  • Introduction

The world is moving fast into the knowledge and innovation economy. Countries worldwide have begun

making preparation to embrace the changing requirements stipulated by the new economy. Top on the

agenda of requirements is the need to strengthen each country’s Science, Technology and Innovation

framework, especially in South countries. STI are key drivers of the knowledge economy. Knowledge-

driven industries now account for a major share of global economic growth. The future will witness

further expansion in the knowledge-driven business where innovation is a major determinant of

competitiveness. In recent decades, many developing countries have become global economic giants

by adopting S&T innovations in the agriculture, infrastructure and manufacturing rather than generating

paper wealth. There are valuable lessons developing countries can share with one another.

One of the principle objectives of the ISTIC is to provide capacity building in science and technology

through providing policy advice and exchange of experience and best practices. In recent years, the role

of the knowledge economy has expanded. Technopreneurship has emerged as a way of developing

new growth sectors of the innovation economy. In line with this, there has been a push to create more

    technologically competent entrepreneurs.

In order to accomplish this particular objective, ISTIC is organizing a training workshop on

Technopreneurship in collaboration with YACHAY which will be held in Ecuador, from 16 – 20 March

2015. This workshop is targeted mainly at researchers from universities and research institutes from

countries in Latin America who have developed inventions or patents to provide them with the

necessary knowledge on how to commercialize their research findings or directors of commercialization

unit of universities and R&D Institutes. The program is designed to train participants on the elements of

entrepreneurship in relation to the demand of the knowledge and innovation economy. They will also be

taught a systematic approach on how to create and build successful businesses which are based on

    and driven by technology.

    Workshop Objective

In this workshop, participants will be exposed to various topics relevant to technopreneurship in order to

technopreneurship and its role in creating impact, technology development, idea validation, opportunity

assessment, business model, business planning, financing, and issues on Intellectual Property (IP). By

having this program, it is expected that more participants are exposed to technopreneurship and

  • BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF TOPICS

    UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY,

    INNOVATION &

    COMMERCIALIZATION – THE

    MALAYSIAN EXPERIENCE /

    USAINS HOLDINGS – A CASE

    STUDY

Mr Edwin Jose Gomes – Group

    Managing Director, Usains

    Holding Sdn. Bhd.

Basic fundamental of the establishment of any university has to be defined clearly before slowly bring the audience to university “innovation and commercialisation” thus helps to facilitate the university to evolve from being a place to study to a place to create and spur innovation, creation and money. The survival of any university; is the ability of a university to adapt and absorb the changes and it react to micro and macro environment. Thus, in USM case, how it has transformed itself to become one of the leading universities in technology and commercialisation is by establishing Usains Holding (the commercial arms of Universiti Sains Malaysia). One of USAINS agendas is to transform the way academics, business, industry and the public sector collaborate. USAINS recognize and exploit opportunities for technical innovations that can lead to viable commercial products and profitable businesses.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY & COMMERCIALIZATION POLICY OF AN ORGANIZATION AND HOW TO ASCERTAIN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IP OWNERSHIP Mr. Mohd Fadzil Bin Ahmad –

    Principal Assistant Legal Adviser,

    Universiti Sains Malaysia

The Intellectual Property Policy is an important policy that sets down terms of exploitation of an intellectual property, ownership, profit and commercialisation and the minimum standards for protection of intellectual property as applied to the respective organisation. An Intellectual Property Policy normally contains requirements that an organisation must meet for patent, trademark, and copyright rights, including the rights of creator and researcher. An Intellectual Property Policy also specifies the organisation committee role, procedures, remedies and dispute resolution procedures. Protection and enforcement of all intellectual property rights shall meet the organisation's mission and vision to contribute to the promotion of technological innovation and to the transfer and dissemination of technology, to the mutual advantage of creator and researcher of technological knowledge and in a manner conducive to social and economic welfare, and to a balance of sustainable rights and obligations.

  • IP ISSUES IN RELATION TO LATIN AMERICA COUNTRIES Speaker from Ecuador / Latin America to be proposed by YACHAY

Defining appropriate Intellectual Property (IP) policy is a key industrial and social policy matter for Latin American governments and issue on how to manage the IP has been discussed among members to identify the key challenges in fine-tuning IP policies and regulations. The IP interests of countries in Latin America may differ substantially from comparable interests in the United States, Europe and Asia. Conceptually, Latin American countries may have interests in stronger IP protection and in all cases; education, research and other public access interests should be promoted. The specific tailoring of IP laws to suit the national interest is the "norm" in the United States and Europe, where the laws are constantly being readjusted but not among the Latin American governments. This topic discusses IP issues that Latin American countries are facing and the best possible ways to address it – depending on requirements of each country.

MARKETING CONSIDERATIONS IN COMMERCIALISATION Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azizah Omar – School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

There is a strong relation between commercialisation and marketing. Emphasis on product/services development alone cannot ensure whether the product/services can be successful. Element of marketing has to injected especially to ensure public at mass notice the existence of the product/services and to allow creation of “needs.” The success of any product/services depends on how good is one at executing the marketing strategy, understand customer needs and behaviour and most importantly, to create the “needs” among customer/consumers. Key elements in this topic are: The universal functions of marketing; the importance of marketing strategy planning; what anyone should know in elements of marketing; and most important – what and how to implement marketing strategy.

