Wow – 45 years is something to be proud of. From the seed of an idea that was tossed out during a family outing to the spectacular camping network

that it is today, Thousand Trails has had quite a journey since its initial inception in 1969.

For those of you unfamiliar with the origins, back in 1969, founder Milt Kuolt and his wife Lois, purchased a large parcel of land in Washington that they would eventually turn into the flagship campground of the network: Chehalis. While the idea took root in 1969, it would be three years before Chehalis would welcome its first members. The initial sales brochure was directed at “fun-seeking, outdoors-loving families.”

Well, they certainly were on to something. From that single campground to the more than 80 in the network today, we are glad to be celebrating such a long history of making camping memories.

The Kuolts had a vision when they started this whole thing. While developing Chehalis, they wanted it to represent several things. In addition to providing “a well-placed, easily accessible campground” that was equipped with all the comforts of home, plus plenty of amenities and outdoor

activity opportunities, they also wanted to create a sense of community – somewhere people felt they belonged.

And while Thousand Trails has certainly proven a success, the Kuolts’ goal to create a sense of belonging was achieved, as well. For years, the camping experience offered by Thousand Trails has provided families with memories, engendered lifelong friendships and sparked a love of camping in some who may have never considered themselves a camper.

We are a unique niche in the world of outdoor lifestyle. We offer variety from locations to camping styles, from membership options to amenities; we offer a place to reconnect and disconnect. We offer an affordable opportunity to Get Out and Camp. In short, we offer the best camping experience out there.

Drive Safely: Wintertime can offer its own set of unique driving challenges. But winter, spring, summer or fall, the best rule to live by is the Cardinal Rule of RVing: Always Remember You’re Out Here to Have FUN! If traffic is heavy and road conditions are unsafe, consider delaying your trip for a day or two and stay comfortably cozied up in your current campsite. If your schedule demands that you travel, plan your route so you can stick to main roads like interstate highways, which are better maintained in stormy weather and are well-patrolled by emergency services, police, and highway departments.

Stay in the right-hand lane as much as possible and slow down slightly. Increase your following distances. Don’t try to keep up with the major flow of traffic in wet, rainy, snowy, or windy conditions, or anytime you feel ill at ease. The physical and mental stress created by straining to keep up with the flow of traffic when you feel uncomfortable is not only unsafe for you, but for other motorists as well. Be courteous, be friendly, be calm, and drive safely.

Don’t pass big trucks unless you have an absolutely clear line of sight, you’re sure the driver can clearly see you, and you have adequate time to complete your pass. Most large trucks are traveling faster than we RVers like to go, anyway. Relax, take your time, and enjoy your journey, regardless of the weather.

Take frequent rest stops to stretch your legs, relax a bit, walk a bit, and to take the opportunity to check your vehicle out while you’re stopped. Bundle up, wear a hat and gloves, and think about what you’ve got on your feet before you step out into a snow bank. Sure, you love your driver’s moccasins. But is that REALLY what you need to be wearing outside in the snow or rain? Nope. Get some easy on/easy off rubber boots and keep them by the RV door (or behind your seat) for all your outside duties like rig checks and fuel fill-ups in messy weather. While you’re outside, make a quick visual check of tires, lights, headlights and brake lights, and keep your windshield, back window, and mirrors clean.

Keeping Your Rig Looking Like New, Year After Year:There’s nothing quite like a brand new RV: sparkling clean, with gleaming cabinets and that fresh-off-the-lot, brand new smell. And keeping your rig in almost pristine condition is a breeze. Here are a few simple, everyday tips you can use to help keep your RV in tip-top shape.

When cooking, always use the exhaust fan and open a window near the kitchen to help increase air flow so that cooking odors can easily flow outdoors. This will help keep grease and smoke odors at bay. And think about the strong smell of a campfire. Great as they are while you’re toasting marshmallows, that smell isn’t quite so welcome when it clings to your curtains, your clothes, and the walls of your rig. So think first, and keep your RV’s windows and doors closed whenever you’re enjoying the outdoor pleasures of a roaring campfire.

