Jeans for Genes Day
NCC was awash in denim last week with staff, students and even siblings participating in Jeans for Genes Day. Skirts, shorts, vests and the traditional Levi 501s were the order of the day with over $170 raised for medical research into childhood diseases.
According to the Children’s Medical Research Institute, one in twenty children are born with a congenital abnormality or genetic disease. Jeans for Genes Day is thus a worthwhile initiative that brings scientists ever closer to lasting cures or treatment.
Many thanks and well done to all who swapped their usual cool cotton attire for jeans!
Thanks to Mrs Kirsty Stone for all her incredible work and organisation...
From the Principal’s desk...
There is so much on and so much to be thankful for.
Firstly to the extraordinary efforts of the P&F volunteers at the fes<val – you have done an outstanding job and as a result we are well on the way to paying for the new sports surface. I know you are all working hard to ensure the success of the Father’s day market and Open Day and we are grateful for all that you do.
Secondly I want to echo the thoughts of most of Nhulunbuy in congratula<ng the ukulele ensemble for their stellar performance during the DSO concert. To Mrs Diprose, who actually performed with the orchestra as well as organising the students – thank you, you con<nue to inspire!
Thirdly we have just emerged from a science extravaganza with Peter van Dam and his group of helpers running a day of experiments for all the classes, culmina<ng in rocket launches. Peter we really appreciate the extra <me and energy that goes into this.
And there are a number of things coming up.
Next week is Book Week with loads of ac<vi<es for the students. There is a Reading under the Stars on the evening of Wednesday the 22nd with guest reader Lynne Walker and a character dress up day on Friday 24th
We have a new shade sail arriving for the primary play area and there is a working bee on Saturday the 25th so if you are looking for a way of working off your parent hours – we could certainly use a hand.
And on September 1 there is the Father’s Day market and Open Day where we want you to invite anyone who is remotely curious about the College to come and have a look – there wi l l be tours , s tudent d isp lays and demonstra<on classes as well as the fun of the market with the stalls and ac<vi<es.
So let’s enjoy the happy chaos with hearVelt thanks toward all those who go the extra distance to ul<mately make educa<on a wonderful journey for our children.

There was great anticipation for the Darwin Symphony Orchestra visit to Gove last weekend. It felt like the main streets of Sydney or Melbourne with hundreds of cars descending on the High School and throngs of people with picnic baskets lining up for premium seating on the oval.
Despite the arctic conditions (who knew it could get so cold?) – the musicians bravely ignored the wind and played up a storm – with some help from James Blundell, the Arafura Dance Association and our very own NCC Ukelele Ensemble.
Looking resplendent in the new school uniform, students entertained the crowd with the old family favourite “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” – ably conducted by music maestro Julianne Diprose (who leapt off the stage where she had been playing in the string section to do so).
Thank you to the many organisations and individuals who worked hard to bring such an event to Gove and we hope the DSO doesn’t wait another six years before gracing us with their music!
NCC Uke Group wows the crowd!
Haiku
Over the next few issues, we’ll be profiling some of the Haiku that Year 7 have been composing.
Haiku, the ancient Japanese poetry form, uses just a few words to capture a moment and create a picture in the reader's mind. It is like a tiny window into a scene much larger than itself.
Traditionally, haiku is written in three lines, with five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line, and five syllables in the third line.
Matsuo Basho Frog Haiku is an example of one of the most famous Haiku, and is over 300 years old.

An introduction to Year Oneʼs Mrs Jan Louttit - in her own words....
My husband and I arrived in Nhulunbuy two months ago and are enjoying living in such a friendly community. Teaching at Nhulunbuy Chris=an College is a joy that is growing as I come to know the wonderful children, staff and families more.
Over the years I have taught in country and coastal Queensland schools, from Biloela to Kings Chris=an College at the Gold Coast, Cooroy on the Sunshine Coast and in recent years in Alice Springs and Darwin. My special interest is Literacy in the Early Years and in Queensland I worked in Brisbane and at Cooroy with teachers and small groups to improve Literacy outcomes.
Our grown up children received their primary and secondary educa=on in Chris=an schools within the Lutheran system so I believe very strongly in the value of educa=on from a Chris=an perspec=ve. It is wonderful now to share with their friends as they celebrate weddings, bap=sms and birthdays.
We have three beau=ful granddaughters at the Gold Coast and in Gladstone, who we talk to regularly on Skype. Family holidays with the liOle girls and their parents have been very special =mes for us.
Sailing, gardening and camping are keen interests for my husband and I and we spent =me in 2006 cruising the Queensland coast. We are now making the most of exploring the beau=ful country around Nhulunbuy during the Dry.
