This activity is adapted from the Nrich website. An interactive Cuisenaire version is available on the Nrich website. Show the pupils a ‘train’ made from three pink Cuisenaire rods.
This activity can be repeated with various combination of rods. Pupils can work in pairs to test out their solutions and check if they are correct. Extension: Pupils can challenge their partner to find a combination of rods to match a combination of their choice.
Trains
I made a train using three pink Cuisenaire rods. Can you and your partner make a shorter train/longer train than mine? Make a train the same length as mine using different coloured rods. How can you check
if they are the same length?

Provide teams or pairs of pupils with a list of measurements and ask them to find objects or distances that match the measurements given. The list could also include some non-standard units of measurement and personal benchmarks as well as standard units of measurement.
A length of 10cm Something that is the same length as your Maths book A length of 1 metre Something that is more than 20cm but less than 1 metre Something that is around the same length as your finger
Measurements can be amended depending on the class level or ability of the pupils e.g.
A length of 15mm A distance of 5km A length of 2 metres A distance that is the same as Cork to Dublin to the nearest kilometre.

Level B.3: Estimate, measure and record length using the standard unit (metre, half metre and centimetre)
• Estimate, measure and record weight using standard unit (the metre, half metre and centimetre)

Pupils work in pairs to measure the length of gummy worms in centimetres. Pupils record the length of the worms. Pupils should now
stretch their gummy worms without breaking them. How far can they stretch them? How much longer are the worms after being
stretched? Pupils compare their worms and can order them from longest to shortest.
Extension: Elicit suggestions from the pupils about the need for a baseline for a fair test and challenge pupils to create a fair test to
measure the gummy worms. Challenge pupils to create a length of 50cm using gummy worms.

Level C.3: Understand, estimate and measure the perimeter of 2-D Shapes
Level D.3: Estimate and measure the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes

Pupils will create 2D shapes with anglegs/geo-strips and find the perimeter of the shapes.
Note: Anglegs are measured in decimal form e.g 10.14cm so pupils will be working with approximate measurements.
Challenge pupils to create a shape with a set perimeter
Construct a shape with a perimeter of approximately 35cm
Construct a square with a perimeter of approximately 16 cm
Extension: Pupils challenge each other to construct a shape with a certain perimeter. Groups of pupils investigate and share how many
rectangles they can create with a perimeter of 24 cm/36cm/48cm etc.