When traveling, remember that unpaved roads always create a fine cloud of dust. Keep your windows closed while traveling, and make it a part of your setting-up-camp ritual to do a quick dusting and vacuuming of the rig. It only takes a few minutes, and will help keep everything ship-shape.

Don’t forget the ceiling! If you have a smooth ceiling, wipe it periodically with a soft cloth. If yours is fabric-covered, use your vacuum’s brush attachment or use a little dust buster-type hand-held vacuum. Pay special attention to corners throughout the RV and don’t forget to periodically vacuum your closet area. Stored shoes sometimes leave a little dirt behind. Check your windowsills, too. Sometimes, dirt and dust can get trapped in the little channels of rounded-corner windows; a vacuum works best for this job. Occasionally, you may need to use the brush attachment of a vacuum to clean your window screens and the screen door.

About once a year, take an hour of your time to wipe all inside walls with a soft cloth to remove dust and dirt. And it’s a good idea to occasionally pop the plastic covers off light fixtures and give them a quick wash and dry before re-installing. At

Leavenworth Preserve welcomes members.

Singer and cowboy actor Roy Rogers becomes TT’s first official spokesperson. Oakzanita Preserve opens.

1982

TT takes on Texas opening Colorado River, Lake Conroe, Medina Lake and Lake Whitney. Nevada comes next as TT opens the Las Vegas Preserve. TrailBlazer switches format from tabloid to magazine.

1984

TT continues to grow adding Michigan’s St. Clair Preserve, Indiana’s Horseshoe Lake, Ohio’s Kenisee and Wilmington preserves, as well as Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay, North Carolina’s Forest Lake and Florida’s Orlando preserves.

Throughout January and FebruaryGoleta Butterfly GroveMonarchs are usually found in Goleta, California, just 25 miles from the preserve from mid-November through mid-February and docents are available on weekends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. during these months. The Goleta Butterfly Grove (Ellwood Main) is in the Sperling Preserve on the Ellwood Mesa in Goleta. Free parking is available. Bring your telephoto lens!

Timothy Lake North & SouthFebruary 14-16: Valentine’s Day Weekend: We have a delicious pasta buffet with bread, salad and dessert planned for Saturday night’s dinner The Not-So-Newlywed Game returns after a barrel full of laughs at last year’s game. See which couple, whether newly married or high school sweethearts, know each other better…you might be surprised! Other activities such as the newly introduced Couples Silly Relays and Movie on the Big Screen will top off the weekend. Throughout January and FebruaryShawnee Mountain Ski Area/Fernwood Resort Shawnee Mountain Ski Area, located just 10 minutes from the preserve, is open for day and night skiing. Snow Tubing at Fernwood is now open daily and is just five minutes from Timothy Lake South. Fernwood has some of the best snow tubing in the Poconos. Timothy Lake has discount tickets for both Shawnee and Fernwood which is exclusive to our visiting members. Stop in the Welcome Center and pick up your discount lift and tubing tickets.

December 31/January 1Annual Ring of Fire and Hope/31st Annual Birch Bay Waterslides Polar Bear Plunge/2nd Annual Broom Hockey TournamentEvents are held waterfront by the Birch Bay Chamber Visitor Information Center, 7900 Birch Bay Drive, just 1 mile from the preserve. Be part of an annual tradition and enjoy these events. Ring of Fire event begins at 7 p.m. on December 31. Polar Bear Plunge is at noon on New Year’s Day, followed by the Hockey Tournament at 1 p.m. For information call 360.371.5004. ■

The project at Soledad Canyon is well underway with many items nearing completion. When the entire project is complete, watch for details for a Grand Opening event.

A quick recap of the improvements:

The Welcome Center Exterior upgrades include landscaping, parking lot lighting and paving and masonry updates. The fully-renovated interior will feature new furniture, a new 65-inch LED television, a new check-in area and an awesome stone wall design.

The Family Lodge will have new lighting and fixtures, new BBQ grills, and new benches and picnic tables, plus renovations to the dance hall and restrooms.

The Adult Lodge will have new furniture fixtures, pool, tables and LED televisions.

The Sport Courts will be resurfaced.

The Pool Area will be expanded to include a new playground and splash pad for children, new picnic tables, new benches, and grills as well as lighting and seating.

