Devon Falls

A view of the front of this 97m-high fall is possible from Midigama. It is one

of six falls affected by the upper Kotmale hydro-power project. This project

has had an adverse impact on the environment. According to Sirisena, an

environmentalist, poet and native of the area, Kotmale used to be famous

for pure honey and jaggery, both products of the Kithul tree. These trees

have disappeared since the introduction of the hydro-power project, which the Japanese

government has assisted by providing credit facilities. To compensate for the loss of the fall, the

Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) plans to release water 10 times a day.

Hakgala

Botanic Gardens at Hakgala were established in 1861 for the purpose of

experimentation and promotion of Cinchona cultivation in Sri Lanka. The

gardens lying in the hill country among Sri Lanka's tea plantations in the

Nuwara Eliya district are located along the Badulla Road, 9.5 km South-east

of Nuwara Eliya, the popular holiday resort.

Situated at an elevation of about 1745 m above mean sea level, Hakgala Botanic Gardens, about 28

hectares in extent, lie under the shadow of the Hakgala Rock (meaning “Elephant's jaw rock”). This

massive rock towers to a height of about 2,200m behind the gardens and the surrounding forest

reserve like a solitary giant.

The gardens take the shape of several terraces upon the lower slopes of the rock and face the Uva

Valley, across which some magnificent views of the Madulsima and the Namunukula range of

mountains are seen in the distant landscape. The climate of the Gardens is subtropical, cool, fresh

and some what similar to an alpine atmosphere.

Ambewela farms

Situated in the lush green hills of Nuwara Eliya, Ambewela Farms are

made up of two farms, Ambewela Farm and New Zealand Farm. Blessed

with the cool climes and pristine environment of the hill country,

products.

The Ambewela Farm has purebred Ayrshire cattle and the New Zealand Farm rears purebred Friesian

cows, with both farms maintaining a pure line of cattle. These pedigree cows require a great deal of

attention, and in order to maintain the quality of the milk, the farm management takes great care to

provide them with a balanced diet and sterilized drinking water. In addition, the cattle are given

excellent healthcare by our two resident veterinary surgeons that tend to the animals on a 24-hour

basis. The cleanliness of the milking process is also of great importance with automatic milking

parlours maintaining the highest levels of hygiene set by the Alfa Laval Company of Sweden. These

measures ensure that the milk produced in the two farms is of the very best quality.
