All About The Mediterranean Islands3

Every year, Post Office Travel Money releases a Holiday CostsBarometer, which is a guide to the most affordable places toholiday, based on a variety of items holidaymakers buy when

they are in resort, such as a cup of coffee, a meal, suntan lotion or aglass of wine.

This year, the survey found that UK visitors to the MediterraneanIslands will fork out up to 20% less than a year ago in some of themost popular destinations, which is good news for Britons and abrilliant fact to remember for agents selling the Mediterranean.

It is also great to see how much the travel industry puts faith in islanddestinations such as Malta, with the Institute of Travel and Tourismholding its annual conference at the Hilton Malta earlier this month.

It’s the second time in four years the hotel has hosted a major travelindustry conference with the ABTA Convention taking place there in2010. This just goes to show that Malta’s hard work of carving out areputation as an excellent conference and incentive destination hasreally paid off, and as ITT chairman Steven Freudmann comments“themost successful conferences are those where the destination reallywants us and Malta was delighted to host the ITT Conference 2014”.

And as for the Greek Islands, the national tourist organisation ispredicting a bumper year as it expects to welcome a record 18.5million arrivals this year, which will hopefully equate to €13 billioneuros in tourism revenue.

The government has also decided to extend the opening hours ofthe country’s 33 most popular museums and archaeological sites from8am-8pm, which is guaranteed to help boost the income from tourism.

In this year’s All About the Mediterranean Islands Supplement, weare taking a close look at Malta, the Greek Islands, and for the firsttime, the Italian destinations of Sicily and Sardinia with some advicefrom the experts on the best places for family holidays and for thoselooking for something a little different out of season.

These stunning islands have a lot to offer Brits looking for an alternativeto the traditional Med holiday break, with Sicily having culture, food andan active volcano to attract enquiring minds, while Sardinia knows a thingor two about providing the perfect upmarket, beach holiday with fine foodand wine, and a number Roman ruins to explore too.

So, enjoy reading the supplement, and I hope it gives you lots of ideason destinations and resorts to promote to your clients.

10All About The Mediterranean Islands

Greece has been through enormousupheaval since the beginning of therecession back in 2008.

The Greek government-debt crisis wasthe central focus of the Eurozone crisis, which saw the Greek economy plunge intoa sharp downturn, and Greek people taketo the streets in protest at the crumblingstate of the economy which had a hugeimpact on wages and the standard of livingin the country.

And despite filling lots of newspapercolumn inches and TV news broadcasts, concerns about the economy didn’t reallyregister on UK travellers minds with ourlove affair with this amazing country notshowing any signs of waning.

And it looks like 2014 is shaping up to bea record year for Greek tourism, with arecord 18.5 million arrivals and €13 billioneuros in tourism revenue expected.

More good news for visitors to Greece isthat 33 of the country’s most popularmuseums and archaeological sites are set toextend their opening hours. From 1 April untilthe end of October, visitors will be able tovisit from 8am until 8pm, seven days a week.

Zenobia Week will celebrate everything that is great aboutthe ship wreck and the diving spots around Cyprus

Best of the restHere is a round-up of latest news from operators and tourist boards

CyprusThe Cyprus Tourism Organisation has launched a newscheme, the Cyprus Tourism Quality Label, which seeks torecognise excellent quality, both in established areas suchas health and safety and hospitality, and ‘new’ areas, forexample environmental sustainability and the support oflocal communities.

Cyprus is the first destination in the world to setmandatory sustainability standards for hotels, which meansevery hotel operating in Cyprus must now take action toprotect the environment and support their local community.

The new minimum standards are part of a widerprogramme of reforms from the Cyprus Tourism Organisation(CTO), the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) andthe Travel Foundation to make Cyprus a leading destinationfor sustainable tourism. Because of the scheme, hotels inCyprus will now be required to demonstrate sustainablebusiness practices that will ultimately lead to cost savingsand a more authentic Cypriot offering for their guests.

FestivalsVisitors to Cyprus this June are being encouraged to get“wrecked” as part of the island’s Zenobia Week festival.

Zenobia is Cyprus’ best-known ship diving site. A Swedishbuilt cargo ferry that capsized and sank off the coast ofCyprus in June 1980, the wreck offers a number of

opportunities to divers of all abilities, from a simple 16metre dive along her starboard side to extremely advanceddives within the lower car deck and engine room.

The Zenobia Week festival, which runs from 23-30 June, aims to raise awareness of the site to divers and non-divers,who will be able to enjoy free cruises in glass bottomedboats to the site, an underwater photography competition,an exhibition of artefacts from the wreck and art showsfocusing on photography and painting associated with thesea. The organisers are also working with local dive schoolsto offer 20% discounts on trips and the chance to test outunderwater scooters for free.

Cyprus offers one of the longest diving seasons in theMediterranean with year-round sunshine, warm seatemperatures ranging from 27 to 16 ºC and good underwatervisibility. In early 2013, four large fishing vessels and anumber a reef poles were scuttled off the coast of Cyprus aspart of a €1.5m project to create five new marine parks, encouraging the growth and protection of marine life aroundCyprus, and bringing the island’s wreck diving sites to 16.For more information visit www.zenobiaweek.com