Plus, restrooms throughout the preserve were remodeled and more than 65 sites were upgraded from 30 to 50-amp service. And, new entry signage will greet you as you enter the preserve.

We appreciate your patience while this project was underway and as we near completion.

HOW DOES YOURGARDEN GROW?

Our Orlando preserve is now home to a community garden that will eventually bear the fruit of the labors of many. A kick-off party was held in December and members had the opportunity to sign up to volunteer their time to help keep our garden green. The initial plantings were donated by ELS and now it's up to the green thumbs at Orlando to nurture, weed and harvest this ground-breaking project to success.

Centrally located, the garden has its own picnic area and according to Manager Beth-Ann McCourt, the green space creates "an oasis of calm and serenity within the hustle and bustle of the preserve."

And while a Garden Committee was formed, the plan is that the harvest will then be used for a community-wide farmers' market as well as the possibility for some "farm to table" events.

Instagram: Instagram is one of the newest networks to hit your smart phones. The photo based network helps you find photos of things you love, share them with friends and even add a few effects to trick your followers into thinking you’re professional photographers. Since we have so many great photos from our campgrounds and RV resorts, Thousand Trails has not one, but two accounts on Instagram. Our @GetOutandCamp account shares photos of camping adventures from around the world. Simply add the hashtag #getoutandcamp and your photography could be featured! The road trip continues! If you followed TrailBlazer last summer, you know we took you on a few road trips in search of farmers’ markets, state capitals, and a big slice of Americana. The Iconic DrivesIf you’re searching for the ultimate road trip in the Lower 48, almost any list you find will include the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway, Pacific Coast Highway, and Florida’s Overseas Highway. These trips consistently hover near the top of any great road trip list ever assembled.

The Blue Ridge ParkwayA two lane highway with plenty of history and great scenery, a trip on the 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway is one you won’t want to miss.

As part of the National Park System, it began as an extension of the also-iconic Skyline Drive as a way to connect Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Work began in 1935 and by 1966 it was complete, with the exception of 7.7 miles around Grandfather Mountain. The Parkway celebrated 75 years in 2010 and continuously records the highest number of visits in the national park system each year.

There’s opportunity for hiking, shopping, and sightseeing. Don’t miss Peaks of Otter for hiking. Places to stop and visit include big cities like Roanoke and Asheville and small town charmers like Fancy Gap and Blowing Rock.

Encore’s Scenic Resort in Ashville is just one mile from the Parkway, making it a very convenient place to stay during your BRP drive. TT’s Lynchburg is just about an hour off the parkway, making it a great place to spend a day or so as you explore the sights including the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park or the National D-Day Memorial. Also, just outside Lynchburg is Poplar Forest, the vacation home of Thomas Jefferson.

Florida’s Overseas HighwayAs the southernmost portion of U.S. Highway 1, the Overseas Highway is an engineering wonder that connects the Florida Keys with mainland Florida. Often called “The Highway that Goes to the Sea,” the Overseas Highway has been designated as an All-American Road, the highest recognition possible under the National Scenic Byways program.

Starting north in Key Largo, the road takes you all the way south to Key West, with plenty to see in between.

Key Largo is home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first underwater preserve in the United States. Here you will see 55 varieties of corals and nearly 500 different species of fish. Movie lovers will not want to miss a ride on the African Queen, the vessel made famous in the 1951 movies starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. The famous steamboat is available for canal and dinner cruises.

Mid-way on the highway, you’ll find Marathon Key, home to Crane Point Hammock, an archaeological site that contains evidence of pre-Columbian and prehistoric Bahamian artifacts

Further south, you’ll head into the Lower Keys. Visit Big Pine Key and glimpse the endangered Key deer, which makes its home only in the Keys. Big Pine Key is also home to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary.

The road ends in Key West – home to Key West Conch, otherwise known as the people who call Key West home. Key West is also noted for its association with Ernest Hemingway, whose home is now registered as a national historic landmark. Here the famed writer worked on For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Green Hills of Africa, A Farewell to Arms and Death in the Afternoon. Key West is also home to

Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, once home to artist and naturalist John J. Audubon.

