TRAVELS WITH SIR JOHN SOANE’S MUSEUM FOUNDATION

Dear Soaniacs,

You are cordially invited on a late summer voyage along the western shores of Europe, where dramaticlandscapes and sacred sites have drawn artists and pilgrims for centuries. From England to France and Iberia, wewill discover remote abbeys, medieval towns and nearly forgotten islands. Friends of Sir John Soane’s MuseumFoundation are joining with members of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Trust for HistoricPreservation for this memorable journey.

Traveling with us is Maryan Ainsworth, distinguished Curator of Northern Renaissance Paintings at theMet, who is a popular and engaging museum lecturer. Also joining us from the National Trust for HistoricPreservation will be preservationist and architectural historian John Meffert. And the Foundation’s ExecutiveDirector, Chas Miller, will be along as well.

For those who wish to start their trip in London a few days ahead of the sailing, there is an optional preludeoffered with a private morning welcome at the Soane Museum and a peek into the newly renovated “House NextDoor,” No. 14, which will not yet be opened to the public.

From London, we drive to Portsmouth to embark Sea Cloud II. Our nine-night voyage begins as we setsail across the Channel to Brittany and the walled seaport of St. Malo. A drive through the verdant countrysidetakes us to the nearby abbey of Mont St. Michel, rising dreamlike from the sea. We round the coast of Brittany towitness the subtle light and striking landscape of Belle Ile en Mer, described by Monet as “incomparably beautiful.”Entering the port of La Rochelle, spot the two 14th-century towers that guard her historic harbor.

In the Basque country we will call at Bilbao and visit the stunning Guggenheim. Soane Museum fansmay recall the exhibition at the Soane with Gehry’s drawings and models for Bilbao — Gehry greatly admiresmany of the innovative practices of Sir John, as do many late 20th-century architects.

Sailing along the coast of Spain, we arrive in La Coruña for a drive to Santiago de Compostela, the mostpopular pilgrimage site of the Middle Ages. Sea Cloud II continues along the Portuguese shoreline, with passage upthe Tagus River en route to Lisbon. Highlighting two days in this fascinating city are several important collections,

such as the outstanding Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

August is an ideal time to cruise these coastal waters,and it is a thrill to watch the crew raise the sails as the majesticSea Cloud II makes her way to our next port. The ship offerssumptuous accommodations and fine dining. We are pleased towelcome Eric Chavot, Head Chef of the Capital Hotel’s two-Michelin-starred restaurant, who will present demonstrations ofFrench-inspired cuisine during our days at sea.

a brief orientation tour, transfer to the Capital Hotel for

lunch. Continue to Portsmouth, where we embark Sea

Cloud II at teatime. Toast the start of our voyage with a

glass of champagne, as we set sail early this evening.

Sunday, August 12 The picturesque, walled city of St. Malo

overlooks a natural harbor, recalling its days as homeport to

sailing barques. Step ashore after lunch and drive to the

small granite island, once inaccessible at high tide, where

Mont St. Michel rises magically from the sea. We will trace

the footsteps of countless pilgrims as we enter the winding

lane leading up to the massive abbey with its stunning

views. The adjoining cloisters are renowned for their lightness

of scale, delicate columns and fine ornamentation.

Alternatively, you may wish to visit a nearby ancestral estate

and classic French garden, whose owner has extended a

warm invitation. Sail early this evening, then gather for the

captain’s welcome reception, followed by dinner.

Monday, August 13 During a relaxed day at sea, enjoy the

amenities of Sea Cloud II. As we sail past tiny Ile d’Oussant,

the lighthouse Phare de Créac’h calls from this remote edge

of Brittany. A cooking demonstration by master chef Eric

Chavot will highlight the morning. At teatime, attend an

illustrated lecture by Maryan Ainsworth.

Tuesday, August 14 Early this morning Sea Cloud II

anchors amidst the fishing boats and yachts at Belle Ile en

Mer, a ruggedly picturesque island. Walk the cobblestone

streets of its town, Le Palais, crowned by a fortified citadel

dating from 1572. See where Sarah Bernhardt lived and

discover the subtle beauty that drew Monet here to paint.

Return to the ship for lunch and attend an afternoon lecture

by John Meffert, as we cruise past the Breton islands of

Houat and Hodic.

Wednesday, August 15 Step ashore this morning in the

fashionable yachting center of La Rochelle, once a

Huguenot stronghold and the major maritime link to

French Canada. The 14th-century tower here held the

chain that was once used to close the harbor each night.

Explore La Rochelle’s covered markets, old arcaded streets

and historic houses. While we sail to Iberia this afternoon,

attend an illustrated presentation by Maryan Ainsworth.

Thursday, August 16 Arrive in Bilbao for a morning visit to

the astonishing Guggenheim Museum. This revolutionary

design by American architect Frank Gehry has redefined

museum architecture for the 21st century. After lunch

discover the Fine Arts Museum, with its excellent collection

of Basque and Spanish art. There will be leisure time to

explore this city before sailing in the early evening.

