WHAT’S NEW

WHAT’S NEWWith luxury operators looking to raise the stakes when it comes to offeringthat exclusive experience, the future looks bright for agents who know how

Q&A

23

CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME BACKGROUNDON SUNSET FARAWAY? HOW DID YOUSTART THE BUSINESS 35 YEARS AGO?I started Sunset Travel in 1980/81 in Stockwell,London SW9 to service the Mauritian travelcommunity as during my university days Iorganised charter flights to Mauritius, hence mylove for travel. In 1983 on an inaugural AirMauritius Boeing 747 service, I met agentleman Stuart Wild who indirectlychallenged me to launch a brochure to theIndian Ocean and in 1984/5 I launched my firsteight-page brochure as a forerunner to a 12page one.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST DESTINATIONYOU FEATURED?Mauritius was the first destination I featuredwhich included the then limited number ofhotels available and also featured a couple ofprivate beach villas.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHERE ANDWHEN TO EXPAND?The following year 1985-86, I introducedReunion Island and the Seychelles, which wasthen a well-sought-after destination andwith BA and Air France, I was able tooffer twin-centres with Mauritius and as suchSunset became a well-known Indian Oceanoperator where we were offeringmulti-duration holidays instead of the usualseven to 14-night stays.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE DEFININGMOMENTS FOR YOU OVER THE LAST 35 YEARS?1994 was the defining moment as it was thatyear we expanded to new premises in ClaphamPark Road leaving the retail office at Stockwell.Soon after that, I was approached by RogerWharton, the UK and European director of salesof Sun International, who owned four hotels inMauritius and South Africa to create a jointventure brochure known as Sunset SunInternational Collection and which was wellreceived by ABTA agents.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHANGEIN THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY OVER THELAST 35 YEARS?Believe the internet has revolutionised the wholetravel spectrum.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU MOST ABOUTYOUR BUSINESS, AND WHAT WOULDYOU LIKE TO DO TO MAKE IT EASIER TOOPERATE?The uncertainty that the internet has created. What I mean is that ABTA and the CAA havekept the package travel market alive with strictguidelines to protect the travelling public but theproliferation of bed banks and cheap flightoperators working on almost zero margin havebeen a challenge. As such people bookingoutside the bona fide tour operator have noprotection.

HOW HAVE CLIENTS TASTES CHANGEDOVER THE YEARS, AND HOW HAVEYOU HAD TO CHANGE TO CATER FORTHEIR NEW DEMANDS?Once again with the internet, clients havebecome more demanding in the delivery ofservice from tour operators such as Sunsetwho specialise in tailor-making, multi-centreholidays which does take time instead of asingle centre.

HOW CAN YOU SEE THE INDUSTRYCHANGING OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS?Difficult question. I believe 10 days or 10months are already too long for a change letalone 10 years. May be in 10 years, we may beable to fly to New York in one hour if the newsupersonic being considered by AirbusIndustries gets off the drawing board?

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BESTTHREATS TO THE INDUSTRY?The constant consolidation by a fewnon-British organisation buying middle to biggroup and then selling a unheard margin toremove the competition and once the road isclear - may be in 10 years? - they willdominate the industry and that will be at thedetriment of the public.