Beyond Key West lay the Dry Tortugas where you can find Fort Jefferson National Monument, a 19th century fort, reached only by boat or seaplane and also great for bird watching, snorkeling and diving.

If you’re traveling the Overseas Highway, make plans to stay at Encore’s two resorts located in the Keys, Fiesta Key RV Resort, located on Long Key in the Middle Keys and Sunshine Key RV Resort and Marina, located on Big Pine Key in the Lower Keys.

Pacific CoastIt has several names - US Route 101, Highway 101, the Oregon Coast Highway, The Pacific Coast Highway, or simply “The 101.” The Pacific Coast Route runs 1,500 miles from Olympic National Park in Washington State down south to California. The trek takes you through forests and missions, as well as rainforests and near deserts. There are big cities, little towns, historic sites and iconic landmarks. You’ll see towering mountains, Spanish beaches and more breathtaking views of the Pacific than you can imagine. Take in a sunrise, a sunset, visit the beaches and explore the towns as you meander down this big highway.

There’s plenty of Thousand Trails and Encore representation on the Pacific coastline starting in the Pacific Northwest with Oceana and Long Beach in Washington. Oregon coast preserves include Seaside, Whalers Rest, Pacific City and South Jetty. Once you cross the border into California, you’ll find Russian

River, surrounded by the beautiful wine country. Encore’s San Francisco RV is next and there’s Soledad Canyon, just outside Los Angeles.

The Roads Less Traveled

By no means does this title suggest that these scenic routes aren’t popular or well-traveled. We like to think they are hidden gemstones in America’s great road trips.

Tioga PassCalifornia State Route 120 runs directly through Tioga Pass, a scenic mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada mountains and the eastern entry point for Yosemite National Park. It may not be for the faint-hearted, as there are many tight bends and drop-offs, but it is well worth it for the scenery.

Olmsted Point, named for landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., is a viewing area off Tioga Pass that offers views into Tenaya Canyon as well as a view of the northern side of Half Dome.

Of course, with TT’s Yosemite Lakes located just five miles from the western entrance to Yosemite, you can enjoy Tioga Pass and more of this great national park.

Hill Country HighwayHighway 16 through Texas is also called the Hill Country Highway since it runs through this scenic area in the heart of Texas known for its rugged hills, lakes and beautiful Texas wildflowers (when in season!).

Pacific Coast Highway


If you’re staying at Thousand Trails Medina Lake, in Lakehills, you in the perfect spot to enjoy the stretch of Highway 16 that will take you through the “Swiss Alps of Texas.” An 85-mile loop takes you across the Medina and Sabinal Rivers. Stops along the way could include the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum that houses a collection of cycles dating from the 1910s to the present. For a natural setting, visit Lost Maples State Natural Area, a 2208-acre natural wonderland featuring limestone cliffs, canyons, woodlands and streams.

Old King’s Highway (Route 6A)This Massachusetts route winds its way through Cape Cod and some of the most charming, and historic, towns on the East Coast, including Sandwich, Yarmouth and Dennis. Tree-lined with glimpses of coastal inlets, this road inspired writer Jonathan Kendall to write in a 2005 article in Smithsonian magazine that this route “may be the most appealing stretch of America I know.”

TT’s Gateway to Cape Cod and Encore’s Old Chatham Road RV Resort provide the perfect spots to retire while exploring this route.

Kancamagus HighwayThis 34.5 stretch of highway in northern New Hampshire is very popular come fall with leaf peepers from all across the country. This Scenic Byway, also known simply as “The Kanc,” takes you along a path cut through the White Mountains and features hiking trails, waterfalls and the Kancamagus Crags, know for great climbing opportunities. Don’t miss Sabbaday Falls, Champney Falls or Rocky Gorge. Wildlife that can be spotted along the drive include bears, deer and moose – with the best time to see a

moose noted as either early morning hours or near sunset.

Encore’s Sandy Beach RV Resort in Contoocook is located about an hour south of the route’s starting point in Lincoln, NH while Encore’s Tuxbury Pond is a little under two hours south.

So there you have it – a variety of destinations that should keep you on the road all year long!

