All About The Mediterranean Islands3

So, half way into 2015, and the two major island destinationsin the Med have been through their ups and downs already. The demise of Cyprus Airways got the year off to a bad start

for Cyprus, but that was only a temporary blip for flight capacityto the island as other carriers rushed to pick up slots, and threeother airlines have applied for operating licences in recentmonths to start services from the destination.

Meanwhile, in Greece, the election of anti-austerity party Syrizaback in January and the Greek National Tourism Organisation inthe UK advising visitors to take some cash with them and not tosolely rely on credit cards or local ATMs has also ignited someconcerns among particular anxious Brits.

However, speaking to the tourist boards and operators, themarket looks strong. Cyplon Holidays hasn’t seen any dip indemand, and in fact has reported an increase in bookings, particularly for its Classical Tour of Greece; Sunvil has seen anincrease in family bookings to Greece following a few years ofsubdued demand; and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation hasunveiled plans to refocus its efforts on the UK market which isalready paying off with an increase in UK visitors for the first fourmonths this year, and summer bookings up on last year.

So, the islands in the Mediterranean are looking set to be a bigfavourite with the UK market this year, and to help you sell moreholidays to the destinations and rack up that extra commission,we have divided this year’s supplement into two features: onethat focuses on the larger islands in the Med, and the other thatlooks at the smaller, quieter isles.

In the first feature, we look at what’s on offer from operators toCyprus, Greece, Sardinia, Corsica and Sicily, while in the secondfeature, we look at the popular destination of Malta, and thesmaller islands in Greece and Italy.

I hope you enjoy this year’s All About The MediterraneanIslands supplement and look forward to your feedback.Angela CroninSupplements editor

CyprusThis year got off to a challenging startfor Cyprus tourism with the demise ofthe country’s flag carrier, CyprusAirways, after 68 years.

The ongoing economic crisis andincreasing competition from low-costssignalled the death knell for one ofEurope’s oldest airlines.

However, other airlines have steppedin to fill in the gaps including AegeanAirlines which announced earlier thisyear that it would increase the numberof destinations it serves from Cyprus to14. These include the introduction ofdirect daily services from Heathrow toLarnaca and the launch of a direct flightbetween Athens and Paphos.

Aegean’s summer 2015 schedulealso includes direct connections withHeraklion and Rhodes, while directconnections with Mykonos andSantorini will be added in July andAugust.

Also just last month, three carriersapplied for operating licences in Cyprus. One of these airlines is believed to be

Cobalt Air, which wants to operateflights from Cyprus to destinationsacross Europe, replacing the chasm leftby the demise of Cyprus Airways.

The heightened activity aroundpotential new flight capacity is alsoreflected by the Cyprus TourismOrganisation’s plans to place greateremphasis on the UK market, with moreof a focus on promoting events andwinter attractions.

Angelos Loizou, chairman of theCTO’s board of directors, says: “The UKhas always been an important marketfor Cyprus. For a decade we have beenlosing our share to other developingand cheaper destinations. We arepleased to see that in the first fourmonths of 2015, tourist arrivals fromthe UK have increased by 15.8%, withstrong forward bookings for the summer2015 period.

“The island has always beenpromoted as a ‘sun and sea’destination, but over the years, greatefforts have been made to highlight themany and varied niche products thatthe island offers.

“Our unique offering will result in thelengthening of the tourist season. Theseobjectives are to be achieved within thesustainability framework (we havepartnered with the Travel Foundation ona number of projects) of detailed actionplans and long term strategy relating toproduct development, quality andmarketing.

“We are encouraged by the results ofUK arrivals so far and will continue towork with our key partners in the UK tocontinue on this upward trend and toestablish the island as a year-roundtourist destination, with particularemphasis on the winter months.”

Events include the Harvest Festivalthat runs from the middle of Octoberthrough to November, and ZenobiaWeek.

The CTO has also reported summerbookings for this year 10% up on lastyear, with winter sales getting off to agood start too.

CTO UK director Orestis Rossides saidthe Cyprus tourism product keeps onimproving: “Together with Malta,Cyprus was voted as the Mediterranean

country with the cleanest beaches in asurvey by the European Union in 2015.

“Limassol was voted as one of theupcoming tourism resorts in a CNNsurvey as a result of its extensiveinfrastructural improvements, thecomplete restoration of the old Castlearea and the new Limassol Marina. While Larnaca has also improved itsinfrastructure, with a new seasidepromenade connecting the old townwith the trendy MacKenzie beach area.

