FROM THE PRINCIPAL Hi everyone. The term is going well and still more to come! CSU Regional Development Program TCS would like to extend a big thankyou to Charles Sturt University for their generous donation as part of their regional Development program. These funds enabled our school to purchase data loggers so that we can run our science classes more effectively with the latest technologies. We now have a State of the Art Science Lab with State of the Art equipment! Tell Them From Me Student Survey Before the end of term we will be giving all students from Year 4 to Year 12 the opportunity to give their opinion about our school. They will participate in an on-line survey that is a tool for evaluating our school’s impact on student engagement, school climate and classroom effectiveness. The students’ voice is a vital component of our evaluation of our school. It is essential that we know how the students feel about their school. In this way we can ensure that our planning takes into account their ideas about how we can improve our beautiful school even further.

We will be sending out a letter shortly explaining the project. Parent and Community Survey During the next week or so you will be receiving a call from Mrs Mel Gleeson, our Community Liaison Officer asking for your opinion on our school. She will be asking questions about what we do well and what you think we could do better. Please take the time to take her call and give her your honest opinions. We are not afraid of hearing your comments, even if they are not positive, as we truly want to make our school the best it can be for our students. We are totally committed to improving our school and we need your help to do that. Quality Literacy at TCS TCS continues to run quality literacy and numeracy programs. Our programs are explicit and systematic. Every child’s progress is monitored and their needs catered for on an individual basis. Our outstanding results speak for themselves:

Early Action for Success – K-2 with L3 Reading to Learn Years 3-6 Corrective Reading in small groups MULTILIT – Individual intervention

If you would like more information do not hesitate to call in. I am always proud to show people our great school. Finally ........ As always, my door is open. Do not hesitate to come in and see me if you have a concern. No problem is too hard to solve if we work together. All the best

Anne Holden

English Extended Response On the subject of English, a Year 9 student composed the following in his Yearly English extended response section of the examination. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. The response section asked the students to write a letter to Walt Disney proposing a new children’s film. In their letter they were to outline the role of the villain as that has been the focus of our topic this term, Vile Villains. 10th November 2014 Dear Mr Disney, I am writing you this letter because I have a brilliant idea for a movie!! Now let me tell you about it. The movie’s name is ‘All but Evil’. The movie is about a mad English teacher who has a fetish for watches. She will do anything to get herself a new watch. She also loves to torture her students with her terrible jokes and awful French. She really does have a passion for giving her students a hard time and robbing jewellery stores for those expensive watches she longs for. This evil English teacher thought herself to be unstoppable. She even called herself ‘The Time Catcher’. All of a sudden out of nowhere a brave man stepped up to her. This brave man even worked in the same school as her. After this courageous Math teacher finally caught on that she was The Time Catcher, he swore to steal all her watches and keep them for himself. He called himself The Bald Bandit. He is an evil genius and loves to scheme. Some will say he is a menace. These two villains clashed both taking hostages. They were too dumb to realise that both only cared about the very expensive watches. Then out of nowhere a brave intelligent student came along and started using the wrong grammar while trying to figure out the circumference with Pythagoras’ Theorem. Both villains crumbled to their knees because they could not stand it. The brave student knew that and he led them straight into the trap and locked them up for good. Everyone threw the brave student a party. Yours Sincerely Reed Heterick P.S. The characters in this story need to remain nameless due to the real life people they are based on.

Assistant Principals’ Report

School Leaders Election Day On Tuesday, students from Year 5 presented their electoral speeches inviting and enticing voters to give their vote to them. The students who bravely nominated themselves included: Anna Anderson, Sophia Hayden, Cameron Cook, Chloe Peters, Daizie Dolphin-Smith, Emily Purseglove, Andreas Gordon and Claudia St-Clair.

Everyone was impressed with the level of responsibility, maturity and sincerity expressed in the student’s speeches. Some teachers even had a tear in their eye! Such moving words, from the mouths of babes reinforced the quality and integrity of our students here at T.C.S.

Congratulations to all students involved, we are all so proud of you. You all did an impressive job and it was extremely difficult for all voters to make a decision.

The new leaders for 2015 will be announced at our major Presentation Day which will be held on Friday 12th of December.

School Supplies 2015 Families, we ask that you start thinking about school supplies for 2015. From next year, students from Years 3-6 will be required to supply their own pencils, pens, rulers, pencil case etc. We suggest that this could be an ideal Christmas gift or stocking filler for your child/ren. School Swimming Scheme Just a reminder to families that we will be conducting the School Swimming Program for K-6 running from the 1st – 11th of December. Students will be required to pay entry into the pool if they do not have a season pass. Working Bee Families are welcomed and encouraged to attend an upcoming working bee for the primary playground. We will need assistance with planting and also shoveling mulch at the base of our tunnel. Stay tuned for confirmation of dates!