Archaeological evidence indicates that people have been attracted to Florida’s springs for many thousands of years. The springs provided a perfect home for native Floridians who found them an ideal source for food and water.

Later explorers were drawn to the intriguing subterranean discharges of freshwater, most famously, the Spanish conquistador Ponce de Leon – the first European to set foot in Florida -- who scoured the region in a legendary search for the Fountain of Youth. Some of Florida’s springs came to be valued for their therapeutic qualities and people flocked to them in droves, especially during the late 1800s and early 1900s, to drink from, and soak in, the medicinal waters.

As colonists and settlers began to inhabit Florida, springs became an even more important focus of human activity, serving as locations for Spanish missions, steamboat landings, gristmills and as reservoirs for irrigating crops.

Florida springs continue to attract people with their unique beauty and immeasurable natural and recreational benefits. Swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, scuba diving, hiking and wildlife viewing are typical of the recreational pursuits available at most springs.

Wildlife depends on the springs as well, which are said to

harbor the greatest diversity of aquatic flora and fauna in North America. Endangered West Indian manatees rely on Florida springs as life-sustaining warm water refuges in the wintertime.

While today’s mass of theme park oriented visitors might never imagine it, Florida’s springs were once the state’s primary visitor attractions. “Well before the advent of Disney World, Universal Studios or Sea World – from the 1930s well into the 70s – springs such as Silver, Rainbow, Homosassa and Weeki Wachee – were the main magnets of Florida tourism,” notes Martha Robinson, Communications Manager for Florida State Parks.

During their heyday, the springs Robinson mentions were operated as privately owned attractions, boasting lots of entertainment, fancy gardens and wildlife exhibits. All have since been purchased by the state, joining a network of 161 Florida State Parks, twice honored as the nation’s best state park system by the National Recreation and Parks Association.

Here’s one more important note about Florida’s springs that helps explain their frequency. Florida is underlain by a porous crust of limestone, which, in the lingo of geologists, is defined as karst topography. Rainwater, made slightly acidic by carbon dioxide it picks up from the atmosphere,

enters the rock and slowly dissolves in channels and caves as it works its way through the limestone. In the process, it forms an underground drainage system that through the ages has formed the great Floridan Aquifer – the source of most of Florida’s fresh water supply -- and the water that feeds the springs.

Most Florida springs occur where the limestone of the Floridan Aquifer is exposed at the land surface. Rising from very near the porous surface, the springs exhibit a relatively warm and constant temperature, usually 72-74 degrees.

So let’s spring into action and take a look at six springs that represent the best of Florida’s amazing array of natural attractions.

De Leon Springs State Park is a little gem of a park, located well off the beaten path, six miles north of DeLand, where you can kick off a visit by cooking up your own pancake breakfast.

Local folklore has it that Ponce de Leon discovered the Fountain of Youth here and that the Spanish built a sugar mill on the site in 1570. Truth is, there’s no evidence to support either legend.

The reality is that Native Floridians resided around the park’s spring for thousands of years. A 6,000-year-old dugout canoe, one of the oldest ever found in America, was recovered here. Seminole Indians settled around the spring in the 18th century but were driven out by local planters -- and it was they who built the first sugar mill in 1830. It burned to the ground during ongoing skirmishes with the Seminoles and was rebuilt. Then the mill was torched by Union troops during the Civil War, and once again rebuilt.

By the 1880s the spring had become a winter resort, luring Northern tourists with the promise of “a fountain of youth impregnated with a deliciously healthy combination of soda and sulphur.” In the 1950s the resort was further developed

as an attraction, adding gardens, a jungle cruise and water circus. Its fortunes faded with the advent of Disney World and the state of Florida acquired the property in 1982, redeveloping it as a state park.

Today the mill is home to Old Spanish Sugar Mill Restaurant where folks line up daily from 9 a.m. (8 a. m. on weekends) to grill pancakes, made from hearty stone-ground flour, right at their tables. Tip: If you want pancakes, get here early, especially on weekends, when the park usually fills to capacity by 10-10:30 a.m.

