Founded in 1969 by Vittorio Avanzini, Newton Compton was a pioneer in the paperback sector, launching its fa-mous series of classic nonfiction, fiction and poetry at highly competitive prices in the 1970s.The year 1991 saw the launch of “I Mammut”, a series featuring the collected or complete works of celebrated authors: its success continues today, the colourful covers now embellished with stylish caricatures, and with the birth of “I MiniMammut”
A real challenge for Newton Compton came in 1992, with the publication of the “100 pagine 1000 lire”, slim volumes which sold more than 60.000.000 of copies all over Italy. Newton Compton cultivates a passion for Italian history, traditions and regional legends with volumes on Italian popular culture, gastronomy and legends.
The publisher’s non-fiction books are shared between two main series, “I volti della storia” and “Controcorrente”. In the first one, Newton Compton had great success with Denis Avey’s Auschwitz. Ero il numero 220543 (a disturbing memoir by a British soldier who infiltrated the concentration camp) Sam Pivnik’s L’ultimo sopravvissuto (the true story of a jewish boy who escaped from a nazi camp, Eva Schloss, Sopravvissuta ad Auschwitz (a Story of Heathbreak and Survival by the Stepsister of Anne Frank), Thomas Harding, Il comandante di Auschwitz (The true Story of the German Jew who caught the Kommandant of Auschwitz) and 12 anni schiavo by Solomon Northup which featured the film 12 Years Slave winning an Academy Award in 2014 for Best Picture.
In “Controcorrente”, among journalistic reports which explore the borderlands of the news, investigating particularly sensitive topics, from the world of politics to religious debate and from crime reportage to reconstructions of controversial events, has had a great success La repubblica delle stragi impunite, an essay about the political murders and slaughters in 60s and 70s in Italy, written by Ferdinando Imposimato, a judge and an eyewitness of important processes such as Aldo Moro kidnapping and killing in 1978.
The invaluable illustrated volumes “Grandi Manuali Newton”, ranging from recipes to drawing and from spirituality to scien-ce, have been consistently popular. Just one name for all: Cucinare con la nutella by Paola Balducchi, sold in France, Holland and Portugal.
To meet the needs of its loyal readers, and to provide an increasingly wide range of reading matter, the publishing house also covers foreign and italian fiction in its Anagramma, Vertigo and Nuova Narrativa Newton Collection. Two Newton Compton authors won the Bancarella Prize: Marcello Simoni in 2012 with Il mercante di libri maledetti, a medieval thriller set in Italy, France and Spain, which has already been sold in sixteen countries and Anna Premoli (thanks to our at-tention to self-publishing) in 2013 with Ti prego lasciati odiare. Marcello Simoni has never left the top of the bestseller list since the publication of his new novel, L’Abbazia dei cento delitti.
Alongside established italian and foreign authors such as Federica Bosco, Andrea Frediani, Massimo Lugli, Simon Scarrow, Stuart MacBride, Harry Sidebottom, Karen Swan and Lisa J. Smith, Newton Compton has launched a number of new suc-cessful authors: Franco Matteucci, G.L. Barone, Sara Tessa, Cassandra Rocca, Daniela Farnese, Valeria Luzi, Elisa Gentile, Patrisha Mar and Marzia Bisognin (with her debut, La casa dei sogni sold in a preempt offer to Atria), Jessica Sorensen, Rebecca Donovan and Emma Chase, Kirsty Moseley and A. G. Riddle. The year 2007 saw the launch of the fascinating series “101”: these colourful, youthful, witty guides to “101 things to do at least once in your life” are now one of the publishing house’s greatest successes. At first the series concentrated on unusual guides of particular cities and regions, but more recently it has been also reaching out to history, psychology, health. A second, expanded series, “1001”, was launched in 2009.
Since July 2010 Newton Compton has also been active on the ebook market, and has won a leading position in digital publi-shing, thanks to the numerous classics in its catalogue and its practice of issuing many new books simultaneously in paper and digital formats.
First days of March 2013 have seen the coming out of the most stunning editorial phenomenon of the last 20 years: the new series “Live”. Books at the price of 0,99 euros, classic and contemporary authors and new novels of Italian bestselling au-thors, that have made a real revolution in the market.
As a great independent publisher, Newton Compton has already achieved a resounding success with its books for 9,90 euros, setting a new editorial standard, and now is a leader among Italian publishers with anti-crisis books that bring back people in bookshops. As an immediate result, September 2015 chart has 4 Newton Compton books among the first 15.

At last it’s the day of the interview, and Sara absolutely must get through this time. It’s two years since she graduated, and she’s had little success in her career or her emotional life. And here she is, desperately late for the appointment, teetering on over-high heels and out of breath (thanks to an alarm clock which doesn’t ring when it should, an unexpected rainstorm and a late bus) under the tall building which is the home of Inside Look, the new magazine specializing in fashion, gossip and a whole range of titillating subjects of which her sister Virginia is an avid reader. This day which

Octavian is one step away from absolute power. In less than ten years he has eliminated all his adversaries, one after another. There is only one man left who can challenge his unbridled ambition, a personality so infl uential and powerful that the future Augustus has had to make him his brother-in-law and share his em-pire with him: Mark Antony. But now Caesar’s young heir feels strong enough to oppose him openly, partly through propaganda, advised by the crafty Maecenas,
and partly with his armies, under the command of the loyal Agrippa. The
showdown comes closer. While in the east Mark Antony strengthens his ties to the Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra, in the west Octavian carries out a series of campaigns which establish him as a leader as successful as his rival and extend the frontiers of his realm. Then the time comes for the fi nal encounter, a duel for which the two protagonists have been carefully preparing for years, while concealing their real intentions. The Battle of Actium, one of the most important confl icts in Roman history, will not only decide the destiny of the empire, but determine who will be master of the world.

One night Claps hears that Giacomo Riondino has escaped, leaving a trail of blood behind him. Seven years earlier, Claps had worked with the police on the Riondino case: two women had been kidnapped, kept prisoner, tortured and killed. The murderer had been caught, but tests had revealed a disturbing fact: Riondi-
no had two diff erent personalities, which alternated in controlling his actions during the course of the day.
At his trial the defendant had been judged non respon-sible for his actions and sent to a psychiatric institution; then, after six years of therapy, he had been deemed no longer dangerous to himself or others and transferred to a rehabilitation centre. That was where he had esca-ped from. Now Claps would have to work with Sensi on another manhunt. A very unusual manhunt this time, because Riondino is close at hand, much closer than you might think...

A guided tour through the traditional Italian dishes and
the main quality products, travelling along the roads of
Italy’s wines and fl avours, among curiosities and legen-
ds. Italian specialities renowned at home and abroad,
whose fl avours are not to be missed and which are worth
trying at least once in a lifetime. The culinary tourist
is not just a consumer who wants to know where to ‘go
and spend’, but a student of the subject, who loves to
learn and investigate the topics in question, and perhaps
display his or her knowledge of them in company. The
various guidebooks that judge restaurants with their
stars and forks are no longer suffi cient to meet this
need on their own. The present book, by contrast, is
complete and entertaining, and will be an invaluable
tool for getting to know the parts of the Italian culinary
tradition that are still secret.