“Meanwhile, Paphos has been namedas a European Capital of Culture in2017 and this will help to strengthenthe resort's image as a historic townand create a new European identity.”

As regards to emerging trends amongBrits visiting the island, Rossides says:“Both road cycling and mountain bikingare proving popular in the spring, golfin the off-peak months and with 500miles of well-sign-posted walking trails, trekking is proving very popular inspring and in the autumn.

“The newest cycling route is 42miles long and reaches a height of1,200 metres above sea level, startingat Limassol Marina and travellingthrough traditional villages in theTroodos mountains with panoramicviews, ending at Psilo Dentro in PanoPlatres.

“For wine lovers, there are sevenwine routes to choose from with smallboutique wineries producing award-winning wines.”

The CTO is keen to maintain itsstrong links with the trade to ensurethat the message gets out about therenewed focus on the UK market.

Rossides says: “Our sales officersundertake sales calls to travel agenciesall over the UK.

“They also arrange a number oftraining sessions with tour operatorsand agency consortia to highlight thenew developments of the island and inparticular to promote the island’swinter product.

“Educationals are organised in springand autumn for groups of up to 15agents. The itineraries are organised insuch a way so that agents canexperience the USPs of each region aswell as visit a selection of hotels. Someeducationals are themed for special-

interestoperators to sample niche products, such as golf and cycling.

“We also work with key partners andairlines on jointmarketingactivities toassist them withdeveloping theirown Cyprusprogrammes,” headds.

demand in August after a few yearswhen the family market has been moresubdued - we think this is down to acombination of people having a littlemore money to spend (or confidence tospend it) and the fact that low-costairline fares in August are veryexpensive, making charter-basedpackage holidays much better value.”

Aldemar Hotels the Greek island ofRhodes has welcomed the renovationand refurbishment of the five-star, all-inclusive Aldemar Resort Amilia Mare in Kalithea, Rhodes.

Olympic Holidays introducedisland-hopping around Greece morethan 10 years ago, and it has seen itspopularity soar, which has prompted theeastern Mediterranean specialist to list15 twin-centre combinations in itsSummer Sun brochure for this year.

Commercial director PhotisLambrianides says: "Island-hopping isnow among our most successfulproducts. Clients buy a week's packageto the main island and add on thesecond week's accommodation with atransfer supplement.

The operator recommends a numberof twin-centres including Kos withKalymnos; Santorini with Ios; and Corfuwith Paxos.

A particularly popular twin centre is

Rhodesand Symi. These two islands are just 23miles apart and are very close to theTurkish mainland.

Commercial director PhotisLambrianides says this combinationoffers an appealing contrast in holidaystyles as Symi is small with a scatteringof settlements and Rhodes is one of thelargest among the Greek islands.

On arrival, visitors are greeted withthe sight of many Italian-stylemansions dotted along the hillsidesaround pretty Yialos Harbour. SymiTown is a delight and a very peacefulhaven, and is a must visit as well as theNautical Museum and sixth-centuryMonastery of the Archangel MichaelPanormitis.

Accommodation from OlympicHolidays on Symi includes small hotelsof up to 56 rooms, along with a 25-room holiday village and a selection ofself-catering studios and apartments.

“After a week chilling out on ultra-relaxing Symi, a short sea trip putsclients in the busier holidayenvironment of Rhodes, where they canchoose from resorts large and small, but still with the ambience that makesGreek islands so special,” addsLambrianides.

Rhodes makes a striking contrast toSymi, with its golden sandy beaches, lively resorts such as Ixia and Faliraki, picturesque Lindos beneath its ancientacropolis, and historic capital RhodesTown with its medieval old quarter.

How much? Olympic Holidays offers a14-night twin-centre holiday, stayingone week in a one-bedroom apartmentat the Anastasia Apartments in Symi on

If your clients have done the big islands in theMediterranean, and they are looking for a more authenticexperience, then why don’t you suggest they seek outthe smaller options?

The islands in the Mediterranean come inall shapes and sizes, with an immensevariety of experiences for your clients to

enjoy.A lot of the smaller islands in the

Mediterranean, such as Skyros in Greece, offervisitors the chance to really have a taste of acompletely different way of life, where visitorsare invited to live like a Skyrian.

Alternatively, the island of Comino in theMaltese archipelago, has only one hotel andis car-free and is the perfect destination forholidaymakers looking to embrace the greatoutdoors and turn their back on the digitalworld for a few days.