Once satiated, visitors can undertake a variety of calorie-reducing activities. Many go for a swim in the tranquil second magnitude spring, which discharges 14-19 million gallons of water a day – at a constant year-round 72 degrees. Magnitude, incidentally, is a term relating to a spring’s rate of discharge, measured in millions of gallons per day (mgd). First magnitude springs (pumping out more than 65 mgd) are the largest.

Hikers can stride out on a number of developed trails and canoes, kayaks and paddleboards can be rented at the park concession (or you can bring your own). There’s easy access along the spring run, known as Spring Garden Creek, leading to 21,574 acres of lakes and marshes that form Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge and adjacent Lake George Wildlife Management Area. Both preserves offer prime wildlife viewing, including a variety of birds and plenty of alligators.

Best way to take in the wildlife and other natural aspects of the park is with one of Captain Frank Wiltsie’s Fountain of Youth Eco/History tours aboard the 28-passenger pontoon boat MV/Acuera. During the 15 years he’s conducted these 50-minute tours, Wiltsie has gained a wealth of knowledge about the area’s complex eco-systems. He can spot a basking ‘gator at 100 yards that you’d swear was a tree stump.

Blue Spring State Park features a huge first magnitude spring that discharges 104 million gallons of water daily into the nearby St. Johns River, just west of Orange City and about 32 miles north of Orlando.

A year-round favorite among visitors and locals alike, Blue Spring reaches its popularity peak during the winter months (November to March) when up to several hundred manatees crowd the spring run seeking the warmth of its constant 73-degree water. A delight to watch, the loveable “sea cows” are easily viewed from

a quarter-mile long boardwalk bordering the spring. Blue Spring is a certified refuge for the endangered creatures so swimming, snorkeling or diving is not permitted during the winter. Though rare, a few manatees can be spotted in the spring at other times of the year.

On the flip side, the spring offers refreshing relief from the Florida heat when it opens during the remainder of the year to swimmers, snorkelers, scuba divers, boaters, hikers and fishermen. Rental canoes and kayaks are available, as is a 2 1/2 –hour guided kayak experience offered by Blue Spring Paddling Adventures. The company also offers guided 2-hour Segway tours of the park’s backcountry.

Blue Spring has seen its share of Florida history, having originally been settled thousands of years ago by native peoples. Evidence of this can be seen in the numerous middens – mounds formed by discarded snail and mollusk shells – around the spring.

Mineral prospector turned orange grower Louis Thursby purchased Blue Spring in 1856 and built a large two-story house atop an Indian midden next to the spring. Silver Springs State Park is the brand new name for what was long known as Silver Springs Nature Theme Park. What’s happened is that Silver Springs -- following on its colorful and illustrious history as a privately operated amusement park -- has merged with adjacent Silver River State Park to become a single entity under the banner Silver Springs State Park.

The merger is in keeping with the State’s long standing commitment to acquire springs that have been privately operated as amusement parks and to return them to a more natural condition, emphasizing nature over rides and other attractions.

Since its origins in 1878 as Florida’s very first tourist attraction, Silver Springs, situated on the eastern fringes of Ocala, has entertained generations of visitors with a parade of crowd captivating attractions and spectacles ranging from a reptile show and a giraffe exhibit to jungle cruises, gondola rides, jeep safaris – and its world-famous glass bottom boat rides. Not to mention that this enormous spring, largest of Florida’s inland springs, served as the set for countless movies, including six Tarzan films. It also hosted numerous episodes of the TV series, Sea Hunt, starring Lloyd Bridges.

What you’ll find today at Silver Springs is a park in transition, as Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection moves to deconstruct most of the rides and man-made attractions. They’re working as well to improve water quality, which has suffered from agricultural and residential runoff.

The iconic glass bottom boats remain – and they still nicely serve their mission as the easiest means of exploring the park’s natural environs. Staying put too is the massive Twin Oaks Mansion, home to a popular concert series. A visitor center comprised of a museum, shops and a restaurant also remains in place.

One of the best things about the merger is that it brings into play the former Silver River park’s many recreational activities – canoeing, kayaking, hiking, bicycling, camping and wildlife viewing – for a single admission price. Boating is

particularly good along the pristine 4.5-mile-long Silver River.The future of Silver Springs State Park looks promising as it caters to an increasingly eco-conscious visitor base seeking less theme and more nature.

