Students are expected to attend and do the required work in each of their courses. Grade 10 students will NOT be allowed to make program changes once timetables are distributed. In addition, Grade 10 students are not allowed to drop classes during the year; exceptions may be made by Administration. Grade 11 and 12 students will only be allowed to make class changes due to program need.

STUDY PERIODS As a general rule, the school does not permit student study periods for Grade 10 students or recommend study periods for grade 11 students. Most grade 10 and 11 students will be registered in a full program. Grade 12 students should be registered in the maximum number of courses to ensure that they meet diploma requirements at the end of their third year. If a student study period is unavoidable, students should be studying or reading in the Learning Commons or cafeteria or they should leave the building.

WORK EXPERIENCE 25/35 (3-15 credits)

Work Experience allows students to gain practical knowledge, enhance their skills, confirm career decisions, and form attitudes that will assist them in their transitions from school to the world of work and/or future post-secondary educational pursuits. Students must work for a minimum of 25 hours to for each credit. Prior to placement, students must complete the Career Transitions HCS3000 – Workplace Safety Systems. When choosing a job placement, students should consider their career plans to make this a step in personal development.

REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (RAP) The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is a way for high school students to gain credits towards both an apprenticeship program and a high school certificate.

Grade 10 students must apply to be in this program. Usually, once the students have successfully completed the application process, they will begin their RAP placement during the summer after grade 10 is completed.

RAP requirements are as follows:

Completion of grade 10, on track to graduate

Recommendations from your teachers, counselors or principals

Your parent’s or guardian’s consent

Complete the appropriate job preparation and safety modules: CTR 1010, 1210, 2210 and HCS3000.

Current resume

Cover letter showing interest in a trade

Current references

Participation in appropriate safety workshops

It is possible for grade 11 and very occasionally grade 12 students to become involved in this program.

Students who are interested in applying for RAP - Please see your counsellor for more information.

SCHOOL AND STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

SCHOOL CLIMATE The School Act states “A student shall conduct himself/herself so as to reasonably comply with the following code of conduct:

a) Be diligent in pursuing his/her studies b) Attend school regularly and punctually c) Cooperate fully with everyone authorized by the board to provide education programs and other services d) Comply with the rules of the school e) Account to his/her teachers for his/her conduct f) Respect the rights of others”

It is expected that FLHS students conduct themselves

in accordance with the School Act.

Students who cannot abide by the School Act may face suspension or expulsion from the school.

SCHOOL ACCESS FOR STUDENT

The main office opens at 8:00 am and closes at 4:00 pm (Mon-Thurs) and closes at 2:00 pm (Fridays).

The school is only open for regular business between these hours.

The school outer doors will be unlocked at 7:15 in the morning

The school outer doors will be locked at 4:00 pm.

Students who are not supervised by a teacher or coach will not be allowed in the school before

7:15 am or after 4:00 pm.

Students who are being supervised by a teacher after school hours will be asked to leave directly after the

specific practice, game, club, meeting, etc. ends.

If the school is hosting an after-hours performance, meeting or game, the school will be reopened at the front

doors half an hour before the start of the event.

Should we find people in the building who are not students, we will call Calgary Police Services and file

trespassing charges.

After 4:00 pm, students will need to be on their way home or to alternative locations such as work or friends as the

school will not be available for them to “hang out” at. Students who wish to study or review without supervision of a

teacher are recommended to visit the public library. Those who wish to stay at the school after hours are encouraged to

join a team or club and make the best of their after-hours extracurricular experience.

SCHOOL PHOTO ID POLICY FLHS has a mandatory School Photo ID policy in order to maintain the safety and security of all students and discourage trespassers.

Students are required to have their school photo ID with them at all times while on school property. Students in hallways without a school ID will be sent to the office.

If you are concerned about a trespasser advise any staff member immediately.

Students with permission to be outside of their class must carry their teacher’s blue lanyard and present upon request.

Students are required to surrender their school photo ID upon request by any school staff member. Failure to do so is considered defiance.

Student school photo ID that is transferred, loaned or altered will be confiscated by school staff members. The owner will need to meet with his/her administrator to retrieve the photo ID.

Students who continually choose not to have with them their student photo ID will be in defiance of the FLHS school photo ID policy.

Students who forget their school photo ID will be asked to go to the main office to obtain another ID.

Students who continually forget their school photo ID will be considered defiant of this policy.

Every effort will be made by students to locate school photo ID. Damaged school photo ID will be replaced $3.00. Old ID’s must be returned to purchase a new one.

Page 9: “Travel by Way of the Truth” - CBEschools.cbe.ab.ca/b813/admin/pdfs/2015-2016/2015-2016 Student... · “Travel by Way of the Truth ... Registered Apprenticeship Program and Work

9

Defiance of this policy will result in the student being suspended and a reinstatement meeting with a parent/guardian or independent student will need to be arranged.

Your school photo ID is needed to receive textbooks, resource books and to attend sporting events.

All visitors to FLHS are required to wear visible CBE Photo Identification.

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance is a requisite in the educational process. Students are expected to be in class on time and ready to work every day.

When a student misses a class, a parent or guardian must call the school within 24 hours to excuse the absence

with an appropriate excuse. ATTENDANCE LINE 403- 272- 6665 ext. 1

If the absence is not excused within 24 hours, it will remain unexcused

FLHS expects that all students are in attendance and on time for all of their classes. There is an expectation that no late or absence will go without being addressed. Synrevoice Messaging Service will automatically call the student’s home daily with a message of an unexplained absence.

Student Responsibilities:

Punctuality creates a respectful learning environment. Students are responsible for their attendance and are expected to be in class on time.