Packing Healthy Lunchboxes Lunch and snacks are a great opportunity to offer a range of foods from each of the food groups. Here are some tips to help pack a healthy lunchbox. Include foods from a variety of food groups by including: protein, whole grain breads, fruit and vegetables,

reduced fat milk and milk alternatives Include a drink: preferably water and/or plain milk Involve children in packing their lunchbox: involve your child in choosing what they would like to eat at

school by providing them with options from each food group Ask your children to bring home uneaten foods and talk about what they enjoyed or didn’t enjoy. Continue to

offer less popular foods from time to time and try to present them in a different way Ask if enough food was packed or too much. Often too much food is packed in school lunches and that is why

food is left uneaten Presentation is important: make school food appealing Keep food in the lunchbox cold (with a freezer brick or frozen bottle of water) to keep it appealing and prevent

the growth of bacteria

2/3 Diamonds Commemorate Remembrance Day2/3 Diamonds Commemorate Remembrance Day2/3 Diamonds Commemorate Remembrance Day On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Year 2/3 Diamonds students stood silently and thought about all of the brave men and women who have died in wars. We discussed how we would feel if we were involved in a war. Most children said terrified, scared and sad. The following are some excellent writing samples that demonstrate what the children have learned about Remembrance Day.

Dear Nanny, Today is Remembrance Day. Today we are going to remember the people who died in the war. We’re having a minute of silence. We’re going to commemorate the soldiers who died. They sacrificed themselves for the land and to keep the nation safe. When you were born were there any wars? From your beautiful granddaughter, Katelyn xoxox

Dear Pop, Today is Remembrance Day in Australia where we stand straight and bow our heads. We stand still for one minute silence. We did this because the people in World War saved Australia. They sacrificed themselves. This was the 11th hour, 11th day and the 11th month. All of Primary school came and even high school. Everyone sat down and waited. Then the flag came up. We stood still and remembered them and then we went back to class. Do you know anyone in the war? From Sofie xoxxo

Dear Remy, Today at school we had one minute silence at 11am. The day falls on the 11th of November. On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month that is when we have a minutes silence in Australia and other allied countries such as New Zealand and Canada and the United States. Do you know anyone who went to war? From Mia xoxox

Dear Pop, Today we are doing a minute of silence to remember soldiers who died in the Wars and sacrificed themselves in warfare in Australia and New Zealand and Canada and the United States. What would you do if you were in the war pop? Would you be an aircraft flyer or a sniper, tank driver or just be a normal runner with a gun and ammo? I’m going to be an aircraft flyer if I want to be in a war. From Coby xoxo

A big thank you to all of the family and friends who visited our class last week, to celebrate Grandparent’s Day. The children were very excited to show you all a little bit of the work they have been doing and they also liked creating some special gifts for you all. It is truly wonderful to see how lucky our students are – having lots of love and support from extended family!

2/3 Diamonds Reminder – MADD night is happening on the last week of term. The theme this year is Carols by Candlelight. 2/3 Diamonds will be singing and will all need to wear a red top and either a denim skirt, short or jeans (blue please).

MUSIC EVENTS Last Thursday was the WAP school’s music day AGAIN!!! at Yeoval Central School. Not only did we bring our usual troops, but this time round, we had two singers – Sophia Hayden, Olivia Hilder and two Glockenspiel players – Kai Greenwood and Emily Purseglove. The strings were with Mr Lee and band with Mr Screen, our bandmaster as usual. The rock group guitars were guided by Mr Gerry Capell from Trundle Central School and the beginner guitar group went under the wings of Ms Johnson from Yeoval Central School.

Special thanks to Jack James our reliable bus driver and Ms Murtagh for coming along.

Well done to all, and hopefully it’ll be the same again next year. If you want to read more about the music day, please refer to Matilda Brennan’s article for a comprehensive report! And see below for some wonderful photos. House keeping matters: The end of the year is approaching fast. Some of the students have had a taster of a particular instrument for the year. Now is a good time to have a talk to your child about whether they want to keep going with the current instrument or swap to something different, but related, or totally different. Please keep in mind that: “The first three years is the hardest when you learn an instrument. During this period, often progress can be either slow or non-existent.”

YEOVAL MUSIC DAY BY MATILDA BRENNAN - YR 2

*It was a picturesque drive from Dubbo past the zoo, paddock sculptures, reedy creeks and lots of farm houses and interesting buildings. *We had a warm welcome at Yeoval especially as the air con in the library wasn’t working but thankfully a cool breeze persisted!! *Soon the notes of ‘g’ and ‘c’ sounds growled and flowed, filling the air with sound. *All the children were watching, listening, enjoying and making music together. *I think the children were very caring, cooperative, capable, concentrating and charming!

Mathematics

In Maths we have been learning about area and we have been busy on how much of area a shape takes up. We have been learning that the difference between the perimeter, which is a measurement of the boundary of the edge of a shape and the area. This has been a fun process and we have had lots of hands on maths objects. Area is a really fun subject. Also in maths we have been learning about converting fractions to decimals. At first we didn’t really know what to do. After a while you got the hang of it. Now we can all do it quite fast and some can do it in their heads. Miss Miller has taught us an easier way of converting fractions to decimals.