Rainbow Springs State Park, located three miles north of Dunnellon, is Florida’s fourth largest spring and one of only three designated as a National Natural Landmark.

Such recognition seems justified when viewing the headspring from a lofty overlook just beyond the park entrance. It is an exquisite scene -- the glassy gin-clear water flanked by forest and fringed by marsh grass – as if lifted from the canvas of a landscape painter.

Rainbow’s beauty attracted early developers who dredged the spring run for glass bottom boat tours, built waterfalls, planted ornamental gardens, and tacked on a zoo, rodeo and a monorail with leaf-shaped gondolas. Here too, newer theme parks lured away the tourists and the park closed. It reopened in the mid-1990s as a state park. The gardens and waterfalls are maintained as a reminder of the park’s cultural heritage. Nature trails meander through the gardens and hilly forests surrounding the spring.

Picnicking is popular here and in addition to tables scattered about there are a number of covered pavilions nicely equipped for grilling. Some are available on a first-come basis; others must be reserved/rented so check ahead if you’re planning a group gig.

Most visitors come to Rainbow Springs to enjoy the refreshing headspring and beyond, with a choice of activities including swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking, tubing and fishing. The lazy pastime of tubing is especially enjoyable here. There’s an entrance on the backside of the park for tubers (open April to September) that allows for a two-hour drift along the Rainbow River. A tram service returns tubers to the starting point. Rental tubes, kayaks and

to get air out?

Jack, only open the cold side of a faucet that is nearest to the

water pump. Do not open the hot side or the drain valves. Turn

the pump on and wait for the pump to prime. If the pump

doesn’t prime after five minutes, there may be something

wrong with the pump or there is an air leak on the intake

hose or the filter on the intake side of the pump. For testing

purposes, you can use a short length of hose attached to the

intake side of the pump and dip the hose in a pan of water. If

the pump does not prime, you will need to replace the pump.

If this is the case, now would be a good time to upgrade to the

revolution by Shurflo as it is a much better quality pump and

much more quiet.

... charge an RV from a solar panel. I have a solar panel with a

charge controller with battery clamps. My RV has two 6-volt

batteries that are connected positive to negative and again to

make it a 12-volt system. Do I put the positive clamp on the

first positive and the negative clamp on the last negative? I

also have an inverter. Do I plug the RV into my shore line to

run my RV?

My wife and I have a complete solar system on our fifth wheel

and it really comes in handy as we enjoy being off the grid

more often than not. six-volt batteries are wired in series and

in order to produce 12-volts for your RV system. The basic rule

of thumb is the jumper wire from one 6-volt battery negative

to the other 6-volt battery positive should never have another

wire attached to it. The result is a positive and a negative from

each battery to supply the RV’s 12-volt system. You will need

to clamp your solar panels to these two terminals. I’m not sure

what type of inverter you have (whether it is hardwired or a

standalone) but in order to supply the AC power to the inside

of your RV, you will need to plug into shore power. Typically,

the inverter is designed to supply AC power when you are

boon-docking and have no shore power. If you have any other

questions, feel free to write me again.

and 6.8 liter engine. On a trip to New Jersey and back (6,034 miles)

the fuel mileage was only 8.9 mpg. Is there anything we can do to

A:Thanks for your inquiry. I do have some suggestions for you but rest

assured that 8.9 mpg is pretty decent. Keeping your tires in good

condition and at maximum air pressure at all times will optimize

your rolling resistance. Be sure that your air filter is clean and

changed at regular intervals. Aftermarket air filters offer slightly

better mileage but they are expensive and require you to service

them, so it may not be worth the additional cost. If you have not had

the spark plugs checked before, now would be a good time to have

them serviced. When spark plugs age, the electrode gap begins to

widen and mileage can be adversely affected. You didn’t indicate

how many total miles are on the RV, but I would also suggest fuel

injection service be completed if you do have high miles. Consult

the Owner’s Manual for more specific details on what your RV

chassis maintenance requires. Basically you need your RV engine

to function at its peak which means that the air and the fuel work

in proper sequence and at the proper ratio. You could locate an RV

shop that has a dynamometer and have the efficiency of your engine

analyzed on the computer. Banks Engineering produces top quality

after market performance products that can improve mileage but

again, the cost may not offset your overall mpg enough to justify the

purchase price. I truly hope that these ideas help to better inform

you as well as keep you up-and-running for many years to come.

