Mining worker’s driving ambition By NIGEL ADLAM Chellsey Morrison BANK worker Chellsey Mor- rison was looking for a sea change in life. So she counted someone else’s money for the last time and signed up to do a mining course. ‘‘I wanted to do something different,’’ she said. ‘‘I want- ed to work outdoors and thought it would be fun to work in the mines.’’ She now drives water carts, caterpillars and dump trucks at the Frances Creek iron ore mine and improves her skills by attending the new Larrakia Trade Train- ing Centre in Darwin. Chellsey has a soft spot for what she calls the ‘‘baby trucks’’ — they weigh in at a mere 80 tonnes. She lives at the mine camp, 30km from Pine Creek, with her boyfriend Kerryn. Chellsey works 14 days straight and then heads home to Katherine for seven days. ‘‘It’s always great to get home and sleep in your own bed,’’ she said. The driver said the switch to mining gave her ‘‘an awe- some lifestyle’’. ‘‘I definitely see myself staying in mining. Every day is different. It’s great work- ing with a close team — we are all good mates,’’ she said. Chellsey’s ambition is to learn how to drive loaders, graders and diggers. ‘‘That will take time. I have to earn my stripes first,’’ she said. Shell under pressure SYDNEY: Oil giant Shell will decide within weeks whether to turn its Sydney refinery, which supplies al- most half of the state’s fuel, into an import terminal. Shell says the 75,000 barrel per day Clyde Refinery and Gore Bay terminal can no longer com- pete with a number of mega-refineries being built in Asia, due to its small size. The Shell board will make a decision within coming weeks, following a period of consultat- ion with employees.