  • RESEARCH AND COMMERCIALISATION – STRATEGY, INNOVATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP Dr. Cheang Peck Yeng Sharon – School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

Success of research and commercialisation by university depends largely to the university own initiatives. Strategy is a critical component of a business. Increasingly, a premium is placed on strategists who are able to exploit creativity and innovation to attain competitive advantage. By referring to this, the focus on creativity and innovation in strategy formulation and on the importance of formulation being complemented by a strong capability in strategy execution. University and researchers must investigate factors in both entrepreneurial and corporate settings. This leads to opportunity identification and business start-ups, managing growth, business restructuring, business negotiations, intellectual property management, managing change, management consulting and the nature of innovative organisations. Research and commercialisation has play an important role in a university development and identifies the relationship between university, government, funding agencies (public and private sector) and companies/industries which could lead to a result-driven research and commercialisation. A successful and result-driven research and commercialisation especially among universities in United States largely depends on private funding instead of government funding. Many researchers who were funded by government grants (for example, in Malaysia) will normally produce less desirable result in comparison to those who funded by private companies fund because private companies normally look for result.

WRITING WINNING BUSINESS PROPOSAL Mr. Lok Char Lee – School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

This course addresses some of the key issues involved in writing business proposal and business plan. The main objective is to discuss about the steps in planning and researching a business proposal or plan to raise capital. The topics include information gathering before writing a business proposal; possible structure of a business plan; what to do and not to do; the layout tips in writing proposal; editing the proposal and the follow-up required once it is written and submitted. In addition, the course covers the key elements of high-quality proposals and the quality criteria in evaluating proposals. Upon completion of this module, the participants will be able to write a business proposal to apply for new project funding and understand the key elements in writing a winning business proposal.

  • ISSUES IN ENCOURAGING COMMERCIALISATION OF RESEARCH – LATIN AMERICA EXPERIENCE Speaker from Ecuador / Latin America to be proposed by YACHAY

Undoubtedly the capability to innovate and to bring innovation successfully to market will be a crucial determinant of the global competitiveness of nations over the coming decade. There is growing awareness among policymakers that innovative activity is the main driver of economic progress and well-being as well as a potential factor in meeting global challenges in domains such as the environment and health. This session discusses the factors militating against the translation of scientific R&D outputs into innovations and commercialisation. Specific factors such as institutional framework, adequate funding and knowledge pool in the process of building indigenous innovation capability for national development will be discussed. Policies, strategies and structures that could facilitate the effective management of R&D and commercialisation, and enhance university-industry connections will be the main discussion.

OPPORTUNITY IDENTIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT Mr Edwin Jose Gomes – Group Managing Director, Usains Holding Sdn. Bhd.

The underlying of this topic is how to create opportunity by tapping into researchers’ knowledge and how to assess whether a researcher has what it takes to become the champion in his/her field of research. Not all researchers share the same positivism when it comes to commercialisation and to “sell” knowledge for value/income creation. In order for a university to identify and create opportunity, they must be able to differentiate between the opportunistic and the non-opportunistic researchers. It is important to expose these researchers to integrated approaches in knowledge generation via integrated conferences and integrated faculties or interest groups to spur commercialisation within them. It is also important that this researchers to be guided by a good leader; a leader that believe in the potential of his followers; patience, proactive and motivating.

  • BRANDING & MARKETING IN PRACTICE Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azizah Omar – School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

The American Marketing Association (AMA) defines a brand as a "name, term, sign, symbol or design, or a combination of them intended to identify the goods and services of one seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of other sellers. Therefore, it makes sense to understand that branding is not about getting your target market to choose you over the competition, but it is about getting your prospects to see you as the only one that provides a solution to their problem. She added, to succeed in branding, a company must understand the needs and wants of their customers and prospects. This can be done by integrating the brand strategies through the company at every point of public contact. A company’s brand resides within the hearts and minds of customers, clients, and prospects. It is the sum total of their experiences and perceptions, some of which you can influence, and some that you cannot. A strong brand is invaluable as the battle for customers intensifies day by day. It is important to spend time investing in researching, defining, and building your brand. After all, a brand is the source of a promise to consumer. It is a foundational piece in marketing communication. Whereas marketing is an activity. Marketing activities and strategies result in making products available that satisfy customers while making profits for the companies that offer those products. It is a management process through which goods and services move from concept to the customer. It includes the coordination of four elements called the 4P's of marketing: Identification, selection and development of a product; Determination of its price; Selection of a distribution channel to reach the customer's

place, and; Development and implementation of a promotional

    strategy.

Entrepreneurs seem more quickly frustrated these days when their “million-dollar idea” doesn’t turn into a sustainable business overnight. They don’t realize that it takes many skills to build a business under the best of circumstances, and today’s world of instant gratification doesn’t leave room for the patience and practice to develop these skills. To start your own business and become a successful entrepreneur, you need special disciplines; disciplines that are practiced by all successful entrepreneurs and self-made business millionaires. You can either learn or practice these disciplines early in your entrepreneurial career or you can learn and practice them later. This session will highlight traits of successful entrepreneurs.

GROUP DISCUSSION ON BUSINESS PRESENTATION PROPOSAL Mr. Lok Char Lee – School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
