobs’ scat singing is theequivalent of textured spun gold…” (Brent Black, criticaljazz.com) Here Comes Winter alsoincludes Brian Wildman or Bob Curry on Bass, Cliff Habian on Keyboard/String Patches, DavidStrieter on Hammond B3/Keyboard and Maria herself plays Keyboard on the title track. Not allduets, but all are sparse arrangements for a “winter in your heart” experience.

“…While the emphasis is on slower tempos with close interplay between the singer and theguitarist, there is a lot of variety to the performances and they always hold on to one’s attention.Whether making high notes sound effortless, displaying quiet passion, or cutting loose like thebest Broadway singer (one could imagine her “Fall In Love Again” being in a show), she is quiteimpressive. But in addition, Maria Jacobs often sings with quiet and restrained passion, soundingquite fetching on some of the more haunting pieces…Here Comes Winter, a milestone in thecareer of Maria Jacobs, is easily recommended.”

Founding member of Dire Straits in special Solo Show! Singer/Songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, and pianist in rare US tour.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, David Knopfler grew up in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the North ofEngland. By fourteen, David was performing his own songs in folk clubs and having learnedguitar, piano and drums in his childhood, it's not surprising to find he's mastered many of theinstruments he uses on his recordings. Despite a college degree, he can't recall any otheraspirations beyond composing and playing music. David founded Dire Straits alongside his brother Mark, and recorded three albums, touring thestadium circuit extensively, before resigning three years later to follow his own path ofindependent, singer-songwriter. For more than two decades has faithfully pursued his musicalvision, writing and producing his own music on nine solo CDs to date.

David creates songs of substance. They are by turns deep and captivating, elegant and thoughtprovoking, with clever, gripping lyrics, his exquisite sense of melody blending effortlessly. Moreattentive listeners might even find themselves decoding the frequent buried references Davidincludes. An example is found in "Jericho" (from his 2002 album Wishbones), the words to whichconceal titles of previous albums and songs.

David Knopfler has been fortunate enough to reach a wide audience without compromising hisart. While he's enjoyed the respect and admiration of his musical peers, widespread criticalacclaim, international awards and worldwide chart successes, he's managed, in his own country,Britain, to keep a profile so low as to be nearly invisible. He lives quietly in the Englishcountryside, notching up an impressive list of writing credits.

An understated integrity and honesty define Knopfler in both his work and private life. A familyman and a lifelong member of organizations like Greenpeace, Amnesty International and Adopt aMinefield, David has always made uncompromising life choices. "I don't regard what I do asremotely glamorous. I write and record music because I completely love doing it, despite any socalled "celebrity status" that sometimes comes with the job."

The year 2006 saw the debut of his 10th CD "Songs for the Siren", and in March 2009 hiscollection "Anthology: 1983-2008" was released. 2011 brought the release of David's eleventhsolo album, an acoustic, double CD with eighteen tracks including seven new songs - withguitarist and co-producer Harry Bogdanovs, titled “Acoustic”. In 2013 David released a limitededition acoustic CD recorded live in Erfurt, Germany, titled “Made In Germany”, available for alimited time at shows and on CDBaby.com.

JOHNNY A$20.00 Sunday 11/09 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Master Electric Guitarist from Boston combines Rock, Jazz, Blues, andR&B, for a unique blend with his 4 Piece Band!Playing music from hisbrand new CD "Driven".

Special guest opening act featuring Dynamic Acoustic Guitarist DanBankhurst.

Presented with the support of Roots of American Music (ROAM).

Not very many guitarists have ever had their own Signature model Gibson Guitar. Of course LesPaul and Chet Atkins do... and Johnny A. How good do you have to be to have that happen? Very, Very good.

Johnny's debut album, "Sometime Tuesday Morning" did something an instrumental guitarrecord never does - it became a major hit at radio. Not Jazz, not Blues, not only Rock...instead, athoroughly unique blend of those and other musical styles that create a "pop" sensibility andbroad appeal other guitarists cannot match.

He's gained the admiration of the world's top guitarists from Jeff Beck to BB King and led to amyriad of major appearances including Eric Clapton's Crossroads, the Montreal Jazz Festival andTokyo's Fuji Rock Festival. Johnny is touring behind his fourth album, "Driven" which wasreleased in June 2014 and once again is garnering critical acclaim.

That take-no-prisoners attitude has been ingrained in Johnny A. since he first set foot on a stage, whether as leader of locally-acclaimed Boston acts like Hearts on Fire or in the company ofacclaimed artists like J. Geils frontman Peter Wolf – whose band he anchored for more than sevenyears.

“When I was in my early bands, I sang, but when I was with Peter Wolf, I came down with areally bad bronchial infection and never recovered my voice completely,” he says. “I made aconscious decision at that point to focus on instrumental music. I re-evaluated how I played, redefined my approach completely.”

That new approach won plenty of accolades from outlets like the Boston Phoenix, which dubbedhim “a singular presence on the Boston rock and pop scene, winding jazz, blues, popular tunes, rock, and flourishes of psychedelic improvisation into a tight, passionate ball.”

