Jacky Ickx is a wonderful man, and one of great kindness. I consider him my alter ego and someone on whom I can always rely, in good and bad times. Beyond the fact that he is a super champion, I know just how hard he worked to achieve success, having witnessed firsthand the suffering he endured when he sometimes trained with me on his bike back in his Formula 1 days. His career’s longevity and success prove the importance he placed on physical fitness.

For the past forty years we’ve enjoyed a strong friendship based on mutual respect and trust. He’s an honest and upright individual who never seeks recognition for his outstanding achievements or the incredible humanitarian work he does in africa. Personally, I’m delighted that the beautiful book devoted to my own career inspired Jacky to have this book written.

11The start of the 1972 F1 season brought Jacky Ickx a podium finish in Buenos aires, behind Stewart and Fittipaldi. The previous year’s struggle to develop the 312 PB prototype now proved a worthwhile effort as Ickx and andretti won the Daytona 6 Hours in front of the sister car of Peterson and Schenken, duplicating the same result in the 12 Hours of Sebring. With the big 5-litre sports cars now banned from the World championship for Makes, Ferrari’s rivals were alfa Romeo, Mirage and Matra, although none could challenge the beautiful 312 PB’s dominance. Ferrari’s prominent presence in the series even led some to believe that F1 was now only a secondary objective on the manufacturer’s agenda. as the Prancing Horse crushed the opposition, Ickx added two more victories in the first half of the season, winning at Brands Hatch with andretti and at Monza with Regazzoni. The Belgian came in second with the Swiss in the Spa 1000 km event (won by team mates Redman and Merzario), but still reaped a win on home ground that weekend when he triumphed in the coupes de Spa touring car support race driving a BMW 2800 cS entered by Team Schnitzer.

In Formula 1, Ickx secured a string of good points at the start of the European season with two consecutive second place finishes: first at Jarama, behind Fittipaldi’s Lotus, and then at Monaco where the Brazilian put himself on pole for the first time in his career. The weather was bad all weekend in the tiny Principality and when the flag dropped, Jean-Pierre Beltoise made a great start to grab a lead that his BRM upheld all afternoon. The Frenchman’s superb performance in the treacherous conditions brought him his first and only grand Prix win as he crossed the finish line 38 seconds in front of Ickx’s Ferrari. “It was definitely Jean-Pierre’s day. The track was drenched, incredibly slippery, and you couldn’t see a thing. But in the end, he perfectly weathered the storm … “

The Belgian grand Prix was held at Nivelles, a new racing facility near Brussels but Ickx retired with injection problems in front of his home crowd. The French grand

Prix at clermont-Ferrand was equally disappointing but at Brands Hatch, one of the Ferrari driver’s favourite circuits, he secured pole and enjoyed a commanding lead on Sunday, only to retire with an oil pressure problem after 49 laps. The F1 community set up camp at the Nürburgring where the track’s security had been greatly improved as extensive portions of the legendary circuit were now lined with armco barriers. In qualifying, Ickx put in a 7’07” lap, putting him in pole position. Stewart’s Tyrrell was seven tenths of a second behind the flying Ferrari while Fittipaldi’s Lotus was beaten by a full three seconds. The weekend was an outstanding example of total dominance as Jacky Ickx achieved a clean sweep of pole, fastest lap and a win. He took the chequered flag with a 48-second lead over teammate Regazzoni, who completed the race after a contact with Stewart sent the Tyrrell into the barriers. The “Ring Meister’s” splendid triumph, his sixth for Ferrari, was a welcome boost to the Scuderia’s ailing fortunes. It was also Ickx’s eighth grand Prix win and, unbeknown to him at the time, his last. Much like the previous year, the 312 B2’s speed was intact, but its reliability was a handful in the latter part of the season. Retirements in austria and Italy, where the Ferrari was once again on pole, were followed by fruitless North american races as Ickx dropped out of the running in canada and finished a distant 5th at Watkins glen. In the end, he still managed to haul himself and the troubled Scuderia up to 4th place overall in the drivers’ and constructors’ title chase. Unfortunately, Ickx’s growing frustration with Ferrari’s inability to provide a fast and reliable car from the outset had started to erode his motivation. all too aware of the team’s underperformance, Enzo Ferrari decided to invest heavily in the design of the new Ferrari B3 for 1973. Ickx’s woes in F1 were somewhat counterbalanced by the 312 PB’s success in endurance racing. He rounded off the year by winning the 1000 km of Zeltweg, co-driving with Brian Redman, and the 6 Hours of Watkins glen with Mario andretti. With a total of six victories under his belt, Jacky was at the top of his game, having contributed greatly to Ferrari’s World championship crown, in spite of no official title being awarded to a driver at that time for such an achievement.