Over the next few pages, we look at someof the smaller islands in the Mediterranean tohelp you sell the right holiday to your clientwho is looking for an alternative to the resortsof the larger neighbours.

MaltaMalta and its sister islands of Gozo andComino have been popular all-year-roundholiday destinations with Brits for many years, and it’s easy to see why.

While the islands offer the traditional sun,sea and sand escapes, you don’t have toscratch far below the surface to see that theyhave lots of attractions and activities to getinvolved in that make the destination aperfect holiday choice for holidaymakers ofany age.

The trade is really putting its faith in thedestination. Jet2 introduced five new directservices to Malta last month, with flights

operating twice weekly from Manchesterairport and once a week from Leeds Bradford,Glasgow, East Midlands and Newcastleairports.

Ryanair started a twice-weekly servicefrom East Midlands in April.

Olympic Holidays says the increase inflights from airlines have allowed the operatorto offer a wider selection of UK airports thanever before.

Commercial director, Photis Lambrianides, says: "Making use of the growing number ofscheduled services alongside charter flights,we are not tieing in our customers to thestandard one and two-week package holidaydurations. A three or four-night autumn breakin Malta is a highly attractive propositionaway from the main holiday season and theisland provides an excellent cultural escapeto the sun.”

The Malta Tourist Authority said the islandshad a record-breaking summer last year, andearly indications are good for this yearalready.

And the tourist office is hoping thathosting the Commonwealth Heads ofGovernment Meeting in November will helpto show the world what a spectaculardestination it is.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh andPrince Charles and Camilla are due to attendthe gathering as well so expect to see plentyof Malta in the headlines.

With that in mind, here is a round-up of atop 10 of things to suggest your clients do –royal or not – during their stay on the islands.

Capital oneValletta, the fortified capital of Malta, isconsidered by many to be one of the mostconcentrated historic areas in the world, which is one of the reasons why it has beennamed European Capital of Culture 2018.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Valletta isan historian’s delight, packed full of a treasuretrove of cobbled streets and centuries-oldbuildings that give visitors an insight intowhat life must have been like in the Maltesecity years ago.

Valletta was built by the Knights of St John(the Knights of Malta) after they nearly lostthe islands to the Ottoman Turks in the GreatSiege of 1565, so a sight that is top of themust-see bucket list is the Grand Master’sPalace, the former home of the Knights.Located in the heart of Valletta on RepublicStreet, the palace is filled with opulentpaintings, tapestries and armoury from theislands’ history, and the building itself is acharming, architectural inspiration.

The heart of Valletta is Republic Street, Triqir-Repubblika, from where the city’s manysights, shops and side streets can be explored.

The nearby St John’s Co-Cathedral is ashining example of Baroque architecture, withevery inch of the building interiors covered inmarble, gold and paint, and the walls adornedby exquisite tapestries by Rubens and Poussinand paintings by Caravaggio.

During the day, just simply strolling aroundthe city is enough to stimulate all the senses. While there are more historical sights andsounds than you could shake the proverbial

By night, head down to the waterfront anddine al fresco on some Maltese traditionaldishes and local wine, while you gaze in aweat the super yachts in the harbour.

So, a perfect day trip during a summerholiday escape, Valletta also works well as acity break.

2. Marvellous MdinaInhabited and fortified since the Bronze Ageand was once the Roman centre of Malta,Mdina is a medieval walled town, which hasbarely changed in centuries.

Perched on a hill, the town commandsbreath-taking views of the island, andmeandering around the city’s labyrinth ofstreets is like taking a step back in historywhere visitors are surrounded by sublimemedieval and baroque architecture, religioussights and quaint cafés and restaurants.

3. Not one, but Three CitiesMention Malta, and images of colourfullypainted boats in the Grand Harbour oftenspring to mind, and hopping on board one ofthese quaint little boasts is often the bestway to explore the three harbour towns ofVittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea (L-Isla) andCospicua (Bormla).

A symbol of Malta’s military importance, from medieval times all the way through toWorld War II and more recently, the 1970s,

when the British navy had their ships basedthere. The best way to experience themagnitude of these fortresses is by hoppingon a cruise around the harbour.

Back on dry land, stroll along the quaintnarrow streets of the Three Cities and alongthe newly restored Vittoriosa Waterfont togain a deeper insight into Maltese history andits fascinating culture.

4. Temple runLocated in the southwest of the island just500 metres apart, the temples of Hagar Qimand Mnajdra were built between 3600BC and2500BC, making them much older thanStonehenge.

