Educator’s Notes Dear 4-H Families and Friends, Each year the Trempealeau County 4-H Leaders Board takes out an insur-ance policy with American Income Life that provides accident insurance for all 4-H members while participating in a scheduled 4-H club or project meeting. WHAT IS THE COVERAGE PROVIDED BY THIS INSURANCE? The American Income Life Policy provides up to $2500.00 for any injury that is sustained during a 4-H program. If an injury takes place during a 4-H event you should immediately contact the 4-H office and provide the necessary infor-mation to submit a claim. Swine Identification Distribution Event and Porcine Epidemic
Diarrhea Virus What is Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv)? PEDv is caused by a corona virus and causes se-
vere diarrhea and death in pigs three weeks of age or less. Older pigs get sick and off feed for two
to three days and generally pass through the disease and resume normal growth and production. This
is a very devastating disease to farrowing operations and farms that have young pigs. There are vac-
cines available in the United States but the efficacy is still being researched. Vaccines have shown
little efficacy in Europe. The background immunity of sows and gilts that have been exposed or vac-
cinated is not well known at this time. Pork from pigs that have been sick or exposed to the virus is
safe for human consumption. People cannot get sick from this virus.
The only way to control this disease is through bio security and prevention. Because of this there will
be no pig weigh ins for the fair this year.
This is not a suggestion that there are no weigh ins – it is an order of the state veterinarian. There
will be a hog show at the Trempealeau County Fair this year.
It will be a terminal show, meaning all pigs will go to slaughter that show up at the fair. Do not
bring any pigs that you will want to bring home, such as breeding stock or light weight hogs.
This year there is a breeding gilt category for the hog show. This was added to give youth the
opportunity to show a pig that was too heavy for the market classes. All pigs will go to slaugh-
ter.
How will we weigh our pigs? Since weigh ins are banned we will hold a swine identification
distribution event April 11 from 9-12. This will take place in the Tremplo Room in the court
house in Whitehall. Do not bring pigs to this event. At this event you will receive tags for
your pigs and any other relevant materials. The show at the fair will be similar to other
shows in the past except there will be no rate of gain calculation.
Bio Security:
All people attending the identification distribution event must not wear clothing to include
jackets, hats, gloves, pants, shirts, and shoes that have been in contact with hogs or hog ma-
nure. Each family will need to get their own tagging pliers because passing tagging pliers
from one farm to another could be a potential route of infection. The tags used are Allflex
and the pliers can be purchased from farm supply stores or purchased on line from numerous
sources. Cost is about $20.
General Biosecurity practices
• Step 1--‐ Clean organic material (manure, dirt, shavings) off with hot soap and water. (boots, clothing,
trucks, trailers, equipment, etc.) • Step 2 --‐ Use disinfectants following the dilution level exactly! • Step 3 --‐ Then allow to dry. • Separate clothes & boots from other farms to your farm • Create a definite line of separation • Clean & disinfect show equipment
If we all work together we can have a healthy and successful show.

Give From the Heart
February activity sponsored by the Trempealeau County 4-H Ambassadors.
This February, we invite all 4-H clubs to make donations to the food pantry in your
town. This county-wide campaign is needed to help assure that no one will go hungry
this winter. We are hoping that each club can encourage your club members to “Give
from the Heart” by donating non-perishable food items. Items to donate include pea-
nut butter, fruit juice, canned fruit, pasta/rice; canned fish/meat, hot or cold cereal, canned soup,
spaghetti sauce, boxed meal starters and any non-perishable food item.
Let’s have a little friendly competition between the 4-H Clubs in Trempealeau County! We are asking
each club to submit a count of the items donated to the local food pantry along with the number of
club members and we will calculate a percentage of participation. This would keep it fair for both
smaller clubs and larger clubs.
Please submit this information to [email protected] by March 6th, 2015.
The winning club will receive a pizza party coordinated by the Trempealeau County 4-H Ambassadors.
The winning club will also be recognized as the club who really “Gives Through the Heart” for our local
food pantry.
Thank you for your support!!

Funding Request Opportunity
The Leader’s Board
will be doing a funding
request meeting at the
Performing Arts
Festival on February 14th around 11am.
This is an opportunity for any youth that will be
requesting funds for any events in 2015 to come before
the board
(a requirement if over $30) and not have to come ta a
monthly
Leader’s Board meetings.
Please RSVP to Seth [email protected] if inter-
ested.
Hi All, A quick reminder about the three parts that every 4-H Club Meeting should consist of: Business (business meeting), Recreation (making a snack, icebreaker, etc.), and Education (Demonstration, etc.) For Demonstrations: Youth can present about pretty much anything, as long as it is educational, it does not necessarily be tied to a project they are currently in. If it is unique, it should be supported! Thanks!

PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL
The Performing Arts Festival is a great opportunity for Trempealeau County 4-H’ers to explore their artistic, communicative and dramatic skills. I would like to encourage all youth to participate.
I will do my best to fulfill your time requests. If there are siblings that are both involved in the festival, I will try to make the schedule such so that they are not performing at the same time. I will also try to give enough time between each youth’s performance. This of course becomes more challenging if youth are signed up for multiple events. If you sign-up and are unable to attend or decide not to do a particular event, please contact us at the Extension Office. Be sure to fill the form out clearly with all portions completed. You can either fax or send in your registration forms. Only registration forms listed in the pages following will be accepted as entries! If you receive a time slot that does not work for you, please make arrangements to switch time slots with someone else, be sure to contact me if you do this.
