European Heating Industry

Eurogas – GERG – Marcogaz Workshop

24 June 2014

In this presentation:

• About the European Heating Industry

• Heating Europe’s buildings

• The EU policy framework – Evolution and impact

• Markets & technologies – Trends for the heating sector

2

Heating Europe’s buildings

• Over 40% of the final energy consumption in

Europe takes place in buildings

• 85% of energy consumption in a building is

required for space heating and domestic hot

water (heating alone = 70%)

• More than 40% of residential buildings are built

before 1960s

• Out of 120 million central space heaters, around

65% are old and less efficient appliances

according to today’s standards

Progress expected short/medium term:

• Ecodesign / Labelling: from 2015 gas condensing boiler

only as non-condensing boilers are replaced + promotion of

GHP & mCHP

• EPBD / NZEBs: decrease of heat demand in the residential

sector / shift in role of gas (adapted solutions + RES)

• Air quality: NOx, CO and particulate emissions limits

• EED: energy efficiency target + national heating and cooling

plans

• Gas quality harmonization: under analysis - adaptation of

heating appliances to diversity of gas supply (cost /

responsibility)

EU Policy Framework:

Markets and technologies:

Trends for the heating sector

- Gas -

• Acceleration of condensing technology uptake

• Diversification of hybrid combinations

– Gas condensing boiler + solar thermal

– Gas condensing boiler + electric heat pump

– …

• Gas heat pumps: slow uptake

• Micro-CHP: slow update / barriers

Markets and technologies:

Trends for the heating sector

- Other heating solutions -

• Recovery / growth of electric heat pumps

• Constant decrease of oil heating

• Current solar thermal decrease – uncertain future

• Promotion of biomass (+/- air quality vs. RES policy)

• Local space heating / mainly electric (low heat

demand)

• Increase of ventilation + heat recovery systems

• Promotion of district heating (policy momentum EED)
