Finding A Place To Stay There are many short term and long term places to stay around the University of Chicago Medicine and nearby in the city of Chicago.

For Families of Children

The Ronald McDonald House is close to the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital and just a short walk or shuttle ride from the medical center. The Ronald McDonald House is a "home away from home" for families with hospitalized children.

Contact the hospital social worker or case worker assigned to your child to find out if the Ronald McDonald House is a good fit for your needs. The Ronald McDonald House is located at 5444 S. Drexel Avenue, Chicago, IL 60615. Their phone number is (773) 324-5437.

Hotel Partner Program for Cancer Patients

The American Cancer Society Hotel Partner Program provides places to stay for cancer patients who are traveling to get medical care for cancer. This service is made possible by the American Cancer Society and participating hotels. Available rooms are provided for free or for a reduced cost. Chicago Airports Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) (8 miles from the hospital)

You can go from Midway Airport to downtown Chicago (the Loop) using the public transit CTA Orange Line. At downtown, Orange Line trains go around the Loop and then back to Midway. Travel time from Midway to downtown is about 20 to 25 minutes. The Orange Line runs from 4:30am to 1:00am every day with more service during weekday morning and evening rush hours.

The Midway Orange Line station is just east of the airport terminal building. It is connected to the airport by an enclosed walkway. At the Airport follow the signs to "CTA Trains" or "Trains to City". An orange line painted on the ground will guide you there.

You will need a CTA fare card to ride the train. Use cash or a credit card to buy a CTA fare card at the vending machines near the station entrance.

The CTA also has nine buses that serve Midway.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) (26 miles from the hospital) You can go from O’Hare Airport to downtown Chicago (the Loop) using the public transit CTA Blue Line. The Blue Line train runs 24 hours a day with more service during weekday morning and evening rush hours.

When you get to O’Hare Airport, ride the Airport Transit System or walk to the Blue Line Station on the lower level of Terminal 2. The Airport Transit System connects each terminal and the parking lots. You will need a CTA fare card to ride the train. Use cash or a credit card to buy a CTA fare card at the vending machines located near the station entrance

Public Transportation The Chicago area has one of the largest public transportation systems in the United States.

You can get to the University of Chicago Medicine campus using the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) trains and buses. You can also use the Metra Electric Line and South Shore Line commuter trains. Get more information on these websites.

CTA Bus Routes Near University of Chicago Medicine You can get to the medical campus using CTA bus routes. CTA Buses go downtown and to many Chicago suburbs and neighborhoods. The CTA online trip planner can help plan your route.

CTA Bus Routes Near University of Chicago Medicine #4 Cottage Grove. Pick up on Cottage Grove Ave every 6 to 15 minutes depending on the time of day. Runs south to 95th Street and St. Lawrence Ave. Goes north to North Columbus Drive and East South Water Street.

#55 Garfield. Runs from the Museum of Science and Industry to Midway Airport. Bus stops near UCM are at 55th Street and Cottage Grove Ave. If using the Green Line or Red Line trains, get off at the Garfield station. Take #55 bus east to campus.

Express Bus Routes Near University of Chicago Medicine CTA has express buses with just a few stops between downtown and the area around the University of Chicago Medicine. Buses run mornings and afternoons Monday to Friday only.

#192 U of Chicago Hospitals Express. Runs on weekdays only between Union Station and Ogilvie Transportation Center to the UCM campus. The morning service runs from 6:30am to 9:30am from downtown to the hospital. The afternoon and evening service runs from 3:45pm to 7:35pm from the hospital to downtown.

#2 Hyde Park Express. Runs between East 60th Street and South Cottage Grove Ave to Navy Pier. Runs Monday to Friday 6:00am to 10:00am and 3:30pm to 8pm.

#6 Jackson Park Express. Runs from East Wacker Drive and North Columbus Dr. to East 79th Street and South Shore Drive. It has bus stops downtown Chicago on Michigan Ave, State Street, The Loop, and Congress Parkway. In Hyde Park there are bus stops on Stoney Island Ave. The bus runs every 6 to 13 minutes depending on the time of day.

#1 Bronzeville/Union Station. Runs south from Union Station to Michigan Ave and 35th Street from 6:10am to 9:45am and from 3:00pm to 6:50pm. Goes north from 35th Street and Indiana Ave to Union Station from 5:40am to 9:00am and from 2:25pm to 6:15pm.

Express Bus Routes Near University of Chicago Medicine

#170 University of Chicago Midway. Runs from the Metra train station at 57th Street and Stoney Island Ave and goes around the Midway Plaisance on 59th and 60th Streets. Buses run weekdays only from 5:30am to 9:45am and from 3:30pm to 6:50pm. Commuter Rail

Metra Electric District Line

The Metra Electric District Line has two stops near our campus. One stop is at 57th Street and Lake Park Ave. The other stop is at 59th and Harper Street.

The train begins at Millennium Park and Randolph Street and goes south to University Park, IL.

The price of fare cards is based on how far you are going.

South Shore Line Passenger Service Indiana

The South Shore Line train runs between Northwest Indiana and the 57th Street station.

CTA bus #170/University of Chicago Midway goes from the 57th station to the medical campus 860 E. 59th Street entrance. The 170 bus runs during weekday rush hour periods.

The South Shore Line takes cash only on the train. You can use cash or checks at ticket offices. The Van Buren Street ticket office takes cash only. You can use Visa or MasterCard when buying tickets online.

