 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

 2. Remove the cowl panel.

 3. Remove the battery and battery tray.

 4. Remove the ACL (Air Cleaner) outlet pipe assembly.

26. NOTICE: Do not use a prying device or separator fork between the balljoint and the wheel knuckle. Damage tothe balljoint or balljoint boot may result. Only use the pry bar by inserting it into the lower arm body opening.

NOTICE: Use care when releasing the lower arm and wheel knuckle into the resting position or damage to the balljoint seal and/or Constant Velocity (CV) joint boot may occur.

39. Special Tool(s): Retainer, Torque Converter 307-566.

40. If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carry out thetransmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning.

Installation

All vehicles

NOTICE: Prior to installing a new, re-manufactured or overhauled transmission, clean the transmission fluid coolertubes. Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.

NOTE: If the transmission was overhauled, or if installing a new transmission and the transmission fluid cooler has

not been flushed, flush the transmission fluid cooler at this time. Clean the transmission-mounted transmission fluidcooler tubes by hand.

 1. Material: Multi-Purpose Grease Motorcraft(R) XL-5 (aerosol) and/or CRC(R) SL3151

 2. NOTICE: If the transmission is not positioned on the dowel pins, damage to the transmission may occur.

    If the dowel pins were pulled out of the engine block during removal, install new dowel pins in the engine block.

 3. Support the transmission with a transmission jack. Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with asafety strap.

    General Equipment: Transmission Jack.

 4. NOTE: Align the index-mark made during removal.

    Position the transmission behind the engine and remove the Torque Converter Retainer.

    Special Tool(s): Retainer, Torque Converter 307-566.

15. NOTE: Remove the seal protector before completely installing the halfshaft.

    Special Tool(s): Differential Oil Seal Protector (pair) 205-461.

    -  Stage 1: Tighten the lower nut to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).

    -  Stage 2: Tighten the upper nut to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

    -  Stage 3: Tighten the lower nut to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

38. Install the battery and battery tray.

39. Install the ACL (Air Cleaner) outlet pipe assembly.

40. Install the cowl panel.

41. Adjust the selector lever cable.

42. Fill the transmission with clean transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill See: AutomaticTransmission/Transaxle > Procedures > Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill.

43. After completing the repairs perform the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure.

44. If a new solenoid body is installed, the solenoid body strategy must be updated. Refer to Solenoid Body StrategyDownload See: Automatic Transmission/Transaxle > Procedures > Solenoid Body Strategy Download.