The site at Hagar Qim consists of a centralbuilding and the remains of at least two morestructures. The building has multiple rooms, flooring, roofs, elaborate doorways, stonefurniture and statues and are a mightyimpressive sight to see.

At Mnajdra, there are three temples next toeach other, and again, like Hagar Qim have anintricate complex of rooms.

The South Temple at Mnajdra is aligned ina manner that it marks the position of sunriseon the first day of each season.

5. A complex issueBuilt by the same masterminds thatconstructed the temples of Hagar Qim andMnajdra between 3600BC and 2500BC, theHypogeum is an extraordinary undergroundburial complex with numerous chambers cutinto solid rock. Like the temples, the

CLASSIC COLLECTION HOLIDAYS hasadded the Aeolian islands of Vulcanoand Salina to its Italy programme forthe very first time. As the name suggests, there’s lots of

evidence of volcanic happenings on theisland of Vulcano. The ancient Romansthought it to be the chimney of the firegod Vulcan's workshop, and today, theisland has embraced its volcaniclandscapes by encouraging visitors tobathe in its therapeutic mud baths andhot springs. The main attraction, however, remains the Fossa di Vulcano,

the steaming volcano that towers overthe island's northeastern shores. In stark contrast to Vulcano, Salina

has a lush, green landscape, despitebeing made up of six volcanoes, thelast one of which erupted some 13,000years ago. The island is home to morethan 400 different types of plants, including the cultivation of grapes, olives and capers.Classic is featuring three properties

Greece

So we all know about the larger islandsin Greece, such as Corfu, Crete,Zakinthos, Rhodes and Kos, and overrecent years, the smaller islands in theCyclades, including Mykonos, Paros,Naxos and Ios that have been thepopular rites-of-passage experiences forbackpackers from all of the world, havestarted to take a bit of the premium,package-holiday market. But what about the smaller islands

that are just a stone’s throw from theirsizeable neighbours that would make agreat twin-centre experience and giveyour clients the chance to experiencethe more authentic side of Greece?

Paxi and Antipaxi

Brits have been flocking to Corfu in theIonian Sea for decades now, and it’seasy to see why. It’s stunning Venetianarchitecture, lush green landscapes, beautiful beaches and top-notch hotelsdraw the crowds, but if you are lookingfor something a little bit more laid-back, then why not nip over to thelittle islands of Paxi and Antipaxi.Achingly stylish and sophisticated,

the tiny island of Paxi, just locatedsouth of Corfu, welcomes the yachtingcrowd during the summer months whoare sailing around the Ionian islands attheir own pace. Visitors head to Paxi for its

wonderful beaches, and hop over to theuninhabited islet of Antipaxi for somemore beach time – think sandybeaches, and Caribbean-blue sea.

Paradise it most definitely is.

Skopelos and Skiathos

Fans of the hit movie Mamma Mia willbe familiar with the islands of Skopelosand Skiathos as they provided thebackdrop for a number of the scenes inthe smash-hit film; in fact, lots ofscenes were shot on Skopelos's KastaniBeach.Olympic Holidays commercial

director Photis Lambrianides saysMamma Mia really put these two Greekislands in the holiday spotlight.“People who saw it were no doubt wonover by the location scenes. They aretypical of many Greek islands and aworld away from busy resorts such asFaliraki on the larger island of Rhodes.“Skopelos is twice the size of

neighbouring Skiathos, but muchquieter, meaning the two islands pairup well in a twin-centre. With itsflower-filled courtyards, pretty cobbledstreets and hillsides covered ingreenery that are well suited towalkers, the island paints a realpicture.Lambrianides adds: “Skiathos has

more than 60 beaches scattered aroundits attractive coastline and a cluster ofresorts ranging from cosmopolitanSkiathos Town to picturesque Achliadesand Kolios. Attractions includeKounistra and Evangelistra monasteriesand the old port and fish market ofSkiathos Town.”

Naxos and the SmallerCyclades isles

The largest of the Cyclades islands,Naxos is a key ingredient in the island-hopping Cycladic recipe that mixeswell with Mykonos, Santorini, Parosand Ios.But if you want to stray off this well-

trodden ferry route, then check out thefour tiny islands just a stone's throwfrom Naxos. These are, in the order in which the

ferry line stops at each: Iraklia,Schinoussa, Koufonissia and Donoussa. Iraklia is THE place to head to if you

desire a taste of what Greece was likemany years ago. There are only 115inhabitants on the island, the majorityof which work in fishing or agriculture. So if you want to spend long lazy

days on empty beaches and quietnights at the small cosy tavernas