Driving Directions

When planning your travel, allow extra time for traffic delays during peak driving times or road repairs.

From The North Kennedy Expressway (I-90) and Edens Expressway (I-94)

1. Take the Kennedy Expressway (I-90) east, or Edens Expressway (I-94) east, southbound to the Dan Ryan Expressway I-90/94 east.

2. Exit at 55th Street, also called Garfield Boulevard (exit 57).

3. Turn left (east) onto Garfield Boulevard. Continue through Washington Park and follow the blue hospital signs to Cottage Grove Ave.

4. Turn right (south) onto Cottage Grove Ave. then left (east) onto 57th, 58th, or 59th Street.

Lake Shore Drive (US-41) 1. Drive south on Lake Shore Drive to the 57th Street exit.

2. Exit (right) at 57th Street, just before the Museum of Science and Industry.

3. Go south on 57th Street around the museum, following the blue hospital signs.

4. Turn right (west) onto Midway Plaisance.

5. Drive on Midway Plaisance all the way to Cottage Grove Ave.

6. Turn right (north) onto Cottage Grove Ave. then right (east) onto 57th, 58th, or 59th Street.

From The South Bishop Ford Expressway (I-94 or I-57) to Dan Ryan Expressway (I-94)

1. Take the Bishop Ford Expressway/I-94 or I-57 northbound to the Dan Ryan Expressway I-94 west. Stay in the local lanes.

2. Continue north on the Dan Ryan Expressway.

3. Exit at 55th Street, also called Garfield Boulevard (exit 57).

4. Turn right (east) onto Garfield Boulevard. Continue through Washington Park and follow the blue hospital signs to Cottage Grove Ave.

5. Turn right (south) onto Cottage Grove Ave. then left (east) onto 57th, 58th, or 59th Street.

Chicago Skyway (I-90) 1. From the Skyway, exit at Stony Island Ave.

2. Follow Stony Island Ave north to Midway Plaisance--which is just after 60th Street.

3. Turn left (west) onto Midway Plaisance and continue west to Cottage Grove Ave.

4. Turn right (north) onto Cottage Grove Ave. then right (east) onto 57th, 58th, or 59th Street.

Lake Shore Drive (IL-41) 1. Take Lake Shore Drive north to 57th Street.

2. Exit left (west) at 57th Street and go south around the Museum of Science and Industry, following the blue hospital signs.

3. Turn right onto Midway Plaisance, and continue west to Cottage Grove Ave.

From The West Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) to Dan Ryan Expressway

1. Take Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) east to Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/I-94) east.

2. Continue southbound on the Dan Ryan.

3. Exit at 55th Street, also called Garfield Boulevard (exit 57).

4. Turn left (east) onto Garfield Boulevard. Continue through Washington Park and follow the blue hospital signs to Cottage Grove Ave.

Stevenson Expressway (I-55) to Dan Ryan Expressway 1. Take the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) east to the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/I-94) east.

3. Exit at 55th Street, also called Garfield Boulevard (exit 57).

Parking at the University of Chicago Medicine The University of Chicago Medicine has a number of options to meet the parking needs of our patients, visitors, faculty and staff. Ask our staff about discount parking rates.

Self-Parking

Parking A: 5840 S. Maryland Ave. Turn on Maryland Ave. from 59th Street and the entrance will be on your left. This garage is best for patients and visitors going to Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital and Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (DCAM). A walking bridge on Level 2 connects Parking A to Mitchell and DCAM. Parking A Office is located on Level 1, enter on Maryland Ave.

Parking B: 5656 S. Maryland Ave. Turn on Maryland Ave. from 56th Street and the entrance will be on your right. You can also enter on Cottage Grove Ave. This garage is best for patients and visitors going to the Center for Care and Discovery (CCD). Patient and visitor parking is on the first 6 levels. Staff permit parking is on the top two levels. A walking bridge on Level 2 connects Parking B and CCD. Parking B Office is located on Level 2 near the walking bridge. Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Parking There are parking spaces for people with disabilities in Parking A and Parking B garages. These spaces are only for visitors and patients with a state issued ADA permit. No exceptions.

Valet Parking There is valet parking on weekdays in front of the Center for Care and Discovery (CCD), Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital, Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (DCAM), and Comer Children's Hospital. The Valet Services Office is located in DCAM on Level 1 near the Valet Pay Station.

Parking Services

The University of Chicago Medicine provides the following services to patients and visitors within our parking garages between the hours of 7am and 8:30pm

A customer service parking attendant is here 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. You can reach the attendant from any parking pay station. For parking questions call Parking Services at (773) 702-4381. Parking Offices are open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Air for Tires When in the garage, parking staff can help inflate tires if needed. Please stop by the Parking Services Office or call (773) 702-4381 for additional assistance.

Emergency Jump Start If your car does not start because of a problem with the battery the Parking Staff has equipment to help start your car. Between 7am and 8pm call the Parking Office. During overnight hours between 8pm and 7am call Security at (773) 702-6262.

Finding Your Car Each parking level has “pull tabs” near the elevator to help you remember where you parked your car. If you need more help go to the Parking Office.

Lock-Out Services If you get locked out of your car the parking staff can call road side assistance or a locksmith. You are responsible for any charges from these services.

Parking Safety For your safety we have alarms on every floor and TV cameras throughout the parking garages. We can walk visitors to their car if needed. Please call Security if you would feel safer having someone walk with you to your car. (773) 702-6262.