Students who are habitually late will be required to meet with their teacher(s) to address their inability to attend class on time.

Students who miss a test/quiz must provide a valid reason for their absence and a signed note from their parent/guardian. The student must arrange a time with the teacher to make up the test/quiz.

Test Centre – Students will have the opportunity twice weekly (Tuesday and Thursday) after school to make up missed tests, quizzes, etc. in a teacher-supervised test centre as pre-arranged by the student and teacher. Students will be required to show their student photo ID, and no cell phones will be allowed.

Extended Leaves – Section 13(5) of Alberta School Act, excuses students from attending school only if due to sickness or other unavoidable cause, religious holidays, suspension/expulsion or permission from the Board. It is not the school’s or Calgary Board of Education’s responsibility to provide homework to students who will be away on an extended absence. This absence will be listed as an inexcusable absence in your child’s school attendance record.

Extended absences from school need to be communicated with an Assistant Principal a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the absence via an Extended Leave Form available from the main office.

HomeLogic is the parent and student portal for the Calgary Board of Education.

To register you will need to supply the school with a valid email address. You will then access the HOMELOGIC page via the school website at www.schools/b813. The access is on the right hand side of the home page. To register please follow the instructions below or on the HOMELOGIC page.

Self-registration can be done by choosing the "New User?" option to the right under the login screen. Parents, once you have completed the self-registration process, you will receive an email with your username and password. Log in from this page to access your child's current year attendance records, timetable, marks history (grades 7 -12 only), as well as the demographic information. Any questions can be directed to the main office of your child's school. Lost passwords can be retrieved by entering your username to the left and then choosing "Forgot password?". An email will be sent to the password registered in our system. Notify the school of changes in address, phone number, guardianship, or other pertinent information.

In the event that student absences interfere with their learning, teacher(s), counselor and administration will take the necessary steps to address the concern.

Only the legal parent/guardian should be contacting the school

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY The learning process involves selecting and using resources to obtain additional information. Students are reminded to cite resources used in their assignments and not to plagiarize the work of others. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence and will be dealt with by the teacher and/or administration.

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY At FLHS we acknowledge creativity in many forms including writing, music, art and photography. We believe that any work created by individuals is solely their property. We also respect the ownership of the ideas of others during a quiz, test or exam.

Teacher’s Responsibility

Educate students on the Academic Honesty

Educate students on correct procedures for referencing and citing information

Careful planning, facilitation and supervision of tests and exams

Student’s Responsibility On tests and examinations:

Do not copy another person’s answers

Do not allow others to copy your work

Use only material or equipment that has been approved by the class teachers

Do not communicate with other students

On assignments or presentations:

Submit original work completed by you or your group

Credit the ideas/opinions of others (cite sources/information) from all print and electronic sources

Failure to comply with the above will be treated as Academic Misconduct and will result in serious consequences.

Academic Misconduct includes, but is not limited to:

Cheating or helping others cheat. Forms of cheating may include the use of unauthorized materials/services, sharing answers, communicating with others, but is not limited to: whispering, passing notes, signaling and exchanging papers.

HOMEWORK POLICY Doing homework results in higher grades and better understanding of the concepts taught in class. The time and amount of homework should increase with the grade level. Homework should include:

1. Work not finished 2. Work missed due to absenteeism 3. Long term assignments 4. Organization of notes, assignments 5. Review of each day’s work 6. Regular and ongoing studying for tests and examinations

Recommended daily homework times:

Grade 10: 60 – 90 minutes Grade 11 & 12: 90 minutes

It is beneficial for the parent/guardian and students to agree upon a suitable place and a regular time to complete homework. The parent/guardian is encouraged to check notes and assignments on a regular basis and to ensure that homework is completed and turned in.

REPORT CARDS – PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES Teachers will provide regular updates on student achievement. Interim reports are distributed at a mid-point in each semester and report cards sent out at the end of the semester. Parent/teacher conferences follow shortly after the interim report card. Please check the calendar for exact dates and times. Parents/guardians are encouraged to contact the school any time to discuss student progress. Students should accompany their parents/guardians to parent/teacher interviews.

APPEALS Students have the right to appeal final marks to the teacher, then the Learning Leader and finally Administration. Appeals have to be made no later than 24 hours after final marks are issued. Students must discuss a disputed grade with the teacher prior to seeking an appeal with the Learning Leader, then Administration.

EXAM WRITING POLICY All students are required to write their final exams at the scheduled exam time or receive a zero for the exam. Only in absolute extreme situations, such as emergency health concerns or death of an immediate family member, may an application for exemption be made by contacting an Assistant Principal. Please note: family holidays, or early leaves, will NOT be considered a legitimate reason for exemption. This policy applies to Diploma Exams as well as all other school exams.

Diploma Examinations cannot be rescheduled for students requesting leave. THERE IS NO EXCEPTION.

In order to protect exam integrity, exams are given only on the scheduled dates. Students who are absent for scheduled exams will be given a mark of zero. Administrators may make exceptions to the above guidelines when extenuating circumstances are involved and exceptional attendance, achievement and effort warrant it. Alternative measures may include an exemption from the exam, a parallel exam or an alternative assignment.

Based on the information provided by the school and with full knowledge that such a leave could prove detrimental to the student’s final grade, the decision to proceed with the leave is the responsibility of the parent/guardian in consultation with the student.

CALCULATOR EXAM POLICY All programmable calculators must be cleared before exams

Any approved programs may be used at the teacher’s discretion, and will be linked into the calculator when the student enters the exam room

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that their calculator is cleared or contains only those programs approved by the teacher

Any breach of this policy will be considered a violation of our school’s Academic Honesty Policy.
