Regine Sixt talks Sixt centenaryat World Travel Market 2011

Following Sixt’s 2010 victory at theWorld Travel Awards – where thebrand won the title of World’sLeading Marketing Innovation – wecaught up with Regine Sixt, SeniorExecutive Vice President SixtInternational, to see what the futureholds for the brand.

World Travel Awards: What do you thinkit is that separates Sixt from its rivals?

Regine Sixt: The Sixt family – now in thefourth generation – has been running thecompany for almost a century, the name andthe managing family are the same. This adds aspecial charm to our customers.

Furthermore, we are the only internationalcompany able to provide our customers with

handheld mobility services of all sorts; startingwith offers for only one hour up to severalyears. We recently started innovativeproducts such as car sharing with projects likeDriveNow and we are industry pioneers intechnological advancements with our mobileapplications, special vehicle features andunique rental processes. Innovation is and hasalways been our drive; from the verybeginning.

We are also proud to provide our clientsworldwide with our exclusive Sixt LimousineService and our Full-Service-Leasingproducts.

WTA: Many operators reported the firstsigns of recovery during 2011, has thisbeen the case for Sixt?

RS: Today we are one of the most profitablecar rental companies worldwide; I would even

risk saying the most profitable of all. Forexample the first six months of 2010 havebeen the most successful in our history; werecorded a turnover of €756 billion and a netprofit of €50.2 billion.

So looking to the end of 2011 you might justsee double these figures.

WTA: You were awarded the title ofWoman of the Year at the 2010 WorldTravel Awards. Could you tell us what thishonour meant to you?

RS: This award from this prestigiousorganisation was a true honour.

I feel a strong responsibility to fulfil theexpectations put into my marketing strategiesand my charity organisation – the Regine SixtChildren’s Aid Foundation Drying little Tears.

Of course this recognition, as well as one forSixt’s innovative marketing, is a source ofgreat pride for Sixt, for me and for my team. It shows that we consistently and successfullyevolved in the past 99 years from a smallMunich family business into a global andpublicly traded enterprise.

I have also been awarded with the Citizen ofthe World award of Hadassah, the BavarianOrder of Merit, and a lot more.

I consider these awards confirmation I did it right and we took the right steps anddecisions on our way. But, you know, prizesare never a reason to lay back. They are astimulation to strengthen our efforts in ourmission to provide our customers with topquality.

WTA: Can you tell us a little about whatSixt has in store for 2012?

Jamaica named Caribbean’s LeadingDestination at World Travel Awards

Tourism in Jamaica has weathered the storm and is set to emerge stronger than ever.

Last month Jamaica wasnamed Caribbean’sLeading Destination bythe World Travel Awardsat a Gala Ceremonyhosted by Sandals RoyalCaribbean. The holidaydestination also scoopedthe titles of Caribbean’sLeading Tourist Board andCaribbean’s LeadingSports Destination in anunprecedented night ofsuccess.

Famously described by Christopher Columbusas the “fairest isle that eyes ever behold”, thedestination offers an unforgettable holidayexperience to an estimated two millioninternational visitors each year.

Innovations for 2011

Jamaica’s position as a leader in the globaltourism arena was further bolstered earlier thisyear when representatives from the islandserved in several key leadership positionswithin the United Nations World TourismOrganisation (UNWTO).Tourism minister Edmund Bartlett was electedto serve as vice president for the 19th GeneralAssembly of the UNWTO in South Korea,presiding over several sessions of theassembly. He commented: “It is an honour forJamaica to serve in this capacity and ourselection further underscores our goodstanding in the international arena and theconfidence our counterparts place in Jamaica

as a leader within the tourism industry at theglobal level.”

Also this year Jamaica celebrated the officialopening of the new Historic Falmouth Port.Situated between the popular cruisedestinations of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay,Historic Falmouth is the first-ever thematiccruise port that provides a convenient gatewayfor guests to embark on more than 60exhilarating land experiences along the northcoast of Jamaica.

Additionally, ongoing revitalisations throughoutthe town of Falmouth offer guests anextensive array of cultural and historicexperiences for an adventurous Jamaican portcall on their cruise vacation.

It is hardly surprising that Jamaica wasrecognised for three World Travel Awards lastmonth during the Caribbean & the Americasceremony event – itself hosted in Jamaica.

In responding to the presentation of theseaccolades, minister Bartlett said: “I must admitthat we are very humbled by this recognitionand the fact that through our efforts Jamaicahas been able to perform well in world tourismand in so doing fuel the growth of the industryin the Caribbean.”

Jamaica’s stand at World Travel Market is set tobe a hub or activity with the 2012 50thAnniversary of Independence celebrations,Jamaica Jazz & Blues, the Olympics and thecreation of the Jamaica Village all set to beamong the hot topics.

In 2011 TAP Portugal inaugurated services to11 new destinations.

Currently, TAP offers 74 weekly services toBrazil from its bases in Portugal.

“We have put together a strategy that has aunique competitive advantage for Brazil,”explained TAP administrator Luiz Mór.

In the USA, Miami joined the TAP network,while the African destinations of Bamako(Mali), Accra (Ghana) and Sao Vicente (CapeVerde) are now served by the carrier.

In Europe; Athens, Manchester, Bordeaux,Vienna, and Dusseldorf all now welcomeregular services from the Portuguese flag-carrier.

TAP is looking forward to a number of excitingdevelopments in 2012, with the retrofitprogramme, featuring new seats and new in-flight entertainment systems, of its AirbusA340 fleet due to be completed.

“With such an upgrade to be applied to ourfour A340 aircraft in operation on the long

haul sector, TAP continues to ensure thequality and reliability of the in-flightentertainment systems equipping its fleetacross the whole network,” said Luís Monteiro,vice president of Marketing, TAP Portugal.

“Thereby, the company provides customerswith a superior level of comfort and quality onboard, living up to their expectations andaligning with the best practices within theIndustry.”

Next year will also see TAP focus on increasedfunctionality for its mobile channel, providingguests with an increased range of possibilitieswhen booking with the airline.

Malaysia Airlines – winners of theWorld Travel Awards for Asia’s LeadingAirline and Asia’s Leading AirlineLounge at the Asia & Australasia GalaCeremony earlier this year – is one ofthe largest carriers on the continent.

With its subsidiaries, the airline employs20,000 staff, flying 15.7 million passengers in2010, serving almost 100 destinationsglobally in more than 30 countries across Asia,Australasia, Europe, Africa and North and SouthAmerica.

Its current group of fleet comprises 126aircraft, including ten Boeing 747-400s, 17777-200s, 11 Airbus A330-300s, 11 Boeing737-800s and 37 737-400s.

Its orders include six Airbus A380s, for deliveryfrom 2012.

In 2011

In one of the most surprising and excitingdevelopments of the year, Malaysia Airlines put aside a decade of competition with budget carrier AirAsia in favour of closercooperation.

A share swap, signed by the carriers in August,will reduce competition and cut costs in one ofAsia's key economies.

Under the agreement, resources for MalaysianAirline low-cost carrier, Firefly, will berefocused toward a full, regional service,reducing competition for AirAsia.

Looking Forward

Malaysia Airlines is expected to start flying aspart of oneworld in late 2012 after beingelected on board as a member designate of thealliance in June this year.

Under the sponsorship of Qantas, MalaysiaAirlines intends to develop bilateral links with anumber of oneworld's established partners,building on existing code-share deals withoneworld partners Cathay Pacific and RoyalJordanian.