Saturday, August 18 From the town of La Coruña, drive to

the extraordinary site of Santiago de Compostela. The Way

of St. James (Santiago) was the most traveled pilgrimage

route of the Middle Ages. The ancient city of Santiago

retains a mystical quality and continues to draw modern-

day pilgrims. Experience a traditional Botafumeiro ceremony

in the 11th-century cathedral. During lunch at the 16th-

century Hostel de los Reyes Catolicos, built by Fernando of

Aragon and Isabel of Castille, costumed singers and musicians

perform. Sail this afternoon.

Sunday, August 19 Today Sea Cloud II cruises Portugal’s

scenic Douro Coast. Attend a lecture by John Meffert, or

Monday,August 20 Sail up the Tagus River this morning and

disembark in Lisbon, where ships not unlike Sea Cloud II

once set sail on great voyages of discovery. Drive to the district

of Belém, with its famous Belém Tower, and discover the

Monastery of Jerónimos, specially opened for our visit.

Continue to the Royal Palace of Ajuda, former city residence

of Portuguese kings. After a lunch of local specialties, transfer

to the deluxe Four Seasons Hotel Ritz. Dinner and the

evening are at leisure.

Wednesday, August 8 Depart New York on an overnightflight to London.

Thursday, August 9 Following morning arrival in London,transfer to the well-located Capital Hotel. Depart for a mid-morning orientation tour including a visit to the Tate Modern.Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. Saturday, August 11 On our drive this morning toPortsmouth, stop en route at Petworth House to view its finecollection, including paintings by Reynolds, van Dyck andTurner. Embark Sea Cloud II at teatime. ■

Tuesday, August 21 Set on seven hills and cooled by Atlantic

breezes, Lisbon was completely rebuilt after a devastating

earthquake in 1755. In the lower town, see the cathedral

and charming 18th-century neoclassical houses, as well as

the Madre de Deus Church that is built in the Manueline

style. A before-opening-hours visit is planned to the

National Tile Museum, housed in the church cloisters.

Following lunch at leisure, discover the restored Calouste

Gulbenkian Museum, where exhibits range from an extraor-

dinary Egyptian room to classical antiquities and Asian art.

The collections of paintings by old masters, silverware and

Lalique jewelry are priceless. Gather this evening for a festive

farewell dinner at the hotel.

RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The participation of SJSMFis limited to educational sponsorship of the programdescribed in this brochure (The Program). AAA acts only asan agent for the participant with respect to transportation,

accommodations and all other services, relating to TheProgram. AAA, SJSMF and/or their agents assume noresponsibility or liability for any act, error or omission, orfor any injury, loss, accident, delay or irregularity whichmay be occasioned by reason of any defect in any aircraft, ship, train, bus or other carrier, or through neglector default of any subcontractor or other third party, whichmay be used wholly or in part in the performance of theirduty to the participants of The Program. Additional expenses, if any, shall beborne by the participants. Baggage and personal effects arethe sole responsibility of the participant at all times. SJSMFand AAA reserve the right to accept or decline any person asa participant at any time, or to require any participant towithdraw from The Program at their own expense whensuch an action is determined by AAA or SJSMF to be in thebest interest of the participant’s health and safety, or the general welfare of the other participants.

CANCELLATION POLICY AAA must strictly adhereto its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to thecommencement of The Program, which may include but arenot limited to: advance payments to land operators; shipcharters; communication expenses; development / promo-tional expenses and the loss of time that might have permittedresale of reserved space. All cancellations must be made inwriting to the offices of AAA, and are subject to a $350non-refundable administrative fee. All refunds are limitedto amounts actually received by AAA and are the soleresponsibility of AAA; SJSMF shall have no liability for

refunds. At the time AAA receives written notification ofcancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply:cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior todeparture, $1,500 per person; those received between 90and 61 days before departure, $2,500 per person; norefunds will be given for cancellations received within 60days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation onor after the day of departure, or for unused portions of thetour, for any reason. Air cancellation charges, if any, will beassessed in accordance with airline regulations. All groupfare tickets must be issued no less than 30 days prior todeparture. NOTE: Neither AAA nor SJSMF shall be liablefor any airline cancellation penalties incurred by the purchaseof a non-refundable ticket. In the case of a cancellation dueto shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify allparticipants at least 45 days prior to departure. However,AAA reserves the right to cancel The Program prior todeparture for any reason and, in such case, reimbursementof refundable costs of the trip by AAA shall constitute fullsettlement with the participant. In the unlikely event that adispute arises between a participant and AAA or SJSMF, thefollowing conditions will apply: (a) the dispute will be settledby binding arbitration administered by the AmericanArbitration Association in New York, NY; (b) the disputewill be governed by New York Law; (c) the maximumamount of recovery to which a participant shall be entitledunder any and all circumstances will be the sum of allmonies actually received from the participant by AAA.
