IamwritingtoformallysubmitmynominationforInterimPresidentoftheUniversityofAkron.

AlthoughtheBoardofTrusteesisofficiallyseekingapermanentsuccessortoPresidentProenza,Irecommend

analternativeoptionthatmeetstheurgentdemandsofourUniversity. Decisiveandfocusedleadershipis

requiredtoprovidethedirectionnecessarytofacethechallengesandseizetheopportunitiesthatwillposition

TheUniversityofAkronforfuturesuccess. Myexperienceasaleaderinhighereducationwithoverthirtyfive

yearsatYoungstownStateandOhioStateandoverthelasttwentytwomonthsattheUniversityofAkron,

presentsauniqueopportunitythatIhopewillbeseriouslyconsideredbytheBoardofTrustees.

AtimesuchasthisrequiresaninterimleadershipapproachtosuccessfullypositiontheUniversityto

deliveronanambitiousstudentsuccessagenda. Inthehighereducationsector,wearefacinginanincreasingly

competitiveenvironmentinwhichwemustsimultaneouslyattractstudents,retainandgraduatestudents,

stabilizeourfiscalhealth,growourresearchportfolioandraisemoreexternalfunds.Themoretraditionalroute

ofselectingandlaunchingapresident whichinvolvesthenewpermanentpresidenttakingthenecessarytime

tobuildateamofleaders,learnthecommunity,connectwithalumniandmajordonorsandsetastrategicand

operationaldirectionmaytakeuptotwoyears. Iamconcernedthatbecauseofinternalandexternalforces,

theUniversitycannotaffordthelossofmomentumthatislikelytoaccompanythiskindofatimelag.Istrongly

encouragetheBoardofTrusteestoconsideraninterimpresidencythatwillallowthegroundworkcurrently

beinglaid

to

gain

momentum

and

the

transition

to

anew

permanent

leader

to

take

place

when

the

University

is

onmoresolidground.

WithgreatreverencetoDr.Proenzasimpressivelegacy,theUniversityfindsitselfatacrossroadsthata

newcomermaynotbeabletocompetitivelynavigate.Itismyopinionthatweneedmorethanaleaderwhocan

hitthegroundrunning.Rather,theUniversitywouldbebetterservedbyaleaderwhohasbeenonthe

groundwiththecurrentteam.Aleaderwhoisawareofthechallenges,talentsandcommitmentofthecurrent

leadershipteam;wellversedinthecurrentcultureoffacultyandstaff;knowswellandiswellknownbythe

communitiesimportanttoourenrollment,fundraisingandstrategicpartnershipstrategies.Suchaleaderwillbe

preparedtomaketimelytoughdecisionstoimprovestudentsuccess. IamconfidentthatIamtherightleader

tobridge

the

transition

from

Dr.

Proenzas

accomplished

fifteen

year

tenure

to

the

selection

of

anew

permanentpresidentwhowillbechargedwithpropellingourgreatUniversityintoitsnexteraofexcellence.Put

simply,IbelieveIamtherightleaderforthistime.

Importantly,inselectinganinterimleadertheUniversitywillnothavetopayforthesalaryoftwo

presidentsacurrentsittingpresidentandoneonsabbatical.Thisprovidesanother$500kto$1millionfor

reinvestmentintoscholarships,endowedchairs,facultydevelopment,fundraising,andstrategicpartnerships

likeABIA,UARFandtheUniversityParkneighborhood.

WhiletheoutcomesofthestrategicinitiativesIhaveledundertheallinclusivestudentsuccessbanner

areyettobeobjectivelymeasuredfortheirimpact,thereisevidenceofearlywinsandpositivemomentumin

therecruitment,retention,scholarshipreallocation,alumniengagement,careerplanning,facultyrelationships,

inclusiveexcellenceandpartnershipareas.TheBoardactingasquicklyasprudenttonamemeInterimPresident

willprovidetheauthorityandresponsibilitynecessarytomaximizethetimeperiodbetweenNOWandJuly1,

2014.

Ifoundthefollowingparagraphtobepersuasiveinfavorofinterimleadership.AccordingtoPointB

Consulting,interimleadershiphascertainbenefitsthatmaysuccessfullysetthestageforthenewpermanent

leader:Skilledinterimleaderscantransformthistimeofturmoilandtransitionintoawindowofopportunityforthe

organization.Theycanusetheirtemporarypresenceandneutralperspectivetoconductahighlyproductive

postmortemoflifeunderthepreviousleadershipthatofferscrucialinsightsintothecurrentsituation.By

layingoutthelandscape,surfacingpivotalissuesandidentifyingroadblocks,theycanprovidetheincoming

leaderwiththeorganizationalintelligencetodevelopaneffective306090planandquicklymobilizeforcesto

deliverresults.

an

position

call

for

hybrid

leader.

It
