Headings
• Faire un enduit à la chaux• Typical heading with gerundive
– Rendering with lime– Making a lime rendering
or– How to make a lime rendering
• Faire de vos titres un paradigme– Quelle chaux choisir ?– Choosing your lime
• Etc.
It’s easy to make a lime mortar especially since there is no longer any need to handle quicklime,
and there hasn’t been for a long time now.and there hasn’t been for a long time now.
Start off : Nowadays, mixing lime render is easy… (F.Bischoff)
Ne pas viser une traduction trop idiomatique
• Il est facile de faire un enduit
– it’s as easy as wink to…
– It’s as easy as pie to..
– It’s as easy as falling off a log to…
• d'autant qu'il n'est plus nécessaire, depuis belle lurette,…– the days of using quicklime are but a distant memory…
• Thanks to its physical properties it is more and more often used instead of mixed/hybrid/cement-lime mortar rendering for outdoors and plaster (of Paris) for indoors.
Rappel grammatical
• English uses 0 determiner for categories– Uncount nouns
• Le mortier bâtard : hybrid mortar• Le plâtre : plaster
– Plurals• Sur les murs intérieurs : on inside walls
Quelle chaux choisir ?
1. Choosing your lime
There are two main kinds/types of natural lime: • air-slaked lime• hydraulic lime.
– There is a great deal of synynomy in designations of natural lime.
– As you explain the differences, use terms that are – widely known and as transparent as possible.
• Air slaked lime sets/hardens in air, whereas hydraulic lime starts to set in water, and it’s the one you will need for your rendering.
• Or in two sentences:– Use hydraulic lime for rendering.
• It is sold as NHL (or Natural Hydraulic Lime) in 35 or 50 kg bags.
[1] : XHN (NHL) NF P15 510 – Natural hydraulic lime
• The proportions given here are based on a 35kg bag.

hereafter (legalese)
rustique.
• The coarser the sand you use, the rougher/more chunky it will look.
– Proportions needed for high-quality rendering• Mixing the lime and the sand
• FOr clarity’s sake, modify into heading and subheading
Un enduit traditionnel comporte trois couches :
• A traditional French rendering has three layers
– Explicitation: renderings differ across Europe• This one is typical for France• This is obvious in the French version• It needs to be pointed out in English
• the scratch-coat which is projected/flung thinly onto the
surface • undercoat which gives the rendering volume and evens it
up/takes up the unevenness• finishing layer which gives its final appearance [as its
name suggests/implies]
terminology
• scratch-coat= rough-coat = bonding coat = the first undercoat
• floating coat = straightening coat = body coat
• setting coat = finishing coat = top coat
• Aline Zins points out ‘the scratch coat is applied thinly to the surface and scratched to improve the bond with the next coat’.
• Proportions– rough-coat: 8 buckets of sand for 20 litres of water– second layer: 11 buckets of sand for 20 litres of water
– final layer: 14 buckets for 20 litres of water
NB• sand buckets = buckets for sand
– Cf a wine glass : a glass of wine
3. Preparing the mortar
- Unlike grey cement, hydraulic lime can be used for up to two hours.
• Preparing mortar in a cement mixer– Mix really dry sand in the mixer.– Add the lime.– Use a mask so that you don’t breathe in any. – Add water. – Let it mix for two or three minutes. – Test the consistency.
It should be (like cow dung?) neither too runny nor too thick.
• Preparing mortar by hand– Take a container.– Mix sand and lime with a shovel.– Add water.
Principes et méthodes
• Textes procéduraux
• Traduction vers l’anglais
• Traduction en général
Textes procéduraux
• The principles for writing instructions– Commands– Clarity– Concision– Chronology– Captions– Consistency
commands
• The English imperative happens to be the simplest verb form! Take advantage of this.…en vous protégeant d’un masque…
Wear a mask …
• Whenever you can, start your sentences with the command verb.
Be diplomatic in your commands
• Don’t boss the user around
• Pour voter, vous devez vous rendre….– Go to … to vote.
• Avoid must, have to in instructions• Use imperatives• Look for alternatives
– You need to….– It is mandatory to…
clarity
• Getting the message across– Breaking the text up into bite-sized chunks
• Bullet points– Easier to grasp if all have the same structure
All imperatives
All noun phrases… etc
– Providing descriptive headings– Good layout is essential
concision
• Leaving out unnecessary verbage– Il faut savoir que…– Nous attirons votre attention sur…– At the end of a list : enfin,– In the text : en effet… etc.
concision but not at the expense of clarity
• Nouns may be shorter– Avoid inhalation
• but verbs are clearer– Avoid breathing any lime in
• Verbs are safer: you are in control
chronology
• Is your text set out in the right order?
e.g. Caution : avoid breathing in lime
- take out of the instructions ?
• If there are steps– number them !
captions
• Use captions to break up a long text
• Write descriptive captions– If the following section is not relevant
to particular users, they can skip it.
consistency
• Once you have decided on a term, use it and avoid synonyms.
If you usescratch-coat
don’t even think of referring to it later asthe first undercoat
Checking consistency is an important phase in the revision process.
General translation techniques
• Packing and unpacking (MAK Halliday)
• Using support verbs
Emballage et déballage terminologique
• Recatégorisation de substantifs abstraits déverbaux en français
• Rendus en anglais par le verbe correspondant.
Quels sont les emballages ?

– Développer : the volcano erupted
the species lived/dwelt on the island/on islands
Example 1
• It would appear that a volcano erupted 12,000 years ago, eradicatng all the representatives of this island-dwelling species.
Example 2
– Homo floresiensis was discovered in September 2003 in a cave on the island of Flores.

• Your International Office will tell you how to enrol at ENST Bretagne
– The workability of hydraulic lime is up to two hours -> Hydraulic lime can be used/worked for up to two hours.
• Avoid lime inhalation– Avoid inhaling lime, avoid breathing lime in.
Verbes supports
• English = light verbs, support verbs
• She can advise you on the subject =– She can give you some advice on the subject.
Variation in support verbs
• Between languages– Faire cours
• English give a lecture• German eine Vorlesung halten
• Between registers– La rame marquera l’arrêt…
• Geographical– Comment prend-on une douche (= comment se
douche-t-on) en GB, aux EU?• have a shower (GB) take a shower
General differences between English and French
• French tends to be more general– permettre (qui ?)
• English tends to be more concrete– can
• French tends to avoid repetition– Ce dernier…celui-ci…
• English tends to play on repetition– is used instead of mixed mortar on facades and instead of
plaster on interior walls. (LB)– There are two sorts of lime… aerial lime and hydraulic lime.
Hydraulic lime is the one you need… (EF)– Non-hydraulic lime and hydraulic lime (MM)

La dernière partie de la traduction
• Applying the mortar
• Check the plaster before you apply it. • The day before, wet the surface thoroughly. • In addition, it will need to be quite rough, clean and free of dust, if the
plaster is to stick.• Wait for 48 hours between the first and second coat and at least a week
between the second and the final coat. • The plaster will start to set in two hours, because of the water, but it goes
on setting almost indefinitely – secondary setting on contact with air.• Lime plaster must not come in contact with any metal surfaces. • When you have finished your work, be sure to clean your tools very
carefully – concrete mixer, shovel, trowel…• Lime dries in contact with air, so if you cover it with a moist cloth or a
sheet of plastic it will last longer. • Let your rendering rest for 24 hours so it will stick better to the wall.