The success of Sometime Tuesday Morning led to a second release, Get Inside, which broughtforth a radio hit in the form of the title track – and drew the folks at Gibson®, who approachedJohnny to collaborate on a custom guitar, the second best selling signature model in thecompany’s illustrious line of instruments.

Dan BankhurstDan's earliest influences were mostly rooted in blues - Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, and JimiHendrix. As a teenager Dan began to branch out into jazz, George Benson, Joe Pass, and DjangoReinhardt as major influences.

It was about three years ago that Dan heard Chet Atkins play for the first time and he wasimmediately hooked! Dan immersed himself in learning as much as he possibly could aboutChet’s amazing technique.

In the words of Premiere Guitar Magazine, “ Johnny A.'s magic crosses over because, like BillFrisell, he doesn't just play guitar - he plays music.”

JACKIE WASHINGTON$20.00 Tuesday 11/11 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Legendary singer/songwriter Jackie Washington (AKA Jack Landron) live atNighttown! Playing music from his new CD "Curbside Cotillion".

This album is both a return and a debut. The return is of Jackie Washington, Vanguard RecordingSociety artist and one of the most popular performers at Cambridge’s legendary Club 47 in theheyday of the 1960s folk revival. The debut is of Jack Landrón, an Afro-Puerto Rican actor, singer, and songwriter who has appeared in theater, film, and television and written several musicalshows. Both are the same person, born Juan Candido Washington y Landrón, but if this albumbrings back memories for Jackie Washington’s old fans, it will also bring surprises. Washingtonwas known for his onstage wit and charm, and his sensitive reshaping of ballads and songs froma wide range of folk traditions, but not primarily as a songwriter.

This time, Landrón is putting his songs front and center. They are the experiences, observations, and points of view that I have as a result of being a disciple of Pete Seeger, who profoundlytouched me with the idea that life really is a shared experience and people can sing together, wecan have a good time together.

Landrón notes that he had a very different background from most people on the sixties folkscene. “I’m a Puerto Rican black man, and folk music was not something I discovered at Club47. It was part of my daily life and the lives of my family and neighbors. I’d heard gospel musicand R&B hits blared from speakers in the record stores where they sold tickets to those artists’shows. At home we listened to Ramito, Tito Rodríguez, and Los Panchos. I listened to the GrandOle Opry religiously.

“I loved folk music, but I also liked Dean Martin and Bing Crosby. I loved Harry Belafonte, I lovedEartha Kitt, I loved Pearl Bailey.

Landrón enjoyed the Club 47 and the people he was meeting around Harvard Square, but henever really felt at home there, and he found a new direction when he traveled to Mississippi in1964 as part of the Civil Rights movement. Many folksingers went south to sing for rallies, but hechose to stay, joining the movement and helping to form the Free Southern Theater, with whichhe toured as an actor.

Though Landrón never stopped singing and writing, he says he is as surprised as anyone to finda new album coming out in 2012. The catalyst was filmmaker Todd Kwait, who became a fanwhile making a documentary on the Cambridge folk scene, For The Love of The Music: The Club47 Folk Revival. “I discovered that Jack was the big gun at the 47,” Kwait recalls. “So I trackeddown his four Vanguard LPs and interviewed him for the film. And the instant I met him Irealized that he is a one-of-a-kind entertainer and I wanted to record him.”

Kwait assembled a crew of skilled musicians, including the Afro-Puerto Rican percussionist andbandleader Leopoldo Fleming, who is not only a terrific musician but also one of Landrón’sspiritual guides.

Landrón says “I am an actor, and I think in terms of shows. I have always thought that whenpeople pay money for what you do, you should entertain them, you should transport themsomewhere, if only for a moment. So this is a show about what I have seen, and thought, andfelt over the years.”

Featuring: Andrea Beaton-violin, Dick Hensold-bagpipes/whistles, & TysonChen-piano.

This concert of traditional Cape Breton Scottish fiddling and piping will feature Andrea Beaton, with piper Dick Hensold and pianist Tyson Chen. Cape Breton Island, at the Eastern end of the Canadian maritime province of Nova Scotia, wassettled about 200 years ago by some 50,000 Gaelic-speaking Scottish Highlanders. Because ofthe Highlanders’ isolation, both before emigration and after, Cape Breton is believed toauthentically preserve many aspects of 18th-century Highland Scots Gaelic culture, particularlyits music and dance. Although the cultural achievement and legacy of Cape Breton music isinternationally recognized, Cape Breton artists rarely appear in the U.S. Andrea Beaton, “a powerful Cape Breton fiddler, composer and stepdancer”, is one of the mostaccomplished and well-known fiddlers from the newest crop of Cape Breton musicians. Andrea'slively music is characterized by her powerful bow, the drive and swing of her timing and thecrispness of her attack. She learned her tradition from her family. Her father, Kinnon, is one oftoday's most influential Cape Breton fiddlers; her mother, Betty Beaton, is one of the great pianoaccompanists of her generation. Her uncle, Buddy MacMaster, is the most revered fiddler onCape Breton Island, and her cousin, Natalie MacMaster, is an enormously popular entertaineron the fiddle. Her music is at once her own and deeply rooted in the tradition associated with theMabou Coal Mines in Cape Breton. She has released 5 solo CDs, one of which won the 2010 EastCoast Music Association “instrumental recording of the year” award.http://www.andreabeaton.com Appearing with Andrea will be Dick Hensold, playing various bagpipes and whistles. After college, he relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he formed the Jeff Lorber Fusion. Thegroup released their self-titled debut album in 1977, and quickly became one of the mostpopular acts in the jazz fusion scene, due in large part to relentless touring and a string ofartistically daring and commercially successful recordings.

