Welcome to Bowness The move to high school is a big event in your life. At Bowness High School (BHS) we want to make the transition to high school as smooth as possible. This Owner’s Manual is designed to take some of the stress out of the decision you will be making as you plan your three-year high school learning experience. Your interests and goals should guide the decisions that you make. At Bowness High School our aim is to further develop the skills you need in order for you to be successful. Some suggestions to help you make a positive and achievable high school learning plan are:

• Visit the BHS website to become familiar with the school culture and programs offered.

• Download the full BHS Official Course Guide available online.

• Attend the BHS open house and other information evenings.

• Talk to your parents and teachers about your decisions and course selections.

• Talk to the Bowness High School counsellor who will meet with you at your grade 9 school.

• Talk to people that you know who go to Bowness High School and ask them about their experiences.

When exploring the course offering at Bowness High School you will discover course pathways that lead to various post-secondary options, such as university, college or technical schools, and some that support the transition directly into the world of work. The decisions you make in selecting the courses that suit your learning strengths and interests will help map out your future learning.

The Credit System

Each course in high school has been assigned a credit value that is determined by Alberta Education. To earn credits you must achieve a mark of 50% or higher in the course. Generally, most courses offered at Bowness High School are 5 credits, but this can vary from 1 to 5 credits. Be sure to check Bowness High School Official Course Guide for the credits awarded for each course. Some important points about the credit system are that you:

• Can only earn credits in a course once. • Must receive a mark of 50% to be able to proceed to the next

course in the sequence. • Are expected to register in courses that will earn you 40 credits

in grade 10.

Course Numbering High school courses are organized in sequences. Each course is assigned a number that indicate the grade level as well as the level of academic rigour. All core subject areas have more than one course sequence offered. The differences in the courses are indicated by the last digit of the course number. For example:

• -1 (10-1, 20-1 and 30-1). • -2 (10-2, 20-2 and 30-2). • -3 (10-3, 20-3, and 30-3). • 14 and 24. • -4 (10-4, 20-4 and 30-4). These courses are Knowledge and Employability (K&E) courses and lead to a Certificate of High School Achievement.

You can tell if a course is a grade 10 level course when the course number starts with a 10 (for example 10-1, 10C, 14, 15). Likewise, grade 11 courses start with the number 20 and grade 12 courses start with the number 30.

Prerequisites You must earn at least 50% in a course in order to advance to the next course in the sequence. For example, this means that in order to move to English Language Arts (ELA) 20-1 you must earn a grade of 50% in ELA 10-1.

Planning your Courses Bowness High School offers students a wide variety of core and elective courses. When considering your elective courses, you can choose from Fine and Performing Arts, Second Languages, Career and Technology Studies (CTS) and several locally developed courses, such as our very popular Yoga class. Check the Bowness High School Official Course Guide for a full listing of the courses offered. When planning for your high school learning, it is important to consider the following:

• Select your core courses first. Core courses are English Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education in grade 10. • Select the elective courses you wish to take – remember in grade 10 you are expected to have a full course load of 40 credits. • If you are concerned about the courses you wish to take it is a

Creating a Learning Plan Some things to consider when making a high school learning plan: Make sure your plan meets the requirements for the Diploma or Certificate you wish to earn at the end of your three years at Bowness High School. Ask yourself, does this plan work towards my learning strengths and allow me to achieve my personal goals? Do you have the necessary prerequisite requirements for the courses you have selected? Considered the post-secondary admission requirements for the program you wish to get into after high school or your employment aspirations.

English Language Arts Bowness’ English Language Arts (ELA) program aims to provide you with an understanding and appreciation of a wide range of literary texts as well as to enable you to effectively use language. The ELA program of studies focuses on: listening, reading, representing, speaking, viewing, and writing. The diagram below illustrates the progression through the ELA course sequences.