need to put the transfer case in neutral but I’m unclear if I

A:Jerry, you will need to put the transmission shift lever in

neutral when you are towing on all fours. As long as the

transfer case has a neutral and the trans has an internal

oil pump for lubrication while towing you shouldn’t have

a problem. Don’t forget that with the transmission and

transfer case both set in the neutral, the truck can roll! So

be sure to use the emergency brake or use a set of wheel

chocks for safety…just be sure to release the emergency

brake or remove the wheel chocks once you are hooked up!

Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is appropriately located in the west-central Florida community of Homosassa Springs, just a few miles from the Gulf. It is named after the late environmentalist-philanthropist and park benefactor Ellie Schiller.

Although its centerpiece is a voluminous first-magnitude spring producing millions of gallons of water a day, Homosassa is devoted entirely to birds and animals. Most are Florida natives, which you can observe at close range in relatively natural settings.

Entering the park through its educative interpretation center, visitors board a pontoon boat for a narrated jungle cruise along Pepper Creek leading to the zoological heart of the park. A network of paved trails and boardwalks circulates among exhibits featuring black bear, Florida panther, cougar, red wolves, bobcats, gray fox, key deer, otters, a variety of reptiles and alligators. Among feathered residents are flamingos, roseate spoonbills, whooping cranes, pelicans, herons, egrets and birds of prey such as ospreys, hawks and eagles.

Most attention here, however, focuses on the park’s resident manatees, which can be observed year-round from a floating observatory. Park literature claims this is the only place you’re guaranteed to see manatees at close range 365 days a year.

Manatee and other wildlife programs are offered throughout the day and there’s a children’s education center providing hands-on exposure to, and information about, Florida’s environment.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, situated just minutes north of Spring Hill, can be defined in one word, AMAZING! No review of Florida’s fabulous springs would be complete without telling the story of Weeki Wachee. World famous for its mermaid show that has been delighting visitors since 1947, it’s the one attraction-based spring that has withstood the challenge of Disney World and subsequent Sunshine State mega-theme parks to survive as a viable contender in today’s highly competitive tourism market.

Park facilities nestle around another of Florida’s mighty first-magnitude springs, with an average discharge of 112

million gallons a day. More notable than its magnitude is its 400-plus foot depth, making it the nation’s deepest naturally formed spring.

For all the grandeur of its spring, it is the mermaids who continue to steal the show at Weeki Wachee. The current cast includes 12 female mermaids and three mermen, or princes as they’re officially titled.

They perform before the large glass windows of a 400-seat theater embedded in limestone 16 feet beneath the surface of the spring. The troupe executes a rigorous schedule – three performances a day during the week and five shows daily on weekends – that points to the fact they are not only talented entertainers, but also well-conditioned athletes. They must be to carry out their carefully choreographed 30-minute shows in the face of a strong 5 mph current.

Animal shows are also part of the entertainment mix here, featuring handlers who display and discuss a variety of domesticated birds and reptiles.

There is also plenty of excitement in store for youngsters and the young at heart on the high-speed body slides and flume rides at Buccaneer Bay, Florida’s only spring-fed water park. The Bay, open March through October, also features a tube ride, an area for swimming and snorkeling, and some glistening white sand beaches, including one with a volleyball court.

Visitors are invited to join a riverboat ride along a 7-mile run of the Weeki Wachee River and paddlers can ply the same placid stretch of river utilizing canoes and kayaks rented from park concessionaire, Paddling Adventures.

In September 1983, Roy Rogers paid a visit to California’s Idyllwild Preserve and entertained guests during the Roy Rogers Hoedown Weekend. Roy and his son, Dusty, performed for the guests and then did an informal meet and greet. A fun time was had by all!
