When accomplishing any task, there is usually

more than one way to get the job done,

sometimes even thousands ofdifferent ways. When trying to connect more than one computer

together there are alsomany different ways to get

the job done. Some ways are better than others in

certain situations, and it is very beneficial to getstarted in the right direction when networking

computers, not just because ofusefulness, but

    also because ofsecurity issues.

At least two computers A network interface on each computer. It is a device

that lets the computer talk or communicate with othercomputers on the network. It is usually called anNIC(Network Interface Card)or an adapter.

A connection medium- usually a wire and a cable butwireless communication between the computers isalsopossible

Networking operating system software includes Microsoft Windows 2003 Server

with ADC and DC. Most networks- even those withonly two computers have a hub or switch as aconnecting device between them.

ARCNET, Token Ring and many othertechnologies have been used in the past, but

    Ethernet overunshielded twisted paircabling,

and Wi-Fi are the twomost common technologiescurrently in use.

A local area network (LAN) supplies networking

capability to a groupofcomputers in close

proximity to each other such as in an officebuilding, a school, or a home.

Metropolitan Area Network - a network spanning a

physical area larger than a LAN but smaller than a

WAN, such as a city.A MAN (metropolitan areanetwork) is a larger network that usually spans

several buildings in the same city or town.

A MAN is typically owned an operated by a single

entity such as a government body or largecorporation.

The IUB network is an example ofa MAN

AWAN (wide area network), in comparison to a

MAN, is not restricted to a geographical location,

although it might be confined within the bounds of

a state or country.AWAN connects several LANs,and may be limited to an enterprise (a corporation

or an organization)or accessible to the public.

The technology is high speed and relatively

expensive. The largest and most well-known example ofa

    WAN is the Internet

Apersonal area network (PAN) is a computer

    network used forcommunication among

    computerdevices (including telephones and

personal digital assistants) close toone'sperson. The devices may ormay not belong to the

    person in question.

The reach ofa PAN is typically a few meters.

PANs can be used for communication among thepersonal devices themselves (intrapersonal

communication), orfor connecting to a higher level

network and the Internet (an uplink).

3 A storage area network (SAN) is an architecture to

attach remote computer storage devices (such as

disk arrays, tape libraries, and optical

jukeboxes) toservers in such a way that thedevices appear as locally attached to the

    operating system.

3 Although the cost and complexity ofSANs are

dropping, they are still uncommon outside largerenterprises.

3 A campus area network (CAN) is a computer

network that interconnects local area networks

throughout a limited geographical area, such as a

    universityc

ampus, a corporate campus, or amilitary base.

3 It could be considered a metropolitan area

network that is specific to a campus setting.A

campus area network is, therefore, larger than alocal area network but smaller than a wide area

    network.

    UTP category 3 phone lines

UTP category 5 todays networking standards

    3 2. Coaxial:

    Resembles round cable TV wiring.

    3 3. Fiber-optic:

Usually reserved for connections between backbone devices

    in larger networks.

Hubs or repeaters are simple devices that

    interconnect groups ofusers.

Hubs forward any data packets they receive overone port fromone workstation-including e-mail,

    word Processing documents spreadsheets,

graphics, orprint requests-to all of their remaining

    ports.

Routers use more complete packet address todetermine which routeror workstation shouldreceive each packet.

Ifa link between two routers goes down, thesending router can determine an alternate route tokeep traffic moving.

Routers alsoprovide links between networks thatspeak different languages-or, in other wordsnetworks that use different protocols.

ISDN(intigrated service digital network) is a

    circuit-switched telephone network system, that

alsoprovides access topacket switchednetworks, designed to allow digital transmission

    ofvoice and data overordinary telephone

copper wires, resulting in better voice quality than

an analog phone. Integrated Services Digital Network is a telephone

    system network.