English Language Arts 10-1, 20-1 and 30-1 allows you to explore literature and develop strong communication skills. In this course sequence you will analyze and respond to various complex literatures and refine your ability to communicate how the literature relates to cultural and societal issues in a Canadian and/or global context(s). If you take this course you will spend much of your study time analysing and creating a variety of literary texts. It is recommended for students considering careers that require strong reading and

communication skills and for those who may be interested in post-secondary education. This course sequence requires you to write a diploma examination at the 30 level and meets Alberta Education High School Diploma requirements. English Language Arts 30-2 is designed to give you a deeper understanding of relevant materials and enable you to communicate clearly with others. In ELA 30-2, you will study different types of texts, written at various levels, that explore issues in Canadian and global contexts. This course sequence is similar to the -1 course sequence, however, with less emphasis on literary analysis. Consequently, it is designed for students considering careers that require basic reading and communication skills and for those interested in a range of post-secondary education or other opportunities. This course sequence requires you to write a diploma examination at the 30 level and meets Alberta Education High School Diploma requirements. Not all post-secondary programs accept ELA 30-2, so check the entrance requirements for any program you’re considering. English Language Arts 10-4, 20-4 and 30-4 is designed to develop clear language and communication skills that will support your goals for work and life. In Knowledge and Employability ELA 30-4, you will be shown additional strategies for success using materials that have practical applications and support your reading comprehension, communication and other occupational skills. This course sequence is designed for students who may transition directly into the world of work, pursue further training/courses or other opportunities that may not require post-secondary education. Students who take ELA 30-4 will earn a Certificate of High School Achievement upon graduation.

You must successfully complete Social Studies 30-1 or 30-2 if you

wish to earn an Alberta Education High School Diploma.

Sample Bell Schedule

Below is the bell schedule for the 2013/2014 school year. This schedule may change next year, but it does give you an idea of what you might typically see at BHS. Your day will be broken up into 4 periods that are typically 70 minutes long. A 5 minute warning bell signals the transition to the next class. Learning Enhancement Time (LET) is embedded into the schedule to allow you to get academic help or spend extra time on projects. Our hope is that you will take responsibility for making use of the time in ways that best enhances your learning. Our goal with LET is to graduate students who know what they need to do to be successful. Bowness High School follows a semester system. You will typically take four courses each semester. Semester 1: September — January Semester 2: February —June

Bowness High School guidance

counsellors provide support with academic, career and personal development for all students. Our guidance counsellors will

assist you with your course selections to meet your interests and academic goals throughout high school. Our counsellors will

be visiting your school before your course selections are due to

answer all of your questions.

What if You Fail a Class?

If you do not earn the 50% minimum grade requirement to advance in the course sequence, you do have a few options:

• Repeat the course with the goal of successfully earning a passing grade. This may require you to take summer school.

• The Credit Recovery option allows you to complete the section(s) of the course in which you were unsuccessful instead of having to repeat the whole course. For example, if in Science 10 you were successful in the biology, chemistry and climate units but failed the physics unit, the Credit Recovery option provides you the opportunity to complete the physics unit in the hopes of obtaining a passing grade. This option requires your teacher’s recommendation and is not available to a student who has failed multiple units in the course. Additionally, students must complete the Credit Recovery within a specified period of time that is negotiated with the teacher. Generally, students complete the Credit Recovery program by the end of the semester utilizing the time available during the examination breaks in January or June.

• Changing course sequences may be an option in some cases. This option allows you to advance to the next level in an alternate course sequence. For example, if you obtained a mark of 45% in Social Studies 10-1, you can advance to Social Studies 20-2. Once you successfully complete the higher course in the alternate stream, in this example that would be the Social Studies 20-2 course, you will be granted retroactive credits in the prerequisite course, in this example Social Studies 10-2. Please note this option is not available to students who have a mark below 40% in the course.

Tip#1: Select a course sequence that emphasizes your strengths.

Tip # 2:

Ask your grade nine teacher about course recommendations.

This will help guide you to a course that optimizes your

strengths.