During his teen years he began playing guitar and bass in rock, blues, and fusion bands. At age20, he began playing violin in gospel church settings. These experiences ultimately led him topursue a singular goal to become a versatile jazz musician and composer.

Since then, he has gained respect from critics and players alike, establishing himself as a worldclass jazz violinist and educator. From 2001-2009 Howes became an in-demand violinist on theNew York scene, collaborating with a bevy of top-shelf jazz artists, including Greg Osby, D.D.Jackson, Frank Vignola, Joel Harrison, Dafnis Prieto, Dave Samuels, Spyro Gyra, and a 4-year chairin Bill Evans’ “Soulgrass” band.

Christian was a favorite of the late Les Paul, with whom he worked closely for 11 years. Followinga three-year tenure as Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music and after establishing his“street cred” in New York City, Christian returned to his hometown in order to be close to familyand set out to build his career exclusively as a bandleader and entrepreneur.

In August 2011, Christian was ranked as the #1 “Rising Star” violinist in the Downbeat CriticsPoll and nominated for the Jazz Journalists Association’s “Violinist Of The Year”. In 2012, he wasvoted among the top three violinists in JazzTimes’ “Expanded Critics Poll“. The same year, hereceived the Residency Partner Award from Chamber Music America for his educational outreachwith school orchestra programs. He now regularly tours throughout Asia, Europe, and the U.S. asa leader of his own groups and a soloist with orchestras. Howes toured Ukraine in June 2014 atthe invitation of the U.S. Embassy, as a cultural ambassador, underscoring U.S. support for afree and democratic Ukraine.

After releasing a string of independent releases as a leader, he signed with Resonance Records in2008 and released three critically acclaimed albums. The first, “Heartfelt”, featuring pianistRoger Kellaway, showcases ballads and lyrical works. “Out of the Blue,” released in 2010,features guitarist Robben Ford, and demonstrates a wide range of modern and traditionalsensibilities, steeped in the blues. His newest release, “Southern Exposure,” featuringaccordionist Richard Galliano, draws from a Hispanic sphere of influence.

LOREN AND MARK $20.00 Friday 1/16 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

International Guitar Duo and proteges of Tommy Emmanuel play Nighttown! Featuring: Loren Barrigar (Syracuse, NY) & Mark Mazengarb (New Zealand). With Special Guest opening act guitarist Dan Bankhurst.

“Fresh and Exciting… these guys ROCK!!”Tommy Emmanuel, Australian guitar virtuoso

Loren and Mark first met in 2005 when they spent a few days working with the great TommyEmmanuel at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp. Mark was a college kid, justcompleting his degree in classical guitar at the University of North Carolina; Loren was already aseasoned performer, but it was his first serious look at acoustic guitar. After the workshop, Markvisited Loren and they spent some time picking guitar – and picking each other’s brains.

In 2009 they met again in Nashville at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) convention,an international gathering of hundreds of guitarists. That set the stage for the 2010 CAASconvention where they were on the schedule of performers. Though they were not originallylisted to play on the big Saturday night finale, they were added to the show due to populardemand from those who heard them throughout the week.

Loren and Mark's varied repertoire of original and arranged music consists of stunning guitarduets as well as songs, giving them a wide appeal.

Their music is influenced by Bluegrass, Jazz and Western; their style of guitar playing is largelybuilt upon the thumb-picking techniques pioneered by guitar greats Merle Travis, Chet Atkinsand Jerry Reed, and their songs feature Lorens superb vocals and some beautiful harmoniesfrom Mark.

Barrigar and Mazengarb have toured extensively in both the USA and in Europe, and their fanbase is rapidly expanding. They recorded their first album together the summer of 2011 whichwon a SAMMY (Syracuse Area Music Awards) for Best Album at the Northeast Music IndustryConference, and their second album Onward also won a SAMMY. The title track 'Onward' wonfirst place at the International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA) for Best Instrumental. Their mostrecent album is live from their 2013 tour of Europe

Loren and Marks live performances feature not only their spectacular technical grasp of theguitar, but also their outstanding musicality and ability to be spontaneously creative. Theinteraction between the two musicians is as much a feature of their shows as is the world-classguitar playing that they both display.
